Interested in exploring how Microsoft Flow works in a collaborative environment? At this meeting we'll work together in a small group to try and build a Flow and test functionality.

If you don't have an O365 dev/test environment there will be some log-ins available. This is an informal meeting with no presentation, come by when you're off work.

In this meet up we will talk about the different Buzz words in NFV and SDN space. What is SDN and the role it plays in networking. How do Containers fit into the whole space, and why is everyone so interested in containers? Lastly we will talk about how knowing about hardware and how to utilize the hardware functionality helps accelerate the functionality of VNFs in the OpenStack environment.

First talk begins at 5:30PM.

Talk 1: What is SDN really?

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is the hot topic in networking. There are many projects and products all claiming to be SDN, so what is it really? Why does SDN matter? and what is happening in the resurgent networking space?

About the speaker: Stephen Hemminger is a Linux developer who specializes in networking. He has worked for Linux Foundation, Brocade (Vyatta) and now Microsoft. As maintainer of the Linux bridging and the iproute2 utilities, he contributes regularly to the Linux kernel and DPDK projects. Having been involved with TCP/IP since the early days of UNIX, he is quite familiar with the congestion and SMP issues. Steve works on so integrating so many different networking pieces that he decided to give himself the title of Network Plumber.

Talk 2: Container networking

First virtual machines and now containers? What are containers, anyway? We’ll discuss what a container is, how it’s different from a virtual machine and then explore configuration options for networking in a container world. We’ll also go over some basic ways of putting containers together into applications and how to make Linux namespaces work for you.

About the speaker: Kevin Bohan is a software architect in the Network Platforms Group at Intel. He spends most of his time working on performance optimization of network virtualization technologies being utilized in the telecommunications industry. Prior to Intel, he worked in academia in the areas of advanced networking, supercomputing and embedded systems.

Talk 3: Server Networking for the Curious

Confused about the differences in server-based networking technologies? Maybe you’ve heard or read about DPDK, or FD.io VPP, or other technologies, but the bigger picture is hard to see. We’ll walk through a short survey of some of the most important and useful packet-processing tools, both in hardware and in open source, and why you might be interested in them.

About the speaker: Jim Chamings is a Sr. Software Engineer at Intel, working in the Datacenter Scale Engineering team. His focus is on enabling Cloud and SDN/NFV developers to get the maximum value out of their datacenters

Microsoft has a tool in preview called "Flow" - you should check it out: https://flow.microsoft.com/en-us/ in theory this tool will eventually roll out to Office 365 users and be an end-user option for creating simple workflow and systems integration beyond the SharePoint workflow platform. For example, maybe you want a Tweet to be logged in CRM then have a task show up in Slack - Flow might be a solution here.

This is intended as a general-purpose hack session where folks with a little more experience writing/using Rust or who have an open source project or two that could use new contributors are encouraged to invite newcomers to hack-a-long for a few hours. There will be no specific topic or presentation, just a bunch of nerds nerding out on a (presumably) rainy Saturday afternoon.

Just to be clear, this is intended for all levels of programming/rust experience:

• Folks with more experience will benefit by possibly gaining new contributors for their projects.
• Folks with little/no experience will benefit from direct guidance working on a specific feature/bug in an existing project.

Recommendations for those with projects in mind:

Since we are asking that some of you come prepared with a project or two in mind that could benefit from additional contributors, the following will help:

• Post a comment on this [meetup.com] event with a link to the open source repository that you would like to invite people to work on.
• Create a list of issues that your project(s) could use help on. If you use Github as a project management tool, a github issue for each bug/feature/improvement you have in mind would be immensely helpful as a way to establish continuity between you and your new contributors after this meetup.
• Keep in mind the varying levels of skill/experience other folks might have and be prepared to offer some relatively low-hanging fruit in addition to more difficult tasks.

Also, don't let your lack of experience with programming/rust or lack of ownership over a particular project prevent you from proposing a project to work on...I personally have very little Rust experience and no projects of my own but know of a couple projects that could benefit from new contributors!

Learn more about how Unix shells compose simple programs to solve complex tasks and how these processes interact with each other under the hood. We will discuss how Unix processes behave compared with standard Erlang and Elixir processes and how the Erlang VM could be used to emulate common patterns found in the Unix shell.

A very basic REPL will be provided to play around with some of these ideas. After the discussion, we will break out into groups to try to re-implement some common Unix commands in your favorite ErlangVM-based language and then use shell composition to solve a set of everyday problems.

Note: Several people have brought up that having conversations on meetup is difficult and I'm inclined to agree. It would also be nice to have a place to discuss things about organizing without confusing people who just want to learn. So I've set up a google group for organizing discussions. We'll continue to post organizers meetups here so everyone has a chance to get involved.

We recently started a user group for Portland ReactJS users. I'd like to have an informal meet and greet to get to know the community here and get some input from you all on what you'd like to get from this user group and some of our ideas. We hope to have our first official meeting in January/February 2015.

Soon I'll be looking to give an introductory talk on famo.us js and give the basics of how it works, its pros and cons. This event is targeted at anyone that has used already used the framework. Hello Drone Enthusiasts!

We welcome software and hardware Engineers working on Android, iOS, and all mobile platforms.

Working on projects by yourself can be difficult because don't get the feedback or interaction you get in an office environment. Online sites such as stackoverflow.com are great resources for answering well defined questions, but don't have the benefits of personal interactions. When you are part of a community you get to know others with similar interests, get an immediate response to hard to describe problems, bounce ideas off of others, and learn by example. The PDX Mobile Workgroup is designed to fill the void for engineers who would otherwise work on their projects in relative isolation from other engineers.

The group is informal. Once a week we sit around, talk, have a bite to eat, and work on our personal projects. There is no set schedule. Attendees stop by at various times after work and stay as long as they like.

I am excited about meeting other people and learning what otherpeople are tracking or are interested in tracking and why.

I will bring a few gadgets and devices that people can play with:a fitbit, the zeo, the bodymedia armband, the emwave2 heartrate variability gadget.

I can talk about the various apps and services that I use or like: fitbit, zeo, 750words.com, healthmonth.com, quantter.com,gottafeeling app on the iphone, runkeeper, etc...
