ThursdayFeb 27 2020Nike Tech Talks with Fastly CTO Tyler McMullen
We look forward to seeing you at the next Nike Tech Talks on February 27!
Fastly CTO Tyler McMullen will give a talk titled, "Making Functions as a Service Safe for Users."
Abstract: Functions as a Service has grown dramatically in popularity over the last few years. First, in centralized cloud computing, and now as the primary model of edge computing. The industry has put a lot of work into securing these environments against intruders; however, little has been said and less done to protect users against each other and against their own errors. In this talk, Tyler will introduce a new model for functions as a service, explain how it's implemented at Fastly, and talk about how it could change the way we think about end user security.
Speaker: Tyler McMullen is CTO at Fastly, the leading edge cloud platform, where he is responsible for evolving the system architecture and the company’s technology vision. Tyler leads a team of experienced technology innovators focused on internet scale and working on future-facing, ambitious projects and standards. As part of the founding team at Fastly, Tyler built the first versions of Fastly’s Instant Purging system, API, and Real-Time Analytics. Prior to joining Fastly, Tyler worked on large-scale web applications, text analysis, and performance. He can be found debating edge computing, networking, and distributed systems all over the world.

Enjoy snacks and beverages, as you network with fellow tech enthusiasts before and after the talk.
Abstract: As software systems become more complex, we look for strategies to move faster and produce more reliable systems. Yet the price of success is new and more challenging failures. If failure is inevitable, how do we cope? How do we learn from incidents and other types of failure? And how do our ways of collaborating shape the systems we create?
Bio: Beth Long is a software engineer who sneaked into a solutions strategist role at New Relic. Many years ago, she abandoned a potential career as a rocket scientist to tinker with websites. She has written, tested, broken, rescued, and taught code. She's the project lead for New Relic's collaboration with the SNAFUcatchers research project, investigating how tech companies cope with complexity and learn from incidents, a project which has caused her to randomly point and declare, "joint cognitive system!"

ThursdayJun 14 2018Nike Tech Talks
Join Eric Baer, Director of Software Development at Formidable, Inc., at the next Nike Tech Talks on June 14! Eric will give a talk on The Evolution of API Design from RPC to GraphQL. Food and beverages will be served, and there will be time to network before and after the talk.
About Eric: Eric has been developing products for over ten years in everything from embedded systems for high-end audio products to high-traffic APIs in Java. For the past six years, Eric has developed a deep specialization in JavaScript and the associated ecosystem. In his current role, Eric is an O'Reilly author, a conference speaker and Director of Software Development at both Formidable and at Livestock Nutrition Center, where he is driving large projects and writing software around Babel, GraphQL and i18n.
About the Talk: Over the last 60 years, API designs have changed to respond to everything from new network topologies and new languages, to the pressures of managing ever larger code bases. Today’s most popular API pattern, REST, was developed in a time where the cost of making API requests was plummeting. At the time, bandwidth was getting cheaper, latency was dropping, and the computing power of devices was still tracking Moore’s Law. Mobile turned this on its head. The environments in which apps and APIs need to perform today have effectively regressed a decade.
This talk will explore some of the new client-server interaction models that address today’s pressures and use history to understand the tradeoffs that we made at the transition between the previous designs. Eric will introduce major tools that are attempting to change the API landscape including GraphQL and Falcor. Since GraphQL is the dominant technology in this space, he will examine some of its functionality, touch on some of its syntax and present a live coding demo that shows off a GraphQL server from 0 to 1. Demonstrating a complete implementation in under 10 minutes will give a strong sense of what’s possible, and what kind of complexity burden a tool like this would impose. Spoiler: There is no silver bullet.

Food and beverages will be served and there will be time to network before and after the talk.
RSVP: https://niketechtalk-mar2018.splashthat.com/
ABSTRACT: In this talk, we'll use image recognition to take an existing deep learning model and adapt it to a specialized domain (namely: guessing whether articles of clothing are preppy, sporty, punk, etc.). Instead of using a more intensive data classifier, like a Residual Network, we'll use deep transfer learning to overcome a data scarcity problem and build on top of an existing model.
Once the transfer learning model has been trained, we'll pack it up into a dockerized container (specifying inputs and outputs, as well as a score.py file), and then call it as a web service. We will also discuss a #DataOps process for refreshing the model as trends change over time.

ThursdayFeb 9 2017Nike Tech Talks
Join Nike Digital for the next event in our Nike Tech Talks series on Thursday, February 9th from 4:30-6:30pm!
The Shape of Revolutions: How Things Change Ellen Friedman | MapR Consultant, Author, and Apache Software Foundation Committer @ellen_friedman
There’s a revolution underway in how people work with data. For one thing, streaming data is no longer seen as a special use case – and that’s a good thing because streaming is a better fit to the way life happens. Stream-first architectures are useful even beyond real-time processing. Another big idea has to do with where data lives: the big data revolution showed us that data structures spanning more than one machine are a good thing. But a new revolution involves data structures that span more than one continent (geo-distribution) and that go from on-premise to cloud.
In this talk, Ellen will tell a few stories that show how innovation with real impact can happen, including the shift in thinking and in engineering culture that underlie successful change. We’ll look at emerging technologies and how best to use them, new designs in architecture, and flexible practices such as a microservices style that have huge implications in IoT and other large-scale analytical workflows.

ThursdayJan 12 2017CANCELED: Nike Tech Talks
UPDATE: Unfortunately, the event has been canceled due to the snowstorm and poor road conditions. We are working on rescheduling this event.
Join Nike Digital for the next event in our Nike Tech Talks series on Thursday, January 12th from 4:30-7:00pm!
Apply Graph Theory to Infrastructure as Code | Mitchell Hashimoto, Founder, HashiCorp
Graphs are mathematical structures used to model relationships between objects. Modern infrastructure is a series of resources (objects) that have dependencies and ordering requirements (relationships). Thus, modern infrastructure can be represented as the mathematical construct of a graph. With just a few nodes, the relationships between resources in an infrastructure are easy to understand, but at a certain scale, the relationships become impractical to reason about.
Terraform relies on years of graph theory research to model the relationships between infrastructure resources so operators can safely manage and change infrastructure resources across bare metal, IaaS, PasS, and SaaS. Operators can avoid unforeseen consequences using Terraform

Real Time Operational Analytics at the Speed of Thought with Apache Spark Jags Ramnarayan / Chief Product Visionary, SnappyData
Apache Spark has come a long way since it began as a faster batch oriented map-reduce solution for Hadoop. With support for streaming, machine learning, and most recently SQL, Spark aspires to become a player in the realm of real time analytics at scale. However, much of its underpinnings remain batch oriented and unsuited for highly concurrent OLAP workloads. In this talk, we will describe how we are innovating and renovating Spark's core underpinnings to make it suitable for real time operational analytics, helping create a unified platform that supports row and column data, high concurrency, and approximate query processing at scale.
Scala, OODA and Entropy: Thoughts on Continuous Learning Adam Rosien / Engineer, Compellon / @arosien
In this talk, Adam will discuss Compellon's approach to so-called prescriptive analytics, which basically means "Ok, but what the *&^% should I do now!?". He'll talk about the barriers blocking domain experts from using analytic systems, how data scientists bias their models, and the evolution of Compellon's engine, written in Scala with Apache Spark.
Feel free to invite colleagues who would be interested in attending.
