It’s widely known that Project Management requires a certain personality to juggle people and process with a smile. But do Project Managers excel because of certifications, or because of experience? Adam Edgerton

Adam is a Senior Producer at Instrument. He has spent much of the last decade in technical project management on both client and agency sides. From leading large-scale enterprise projects to overseeing client project portfolios to growing and managing a team of project managers, he has cut his teeth on the entire digital project management experience.

Mitch Huff Certified Scrum Master

Mitch Huff is an Agile Program Manager at Viewpoint Construction Software, where he's been leading development of a Software as a Service product for enterprise businesses. Prior to Viewpoint, Mitch led software teams for Nike's FuelBand and Running experiences. His teams were the first at Nike to deliver their software to production continuously, serving traffic from millions of customers with multiple software deployments per day.

Mitch started his career in 2000 with his own business building websites out of his Virginia Tech dorm room during the .com bubble. He continued coding even after focusing his career on project management ten years ago. One of his current coding projects is a simulator that predicts a software project's range of delivery dates for teams using Kanban and continuous delivery. Julie Morse Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt

Julie Morse is a certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. She earned her certifications at MasterBrand Cabinets Inc. in 2003 and has practiced Lean Six Sigma project work since then in both manufacturing and healthcare companies. Julie is currently working as the Process Improvement Project Manager for Clinicient, Inc. Julie’s personal mission statement is “To help others see a new way of doing things that improves their efficiency and work/life balance.”

In today’s world, talent, ideas, and business relationships—the lifeblood of a thriving technology company—are as mobile and transferrable as ever. The departure of a few key employees to a competitor can wreak havoc on an enterprise, particularly when the departing employees take concepts, critical skills, or major customers with them. In that situation, if you’re an executive or human resources professional, you might be more than a bit perturbed at the departing employees, who essentially have “poached” assets that may have taken you and your colleagues years to develop. Identifying fraud and suspicious activity on the Internet is all about data. iovation protects its customers by analyzing devices performing high value transactions and recommending an action in real-time based on past activity. He is currently the Application Architect for iovation where he helps fight fraud, account take over, and identity theft on the Internet by tracking device reputation and suspicious activity in real-time. Prior to taking on the bad guys of the Internet, Darin helped build a massively multi-player blackjack game for the UltimateBet platform and developed MetroOnes nationwide VoIP network, the backbone of their 411 offering.

Good business decisions require relevant and valid information. Deciding what information is relevant can be challenging – especially as organizations transition to Agile development and project management methods. This presentation will explore ways to use the Goal-Question-Metric (GQM) technique to inform good decisions by identifying some relevant reporting measures when applying the Agile scrum methodology.

Agile teams value working software over comprehensive documentation. Teams deliver working software in short, iterative releases of business value rather than larger releases of longer duration. This increases the need to make quick decisions and the need for relevant and timely information. GQM provides a goal-driven way to identify the information our stakeholders really need.

This presentation will walk through using GQM, look at examples of applying it, review some relevant Agile measures and discuss relevant measures for different stakeholders. Audience participation is expected.

EVENT SUMMARY

The sudden rise of smart phones interests organizations in extending their existing applications to work with mobile devices. The question immediately rises whether to develop native apps for the mobile platforms or to create a mobile-friendly web site.

Both approaches have pros and cons, but some code frameworks make it easy to produce websites that look and feel close to a native app by making use of HTML5 and CSS3.

Recently WebMD wanted to make a user’s Personal Health Record available in a mobile friendly manner. This talk will go over the key points which drove us to use the jQTouch framework over native apps, and it will go into technical detail showing how this framework allowed for a very fast and clean implementation.

Maximum Coverage with a Minimum of Data: How Equivalence Classes can be used to narrow down the amount of data needed for analysis

In Quality Assurance, an Equivalence Class is the set of all inputs that can be seen as interchangeable with one another without impacting the results of the test, where only one of them needs to be tested in order to have confidence in the test results. Automation can certainly help facilitate running all scenarios, but it isn't always possible or practical to create a completely automated test suite. This lunch time presentation is ideal for the QA Engineer who is trying create a data set and complimentary set of test cases that accurately validates the code without having to run through a seemingly endless matrix of possibilities.

When making an analysis of the behavior of a system that is based on a large set of data, you have basically three options presented: Full data-set analysis, Analysis of a randomly sampled subset of the data, or Selection of a subset of data based on Equivalence Class Elimination.

In this presentation we will talk about the pro's and con's of each approach, and then focus on how to proceed with the Equivalence Class methodology in greater detail. Please join us for this informative and interactive discussion followed by a Q&A session.

The next Portland MeeGo Meetup will be next Monday, January 17 at 6:30pm at Kells. I know this isn't a lot of advance notice, but to make it up to you, we have reserved the room at Kells for the third Monday of every month starting in March. We're skipping February to celebrate Presidents Day.

For the meeting this month, we invite anyone who wants to learn more about MeeGo to come hang out and talk about the project. If you have something specific that you want to learn or see, please reply to this post, and we'll see if we can get it on the agenda.

Amber Case and her partner Aaron Parecki are the founders of Geoloqi. Geoloqi is a private, real-time mobile and web platform for secure location data, with features such as Geonotes, proximal notification, and sharing real-time GPS maps with friends.
