7608 N Interstate Ave.
Portland, Oregon 97217, US (map)

Our Story

A few years ago, a geek bought a building at 7600 N. Interstate Ave. in Portland with the intent of turning it into a hackerspace. However, this didn’t work out, and the building sat unused for a few years.

Well, fast forward to June 2014 when the building owner contacted an existing local hackerspace for help and here we are. We are currently in the process of renovating the building to support a hackerspace, and setting up infrastructure.

We look forward to doing some really cool things in Portland, so come by and see us if you want to be a part of it. ctrlh.org -- meetup.com/CTRL-H

Exploring OWASP Juice Shop (with Burp Suite)

    CTRL-H

In this class, we’ll be exploring how to find the vulnerabilities in OWASP Juice Shop with Burp Suite (and maybe some other security tools if we get some time). You’ll learn to set up the environment to play with in your own time. As well as learning to practically apply the different features of Burp Suite and when it is and isn’t the most optimal tool. This will help you to reproduce security vulnerabilities or help find them for bug bounty programs.

Bio: Jordan is an Application Security Engineer at New Relic and a graduate from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in computer science. She’s Champion ranked in Rocket League and does yoga in her free time.

    PDXNode – Hack Night! 💻
    javascript

    CTRL-H

Welcome to the PDXNode Hack Night!

What is a PDXNode Hack Night?

PDXNode Hack Nights are your opportunity to enjoy a low-pressure JavaScript-centric environment where you shouldn't feel like you're supposed to do anything. First and foremost–just come and enjoy yourself. The night is yours: hang, hack, learn, or do whatever you’re interested in doing. 🙌

Depending on the size and interests of our attending group, we have various paths the night could go, and may or may not attempt some of the following:

    Map Ctrl-H into Hackerspace Regions

The hackerspace will be mapped into 'regions', and you can feel free to gravitate towards whichever one suits your interest!

    • A place for beginners who want to get going with node for the first time. • A place for people who want to work on their own projects (eg. projects you want to do outside of work, but need to find the time). • A place for people to just hang out and connect. • A place for people to work on projects in groups!

    'Unconference'-style Team Hacks

For team-hackers, we'll have a board up and sticky-notes available available at the beginning of the night. Anyone can feel free to write the name and/or description of something they'd like to hack on with other people–and others who're interested can feel free to go to that region and join in!

End of Night Show and Tell

There will be a list available to write your name, or team's name down on to give a quick show and tell of your projects at the end of the night. We're pumped to see what you've been working on!

    Some general stuff to remember:

    Help is available!

There will be seasoned Nodesters ready and available to help anyone with questions or advice in any of the hack-zones: beginners, solo, and group projects. Feel free to reach out and ask at any time throughout the evening.

Do what you want to do

Above all, we hope for this to be an easy-going event for people to do what they want to do with the time we have. Make the time awesome, it's yours. 😎

    Code of Conduct

PDXNode continues to abide by its Code of Conduct, and we ask everyone to commit to keeping to it in order for all of us to have a safe, fun, and amazing time.

    Wahoo! See you then! 🎉🎉 💻 🎉🎉

    Lock Picking Workshops

    CTRL-H

The local chapter of TOOOL (The Open Organization Of Lockpickers) hosts monthly gatherings for lock picking on third-Thursdays, 7-9p at Ctrl-H. Quarterly beginner introduction meetings like this one include a presentation to help people get started.

We supply beginners lessons, advice, picks, locks and calming words to the totally new. No experience needed. We also have challenge locks and security pinned progressives for the more experienced. You don't have to bring anything (but if you do, be sure to paint, etch or otherwise mark your stuff so it doesn't get mixed up). You don't even have to be sure that learning how to pick locks is a good idea. We will talk about that too! This meeting will include an introduction presentation covering the basics of why people pick locks, what the rules are and how to pick a standard pin-tumbler lock. There will be lots of hands-on time to practice what you learn. Even if you have never done this before, you will be amazed how quickly you can advance through the progressively pinned practice locks.

DORKBOTPDX February 2016 Workshop: HANDS ON JTAG FOR FUN AND ROOT SHELLS

    CTRL-H

JTAG may be almost 30 years old with little change, but that doesn't mean most people really understand what it does and how. This workshop will start with a brief introduction to what JTAG really is, then quickly dive into some hands-on practice with finding, wiring, and finally exploiting a system via JTAG.

For this workshop, we'll target a Raspberry Pi with an ARM microprocessor. In order to interact with the system, we'll use a JTAG interface cable from FTDI. We won't do any hardware modifications, but we will hook up wires in weird and wonderful ways to make the Raspberry Pi do things it otherwise shouldn't.

An Introduction to Pure Data (free DorkbotPDX workshop)

    CTRL-H

DorkbotPDX is happy to offer a free workshop as an introduction to Pure Data (Pd).

    When: Sunday, November 15th, 2015. 1-5pm Where: Ctrl-H Hackerspace, 7608 N. Interstate, PDX, OR

    Bring: A laptop and headphones

Instructors: Jesse Mejia, Alex Norman, Jason Plumb

    Details:

In this 4-hour course, students will learn the basics of Pd and will have fun developing foundational Pd patching skills.

Pure Data (Pd) is a free, open-source, community supported data flow language and coding environment with an emphasis on sound, music, and multimedia. It was originally written by Miller Puckette (also the original author of Max/Max MSP) and runs on Linux, Mac OSX, Android, and Windows.

Pd has been used widely in the creation of art -- such as music, sound art, visual art, generative, new-media, and interactive art. Pd interfaces readily with MIDI equipment and many popular microcontrollers.

We have curriculum posted here: http://dorkbotpdx.org/wiki/intro_to_pd_workshop_2015

Beginners are welcome. No prior computer programming or sound programming experience is required!

Notes: Students should attempt to install Pd prior to the workshop...but if not, no biggie. We can help with that!

Seating is limited to 20 participants. Please RSVP to [email protected] to reserve a spot.

Attendees will respect The DorkbotPDX code of conduct and will be asked to donate.

IPFS Portland OSCON Meetup: The Permanent, Distributed Web

    CTRL-H

Join us at CtrlH for food, drinks, discussion and a talk by Juan Benet on IPFS during OSCON week!

    What is IPFS?

IPFS is a distributed file system that seeks to connect all computing devices with the same system of files. In some ways, this is similar to the original aims of the Web, but brings in the latest ideas from P2P and cryptography to form a distributed, permanent web.

IPFS could become a new major subsystem of the internet. If built right, it could complement or replace HTTP. It could complement or replace even more. It sounds crazy. It is crazy! We also think it's the future of the web. Come see it in action, and meet the team of developers working on it.

Afterwards hang out, talk tech, hack, recharge your batteries, use our fast WiFi and get a tour of CtrlH, Portland’s newest and largest hackerspace.

    CTRL-H Open House

    CTRL-H

Thursdays are open house night here at CTRL-H. This is when members gather and can open the door for you. We know we can be there by 7:00PM, but most of the time we are hours early. We don't have an opening ceremony or any formal meeting. This is a time for you to eavesdrop on other peoples projects and get support on a project that you may need help with. Bring your inventions, your technical toys and your broken microwave to CTRL-H and Hack with friends.

    CTRL-H

All meetings are open to the public. Please feel free to drop by to say hello, ask questions, or show off something interesting! We currently have casual, bi-weekly meetings every other Monday. We also have less-frequent "formal" meetings featuring presentations, performances and other interesting activities like OpenDork (where anyone can have a few minutes to discuss their latest project, ideas or whatever). Watch this space for announcements.
