Equilibrium: The Human Mash Up – Olympic Mills Commerce Center Equilibrium: The Human Mash Up RSVP: http://tinyurl.com/art-tech08 Read reviews of the first of three Mash Up events: http://tinyurl.com/yelpreview08 Featuring Live DJs Echoik & Frequency Working Artists Network + Software Association of Oregon introduce Equilibrium: The Human Mash Up. In the spirit of disruptive ideas and breaking down barriers we ask, "How can art and technology and the synergy of the two address humanity's next evolutionary step?" Four categories of work will address these questions and collectively speak to the power of human ingenuity. We invite artistic and technological creators to submit their work that addresses human survival in an era of interspecies evolution, revolution, and devolution. Art and technology are two words that for many represent vastly different worlds, and for generations have largely existed along parallel, yet non-convergent lines. But now the potential for unprecedented collaboration is here. Ever-evolving technologies allow us to share ideas across borders, both geographic and symbolic. Such potential for shared ideas has helped break down long standing silos that for generations inhibited expansive thought and human progression. The lines are now blurred. Creators of all sorts now have public space to mutually ponder where we've been, where we are, and where we're going. By sharing once segregated perspectives, we can see the world through a different lens and evolve as a species like never before. E= m4 humanity - Submissions will fall into one of four conceptual areas: Momentum: captures the inertia and velocity of human innovation Maintenance: captures the drive for ecological and human preservation Multiplicity: captures the boundless potential of human convergence Mobility: captures the facilitation of human movement and idea exchange http://tinyurl.com/yelpreview08 |

End Bloglessness 3 – Webtrends That's right, time to End Bloglessness, AGAIN! Whoo-Hoo! Gather up your friends, family, or any one else you can think of who has been looking to start a blog and come join us! Sunday, October 4th from 12:00-5:00pm Format Each session will be 1 hour: 15 minute presentation and 45 minutes of assisted help. During assisted help, attendees can raise their hands to get help from one of our assistants. Assistants are folks from the Portland tech scene that have done this process before who can help you with your questions. Agenda
What to expect We are focusing on WordPress blogs for this workshop. We chose WordPress so that if your blog is going well enough and you need to graduate to a hosted blog, you're data and experience will be compatible. By the time you leave the workshop, you'll have a blog that is ready to go and some direction on how to connect with other local bloggers. We are expecting people from all skill levels, including the technically challenged. Everyone will be treated with respect and will be encouraged. We'll be hosting the event at Webtrends. There are some computers available to use, but we highly recommend bringing your laptop if you have one as there likely won't be enough computers for everyone. Help us get the word out! Most of the people we're hoping to reach are either to far outside of our social circles or are offline completely. We could use your help in letting people know about this free workshop to get a blog up and running. We don't care if your motivation to blog is personal, professional, or political; we'll help you get one up and running.
Why is this free? We're hoping to make new friends and be good citizens. We don't want to be an insular group, so we want to enable others to join. And, because we're Portlanders inspired by other Portlanders to DIY and that Yes We Can. :) Help out If you have experience with installing WordPress, we'd love to have you help answer people's questions. Please leave us a comment below if you're interested in helping! |

The Kauffman FastTrac® LaunchPad initiative is being offered in response to the many workers who have lost their jobs and businesses that are struggling due to the current economic environment. It is a proven fact that entrepreneurship plays a key role in getting America back on the road to recovery. Over 300,000 entrepreneurs have participated in FastTrac® programs. BYTE ME 2012 - A Showcase of Technological Art – Launch Pad Gallery 2012 is a year filled with anticipation... Will our planet come to a sudden end? Will the world economy crumble? Will Obama get re-elected? Who knows? Does anyone care? BYTE ME, 2012 can take your mind off of all these difficult questions and perhaps even answer some of them for you. The event showcases installations and artwork by Portland artists Libbey White, Donald Delmar Davis, Jonas Nash, and Cameron Adamez that highlight the use of technology in different ways. The centerpiece is the world premiere of the installation T,E.D. (Transformations, Emotional Deconstruction), created by Sean Hathaway, with music by Carlos Severe Marcelin. This large work features 80 customized Teddy Ruxpin dolls wired together, delivering real-time emotional content from the internet based on the Emotion Wheel developed by the psychologist Robert Plutchik. The work uses speech engines and lighting to deliver a seamless and continuous conversation between the animated dolls who have had their motherboards replaced by the custom board designed for this piece by the creator. Interactive real-time input can also be done by the audience through text messaging or an on-site TED software application. |

BYTE ME 2013 - Annual Exposition of Technological Art – AFRU Gallery We here at AFRU are gearing up for Byte Me! 2013. It was a great show last year and we hope to make it bigger and better for this year. If you are not familiar with Byte Me! it is our annual exposition of technical art. So, what is ‘Technical Art’ exactly? For the context of Byte Me we are defining it as artwork whose inspiration, medium, design or execution would be prohibitively difficult if not impossible to realize without the aid of or direct incorporation of technology. The goal of this show is to not only exhibit a narrow but emergent sub section of artwork but also to foster a larger and tighter community of geeky-artists and artistic-nerds. |

Please Note: Brunch has slimmed down. Talks start at 12:30, and everything finishes by 2pm. We are doing something a bit different this month. A member of the RC Board has been working with the Lewis and Clark College Venture competition and suggested we have some of the student businesses do a "dress rehearsal" of the final pitch they will present to a panel of judges where they could receive up to $30,000 in funding for their venture. In keeping with the spirit of the competition, we're going to give you very little info about these businesses. The students will be looking for feedback on their presentation and how well they pitch their venture. Exciting! Bring some or all of these things for the optimum Brunch Experience

FutureTalk Summer Series with Andrew Wilson + Special Happy Hour – New Relic Autonomous Driving and Open SourceAs one of the largest consumer purchases and most common forms of transportation in the developed world, cars and their rapidly advancing in-vehicle automation systems pose a not-too-distant future scenario where regulation, technology, economics and individual rights will intersect in new and unforeseen ways. Come join an interactive discussion on the topic. We’re also thrilled that Matt Jones of Jaguar Land Rover* has agreed to participate in what we hope will be a highly interactive discussion. Matt is the head of Future Infotainment at JLR and an outspoken leader in driving industry standards to accelerate things like autonomous driving. Doors will open at 5:30p. The special beer (from Burnside Brewing!) + whiskey networking happy hour sponsored by the Intel Open Source Technology Center will kick off at 6p, and includes free beer, and a whiskey tasting. The food and drinks are provided by Bellagios and New Relic. The presentation will begin right at 6:30p. Please RSVP via Eventbrite HERE Back when open source was far from mainstream, Andy navigated the early waters of GPL to make it tenable to his employer, an intellectual-property-rich semiconductor company. Today, Andy is the chief open source compliance officer for Intel. When he’s not reviewing the license manifests of soon-to-be-released code as part of his day job, Andy likes to ponder bigger ideas, one of which is Autonomous Driving and the role open source is playing in that future. › FutureTalk is brought to you by New Relic in collaboration with TAO |

Public Lecture at Reed: "Emergence of Ordered Patterns in Physical, Chemical, and Biological Systems" – Reed College (Vollum Lecture Hall) The Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Reed College invites you to a public lecture by Prof. Harry L. Swinney, Sid Richardson Foundation Regents Chair of Physics and Director of the Center for Nonlinear Dynamics at the University of Texas at Austin. Prof. Swinney is one of the pioneering figures in the study of chaos theory and his lab has played a leading role in the study of nonlinear dynamics over the past 40 years. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and his work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Moser Prize, the Richardson Medal, and the Boltzmann Medal. From spatial patterns like the stripes on a zebra to temporal patterns like the rhythmic beating of the heart, patterns are ubiquitous in nature. Understanding how these patterns emerge is one of science’s most enduring mysteries. In this lecture, aimed at a general audience, Prof. Swinney will discuss how ordered patterns emerge as systems are driven away from thermodynamic equilibrium. While no general theory of pattern formation currently exists, new analysis techniques, experiments, and computational methods can provide general insights into pattern formation in a diversity of physical, chemical, and biological systems. Spontaneous pattern formation in bacterial colonies Sponsored by the Office of the Dean of the Faculty at Reed College. |

With further development, thermionic vacuum and gas diodes advanced to be capable of power rectification with ever greater efficiencies. Many example devices from the 1930's to 1950's will be available to examine. There will be orange, purple, and blue glows in the demonstrations! A Portland community effort to help those affected by the Intel layoffs – Falcon Building By now, you've heard the news about the layoffs occurring at Intel, Oregon's largest employer. And now Jive, as well. Nearly 800 people from our community are now in the midst of searching for new jobs. But you know what? In Portland, we have never been a community that shies away from making the best out of every situation. Or from supporting one another. And that's not going to change anytime soon. Especially now. That's why a bunch of us are banding together to figure out ways to help those folks affected. Why? Because we're a community. And this is what communities do. |

CODE- Debugging the Gender Gap - Screening – Tillamook Station JOIN US FOR A MOVIE NIGHT! Doors will open at 7 pm, the show starts promptly at 8 pm. Older kids are encouraged to come. Tech jobs are growing three times faster than our colleges are producing computer science graduates. By 2020, there will be one million unfilled software engineering jobs in the USA. Through compelling interviews, artistic animation and clever flashpoints in popular culture, CODE documentary examines the reasons why more girls and people of color are not seeking opportunities in computer science and explores how cultural mindsets, stereotypes, educational hurdles and sexism all play roles in this national crisis. Expert voices from the worlds of tech, psychology, science, and education are intercut with inspiring stories of women who are engaged in the fight to challenge complacency in the tech industry and have their voices heard. CODE aims to inspire change in mindsets, in the educational system, in startup culture and in the way women see themselves in the field of coding. PDXRust: RustDoc For Everyone, and Bridging Ruby And Rust – Mozilla There will be 2 talks this month! Rustdoc for Everyone: You don't have to be a great writer to create great documentation. There are simple techniques and rules you can follow to build documentation for your users. Rust ships with documentation tools, but not all crates take advantage of them. Documentation is the first way that developers interact with your code - great documentation sets your crates apart, helps users skip easy questions, and cuts down on bug reports. In this talk, we will explore techniques for writing great documentation. Speaker Jeremiah Peschka has been breaking software since 2000 - he's been told this sounds impressive, but he thinks it might just make him feel old. He blogs over at http://facility9.com and can be found on twitter and IRC as peschkaj. When Jeremiah isn't working with databases and Rust, he can be found playing video games, hanging out at food trucks, or napping at home. Bridging Ruby and Rust: Ruby is not the fastest language in the world, there is no doubt about it. This doesn't turn out to matter all that much – Ruby and its ecosystem has so much to offer, making it a worthwhile tradeoff a lot of the times. However, you might occasionally encounter workloads that are simply not suitable for Ruby. This is especially true for frameworks like Rails, where the overhead wants to be as little as possible. In this talk, we will explore building a native Ruby extension with Rust to speed up parts of Rails. What does Rust have to offer here over plain-old C? What kind of challenges would you run into when briding a dynamic langauge like Ruby with Rust? Let's find out! Speaker Godfrey Chan is a member of the Rails core team and a co-author of Helix, a toolkit for implementing Ruby classes in Rust. He works at Tilde Inc, splitting his time between building Skylight and open-source consulting. Other Information: PDXRust meets on the first Wednesday of every month, from 6-8pm, at Mozilla's Portland space. The first hour is either lightning talks from group members or a more in-depth tutorial from a Rust expert, and the second hour is hacking and social time. Join us in #pdxrust on irc.freenode.net (http://webchat.freenode.net/) with any feedback about what you'd like to see! PDXRust: Nick Cameron on Design Patterns in Rust & Jamey Sharp on Corrode – Mozilla Portland Office We'll have 2 talks again this month! Design Patterns in Rust: Nick Cameron is a core contributor on the Rust language's language design, tools, and compiler teams. He's in town for RustConf, and will be sharing his talk on Design Patterns in Rust with us! Here's the abstract: This talk will cover some of the common idioms and design patterns encountered when programming in Rust. We’ll work through simple idioms used in everyday programming for tasks such as object creation and customisation, resource management, and destruction. We’ll then cover more complex patterns often used in generic data structures and libraries. We’ll also discuss some of the underlying themes and why these idioms and patterns occur in Rust. The talk will not assume previous experience with Rust. The audience will gain an understanding of programming with Rust and its strengths and weaknesses. For those learning (or intending to learn) Rust, the talk should provide a short-cut to intermediate and advanced programming skills. Corrode: Automatically Translating C to Rust C has been the de facto systems programming language for 44 years, which means an awful lot of useful software is written in that language. As excellent as Rust is, it doesn't have that inertia behind it. (Yet!) Rust has good FFI support for calling C functions, plus tools for automatically generating FFI bindings, which make much of that existing software usable for new Rust projects. Still, gaining Rust's full safety advantages requires rewriting existing C software in Rust, which is currently a manual, time-consuming, and error-prone process. Corrode is a tool that aims to bridge this gap by automatically translating C source code to equivalent Rust. A Corrode-translated program is no safer than the original C was, but it gets the most tedious translation work out of the way so a programmer can focus on taking advantage of Rust's more advanced features. In this talk we'll explore what Corrode does, and does not, do. We'll discuss interesting examples that will surprise most C programmers, while staying accessible to programmers in any language. We'll look at how Corrode has been tested: the most effective ways are methods not widely used with other software. And we'll evaluate Corrode's documentation and community-building efforts, to both show how you can contribute and suggest steps you might consider for your own projects. Speaker Jamey Sharp is Corrode's initial author and a programmer experienced in a variety of languages including C, Java, Python, Haskell, and x86 assembly. He is new to Rust, compared to those languages, and Corrode grew out of his learning experiments. (The exercise has been very effective at finding odd corners of both C and Rust...) He recently completed a session as a Recurse Center resident, teaching advanced topics to diverse audiences of programming enthusiasts spanning every skill level, which he enjoyed tremendously. Other information: PDXRust meets on the first Wednesday of every month, from 6-8pm, at Mozilla's Portland space. The first hour is either lightning talks from group members or a more in-depth tutorial from a Rust expert, and the second hour is hacking and social time. Through this presentation, I’d like to explain how technical marketers can get the business intelligence they need, fix organizational inefficiencies, acquire the right tools for the job and drive digital marketing efforts forward in a way that can drastically affect a company’s bottom line. During this presentation, we’ll go over the following:
A large part of the presentation will include information on actual tools and metrics that I am currently using so feel free to ask any questions you may have related to the data or examples presented. Speaker Bio: Garrett Gillas got his start in technology at the age of 12 when he built his first website for his father’s electric vehicle startup. Since then, he has made a career out of helping business use digital marketing to grow their business. Garrett is currently a Marketing Manager at Tripwire where he oversees all web properties, paid media and related demand-gen analytics. Before Tripwire, he spent the last 10 years working with digital advertising agencies including Razorfish and CMD. His past clients include Netflix, Microsoft Xbox, HP, Hawaiian Airlines, IBM, Google, Urban Airship and Intel. Garrett is a Portland, Oregon native. |

Hack the Dot: PDX Startup Week – Vacasa A Hack the Dot is a two-hour hackathon where coding school students, junior developers, experienced developers, marketers, designers and curious web people come together to build ideas around a domain name. Our events are meant to be a quick and fun way to build a humorous (and functional) product quickly while meeting people in your tech/startup community. There will be pizza. And beer. What to Bring / How to Prepare: • Bring your laptop (fully charged). Bring your charger just in case. • Install the Atom text editor. Go here: https://atom.io/ • Setup a github.com account How does it work? Step 1: Attendees are broken up into random teams and assigned spirit animals to guide their efforts. Step 2: The teams are provided with the same undisclosed domain name by Name.com, arbitrary and often hilarious. Step 3: Teams have just two hours to come up with a functioning site inspired by that domain. The team builds the most creative and fun idea for the domain wins. Participants will be judged on four criteria: (1) functionality, (2) design, (3) humor, and (4) creative domain name interpretation. What do you get at the event? FOOD! SWAG! FRIENDS! How much does it cost? It’s FREE! Questions? Send them to HacktheDot at name.com. |
