Our inaugural meeting so it will be pretty much an informal discussion over beer to discuss the future of a WestSide programming group. No specific language or methodology. We're hoping for the group to cover a wide range of topics including (but not limited to) software development (desktop, web, other), AI, microcontrollers, robotics, etc. Come add to the discussion.

The Portland CocoaHeads group is devoted to discussion of Apple's Cocoa Framework for programming on Mac OS X. During monthly meetings, members present on their projects and offer tutorials on various programming topics. Developers using any Cocoa-related language (Objective-C, Python, Ruby, etc.) are welcome, as well as related platforms like iPhone.

Meetings are on the second Wednesday of the month at 7pm, at CubeSpace, in the "Persian" room.

We have an open agenda this month: please bring projects to show, questions to ask, topics to discuss. A projector will be available.

Join fellow programmers interested in Smalltalk for discussions and demos. This is our first meeting of the fall season. Michael Lucas-Smith, Cincom engineer and new Portland resident, will be demonstrating WebVelocity. Other topics may include CouchDB, OpenGL, and building a new website for the group.

The building is in an "L" shape. The main entrance is at the inside corner. The door will be locked, but a phone number to call to be let in will be posted there. If you don't have a cell phone, get there more or less on time and we'll check the door to see if you're waiting.

We often go to a pub after the meeting for food, a beer, and more discussion.

Rich Internet applications (RIAs) are everywhere. With Web businesses like Google and Yahoo! and brick and mortar companies like Harley Davidson and Sherwin Williams embracing RIAs for their online presence, the media buzz is giving way to the reality of a better Internet.

Adobe has recently contributed AMF support to the Zend Framework, allowing PHP developers to easily build Rich Internet Applications using Flex and Adobe AIR that interact with a PHP backend.

Ryan Stewart, a technical evangelist with Adobe, will give an introduction to Adobe Flex and Adobe AIR, and will walk through how to create a Flex application powered by PHP and the Zend Framework. Working with Zend Studio for Eclipse, and Flex Builder (an Eclipse plugin), Ryan will demonstrate how to build, debug and deploy applications built with Adobe Flex, and how to have these same applications run on the desktop using the Adobe AIR runtime.

With this knowledge, developers will be able to easily build rich Internet applications that combine data from PHP and rich media like audio and video into a compelling application.

Python 2.6 has been released and 3.0 will be shortly. We'll be celebrating their releases this Tuesday with a D.I.Y. What's New party!

The format is simple: pick a change or two from the What's New in Python documentation from 2.6 or 3.0 and tell us about it! You can use the projector if you want, but < 5 minutes. That's easy because most changes are small.

Here's an example from 3.0:

"Removed <> (use != instead)."

So easy! Find some and bring 'em to us. If you get inspired and want to share one of the few larger changes (< 10 min), check the wiki and put your name down.

Ian Dees's Scripted GUI Testing with Ruby (Pragmatic Bookshelf) is a practical, quick-moving tutorial based on real-world GUI applications. The book uses examples from Windows, OS X, and cross-platform Java desktop programs as well as Web applications. You'll develop test scripts in Ruby. You don't need to be a Ruby expert to use this book, but basic comfort with the language will be helpful.

OpenTechSpace, TechShop, and Tempus Dictum will present an “Arduino Cult Induction” Workshop at TechShop on Saturday, May 9 2009, from 1 to 5 pm.

In this workshop, you will build a complete and functional Arduino-compatible micro-controller (Dorkboard), and will upload and run a program on it. The Arduino development environment is very popular with artists and other creative people, and can be built and programmed even if you have little hardware or software experience.

Some of tonight's presentations:

Igal Koshevoy will give an overview of a few different data stores. He will focus mostly on MongoDB and Tokyo Tyrant; but he will also touch on CouchDB. Igal will discuss the pros and cons of these databases, features, performance and how they stack up to relational databases.

Jesse Hallett will expand on CouchDB with an overview of some Ruby libraries that provide high-level interfaces to CouchDB and an open source ORM he's building on top of it. These are the early days of non-relational databases. So in my opinion this is a good time to think hard about what a high-level interface should look like.

There will be a definite Ruby slant to this meeting. But there should also be a lot of information covered that will be useful to people working with any language.

1. "Ruby Persistence with CouchDB", Jesse Hallett

There are several libraries out there that provide high level interfaces between Ruby and CouchDB. I will give an overview of some of them, discuss the pros and cons of each, and show how these libraries make working with CouchDB easier. Along the way I will talk about the particular types of problems that CouchDB is good at solving.

Jesse Hallett has been designing web applications with Ruby for nearly three years now. He has worked on administrative / record-keeping applications, CMS and Ecommerce platforms, and various other pieces of software. He spends as much time as possible with his fellow geeks in organizations like the Portland Ruby Brigade and the Portland JavaScript Admirers. Jesse has developed a strong interest in the evolving state-of-the-art of client-side JavaScript technology and next generation databases. Jesse is currently developing JavaScript technology at Jive Software.

1. "Testing iPhone apps with Ruby and Cucumber", Ian Dees

This talk begins with a survey of the landscape of iPhone UI testing. In particular, we’ll discuss the groundbreaking work done by Matt Gallagher in stimulating and spidering the iPhone UI with an XPath test script. That will be a natural jumping-off point to explain why a full-fledged “GUI driver” for iPhone apps has been long in coming. We’ll look at different ways to prod at application code, and discuss the tradeoffs. Finally, I’ll introduce a simple library of Ruby glue code to connect Cucumber test scripts to the iPhone. The technique will be very basic, but just powerful enough to test a simple iPhone app.

Chris Irvine is a Senior Technology Consultant and founder at Threeprong.com LLC, specializing in performance tuning, B2B integration, and custom workgroup solutions. He's local to the Portland area and a PSU alum. His professional experience includes management roles in multiple industries, and numerous development and database environments. Much of his recent projects have been in PHP/MySQL, Python, and also the FileMaker workgroup and mobile platforms.

Ian Dees saw his first Timex Sinclair 1000 over 20 years ago, and was instantly hooked. Since then, he’s debugged embedded assembly code using an oscilloscope, written desktop apps in C++, and joyfully employed scripting languages to make testing less painful. 1. "Ruby, Parser Generators, and External DSLs", Luke Kanies

Using Puppet's Parser as an example, we'll talk about using Parser Generators like YACC and ANTLR to create complete external DSLs - why you would, why you wouldn't, and what's different about them. We'll even delve into some of the more complicated bits like abstract syntax trees.

Luke Kanies has been publishing and speaking on his work in Unix administration since 1997. He has focused on tool development since 2001, developing and publishing multiple simple sysadmin tools and contributing to established products like Cfengine. He founded Reductive Labs in 2005 as a response to the stagnation in sysadmin tools, to be a vehicle for changing the way we interact with and manage our computers. He founded and is the project lead for Puppet, an open-source automation framework written in Ruby, and he is always researching and developing new ways to make it easier to talk to computers on your terms. He has presented on Puppet and other tools around the world, including at OSCON, LISA, Linux.Conf.au, and FOSS.in.

1. "MapProjection, a geographical projection library for Ruby", Duncan Beevers

Duncan is a wrangler of many technologies, primarily Ruby, Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, and ActionScript these days at Kongregate.

Chris Pitzer has claimed November's Michel's Monthly Module (most likely: subprocess), Brett Carter is putting together a presentation all about Mercurial Queues, then Jason Kirtland will highlight a few of the differences between MQ and Mercurial Patch Branches. Jason also plans to share a quick bonus lightning talk about Emacs, PyFlakes and PEP 8.

Who : Anybody who wants to hack on Darcs (or Camp, Focal, SO6, etc) Beginners especially welcome!

Why : Darcs aims to have bi-annual hacking sprints so that we can get together on a regular basis, hold design discussions, hack up a storm and have a lot fun.

What : We plan to put some finishing touches on Darcs-2.4. Darcs 2.4 is a pretty exciting release because we expect it to offer nice performance enhancements from Petr's Google

Summer of Code Project, and also a nice new 'hunk splitting' feature.

We also intend to set aside at least one Darcs hacker for mentoring beginners, so if you're new to Haskell or to Darcs hacking, here's a good chance to plunge in and start working on a real world project.

Despite missing December and January, February's PDX Django meeting looks like a great one. We have one short and one medium talk scheduled -- if you'd like to do a 5 minute or so talk on a tool, problem, or feature, why not let us know?

It's also the day before PyCon starts, so we might just chat about what looks interesting there.

• Dermot Maty on a problem he had with Proxy Models, and how he solved it

• Michael Richardson will be previewing a talk he's giving at DjangoSki. Here's the summary from their talks page:

"Michael is a cofounder at Urban Airship where he spends his day working on a RESTful API to deliver notifications and in-app content to mobile devices. His talk, "RESTful APIs with Django and Piston," pulls from Urban Airship's experience and goes through creating an API in Django with Piston along with pitfalls you may experience along the way.

Michael was also the developer behind the massive Django-powered meat conglomerate bacn.com until it was sold earlier this year. Bac'n did not, sadly, have an API."

Join a few Ruby programmers for dinner to explore alternatives to fixtures for use in tests.

We'd like to co-present our findings at the next pdxruby meeting.

We can use existing open source Ruby software to experiment with, by making a branch, trying out the library, and requesting a merge if we like the changes. Apps we can contribute to include http://calagator.org , http://openconferenceware.org and http://pdxruby.org.

March's PDX Django meeting will be a bit informal.

Adam Lowry will show a little bit of Celery, the distributed task processor, which is used to easily write and run offline tasks to be run outside the web request.

This month we'll have a talk by David Hollingsworth on the Curl language (not to be confused with cUrl the commandline utility).

Curl is a statically typed object-oriented language that JIT-runs in a browser plugin along with a large number of companion libraries and an IDE. Curl also has an internal tool for compiling to C, so Curl is >90% written in Curl. It is not related to the wget-like-library also called Curl. See http://www.curl.com for more.

Some of the topics I can cover: * Why we (still) need a programming language for the Internet (and why Flash/JavaFX/Silverlight ain't it). * Mixing text and code: not the heresy XML advocates would have you believe. * Venture Capitalists ate my syntax: switching from Lisp-y Curl to C-y Curl. * Java Generics almost make me pine for C++ templates OR if {Array-of int} isn't a real type, your type system sucks. * Yes, Virginia, non-normalized Unicode means operations are O(n) (aka Strings are not really arrays of chars, but they're closer in Curl). * DSLs in Curl: source-to-source macros ala Lisp. * Refactoring is for wimps: a strong versioning mechanism partially mitigates the need for backwards-compatibility, but not entirely. * Plus the standard "ooh shiny" stuff.

1. "Ruby Hangman: April Fools Special" -- Markus Roberts will confound and amaze you with his latest puzzle.

2. "Machine Learning and Data Mining Using Ruby" -- Randall Thomas will present a quick and dirty introduction to machine learning and data mining, describe effective ways to apply these, and show how to make use of these using Ruby. Randall works at Engine Yard, is a classically-trained musician, tinkers with robotics, and enjoys coding with Ruby, Erlang and OCaml.

3. "Ruby fixture replacement issues and factory_girl tutorial" -- Igal Koshevoy will provide an overview of the Ruby tools, methods and divergent needs discussed at our recent fixture replacements meetup. He will also provide a quick tutorial of the "factory_girl" fixtures replacement library.

4. "Mid-month unstructured activity meetup discussion" -- The meetup to discuss fixtures replacement was a big success. I'd like to have more similar events in between regular meetings.

A polyglot programming group meeting in the heart of The Beave. We seem to talk a lot about oddball programming languages and their features. And the usual geekery you'd expect from a programmer's group.

This month we'll be running Rakudo * to get some exposure to the new Perl 6 language features and check out the Rakudo * ("star") release (a Perl 6 implementation on Parrot.)

The * series is a more featured, predictable, and stable user-focussed release than the git master or monthly development releases of the Rakudo Perl 6 compiler. This is less cutting-edge than the current development version, and is intended to give early users a relatively slow-moving target to experiment with language features and use cases.

Speaking of slow-moving, Rakudo is really, really slow. This is not the production-grade performance you know from Perl 5, this is the westside's MO of oddball programming language geekery and bloody stumps. We're so cutting edge, we might even start the meeting before the release tarball drops. Just in case, here's the instructions for building git master rakudo:

Django is an open source web application framework, written in Python, which follows the model-view-controller architectural pattern.

DjangoCon US is the main US event for the Django community to come together. It will primarily consist of two tracks of talks over three days. Additionally there will be room for open sessions, lightning talks sessions, and a development sprint after the conference.

Small talk about all things Smalltalk, the object-oriented programming language and environment.

This month's program includes a presentation by Brian Rice about Slate's Haskell-based descendent Atomo, and what features he'll be drawing back into Slate, including Smalltalk-oriented pattern-matching. Also, Slate is gaining general assignment syntax in a non-abstraction-breaking way using Slate's macro facility.

Finally, and intriguingly, a student, Max OrHai, who has been working on Dave Ungar's parallel Squeak VM, has a nice demo.

The meeting is in room 086-01 of FAB, known to some directional signs as room 86-01. This room is under the plaza between the Engineering Building and the Fourth Avenue Building, you may enter through either lobby and go down the stairs.

"Faster than an FFT, the audio-oriented QRST (spectral transform)"

Based on the interest Phil and Ed expressed in my spectral transform, I've spent lots of time during the past two months further developing the software. Besides getting it to work better -- it still needs refinement -- I've ended up creating an audio-compression method I call QRST. I'll be playing sound files to demonstrate what the spectral transform, the audio-compression format, and decompression back into sound files can do, so this will be much more interesting than the words "spectral transform" suggest.

BTW, being faster than the FFT is just one of the side effects of having designed it for use with sound files. Fourier transforms are sooo ssllooww.

The OSCON JVM Language Symposium is a free, open-spaces conference for implementers and users of different languages on the Java Virtual Machine. We will have several of the biggest names in JVM languages in attendance, and an open format where you can propose and lead sessions, or simply hang out and hack on a new or interesting language idea. This means we will have no planned agenda for the conference and it will be decided by the attendees.

Some of the languages you can expect to learn about include: Scala, Clojure, Groovy, JRuby, Fantom, Gosu, and (insert your favorite JVM language here).

This is a free event happening the Sunday before OSCON Java (registration for the OSCON Java conference is not required).

Participants rapidly prototype game designs and hopefully inject new ideas to help grow the game industry. We share a common theme and constraints. 10gen: Intro to MongoDB and Schema Design

One of the challenges that comes with moving to MongoDB is figuring how to best model your data. While most developers have internalized the rules of thumb for designing schemas for RDBMSs, these rules don't always apply to MongoDB. The simple fact that documents can represent rich, schema-free data structures means that we have a lot of viable alternatives to the standard, normalized, relational model. Not only that, MongoDB has several unique features, such as atomic updates and indexed array keys, that greatly influence the kinds of schemas that make sense. Understandably, this begets good questions:

• Are foreign keys permissible, or is it better to represent one-to- many relations withing a single document?
• Are join tables necessary, or is there another technique for building out many-to-many relationships?
• What level of denormalization is appropriate?
• How do my data modeling decisions affect the efficiency of updates and queries?

In this session, we'll answer these questions and more, provide a number of data modeling rules of thumb, and discuss the tradeoffs of various data modeling strategies.

The Zissou Society for Programming Language Exploration (aka pdxlang) is a general programming language discussion/exploration group. The weird, the offbeat, the little-known, the forgotten programming languages. These are the things we'll be discussing.

As the use of video games becomes more pervasive--think Angry Birds to Farmville to Wii Fitness--it becomes useful to consider their wider impact on our lives. Are they merely useful for entertainment, or can games help create change through creativity, imagination and play? Can games be valuable for mission-based groups like non-profits, NGOs and community organizations? How can game development connect students to real-world problems?

We’ll kick off the evening with a panel discussion including speakers at the intersection of gaming and game development for education, non-profit enablement and youth outreach. Our panelists will explore how gaming and the creation of games can positively impact our local communities and wider world mission-based efforts. Narrowing promotes non-determinism and it enables computing with incomplete or unknown information. Many advanced branches of mathematics involve structures that abstract over well known specific instances, e.g. abstract algebraic structures, equivalence relations, various orders, category theoretic structures, etc. In typed functional programming (e.g. with type classes in Haskell), encoding such structures amounts to enforcing the definition of elements and operations for a particular structure instance on one hand, and being able to use said elements and operations in generic definitions on the other hand. With Dependently Typed Programming (DTP) we can go one step further and define propositions/properties for abstract structures, and subsequently require proofs in particular instances.

This talk will tell the story of how examples of particular instances inspire an abstract definition (including its propositional properties), how to then instantiate the original concrete examples in the new abstract definition, and finally create further abstract definitions that depend on previously defined ones. Emphasis will be given on how easily concrete proofs can be used as evidence for abstract propositions, and how proofs about abstract structures parameterized by other abstract structures may reuse their proofs (similar to the more common concept of reusing operations in subsequent abstract definitions). The talk will use Agda as its demonstration language, but proofs will mostly be in the form of equational reasoning that should look familiar to the non-expert.

Hosted by the 4th Annual Emergent Learning Commons conference.

Hackathons and game jams often suffer from top-down approaches led by technology rather than the needs of users and clients. We flip this by inviting NPOs and NGOs to share their missions, goals and challenges; and, one of our case studies comes from Donate Life Northwest, an organ donation non-profit seeking to update their video game Scalpel Pal.

Our panel explores ways to approach the challenges of these NPOs and NGOs through game-based design perspectives. Following the conference, we will be hosting a startup game jam, Guts for Glory, to develop games for Donate Life Northwest.

Pixel Arts presents the Guts for Glory Game Jam in association with Gaming For Social Good's first game summit!

In a 20-hour challenge, you will work with fellow game developers to create a game prototype for the purpose of furthering the goals of a Portland nonprofit organization!

We will be working with Donate Life Northwest for this game summit. Participating developers will be creating a game prototype dedicated to aiding the mission of this organ donor registry nonprofit, the goals of which are outlined in the immediate link! http://www.donatelifenw.org/content/what-we-do

That being said, production managers, marketers, and advertising agents are welcome to sign up as participants!

We have room for 45 participants and will not be counting RSVP's in other locations, though walk-ins are welcome if space permits.

Managing Time While Staying Productive and Inspired: How Creative Game Developers Get Work Done

Anyone who does game development (art, design, programming, music), whether they be a full-time indie/employee or a part-time dev or student/hobbyist knows there's several fine balances we have to maintain. We split time between finding inspiration and buckling down and getting things done. We split time between the work that we care about and well, Real Life. When does looking for inspiration become detrimental distraction? When does working for hours on end become hazardous and counterproductive?

Let's all talk about how we deal with this in our daily work: how we stay focused, how we stay excited, how we budget our time and attention. I think it would be pretty educational to share and compare notes on how we all as developers of all types actually split our time up and what kind of schedules we maintain.

• Ed Phillips will give a short talk on design principles within Rails: "For reasons of pragmatism and economy, I'll focus on test design. My current conscious thought on these principles has been reinvigorated by Sandi Metz, so I'll lean heavily on her work, as well as on Avdi's from Objects on Rails."

• Lennon Day-Reynolds, now working at Twitter, will present "Ruby programming in the large". He'll talk about issues related to having hundreds of engineers working in a very small number of Ruby/Rails repositories, and what has and hasn't worked. He'll touch on process and culture, as well as architectural and technical solutions.

Join us for the first meeting of the Portland Node users group. We'll have food, code, and a lovely presentation about Terraformer from Esri by Jerry Sievert.

What is Terraformer? A library for converting geographic data between different mapping formats and GeoJSON.". But it's more than that, it's a Geo-Toolkit that works in node as well as in the browser via AMD or CommonJS, providing tools for reading and writing from multiple geo formats, converting to and from web mercator, an RTree index, and some simple polygon tools.

The monthly meeting of Portland's first JavaScript and ECMAscript users' group. We host presentations and discussions on everything JavaScript-related - including JavaScript frameworks, node.js, CoffeeScript, and whatever else comes up.

We have three presentations lined up for this meeting:

• Aaron Longwell will show us what he has accomplished with AngularJS
• Jay Contonio will demo DelRay, a new information management product from Seabourne built on to of NodeJS. DelRay, makes it easy to pull information from different sources, deal with data quality issues, and then send the data to different applications (mobile, web, business intelligence, analytics, etc)
• Mark Piller will talk about developing JavaScript applications with no server-side coding using a Backend-as-a-Service platform using Backendless as an example.

Mark's well be a remote presentation. It's an experiment to see how well the format works.
