To Certify or Not to Certify | Project Management Event

It’s widely known that Project Management requires a certain personality to juggle people and process with a smile. But do Project Managers excel because of certifications, or because of experience? Come join us on November 17th to hear from a diverse panel of Project Management professionals that have gone back to the textbooks for certifications and others who have bypassed formal education for on-the-job experience. All are equally successful with a variety of pros and cons, you won’t want to miss the certification debate from our panelists.

    Questions to be answered:

How easy or difficult is it to earn certifications? What is the professional value of earning certifications? What type of certification is most widely accepted or required? Tech Talent on the Move - Protecting Your Enterprise When Onboarding and Exiting Key Employees

In today’s world, talent, ideas, and business relationships—the lifeblood of a thriving technology company—are as mobile and transferrable as ever. The departure of a few key employees to a competitor can wreak havoc on an enterprise, particularly when the departing employees take concepts, critical skills, or major customers with them. In that situation, if you’re an executive or human resources professional, you might be more than a bit perturbed at the departing employees, who essentially have “poached” assets that may have taken you and your colleagues years to develop. How do you react? Could it have been prevented?

There’s also a flip side: what if you’re trying to hire the employees? You may well have no designs on your competitors’ IP, but a competitor that’s just lost three of its superstars may not see it that way. What’s the best way to minimize the risk of incurring a competitor’s wrath (and potentially a lawsuit) when recruiting and onboarding key employees? What about strategies and best practices for negotiating new noncompetition agreements with the employees?

On June 17th, a panel of executives, CTOs, and HR professionals will discuss their experiences in onboarding and exiting key employees, with an emphasis on how and when they use noncompetition agreements to protect their businesses. Learn which strategies are likely to work—and which likely won’t.

Panel: Ayla Goren, Sr. Human Resources Manager, Elemental Technologies Suk Kim, Vice President & General Counsel, Urban Airship Ananthan Thandri, Vice President & Chief Information Officer, Mentor Graphics

Four FUDs of the Cloud - Discussed, Dissected and Debunked

Cloud computing has quickly evolved from marketing terminology and buzzwords to a valuable and often vital way to conduct business and deliver services. With the rapid rate of cloud adoption and the constant change in the industry, it can be confusing to sift through all the information and get to the facts. Join us as we discuss “The Top Four FUDs of the Cloud” in a fun pub environment.

The Four FUD Topics and Presenters Are:

Differences in Service Delivery (SaaS and on Premise Solutions) -- Gabe Authier, Product Manager for Cloud Computing, Viewpoint Construction Software will discuss integrated vs. customized, the importance of renewals (B4B vs. B2B) and the focus on strategy and business outcomes.

Security and Compliance -- Adam Shnider, Managing Director, NW Coalfire Systems will discuss SSAE16, HIPPA, PCI, etc. and what customers expect from cloud vendors from a compliance support standpoint, customer requirements, and the minimum requirements everyone should have, and how not all cloud providers and services are created equal.

Financial Impacts -- Chris Wheaton, VP of Services at Jive Software will discuss services revenue models and how they differ from being subscription based vs. traditional license and maintenance. He will also discuss how to generate incremental services revenue when there is no longer a defined maintenance revenue stream.

Success Stories – Adam Lynch, Co-Founder, Hubbub Health will share success stories despite all the F.U.D!

The speakers will then host a now classic Reddit-style AMA (Ask Me Anything) session after their presentations, giving attendees a chance to ask questions and add to what’s sure to be a lively discussion.

The Right Tool for the Job: iovation Shares How Cassandra Helped Them Scale

Identifying fraud and suspicious activity on the Internet is all about data. iovation protects its customers by analyzing devices performing high value transactions and recommending an action in real-time based on past activity. Apache Cassandra can consume and analyze a ridiculous amount of data while keeping costs low.

At iovation an implementation using Cassandra currently supports 10,000 read/write operations per second on a cluster storing over 1 billion rows in 500GB, Cassandra makes this solution horizontally scalable, highly available, recoverable, and cheap (under $20k).

In this presentation Darin will cover some of the other options his team explored, hardware choices that were made, and the more interesting tunables Cassandra offers that allow you to squeeze IOPS out of your cluster.

Presenter: Darin Glatt, Principal Application Architec, iovation Darin Glatt is software developer with over 10 years experience working with large-scale distributed systems. He is currently the Application Architect for iovation where he helps fight fraud, account take over, and identity theft on the Internet by tracking device reputation and suspicious activity in real-time. Prior to taking on the bad guys of the Internet, Darin helped build a massively multi-player blackjack game for the UltimateBet platform and developed MetroOnes nationwide VoIP network, the backbone of their 411 offering.

    Agile Metrics that Matter

Good business decisions require relevant and valid information. Deciding what information is relevant can be challenging – especially as organizations transition to Agile development and project management methods. This presentation will explore ways to use the Goal-Question-Metric (GQM) technique to inform good decisions by identifying some relevant reporting measures when applying the Agile scrum methodology.

Agile teams value working software over comprehensive documentation. Teams deliver working software in short, iterative releases of business value rather than larger releases of longer duration. This increases the need to make quick decisions and the need for relevant and timely information. GQM provides a goal-driven way to identify the information our stakeholders really need.

This presentation will walk through using GQM, look at examples of applying it, review some relevant Agile measures and discuss relevant measures for different stakeholders. Audience participation is expected.

Going Mobile? Web Frameworks vs Native Apps: A Case Study from WebMD

    ORGANIZATION AND REGISTRATION

Presented by the Developer Forum of the Software Association of Oregon. Online registration is open through the website until 5pm on May 18.

    EVENT SUMMARY

The sudden rise of smart phones interests organizations in extending their existing applications to work with mobile devices. The question immediately rises whether to develop native apps for the mobile platforms or to create a mobile-friendly web site.

Both approaches have pros and cons, but some code frameworks make it easy to produce websites that look and feel close to a native app by making use of HTML5 and CSS3.

Recently WebMD wanted to make a user’s Personal Health Record available in a mobile friendly manner. This talk will go over the key points which drove us to use the jQTouch framework over native apps, and it will go into technical detail showing how this framework allowed for a very fast and clean implementation.

The event includes networking, program, and lunch.

    PRESENTER

Jake Hall, Lead Developer, WebMD Jake Hall has worked in the software industry for 10 years. He has spent the last 6 years at WebMD Health Services Group and is currently Lead Developer and is has been providing leadership on the development team in moving to mobile applications.

Database Testing: Maximum Coverage with a Minimum of Data

Maximum Coverage with a Minimum of Data: How Equivalence Classes can be used to narrow down the amount of data needed for analysis

In Quality Assurance, an Equivalence Class is the set of all inputs that can be seen as interchangeable with one another without impacting the results of the test, where only one of them needs to be tested in order to have confidence in the test results. Automation can certainly help facilitate running all scenarios, but it isn't always possible or practical to create a completely automated test suite. This lunch time presentation is ideal for the QA Engineer who is trying create a data set and complimentary set of test cases that accurately validates the code without having to run through a seemingly endless matrix of possibilities.

When making an analysis of the behavior of a system that is based on a large set of data, you have basically three options presented: Full data-set analysis, Analysis of a randomly sampled subset of the data, or Selection of a subset of data based on Equivalence Class Elimination.

In this presentation we will talk about the pro's and con's of each approach, and then focus on how to proceed with the Equivalence Class methodology in greater detail. Please join us for this informative and interactive discussion followed by a Q&A session.

Location-based Apps with Amber Case and Aaron Parecki

Amber Case and her partner Aaron Parecki are the founders of Geoloqi. Geoloqi is a private, real-time mobile and web platform for secure location data, with features such as Geonotes, proximal notification, and sharing real-time GPS maps with friends. Geoloqi has been covered in the Willamette Week and Oregon Business. It has been presented at eComm, Open Source Bridge, Show and Tell PDX and Research Club under the alias Non-Visual Augmented Reality with SMS and GPS.

What will you learn: Why developers of apps should look at what users want to do now, as well as what users want to do in their future. Why social apps should try to mirror real–world relationships Why sharing should be about who you share with as well as how long you want the information to be available. Why developers should think about making apps "ambient” and require less user interaction.

Tour-based Testing: The Hacker's Landmark Tour

Presented by the Quality Assurance Forum

Growing application complexity, coupled with the exploding increase in application surface area, has resulted in new quality challenges for testers. Some test teams are adopting a tour-based testing methodology because it’s incredibly good at breaking down testing into manageable chunks. However, hackers are paying close attention to systems and developing new targeted attacks to stay one step ahead.

Rafal Los takes you inside the hacker’s world, identifying the landmarks hackers target within applications and showing you how to identify the defects they seek out.

Learn what "landmarks” are, how to identify them from functional specifications, and how to tailor negative testing strategies to different landmark categories. Test teams, already choked for time and resources and now saddled with security testing, will learn how to pinpoint the defect - from the mountains of vulnerabilities often uncovered in security testing - that could compromise the entire application.

Meet the Speaker: Rafal Los, Hewlett-Packard Rafal Los, Web Application Security SME with Hewlett-Packard's Application Security Center (ASC), is a 10+ industry veteran who has worked in a variety of security positions - from consultant to Information Security Officer in the Fortune 100 - within some of the most demanding business environments.

Rafal’s unique blend of technical expertise and business knowledge enable him to teach audiences about security techniques, programs and processes that they can both understand strategically, and realistically apply. He has extensive experience in security testing, risk analysis and management, penetration testing and architecture and policy. Rafal is an accomplished writer maintaining 2 popular blogs with numerous appearances in the mainstream media and niche sites such as Slashdot. Previous successes include building and implementing a successful web application security program for one of the largest and most diverse companies in the world.
