#FullStackPDX : Critique

Who are we? We are entrepreneurs, full stack engineers, hackers, continuous learners, but above all, we are a group that loves to work hard and play harder. We organize a variety of content types, and the organizing team believes in delivering the best value for time invested in our events. Companies have launched, founders paired, code taken apart, lessons learned, and more. We are not the typical meetup where a teacher like presenter stands in front of the class and delivers their message. We are a full hands on interactive experience and meetings are successful from the cumulative knowledge and expertise of all members.

Join us for something different.

Join us to learn.

Let’s have fun building our dreams.

Register for our events and buy your ticket on meetup.com

Palm Pre Development Workshops

Hello all!

Just so you know, the first Pre Development Workshop will be on Saturday the 5th in the month of September! Please mark it on your calendar. The time has been set from 10:00-12:00.

Thanks, Jordan Gensler

Palm Pre Development Workshop

Join us on Saturday the 5th for the Portland Pre Development Workshop. Everyone is welcome to attend, no prior programming experience is needed.

  What is a Pre?
The Pre refers to the Palm Pre, a new competitor in the Smartphone market.

  Why develop for the Pre?
The pre offers a simple but comprehensive SDK that is easy to build on but is also powerful. The Pre has a flourishing open source community.

Why is the Pre so good?
There are many reasons why the Pre is a good development platform. The big reason is potential. While the SDK only allows web coding with additional API's, the core of the system is Linux, which already has a large community.

What do I need for a Pre Development Workshop?
Please bring a laptop with the SDK already installed.

The SDK can be downloaded from http://developer.palm.com

I also recommend installing the eclipse platform with the Mojo plug-in. Instructions can be found here: http://developer.palm.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1639

  Why only six tickets?
The space we are using at Souk has space for six people. If tickets sell out, then we will add more tickets.

Contact Jordan Gensler (@kesne) for more information.

How to Lie Like a Geek speaker: Michael Schwern

Geeks have a special relationship with The Truth. Nothing is more important than correcting a falsehood, no matter how small, and nothing is more odious than not telling The Truth. Unfortunately, in speaking The Whole Truth and Nothing But The Truth, the meaning is often mangled and the end result is the opposite, a lie.

We’ll examine some ways geeks lie while telling The Truth, to themselves and to others, and hopefully achieve better communications, easier to understand interfaces and maybe some personal enlightenment.

Some examples include: Lies by omission, lies by precision, lies by irrelevancy, lies by design, lies with statistics and that most dangerous of words “should” as in “the user should have realized”.

There will be cake. http://tinyurl.com/mermtx

As always, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the LuckyLab

Portland Perl Mongers - Rakudo Perl 6 "Feet Wettening"
Free Geek

The Rakudo * release of Perl 6 on Parrot is almost here. Whether you want to get your own feet wet, or help wetten someone else's feet, join us to write some Perl 6 code and share some learning.

We'll begin with introductions, cover some basics, and then work in small groups or pairs for about an hour, followed by a recap, then (of course) beer.

If you can bring a laptop, download and install rakudo ahead of time:

$ git clone git://github.com/rakudo/rakudo.git $ cd rakudo $ perl Configure.pl --gen-parrot $ make $ make install $ PATH=$PWD/parrot_install/bin/:$PATH $ perl6 -e 'say "Hello World"'

For more info, see http://rakudo.org.

Open Gov West '11
through Jupiter Hotel & Bossanova Ballroom

CONFERENCE Open Gov West 2011 is a two-day nonprofit conference being held at the Jupiter Hotel in Portland May 13-14, 2011. OGW '11 is designed to bring the Northwest region together to explore opportunities to open government, increase civic engagement, and coordinate projects across governments. Now is the time to move from old models and technology to finding innovative, cost efficient, and transparent methods for accomplishing government’s core missions. The conference exposes attendees to new ideas, technologies, practices, and partnerships. The conference’s goal is to help your organization build relationships and gain insights which help you build a more transparent, engaged government.

APPS CONTEST The conference also includes an app development contest on Day Two, May 14. Developers entering the Open Gov West Cross-Gov Apps Contest have the opportunity to transform government data into useful information accessible to the masses—and to win prizes like iPads, marketing assistance, and technology prize packs. Governments from across the Pacific Northwest will send representatives from their own data.gov sites to offer developers advice and support, making this a unique opportunity for developers to interact directly with government data providers while building the applications.

The competition will run in the style of a code-a-thon, in which development begins Saturday, May 14 at 9 a.m. with a 7 p.m. deadline, with winners announced that evening. Sponsor Tropo will be providing $1,000 in developer scholarships and free development kits for participants. Developers are encouraged to purchase a ticket through Open Gov West or apply for developer scholarships. For more information: http://www.opengovwest.org/events/conference/opengovwest-11/1304-2/

Portland Code Camp
Eliot Center (First Unitarian Church)

Portland Code Camp (http://portlandcodecamp.org), the annual free event that invites software professionals from throughout the Northwest to present on a wide range of programming technologies will be held on Saturday, June 4, from 8am to 10pm at Eliot Center (http://eliotcenterportland.org/) in downtown Portland.

This year’s keynote will be Scott Hanselman (http://computerzen.com), who will speak on: “Lego, Open Source and Sucking Less: An Overview of the MS Web Stack of Love”. A popular speaker who, by his own admission, doesn’t “sleep too much”, Scott is currently a Microsoft principal program manager, has been Chief Architect at Corillian Corporation, and a principal consultant at STEP Technology.

Come listen to a wide range of topics and technologies inluding talks on: Android Apps, Windows Phone 7 programming, HTML5, Azure, the Cloud, Asynchronous Programming, Open Source frameworks, and much more.

Through the generous support of its sponsors and donors, Portland Code Camp is free (registration is easy and painless at http://portlandcodecamp.org/) and includes snacks, lunch and what is best – the ability to hobnob with your fellow programmers while learning about many of the hottest programming, web and mobile technologies.

If you have experience and a passion for some aspect of programming technology or process that you feel would be of interest to the community at large, please submit an abstract before May 25 (http://portlandcodecamp.org). We are encouraging sessions that range from sessions that help folks that are new to a technology to those that demonstrate pushing the edges with various technologies. If you have never presented before, be of good cheer – Portland Code Camp welcomes first time presenters.

Zissou Society for Programming Language Exploration
Engine Yard

Inaugural meeting!

The Zissou Society for Programming Language Exploration (aka pdxlang) is a general programming language discussion/exploration group. The weird, the offbeat, the little-known, the forgotten programming languages. These are the things we'll be discussing.

We have three talks lined up:

  • Bart Massey will show us Inform 7.
  • Joe Groff is going to present on Factor.
  • Markus Roberts will give a talk on ... something. We're still working that out. If you've seen Markus present before, you know it's probably more fun that way.

Rumor has it that there will be pizza and beer.

PDX-UX: Avoiding the Spaghetti by Henrik Joreteg
Thetus Corporation

Agenda:

  • Snacks, Beer and Networking 5:30 - 6:00
  • Presentation and discussion: 6:00-7:30 or so

Join our google group here - http://groups.google.com/group/pdx-ux?hl=en  Don't forget to follow us on twitter - @PDXUX -  https://twitter.com/#!/PDXUX

Henrik Joreteg – “Avoiding the Spaghetti” Clientside code doesn't have to be an ugly cluttered mess. Building clean, sane, maintainable client-side applications is indeed possible. We'll talk a bit about CommonJS on the client, properly abstracting a model layer, the DOM as a dumb view layer, sharing code between client/ server and other techniques for avoiding insanity like automated static code analysis.

Henrik is a partner and lead JS developer at &yet (http://andyet.net), a boutique web software company in Richland, WA. He's a member of a growing group of javascript developers who are blazing the trail of realtime and single-page web application development and server-side javascript. Let’s put it this way: the dude cannot shut up about node.js, backbone, and socket.io.

He is the primary developer for &bang (http://andbang.com) and has written a slew of single-page real-time web apps using a number of technologies. He recently spoke at NodeConf and KRTConf and was a technical reviewer for O'Reilly's JavaScript Web Applications. He is the author of the popular open source javascript templating solution, iCanHaz.js and as an early adopter of Backbone.js wrote several definitive blogposts on the subject.

Zissou Society for Programming Language Exploration

The Zissou Society for Programming Language Exploration (aka pdxlang) is a general programming language discussion/exploration group. The weird, the offbeat, the little-known, the forgotten programming languages. These are the things we discuss and explore.

We've got two talks lined up this time, and we probably will have one more added. (If you want to talk, drop a note to the list or Matt.)

Featured languages of the evening include Nickle and REBOL.

There will be pizza and beer, if that helps you clear your calendar.

COPIOUSLabs TechTalk: The architectural underpinnings of C# with .Net
COPIOUS

COPIOUS is a user-centered digital experience agency. We build digital products with the user at heart and technology in our bones. We recently moved to a new office and now have a large space to host our TechTalks.

About TechTalks:

COPIOUSLabs TechTalks series meets every other Friday at 1pm at the COPIOUS offices. Our talks span artificial intelligence, new programming languages and techniques, computational linguistics, geographic data processing, systems and software architecture, augmented reality, network security, and more as proposed to the Copious engineering team.

About this talk:

Speaker: John Jessee

As new programming languages emerge, Microsoft's flagship programming language has been evolving to keep up. See how C# and the .NET Framework have incorporated new features such as functional programming, non-blocking code, language integrated queries, and more. This talk compares C# and the .NET Framework to the languages found in the book, Seven Languages in Seven Weeks, and in particular COPIOUS' most "native" tongue, Ruby.

All are welcome to attend. If you have a talk that you'd like to suggest presenting, please email it to [email protected] along with a brief outline of what you'd like to cover.

Rentrak Hackathon
Rentrak - Downtown

The Rentrak Hackathon is a gathering of laptops and laughter. Classically, we all sit in a square and type words onto a keyboard that then get turned into a "computerized program". It's a good chance to work on your personal projects, learn what your peers are up to (computer-wise), figure out what the best programming language is, and/or say the words "I don't have anything to work on" or "I forgot my laptop". This event is very informal, and there is no specific project we'll be focusing our efforts on.

Food and refreshments are served. RSVPing to [email protected] is appreciated, but not required.

Come check out Rentrak's new downtown office. Everyone is welcome to join us!

FutureTalk with Sandi Metz
New Relic

An exploration of the purpose of rules ...

We're iconoclasts who reject arbitrary constraints yet long for understandable, predictable, changeable applications. We want code that follows rules yet we refuse to let rules to get in our way. We're deeply attached to the little rules that help get things done (No trailing whitespace! Indent using two spaces!) and despise the big, complicated ones that impose one-size-fits-all straitjackets on otherwise sane programming problems.

This talk proposes 5 'little' rules for writing object-oriented code. These rules are determinedly simple yet produce code that experts love and novices can be trusted to change; they fill the space between anarchy and order with practical, common sense. The rules guide without impeding, help without hindering and constrain without binding, and let you create applications that are easy to change and fun to work their whole life long.

This is the 4th event in a series of free monthly FutureTalks from disruptive Developers, innovative Technologists and world-changing Creatives. Doors open at 5:30p for food, drinks and networking. The presentation will begin right at 6p.

Please RSVP via Eventbrite HERE

Sandi Metz is a programmer. In the past 30+ years she has written innumerable applications, many of which are still running today. Dealing with long lived applications has left her deeply biased towards practical solutions that produce working software that is easy to change. She is also someone who explains things, but has difficulty speaking without drawing on the whiteboard and feels inarticulate unless the conversation includes at least three colors. She believes in simplicity; simple code, and straightforward explanations, and strives for it in her code and in her writing.

You can follow her on Twitter @sandimetz or at sandimetz.com

RolodexPDX Turns One: Celebrate Entrepreneurial Networking
Moxie Studio

RolodexPDX’s next event will feature speakers Shashi Jain, Jeff Martens and Special Guest Speaker Marco Salazar de Leon.

Shashi and Jeff, with their years of experience with entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial ventures, will share inside stories, advice about cautionary tales aimed at empowering, educating and inspiring attendees.

Marco, who is flying all the way up from San Diego to celebrate with us, is an expert in community management and online engagement. He will share tips, key concepts and implementable take-aways about leveraging your existing network and how to build an essential team and tribe around you and your projects.

Plus, it’s a birthday celebration… so there will be cake!

The overall formula is simple: Three short and engaging talks giving by speakers who share their wisdom with the crowd of entrepreneurs, makers, techies, business folks, investors, coaches, and go-getters. After that, the group splits into smaller circles for a quick master mind session geared at authentic connection. Then the crowd rejoins for munching on food and great networking that is actually effective and fun.

What Beginners Teach Us

Check out our pre-event Q&A with Selena on the New Relic blog.

Open source as an idea has won. Linux dominates developer servers, open source tools are ubiquitous and being an open source developer rocks. And yet, we talk frequently about how to find new contributors, how to increase the number of people who participate and share code with us, how to improve the skills of the junior developers and hire them as fast as we can.

Selena has spent a considerable amount of time teaching absolute beginners how to program in Python, how to use the command-line and how to use revision control. These beginners succeed and fail in open source in both familiar and surprising ways. In this talk, she will share lessons from their experiences to help us create a more inclusive and welcoming future for open source software. Further, she will provide insights into the code review process, and how learning how to give code review (not just receive code review) is critical to becoming an expert developer.

This is the 7th event in a series of free monthly FutureTalks from disruptive Developers, innovative Technologists and world-changing Creatives. Networking begins at 5:30, with free food and drinks. The presentation will begin right at 6p.

Please RSVP via Eventbrite HERE

Selena is a major contributor to PostgreSQL and a data architect at Mozilla. She's been involved with free and open source software since 1995 and began running conferences for PostgreSQL in 2007. She founded Open Source Bridge, Postgres Open and speaks internationally about open source, databases and community. She is an advisor to the Ada Initiative, an organization dedicated to increasing the participation of women in open source and technology communities.

"Girl Rising" at Intel
Intel Hawthorne Farms Building 3 (HF3), Auditorium

Did you ever think you could change the world by pursuing your dreams? But how do you get there and reach your full potential? What does education have to do with all of this? Women can transform their lives by jumping in and getting involved in their dreams. At this event, you’ll see an inspiring movie called Girl Rising.

Want to understand the basics behind all the cool gadgets we use every day? It all starts with circuits! And we’ll have a fun activity for beginners.

What is this event? It’s a combination movie showing and hands-on activity. It’s a chance for high school girls to meet women in technology and a chance for women in technology to be inspired by high school girls!

Who's invited? We’re excited to have an Intel WIN and ChickTech event! If you identify with any of the following, we’d love to have you:

Current and past ChickTech: High School participants Current and past ChickTech volunteers ChickTech supporters Intel WIN members Women in tech and ChickTech supporters

Why should you come? It’s free! There will be snacks.

But seriously, this is an event to watch and reflect on women’s empowerment in tech by watching Girl Rising. We’ll also have an educational (and fun, we promise!) hands-on activity and create your very own circuit.

If you’re a ChickTech: High School participant, we’ll do our best to provide transportation to the event, free of charge.

Who’s hosting?

Intel WIN (Women in Intel Network) Oregon will be co-hosting this event with ChickTech.

Public Transportation HF3 is a 7 minute walk from the Hawthorn Farm MAX Station on the blue line and 4 minutes from the nearest bus stops on Cornell Rd on route 48.

Diversity and Education in Tech

› Please RSVP via Eventbrite HERE

Programming, Education, and the American Dream

The learn to code movement has popularized the idea that coding is a skill everyone can learn. It's the American dream: learn the desirable skill and you'll succeed financially. Liz will discuss the history of the American Dream, how new programming education endeavors have repackaged it, and how the lack of awareness and analysis of this privileged rhetoric is damaging our culture and workforce.

Liz Abinante is an engineer living in Portland working for New Relic. Previously, she has served as co-leader for the Chicago chapter of Girl Develop It, where she taught and organized programming classes for women and minorities. She is infectiously enthusiastic about web development, teaching, learning, and feminism. She enjoys knitting, writing knitting programs and patterns, and hacking away on interesting problems. Her greatest dream in life is to spend her entire day surrounded by puppies while coding.

Women in Today's Tech

At ChickTech, we're often asked exactly why women are so underrepresented in technology. This is a hard question to answer, because it rarely is just one thing. It's a complex mix that we often call "death by a thousand cuts". Janice will guide us through the stats on technical women in various national and local tech companies and then take a dive into anecdotes that help to illustrate some of the reasons why women leave technology at twice the rate of men.

Janice Levenhagen is the Executive Director of ChickTech. She has a BS in Computer Engineering from Oregon State University and an MBA from Willamette University. She believes strongly that the diversity and strengths that women can bring will push high tech to even more impressive heights. Her inspiration for creating ChickTech came from her own experiences in computer engineering and the realization that the percentage of women in engineering isn’t going to get higher by itself.

› Doors will open at 5:30 for a 30-minute networking happy hour! The food, beer and drinks are provided by Bellagios and New Relic.

› The presentation will begin right at 6p.

› FutureTalk is brought to you by New Relic in collaboration with TAO

› Stay tuned for the latest developments and updates on this and upcoming events by joining our Meetup group, New Relic FutureTalks PDX, and following us on Twitter @newrelic.

RefreshPDX: Young At Art – The Generative Generation
Idealist

Designers and artists are discovering the power of combining their knowledge of patterns, space, and colors with code and frameworks. Not to make prettier websites, but to create art. Interactive and infinitely generative code art.

But fear not: though getting into programming can be incredibly intimidating, code art, is one path to coding that can be fun, easy, and instantly rewarding. John Brown will show you some frameworks and sites that will get you started making art quickly and easily.

Occasionally, a new discovery will come along that changes the way artists create. Pigments in antiquity or screen printing in the recent past have given artists a path to explore. Now computers, and the frameworks created for them, are hitting the sweet spot of ease of use and power. Code art is still in its infancy, and creative coding is the wild west. It’s all about exploring, layering, and trying new things. Any creative endeavor of the last 5000 years has a digital equivalent, and there are myriad digital art paths that have no physical analogue.

John Brown will show you how to get involved in creative coding. There is a great community locally he’ll introduce you to. He’ll also talk a bit on the history of creative coding, show you some of his work, and talk about the future of code art and how it fits into the greater art world.

When you leave, you’ll want to rush home and pick up a digital paintbrush and start making code art.

Sessions run July 5 - July 22, 2016, and are open to all children in the Portland metro area. Please REGISTER at https://www.catlin.edu/page.cfm?p=1005&LockSSL=true and bring the joy of coding not only to your child but also youth who don't have access. Sign up for the camp and help youth who do not have the resources to enjoy a free coding camp through CodeVana’s Community Building initiative. The four camps offered are as follows:

CodeVana: Digital Game Explorers [July 5-8th] In this summer camp, students are introduced to the joy of coding and programming through games, simulations and they will also learn to become digital creators by creating minecraft mods or digital newspapers/videos. They will present their work in an end of the week show and tell. Students ages 7-10 have an option of full day camp or a half day camp.

CodeVana: Breakaway with Code & Things [July 5-8th] [July 18-22nd] In this summer camp, 10-14 year old students will learn to code, make, play while using Internet of Things and integrate their understanding of math and science through computing/games as well as learning how their minds and brains work. This camp is experiential in nature and will focus on collaboration, and creation. Middle Schoolers have an option of full day camp or a half day camp.

CodeVana: Girls Make Apps [July 11-15th] Girls and women in the U.S. are avid users of computer technology, but they are significantly underrepresented in its creation. CodeVana is bringing a fun girls only camp organized by girls/women to help girls discover the joy of building, computer science, and coding. Girls will build Games, play with Internet Of Things, design and deploy Web & Mobile Apps in a collaborative and creative environment as well as explore science, math, and social aspects of women in technology. CODE- Debugging the Gender Gap - Screening
Tillamook Station

JOIN US FOR A MOVIE NIGHT!
$5 suggested Donation. There will be popcorn, candy, pizza, and beer!

Doors will open at 7 pm, the show starts promptly at 8 pm. Older kids are encouraged to come. Tech jobs are growing three times faster than our colleges are producing computer science graduates. By 2020, there will be one million unfilled software engineering jobs in the USA. Through compelling interviews, artistic animation and clever flashpoints in popular culture, CODE documentary examines the reasons why more girls and people of color are not seeking opportunities in computer science and explores how cultural mindsets, stereotypes, educational hurdles and sexism all play roles in this national crisis. Expert voices from the worlds of tech, psychology, science, and education are intercut with inspiring stories of women who are engaged in the fight to challenge complacency in the tech industry and have their voices heard. CODE aims to inspire change in mindsets, in the educational system, in startup culture and in the way women see themselves in the field of coding.

A special thanks to The OpenStack Foundation, a donating sponsor for this screening.

Design Week Portland is launching its full website in mid-February, and we're calling all coders to help get it ready to go live! #FullStackPDX : Code Critique

CodeBytes - Show and Tell Social

Hello! This meetup is going to be a little different from our last ones. I intend for this to be more of a social meeting where people can bring in past CodeBytes projects to work on them or to do a little show and tell. This is also a good time to bring someone completely new to programming and we can help get them started!

If you have any questions or ideas please feel free to follow up with either Sam or Alison.

Cheers!

CodeBytes - Let's build a basic API

We have decided by popular demand to do the rest api challenge again! For those of you who have already done it you either extend the functionality of your api or help someone working on this for the first timee.

We will be building a basic API. For this exercise you will need to do some prep before the meeting. We have setup steps for Ruby, Python, and Node.js. If you are interested in a language outside of those let us know and we can try to accommodate. There are some examples in our API challenge repo currently for other languages check it out here: https://github.com/CodeBytes-PDX/rest-api-challenge

You can find the Ruby starting steps and basic app here: https://github.com/CodeBytes-PDX/rest-api-challenge/blob/master/ruby/setup.md

The Python starting steps are here: https://github.com/CodeBytes-PDX/rest-api-challenge/blob/master/python/setup.md

For now here are some resources to look through:

Ruby: http://apionrails.icalialabs.com/book/frontmatter

Node.js: https://medium.freecodecamp.com/building-a-simple-node-js-api-in-under-30-minutes-a07ea9e390d2

We are asking for voluntary meetup dues to help cover costs. The suggested donation is $3 per meetup or $25 for the rest of the year.

This is voluntary, and is not intended to stop anyone from coming to the meetup. If you would like to help us out use the "Chip in" button on the left sidebar. All meetup dues go directly to paying for the meetup.com subscription, food, and space costs.
