EPISODE #8!

Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!

TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.

So bring your laptops and your work ethic to the 3rd weekly PDX TechCoffee. One commit a week is all we ask.

NOTE: We've had some wifi problems in the past, so i recommend having what you need to work locally on your laptop before you come by.

TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.

So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.

Come hang out and write code is a quieter less crowded environment with your fellow nerds.

This week we'll have some folks playing with numpy and other big dataset/scientific computation stuff using Python. Ask around when you get here to find the group doing this.

The meetings are extremely informal, and everyone is welcome!

The place is smaller so finding the nerd herd shouldn't be too difficult.

Season 6, episode 1

Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!

TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.

So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on FreeNode. One commit a week is all we ask.

AgilePDX event: "The Mikado Method, or how to behead the legacy beast" workshop
World Trade Center

THANK YOU to our sponsors: ProKarma and Agile Open Northwest!!

For any code base there comes a time when you want (or need) to change it. If your changes are extensive, it’s easy to get lost in a jungle of dependencies or on a sea of broken code. Ultimately, you might just give up and shove it away under the legacy label. Instead of doing that, use "The Mikado Method," a systematic approach to reclaim your code. The method helps you visualize, prepare, and perform business-value focused changes, while delivering, and without having a broken code-base in the process. It enhances team communication, collaboration and learning, and helps individuals stay on track.

http://mikadomethod.wordpress.com/book/

For: Lead developers, architects, programming coaches, or anyone who wants to get some serious hands-on practice on how to work their way out of messy code while keeping the delivery frequency and business value focus.

Join Ola Ellnestam, founder of Agical.se and author of The Mikado Method, as he leads the group through exploring techniques for restructuring difficult-t0-work-with code. Ola likes to combine people, technology and business which is best done with simple means and flexible processes. More than that he likes to share his knowledge and experiences because that’s how new insights are created according to him. http://ellnestam.wordpress.com/

http://www.hanoulle.be/2012/02/who-is-ola-ellnestam/

http://www.agical.com/

Registration fee: $85 - The participation of our sponsors, (including Agile Open Northwest, ProKarma, and...you?) helps us to keep the fee as low as possible.

Southeast Grind

Inter-season edition.

Collaborative Game Development for NGOs and NPOs
University of Oregon Portland

How can we create community based game development for social good?

Hosted by the 4th Annual Emergent Learning Commons conference.

Presenters: Valerie Egan of Donate Life Northwest Brandon Bozzi of Game It Forward Local game developers Corvus Elrod, David Galiel and Wolfgang Wozniak

Hackathons and game jams often suffer from top-down approaches led by technology rather than the needs of users and clients. We flip this by inviting NPOs and NGOs to share their missions, goals and challenges; and, one of our case studies comes from Donate Life Northwest, an organ donation non-profit seeking to update their video game Scalpel Pal.

Our panel explores ways to approach the challenges of these NPOs and NGOs through game-based design perspectives. Following the conference, we will be hosting a startup game jam, Guts for Glory, to develop games for Donate Life Northwest.

Guts for Glory Startup Game Jam
through ISITE Design

Make games and help save lives through organ donation!

Pixel Arts presents the Guts for Glory Game Jam in association with Gaming For Social Good's first game summit!

In a 20-hour challenge, you will work with fellow game developers to create a game prototype for the purpose of furthering the goals of a Portland nonprofit organization!

We will be working with Donate Life Northwest for this game summit. Participating developers will be creating a game prototype dedicated to aiding the mission of this organ donor registry nonprofit, the goals of which are outlined in the immediate link! http://www.donatelifenw.org/content/what-we-do

General schedule: Friday, October 19th: 6pm-10pm (Team Formation and Brainstorming) Saturday, October 20th: 9am-5pm (Production) Sunday, October 21st: 9am-5pm (Production) Sunday, October 21st: 5pm-7pm (Postmortem)

Facilitated by Corvus Elrod, this Game Jam will be focused on creating a deliverable for Donate Life in the long run; the event will be set in a production environment, allowing developers to consider aspects of game development such as budgeting, client input, marketing, and their own quality of life on a day-to-day basis. That being said, production managers, marketers, and advertising agents are welcome to sign up as participants!

We have room for 45 participants and will not be counting RSVP's in other locations, though walk-ins are welcome if space permits.

Light breakfast and full lunch will be provided; provide restrictive dietary information on your registration.

Please also consider bringing $10 for a suggested donation to Pixel Arts!

This is not about marketing, and it's not about sales. APIs & IPAs is focused on community. We want to support your local tech community, and we want to get to know developers everywhere.

In each city, we're partnering with local companies that strive to build developer communities, as well as non-local developer-centric companies.

All you have to do is show up ready to talk shop – and we'll foot the bill for drinks.

COPIOUSLabs TechTalk: The architectural underpinnings of C# with .Net
COPIOUS

COPIOUS is a user-centered digital experience agency. We build digital products with the user at heart and technology in our bones. We recently moved to a new office and now have a large space to host our TechTalks.

About TechTalks:

COPIOUSLabs TechTalks series meets every other Friday at 1pm at the COPIOUS offices. Our talks span artificial intelligence, new programming languages and techniques, computational linguistics, geographic data processing, systems and software architecture, augmented reality, network security, and more as proposed to the Copious engineering team.

About this talk:

Speaker: John Jessee

As new programming languages emerge, Microsoft's flagship programming language has been evolving to keep up. See how C# and the .NET Framework have incorporated new features such as functional programming, non-blocking code, language integrated queries, and more. This talk compares C# and the .NET Framework to the languages found in the book, Seven Languages in Seven Weeks, and in particular COPIOUS' most "native" tongue, Ruby.

All are welcome to attend. If you have a talk that you'd like to suggest presenting, please email it to [email protected] along with a brief outline of what you'd like to cover.

Rentrak Hackathon
Rentrak - Downtown

The Rentrak Hackathon is a gathering of laptops and laughter. Classically, we all sit in a square and type words onto a keyboard that then get turned into a "computerized program". It's a good chance to work on your personal projects, learn what your peers are up to (computer-wise), figure out what the best programming language is, and/or say the words "I don't have anything to work on" or "I forgot my laptop". This event is very informal, and there is no specific project we'll be focusing our efforts on.

Food and refreshments are served. RSVPing to [email protected] is appreciated, but not required.

Come check out Rentrak's new downtown office. Everyone is welcome to join us!

PDX Code Retreat - Summer 2014 (Cancelled)

The Summer Code Retreat has been cancelled.

Code Retreat is designed to hone software craftsmanship skills and software design through repeated attempts to build an implementation of a well-known software problem (Conway's Game of Life). Developers use pair programming and discussion to exchange knowledge, and additional constraints are given throughout the day to emphasize good design concepts and practices. More details about the Code Retreat format can be found at http://www.coderetreat.org.

Hack day with uncontext.
Instrument

Let's get together again and made some art!

After the success of the TUIO Jams, we're going to try the same format for a different project.

uncontext., for the uninitiated, is a community art project that creates streams of constantly changing data that is publicly accessible. When you create something that uses the data as it streams live, it will move and update to the same heartbeat that is moving and updating every other creation using the data. So at the end of the day, we'll have a series of experiments and projects that are all pulsing to the same beat.

I'll even be releasing a new data stream at this event! When you attend, you can create in any way that makes sense to you:

  • Javascript/CSS/in the browser experiences
  • Processing and/or p5.js
  • PixelPusher (we'll have some you can play with!)
  • Unity
  • Bring your Arduino or Pi or Tessel
  • Anything that can connect to the internet!

The space is, as always, provided by the ineffable Instrument. We'll have coffee and lunch will be provided by the wonderful team at Codepen, as well as some swag both from sponsors and also generated and printed at the event!

If you want a quick intro to uncontext., here's a video of a 15 minute introduction presentation crammed into 5 minutes from a couple months ago.

Send John Brown a message if you have any questions!

Node PDX 2016
through The Bossanova Ballroom

Portland is an awesome place to be a JavaScript hacker.

JavaScript is everywhere. It’s in your browser, on your server, in your phone, on the wire between your devices, and possibly in your thermostat, beer keg, or karaoke system... and it’s only growing from there. We’ve gone from roll-over effects to robots, codeable toys and automated quad-copter drones, all speaking a common language of JSON, often sharing JavaScript code at their core.

Portland is home to some of the most talented developers in the world. We’re not kidding. Our quirky and distinctive town breeds creativity in all things, from the culinary arts and funky brews we’re so famous for to artisanally crafted Python and minimalist-chic of JavaScript micro-libraries. PDX is bursting with artistic craftsmanship unlike anywhere else on the planet.

NodePDX creates a time and a place for this community to share information, discuss ideas, and work together to improve the art and science of hacking.

Coding Summer Camps
through Catlin Gable School

CodeVana is partnering with Catlin Gabel Summer Camps to bring four exciting summer camps. Through these camps children will discover the joy of coding. These camps are created by industry professionals and students and will be week long in the beautiful 60-acre campus in Southwest Portland of the Catlin Gabel School. Sessions run July 5 - July 22, 2016, and are open to all children in the Portland metro area. Please REGISTER at https://www.catlin.edu/page.cfm?p=1005&LockSSL=true and bring the joy of coding not only to your child but also youth who don't have access. Sign up for the camp and help youth who do not have the resources to enjoy a free coding camp through CodeVana’s Community Building initiative. The four camps offered are as follows:

CodeVana: Digital Game Explorers [July 5-8th] In this summer camp, students are introduced to the joy of coding and programming through games, simulations and they will also learn to become digital creators by creating minecraft mods or digital newspapers/videos. They will present their work in an end of the week show and tell. Students ages 7-10 have an option of full day camp or a half day camp.

CodeVana: Breakaway with Code & Things [July 5-8th] [July 18-22nd] In this summer camp, 10-14 year old students will learn to code, make, play while using Internet of Things and integrate their understanding of math and science through computing/games as well as learning how their minds and brains work. This camp is experiential in nature and will focus on collaboration, and creation. Middle Schoolers have an option of full day camp or a half day camp.

CodeVana: Girls Make Apps [July 11-15th] Girls and women in the U.S. are avid users of computer technology, but they are significantly underrepresented in its creation. CodeVana is bringing a fun girls only camp organized by girls/women to help girls discover the joy of building, computer science, and coding. Girls will build Games, play with Internet Of Things, design and deploy Web & Mobile Apps in a collaborative and creative environment as well as explore science, math, and social aspects of women in technology. We invite middle school (7th-8 graders) and high school girls to join us. Girls will make Web Apps, Mobile Apps, and Game Apps in a collaborative and creative environment.

CodeVana: Startup Engineering [July 11-15] High School students are invited to make their ideas into reality through building and making with computing. They will learn all the engineering and customer development skills to build a technology startup. On July 15th, students will pitch their ideas and prototypes to the community and win prizes to continue to pursue their ideas through a community vote.

Hack Oregon Civic Lab - Data Synth Song: Experiencing Data as Audio
Falcon Building

This session, by Nick Lambert, will explore the possibilities of turning visual data into a musical soundscape. How can this become something where a set of data points can be its own song? How would this be done and shown on a website? Some of this we will talk logistics and how it would function on the Hack Oregon website, and some of this we will actually try to create together. Join us, as we think of sounds, synth pads, instruments, beats, AND data that could make up an experience like never before.

Nick Lambert is the Design Lead for the Hack Oregon Homelessness Team and Community Director at Oregon Story Board.

Hack Oregon's Civic Lab is made up of Oregon's brightest coders, creatives, government leaders, and community members working together to discover the invisible stories of our civic life.

We're hosting three months of curated workshops, build sessions, and guest speakers all leading toward one goal: a radically new open data portal for the City of Portland. Built by the people, for the people.
