Springboard Social Innovation Forum - Theme: Caring – Urban Grind East The Social Innovation Forum provides a facilitated, empowering time and space for proactive community members to unite, learn, gain inspiration, and create innovative strategies that address social and environmental problems in Portland neighborhoods. This month, the forum turns its focus to “caring.” Speakers, including Charles Lewis of Ethos Music and Amy Sacks of the Pixie Project, represent successful social entrepreneurs and people in the community who are leading community change; Workshops will review innovative trends in elevating the value of caring and how to apply these trends to your work and passion. Unfortunately, caring is something society doesn’t value much. We value numbers, and data. And we almost think caring is a weird thing to say. What does it even mean? This forum will bring caring to the forefront, and talk about how it's a wonderful thing to care, and to say you do. Do we talk about that on our websites? Do we ask others if they care? Do we acknowledge when they do? How do we help people care? When we care, do we act? Workshops: Engaging Volunteers Effectively, Efficiently, and Appreciatively led by Hands on Portland, Developing a Caring Economy led by Real Wealth of Portland, and Caring--Inspiration to Implementation led by the Giving Tree and Community Warehouse. Guest speakers include Jane Green and Melissa Owens of Children’s Cancer Association, Amy Sacks of the Pixie Project, and Charles Lewis of Ethos Music. The forum is your chance to talk with others in the community who share your concern. And if you have an idea ready to turn into action, you’ll find experts ready to help you get started. That’s all in keeping with the goal of the Springboard Social Innovation Forum: unleashing the potential of “ordinary” citizens to address local challenges with lasting solutions. Admission $5 (includes a light supper). To learn more about Portland-based nonprofit Springboard Innovation or to find out about future forum topics, visit www.springboardinnovation.org or contact: [email protected] |

DevGroup NW: Small Groups, Tightly Joined – PCC Cascade Campus Homophily describes the tendency of individuals to bond with people similar to themselves. It’s an obvious insight. But it also means everything to the analysis of any given online community. A web community’s success can be predicted almost entirely by asking: “Do the people drawn to this website share cultural traits with one another?” This is why Microsoft can’t launch a successful social network. While your average college radio station, or sports fan club, or local music scene are natural gathering places. With web communities, technology isn’t important - it’s a culture thing. |

CubeSpace Community Passover Seder – CubeSpace [ *sniff* out of business 12 June 2009] Passover is among the best-known of the Jewish holidays. It is a time when family and friends gather together for a ritual meal. The Haggadah, the text used in the seder (structured meal) explicitly encourages the invitation of "strangers." And many Jews (David and myself included) take Passover as an opportunity to bring Jews and non-Jews together for discussion and food (food is very important). We would like to invite members (in the broadest sense) of the CubeSpace community to the second CubeSpace Passover Seder. There are no minimum knowledge requirements to attend. Questions are encouraged and families are welcome. The seder will be on Thursday, April 9th, beginning at 5pm. Adults are $10/person, children under 12 are $5/person and children under 2 are free. Food will be kosher for Passover by ingredient, but we will not have special Passover plates. The seder will be vegetarian-friendly, and we will do our best to accommodate special diets for those that pre-register. For more information, please email [email protected]. Ticket Info: Adults are $10/person, children under 12 are $5/person and children under 2 are free. |

Transitioning to a Resilient Portland, Sept. 25-26 through St. Francis Church Dining Hall The Transition Initiative in Portland invites you to meet with us to begin planning and organizing an effort to build community resilience in the face of climate change, rising energy costs and economic decline. Building on work started by many organizations, we will put into action energy descent planning around a variety of aspects; neighborhood organizing; coalition building with partner groups; and a holistic vision of how we can cope with major changes in our lives. In the process we will create stronger communities and more satisfying lives based on sharing and cooperation. You’re welcome to come whether you are already committed or just curious about the possibilities. If you’re working with a neighborhood or a group with a related mission, we invite you to come and explore how different groups and communities can network and link together in a shared effort to build a lower-carbon future. Also, we urge you to circulate this notice to your group and anyone else you think should be there. Here’s the program:
What we choose to focus on is up to you. The Open Space format enables the people who come to create the agenda. Anyone can suggest a topic to discuss on Saturday based on the theme of creating resilience. If people choose to show up and discuss that topic, and to create an action team, it will become a part of the overall project. Some examples of projects that have emerged in other Transition Towns are
Later Saturday you will have a chance to sign on for any projects you have energy for and begin work toward crafting and implementing Energy Descent Action Plans. There will also be an opportunity to connect with others from your neighborhood. We are very excited about moving toward a more cooperative and joyful future. The knowledge of what to do already exists; it’s just scattered throughout the community. This is the beginning of our tapping and integrating that knowledge, making it available to everyone, and putting it to work in a plan for resilient communities.
And thanks to our cosponsors:

Galois tech talk: Computers and privacy, ACLU of Oregon discusses their 2013 agenda – Galois, Inc Presented by Becky Straus. Abstract: Efforts at the federal level to pass laws like the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) have attracted widespread attention and criticism, and rightly so. But Washington, D.C. is far from the only place that officials are making decisions that impact the privacy and free speech rights. State and local officials are jumping into the fray as well, passing laws or creating policies that have immediate impact without the spotlight that accompanies federal action. The fact is that privacy laws have failed to keep up with emerging technologies. This presentation will survey several areas where state and local officials in Oregon have recently been active, including reviewing policies on automated license plate recognition, surveillance cameras, and use of domestic drones. We will discuss how the ACLU of Oregon has been involved and what is on our agenda for the upcoming 2013 state legislative session. |

Community Leadership Summit through Oregon Convention Center The Community Leadership Summit 2013 brings together community leaders, organizers and managers and the projects and organizations that are interested in growing and empowering a strong community. The event pulls together the leading minds in community management, relations and online collaboration to discuss, debate and continue to refine the art of building an effective and capable community. At the heart of Community Leadership Summit 2013 is an open unconference-style event in which everyone who attends is welcome to lead and contribute sessions on any topic that is relevant. These sessions are very much discussion sessions: the participants can interact directly, offer thoughts and experience, and share ideas and questions. These unconference sessions are also augmented with a series of presentations from leaders in the field, panel debates and networking opportunities. |

Galois Tech Talk: Programming Diversity – Galois, Inc presented by: Ashe Dryden abstract: It's been scientifically proven that more diverse communities and workplaces create better products and the solutions to difficult problems are more complete and diverse themselves. Companies are struggling to find adequate talent. So why do we see so few women, people of color, and LGBTQ people at our events and on the about pages of our websites? Even more curiously, why do 60% of women leave the tech industry within 10 years? Why are fewer women choosing to pursue computer science and related degrees than ever before? Why have stories of active discouragement, dismissal, harassment, or worse become regular news? In this talk we’ll examine the causes behind the lack of diversity in our communities, events, and workplaces. We’ll discuss what we can do as community members, event organizers, and co-workers to not only combat this problem, but to encourage positive change by contributing to an atmosphere of inclusivity. bio: Ashe Dryden is an indie ruby developer living in Madison, WI. She's been involved with the web in some form or another over the course of the past 12 years. Ashe is an outspoken educator for diversity, inclusiveness, and empathy. She's currently writing a book on increasing diversity within companies, as well as working on a video series and site to serve as a resource to people who want to get involved. When she isn't discussing technology or it’s intersection with culture, she's cycling, tweeting, playing board games, debating the social implications of Star Trek episodes, being that awkward girl at the party, and waiting for her next burrito fix. |

Hacking Social Impact Unconference - Portland through MercyCorps & Eliot Center This November, the Social Venture Society will host the second Hacking Social Impact unconference, a collaborative and educational event addressing impact investment and social entrepreneurship. As in 2012, the two-day event will feature hands-on workshop, interactive discussion sessions, and networking. Participants will not only have the opportunity to bring their ideas to the table, but to engage in direct, powerful and informal discussions on the topics which will shape the socially-driven entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist. An unconference is a participant-driven meeting, popular among technology and social media-influenced communities, in which information sharing is collaborative and dynamic. Last year, we had a tremendous experience hosting impact community members and learning with and from folks from Ecotrust, Immix Law, Springboard Innovation, B Labs, Grameen Foundation, Mercy Corps Micro Mentor, p:ear, PSU Impact Entrepreneurs, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Social Venture Partners, Startup America, and many more. Schedule & Details: On Monday night (5:30 - 8:00), we will have a kickoff reception at MercyCoprs. Tuesday will be a full day of sessions, workshops, connecting, discussing, and hacking, held at the Eliot Center from 9:00-5:00. For more details and updates, visit http://socialventuresociety.org/unconference/. |

RolodexPDX Turns One: Celebrate Entrepreneurial Networking – Moxie Studio RolodexPDX’s next event will feature speakers Shashi Jain, Jeff Martens and Special Guest Speaker Marco Salazar de Leon. Shashi and Jeff, with their years of experience with entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial ventures, will share inside stories, advice about cautionary tales aimed at empowering, educating and inspiring attendees. Marco, who is flying all the way up from San Diego to celebrate with us, is an expert in community management and online engagement. He will share tips, key concepts and implementable take-aways about leveraging your existing network and how to build an essential team and tribe around you and your projects. Plus, it’s a birthday celebration… so there will be cake! The overall formula is simple: Three short and engaging talks giving by speakers who share their wisdom with the crowd of entrepreneurs, makers, techies, business folks, investors, coaches, and go-getters. After that, the group splits into smaller circles for a quick master mind session geared at authentic connection. Then the crowd rejoins for munching on food and great networking that is actually effective and fun. |

ChickTech's Scrum Workshop – DeskHub Come to ChickTech’s Scrum Workshop to get a refresher or an introduction to the world of Scrum. For two Wednesday evenings in a row, you will go through the core aspects of the Scrum Framework. This includes why Scrum works, the key players on each Scrum team, and how product development occurs within Scrum. Registration for this event includes both workshop sessions. You can register for the event via Eventbrite. Scrum is an agile way to manage a project, usually software development. Agile software development with Scrum is often perceived as a methodology; but rather than viewing Scrum as methodology, think of it as a framework for managing a process. -Mountain Goat Software The Instructor: Austin Richter, Scrum Master Austin, a Certified Scrum Master, has been working within the Scrum Framework for two years. Before that he worked as Project Coordinator on a team that was transitioning from a Waterfall approach to Scrum. Session 1, September 30th: Introduction to Scrum and Building a Backlog The first session will offer an overview/refresher of the Scrum Framework. In this workshop we will explore the differences betwen a Waterfall approach and the Scrum Framework. This will highlight the importance of feedback to a team. We will demonstrate these concepts by constructing a bridge and building backlogs. During the building a backlog activity we will explore the three roles on the Scrum Team. Session 2, October 7th: Sprint Simulation In this workshop you will build something for a customer using the Scrum process. Through this exercise you will go through each step of the Scrum process and produce the necessary artifacts to be successful in a given Sprint. From building a task board to demonstrating your product to the stakeholders, you will be immersed into the scrum process during the Sprint Simulation. By the end of this workshop series you'll have a comprehensive understanding of Scrum. Part of ChickTech’s mission is to retain women in technology. We intend for this event to build community and add skills to resumes. We encourage anyone who wants to practice the Scrum workflow to register for this event! Dates: September 30th and October 7th Time: Doors open at 5:30pm and close around 8:30pm. The sessions will run 6-8pm Location: DeskHub 334 NW 11th Ave Portland, OR 97209 Registration pays for dinner both evenings, along with the class costs. CHIFOO Event: Be Here When – Connective DX Community Room CHIFOO presents "Be Here When: Faith Based Communities Contemplate Technologies for Themselves" with John D. Smith, Co-Author of Digital Habitats! Churches and faith-based communities live with many contradictions that are completely irrational depending on where you stand or what hat you wear. Their irrationality challenges our normal thinking about design, technology, and human interaction. To understand what’s going on as a community’s technology steward you need to stand inside and outside, be local and nonlocal, be in the organization and outside, be a newbie and an old-timer, have a short-timer’s view and play the long game, be both geek and technophobe, and observe it all as an actor and as a barefoot ethnographer. Every day. About the Speaker John co-authored “Digital Habitats: stewarding technology for communities” with Etienne Wenger and Nancy White. He is a buddhist meditation teacher with a master’s degree in planning and architecture from the University of New Mexico. Working in tandem with scripted filtration tools, Moderators act as gate-keepers. Often under-paid and poorly supported, Community Moderators work invisibly at the heart of the social community. Each day, these individuals make thousands of judgement calls on behalf of the community they serve. At their best, Community Moderators provide personal care and an attention to detail which enriches each community member’s experience on an individual level. Their careful decisions contribute to a sense of safety and well-being that is the hallmark of a healthy community. About the Speaker Jasen Balmat is a visual artist turned tech-geek who leads the Community Moderation team at OkCupid. He holds BFA from The Savannah College of Art and Design. CHIFOO Event: Coding is for Coders: Why Designers Should Learn Business and What You Can Do About It – New Relic CHIFOO presents "Coding is for Coders: Why Designers Should Learn Business and What You Can Do About It" with Patrick Neeman, icertis! Most designers may have heard something like, "learn to code like your life depends on it.” While empathy for the engineering process is important, and that mythical designer / coder may exist, in general, this advice is misguided. Bad for you, bad for your team, bad for your organization, and most importantly, bad for your career. In this talk, Patrick will explain why you should not learn to code and instead focus on learning the in’s an out’s of business. He’ll cover: • Why learning about business is a good idea for any user experience professional • Why most businesses secretly want designers to learn business • What aspects of business are important to user experience • How you can take action to learn it in your organization • Where you can apply what you have learned to your current job, and your future jobs About the Speaker Patrick Neeman (@usabilitycounts) (mostly) in Seattle, Washington. He is currently Sr. Director of User Experience at icertis. He was Director of Product Design at Apptio, and Director of User Experience at Jobvite. After a complete redesign of the application, Jobvite received a Webby award for employment, and the Deloitte What Works award. CHIFOO Event: Is Design Metrically Opposed? – New Relic CHIFOO presents "Is Design Metrically Opposed?" with Jared Spool, Center Centre & UIE! The world of metrics and analytics have often been at odds with how designers work. Design is a process where we finely tune our intuition to create great user experiences. Yet, sometimes, what we think is best rivals the metrics. So which do we believe-our gut or the data? In the world of measures, metrics, and Key Performance Indicators some practices, like the growth hacking approach to increasing Monthly Average Users (MAUs), have hurt the online experience of Instagram and LinkedIn. While alternatives to satisfaction and net promoter score give insight into the design process and help designers have better instincts. If you’re ready to talk to your teams about what you really need, help management interpret the data, and create analytical experiments that provide design insights, don’t miss this talk. About the Speaker Jared Spool (@jmspool) is a co-founder of Center Centre and the founder of UIE. While he led UIE, the industry research firm he started in 1988, the field of UX design emerged and Jared helped define what makes UX designers successful all over the world. In 2016, with Dr. Leslie Jensen-Inman, he opened Center Centre, a new school in Chattanooga, TN to create the next generation of industry-ready UX Designers. They created a revolutionary approach to vocational training, infusing Jared's decades of UX experience with Leslie's mastery of experience-based learning methodologies. About the Speaker Mike Monteiro (@monteiro) is the co-founder and design director of Mule Design. He prefers elegant, simple sites with clear language that serve a real need. He prefers that designers have strong spines. Mike writes and speaks frequently about the craft and business of design. CHIFOO is celebrating its 25th anniversary all year long! CHIFOO Event: Breaking The Veil Of Research – TBD CHIFOO presents "What Happens When You Break The Veil Of Research?" with Nancy Frishberg, Senior UX Researcher & Coach! In design education, there is no ethical code that all agree on. What about computer science or any of the other disciplines we may have been trained in? The discussions of ethics and the real-life experiences that followed have informed my understanding of universal access and ethical responsibilities of design. I'll challenge myself to make the connections between these two endeavors (interpreting and design research or human-computer interaction) clear for all. About the Speaker Nancy Frishberg (@nancyf) has had several careers. The one most familiar to CHIFOO audiences is her work in qualitative research with humans, usually about improving products and services that people use and pay for and the processes that get them to those interactions and purchases. She has worked in tech companies, financial services institutions, and as a consultant to both for-profit and non-profit organizations. CHIFOO is celebrating its 25th anniversary! Thursday, June 7, 2018 Applying Clojure's Principles to Its Culture w/ Tom McTighe – Puppet Portland has a fairly lively Clojure ecosystem -- how can we leverage that base and become a hub of Clojure culture? The biggest opportunity appears to be in helping newcomers connect the dots. The language was designed to be clear, consistent, practical, and empowering -- this talk will explore how we can apply those principles to support the local scene and create an onboarding model other groups can use. Bring your gripes and ideas. Bio: New to the language and somewhat obsessed, Tom has worked as a writer, editor, and programmer. He hosts the Tuesday night Clojure Study Crew, and is currently building what he hopes will be the next best Clojure documentation tool. |

Community Leadership Summit 2018 through Oregon Convention Center From the site: The Community Leadership Summit 2018 brings together community leaders, organizers and managers and the projects and organizations that are interested in growing and empowering a strong community. The event pulls together the leading minds in community management, relations and online collaboration to discuss, debate and continue to refine the art of building an effective and capable community. At the heart of Community Leadership Summit 2018 is an open unconference-style event in which everyone who attends is welcome to lead and contribute sessions on any topic that is relevant. These sessions are very much discussion sessions: the participants can interact directly, offer thoughts and experience, and share ideas and questions. These unconference sessions are also augmented with a series of presentations from leaders in the field, panel debates and networking opportunities. Note from the person posting this: This event is free, easy to pop into and check out, and great for anyone interested in community. There's a strong tech focus as this is right before OSCON in the same venue, so if you work in tech and are interested in anything related to communities, it's especially useful. |

CHIFOO Event: Ethics In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence – MODA Tower CHIFOO presents "Ethics In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence" with Cennydd Bowles, Cennydd Ltd! We mistakenly believe that technology is neutral; that inert objects cannot have moral characteristics. And so we make embarrassing blunders – racist chatbots, manipulative research, privacy violations – that undermine trust and harm those we should help. This is a dangerous trajectory. We urgently need a deeper ethical dialogue about emerging technology, and interaction design's role within it. This session, informed by many months of ongoing research, will discuss: -Why companies make poor ethical decisions, -The development of ethical thinking in other morally-charged disciplines, -Methods of engaging users in the ethics of emerging technology, -Ways for designers to engage positively and affect ethical outcomes, so that design decisions benefit not only ourselves but our wider communities and the world at large. About The Speaker Cennydd Bowles' (@Cennydd) is a London-based designer and writer with fifteen years of experience advising clients including Twitter, Ford, Cisco, and the BBC. His focus today is the ethics of emerging technology. He has lectured on the topic at Carnegie Mellon University, Google, and New York’s School of Visual Arts, and is a sought-after speaker at technology and design events worldwide. His second book, Future Ethics, has just been published. CHIFOO is celebrating its 25th anniversary all year long! Bottleneck: Getting connected more efficiently – Tilt Eastside What if once a month, one of us agreed to block a couple of hours for a series of 10 minute meetings with folks who have been trying to get on your calendar? I know, crazy right? No wait. There’s more. What if this block of meetings occurred at a coffee shop or maybe even a bar? Still with me? Because here’s where it gets wacky. What if we all showed up at that same place those meetings were happening? Because we were invited. Not because it was random or something. And we invited other community members to hang out there too, like a happy hour. Then we ask the folks having meetings to do their homework to make the meeting efficient, to show up early for their meeting time, and to stay late so they get to meet more people — and get connected more quickly. It might even be that in the middle of one of our 10 min meetings, we could just point at someone in the crowd and be like “That’s the person you need to talk to, right there.” In my head, I’ve been calling the “Bottleneck.” Because that’s what I am. And that’s what I’m trying to solve for. And I thought it might be a solution that could work for you. And our community. And I’m down to beta test it as the meeting-haver if a few of you are willing to join me as the happy hour-ers. |

Indie.vc v 3.0 - Winter Tour 2019 – Autodesk Over the last few years, we’ve had the chance to host many events that expose founders to an alternative universe where companies they’ve been told can’t be built without massive amounts of VC funding are thriving with little, to no, outside investment. We often start these events by warning attendees that they won’t be able to unsee what they’re about to see. Many leave these events with a whole new perspective on not only what is possible, but why limiting exposure the traditional venture business model is beneficial for founders, employees and the cultures and values they’re hoping to embody with their businesses. Rather than write another blog post or clever FAQ, we wanted to bring that same in-person experience to those considering investment from Indie.vc. Over the next 2 months, we’ll be embarking on a tour of most major metros in the US (we tried picking towns that were a short-ish road trip away from just about anywhere). Our goal with these info sessions is to share our experiences and motives directly with the Indie-curious. They are open to founders interested in taking investment from Indie.vc and Angels/Funds interested in funding companies the way we do. We’re planning to have some founders we’ve backed, and founders who’ve built and scaled profitable businesses, join us for these events to answer questions and share their experiences embracing the values and tactics we preach. State of Womxn of Color - Advancing Community, Culture and Careers – The Riveter The future of work is one with womxn of color at the center. Join The Riveter and Future for Us for The State of Womxn of Color Roadshow, an evening to tell audacious stories of womxn of color at work, accompanied by an overview of the data, insights and solutions. This collaboration provides a platform for rising and established womxn of color professionals to share their experiences and next step strategies as they build powerful communities to create a future for where womxn of color lead at the highest levels across all sectors. This is a special roadshow edition of Future for Us’s State of Womxn of Color, featuring a panel of local leaders. Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty, Paige Hendrix Buckner and others will share personal experiences, discuss how womxn of color can navigate the world of work, and leave us with insights on negotiation, building community, and true allyship. Portland is one of the fastest growing cities on the West Coast. With its history of racial inequities and increasingly diverse population, it is of critical importance that we are actively working to build community, and ensure that across all sectors, womxn of color are in visible leadership roles across the city and state. Allies and champions are invited to come together to support womxn of color professionals through community, culture and career development - to create equity of access and opportunities for advancement. Together we can take actions to advance womxn of color and explore what it takes to build intentional communities for and with womxn of color, examine how allies can strengthen their cultural competency muscle, and explore what true workplace collaboration can make possible! 6:00 - 6:30pm Registration and Networking 6:30 - 7:00pm The State of Womxn of Color Presentation with Future for Us Founders 7:00 - 8:00pm Panel + Q&A 8:00 - 8:30pm Networking Why womxn and not womxn? The spelling of womxn is meant to show inclusion of trans, nonbinary, womxn of color, womxn with disabilities and all other marginalized genders. Both The Riveter and Future for Us use this spelling to indicate that our spaces and platform are open to anyone who identifies as such. We respect people of all genders, identities, and the use of pronouns that best identify an individual. Speakers: Paige Hendrix Buckner is the Program Director of Founders Gym, an online training center that helps underrepresented founders build successful tech startups. In the first six months of operation, FG has trained 70 founders across 7 countries, who've gone on to raise over $10MM. Throughout her career, Paige has operated at the intersection of education, entrepreneurship, and social justice. She is a well-respected leader in the Portland startup scene and has helped cultivate their ecosystem, including co-founding the Xxcelerate Fund for women entrepreneurs. Commissioner JoAnn Hardesty is also the Principal Partner of Consult Hardesty. She is focused on increasing democracy in low-income communities & communities of color, eliminate barriers to advocacy, public policy deliberations, and public policy improvements that create disparate outcomes in communities of color and low income communities. About Future for Us Future for Us is a platform dedicated to advancing womxn of color at work through community, culture and career development. OregonSQL - November Meeting - HiHo! HiHo! SQL Server on Linux, we go! – OHSU Janis Griffin HiHo! HiHo! SQL Server on Linux, we go! Are you being forced to the ‘Cloud’ to reduce costs? SQL Server 2017 now runs on Windows, Linux, and Docker containers. Now SQL Server can be installed on Linux in order to provide a consistent database platform across Window and Linux servers, as well as on-premises and in the cloud. This presentation will discuss the advantages of using SQL Server on Linux, comparing architecture, cost and performance. Several demonstrations on installing and maintaining SQL Server on different Linux distributions and Docker will be shown, as well as best practice considerations for production/development environments. Also, several useful Linux commands for monitoring, managing and backing up SQL Server will be demonstrated. Finally, client connectivity and tools will be discussed – plus the new Azure Data Studio UI with the ability to add monitoring widgets will be demonstrated. Alfred Burnett Simplify Database Performance and Management Database management is complex. Database professionals are increasingly being asked to manage not only larger numbers of database instances, but multiple database platforms. Open source and NoSQL databases along with cloud adoption are all having a major impact, and DBAs are now expected to ensure the best performance and stability of this cross-platform database environment. But what if you could meet growing demands faster and with less risk? This means you’d get more time to innovate and focus on important projects. In this session, you’ll learn how to proactively manage all your database platforms from end to end. Items of discussion include: · Scoring optimal availability and performance out of Enterprise and Standard edition databases · Managing hundreds of database instances with ease · Maintaining databases both on-premises and in the cloud · Decreasing overhead by managing databases with little to no impact on performance |

Community Projects in Times of Crisis with Marcelino Alvarez of Fresh Consulting – Online We all rely on the bonds of our community in order for our businesses to thrive. We seek intros to VCs, backchannels to clients, advice from our peers and mentors. In normal times, these bonds heavily rely on in-person interactions — coffees, lunches, beers, and 1:1's. Reading body language is a critical component to reinforcement of those bonds. In our most vulnerable moments, we want to ensure that the other party is present, listening, and empathizing. And beyond the 1:1 interactions, in social places like our coffee shops and coworking spaces, we create room for serendipity — that chance encounter that leads to something new and unexpected, whether it's a new business idea or a solution to an existing problem facing a member of our community. During this pandemic, we've been stripped of the ability to interact as normal. Sure, we have all these video chat tools — but it's not a replacement of our in-person interactions, just a digital proxy. And while those proxies may suffice for our 1:1 meetings, they certainly aren't helping with serendipity. So how do we form community in a time of crisis? How do we create space for chance? And how can we come together to listen, to engage, to be present, when many of us are already at our wits end staring at a video on a computer screen all day long? Join us for a mentor Q&A with Marcelino Alvarez, Chief Product Officer at Fresh Consulting. He was formerly CEO of Uncorked Studios, which co-founded Safecast during the 2011 Fukushima earthquake and ensuing nuclear disaster. He'll share perspectives from then and now as he undertakes other efforts to maintain his community and pursue digital serendipity. Building a sustainable and resilient company for the 21st century with Kate Ertmann – Online We're excited to have the chance to sit down with Kate Ertmann for a question and answer session. Her life's work has been focusing on building from scratch — or rebuilding and reorganizing — the operational infrastructure for sustainable businesses. That includes everything from the elements of a business plan, the importance of Mission and Purpose and Values, the how-to of defining Roles and Responsibilities, and when to hire and how to best structure that management org chart — as well as the finance that runs in parallel with all of that. Her distinct rallying cry through all of that work is the necessity of embedding equity and inclusion in all processes, procedures, and culture of an organization, and as a guiding principle in all leaders with whom she works — especially when it is "hard" or if there are uncomfortable conversations to be had. Kate constantly seeks to leverage her privilege and position: applying constant pressure to the systemic structure of 20th century practices so there can be systemic changes that will define 21st century practices. |

Portland startup community Q&A with Rick Turoczy of PIE, Silicon Florist – Online Join cofounder and general manager of PIE, Rick Turoczy, for an "ask me anything" session on the Portland startup community. He's looking forward to answering your questions about startups, startup accelerators, and Portland, in general. A little background on our guest… Rick Turoczy has worked in, on, and around the Portland, Oregon, startup ecosystem for more than 25 years. Throughout that time, he's worked for venture funded startups, founded failed companies, consulted, mentored, and worked to connect dots within and outside the community. More than a dozen years ago, he started Silicon Florist, a blog designed to capture what he saw happening in the Portland startup community. That work led to the opportunity to start PIE, the Portland Incubator Experiment, an organization he continues to manage. At its very most basic, PIE is an ongoing experiment designed to explore ways that established organizations — like corporations, governments, and educational institutions — can effectively collaborate with startup communities in mutually beneficial ways, thereby strengthening the entire ecosystem. PIE currently exists as an early stage startup accelerator with three separate areas of focus: Software as a Service (in partnership with Puppet), manufactured products (in partnership with Autodesk), and traditional consumer products like food, beverage, and apparel (in partnership with Built Oregon). Consumer products startup ecosystem with Mitch Daugherty – Online Join us for a conversation with Mitch Daugherty, cofounder and director of Built Oregon, an organization focused on championing the consumer product industry in Oregon. The greatest joy Mitch has found is meeting with everyone in the statewide ecosystem. Listening to entrepreneurial challenges. Looking for opportunities to connect them to a resource that could help them get one step further down the road. Engaging in conversations about breaking down the silos and echo chambers. He listened to stories and realized each one formed a piece of this tapestry that makes up Oregon. As he looked back on his journey, he noticed the common theme in all his adventures and career choices has been the effort to bridge gaps through interaction and dialogue. He cofounded Built Oregon as a way to build on a simple belief: that stories can raise awareness of companies and regions and help drive economic development. Throughout that process, he's constantly reminded of what he has learned over his journey: Conversations matter. And the most important conversations take place with those outside of your sphere of influence, and with people who possess opposing views. The value of a given dialogue hinges on conversations that are inclusive, honest and transparent. RSVP: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/consumer-products-startup-ecosystem-mitch-daugherty-ama |

PIE founder stories: Julia Niiro, MilkRun – Online Join us for a conversation with PIE alum and Techstars alum Julia Niiro, founder of MilkRun. See Julia's story about MilkRun at PIE Demo Day 2019 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbaIO9XltRg), her views on small local farms from TEDxPortland 2019, and the explosive growth MilkRun has seen due to the pandemic shared during Techstars Anywhere Demo Day 2020. MilkRun works with farmers and producers in Oregon & Southern Washington to break down the access barriers to local food. The national average for how far food travels to get from the farm to your house is 1,500 miles. That’s wild! We’ve cut down our average to 35 miles and have designed a system that leapfrogs the industrialized food system. Less travel = less pollution. More access to food = fresher, healthier foods! It’s not just about ditching the grocery store lines, it’s about keeping money in the community and supporting local producers. For farmers, we’re able to provide 6-7x what they’d make from a normal grocery store. It should be as easy (if not easier) to buy from local farmers as it is to order a cab or book a stay in someone’s house, right? 90% of the small farms in America right now are at risk of extinction. If mega-industrialized farming becomes our only option for food, we’ll have no more farmer’s markets, no more CSAs, no more farmers who are stewards to the land. Without radical new systems like MilkRun, the only options for food will be from huge corporations pushing profit over people, and we just don’t want to live in that kind of a world. We can do this, together! RSVP / Submit questions: https://www.crowdcast.io/e/pie-founder-story-julia-niiro-milkrun |

The Startup Community Way – Online Join us as PIE mentor Stephen Green talks with Ian Hathaway, coauthor of The Startup Community Way: Evolving an entrepreneurial ecosystem, the follow up to Startup Communities: Building an entrepreneurial ecosystem in your city by Brad Feld. If you have questions about startup communities — or what Portland could be doing to become a better startup community — you won't want to miss this conversation. "The Startup Community Way is an explanatory guide for startup communities. Rooted in the theory of complex systems, this book establishes the systemic properties of entrepreneurial ecosystems and explains why their complex nature leads people to make predictable mistakes. As complex systems, value creation occurs in startup communities primarily through the interaction of the parts—the people, organizations, resources, and conditions involved—not the parts themselves. This continual process of bottom-up interactions unfolds naturally, producing value in novel and unexpected ways. Through these complex, emergent processes, the whole becomes greater and substantially different than what the parts alone could produce. "Although we are living in a booming age for startups, we need to think about the future. When the boom times slow, what will happen to our startup communities, and how will we ensure that entrepreneurial success is still within reach for everyone? This book provides a framework for answering these questions, looking at startup communities as complex systems that—given the right resources and support—can help entrepreneurs succeed and benefit society as a whole. "If you have been involved in any way in building a startup community or entrepreneurial ecosystem in your city, The Startup Community Way is key to helping you understand the next phase of your journey." The book releases on July 28, 2020. Preorder your copy: https://amzn.to/2WKt4Qe |

Have you heard about this startup…? – Twitter Spaces I (https://twitter.com/turoczy) have been looking for an excuse to user Twitter Spaces, the audio only Clubhouse competitor. And an idea dawned on my that was basically an audio version of Silicon Florist. What if I held a Spaces event where founders got to pitch their startup or startup concept to an audience? We've had a number of amazing founders sign up to participate. Now, we need an audience to listen to their pitches. Won't you please join us? If you’ve got a startup to pitch at a future event — it doesn’t have to be tech — please sign up. We'll ask you to deliver a three minute pitch on your company. And then I may ask you a couple of follow up questions, but we won’t open it up to a full Q&A. So it should be a safe space. That means, even if you haven’t perfected your pitch, it’s a good environment to practice. |

Portland Lunch 2.0: Virtually – Online Just because we're still socially distanced doesn't mean we can't connect. As the weather starts to change, vaccines continue to roll out, and the glimmer of recovery grows ever brighter, there's no better time to reconnect with folks in the community with whom you've lost touch. And there's no better way to gather with a random smattering of your startup community peers than Portland Lunch 2.0. No agenda. No talks. Just lunch with your community. And while we'd love to buy lunch for you like we used to, this time, there is no such thing as a free lunch. You'll have to bring your own. Or not. https://www.airmeet.com/e/a78b59e0-9808-11eb-8b84-a77e963d9252 |

Ensuring your MVP Success with a Failure Mode Effects Analysis – Zoom Every product has challenges and risks that must be managed to ensure success, help turn your unknown risks into known ones through the FMEA process. An MVP (Minimum viable product) is a basic, launch-able version of your product that supports minimal yet must-have features (which define its value proposition). The tool is used to identify relationships between process and product requirements and the potential for unacceptable outputs and their effects. In this session you will: Review the various forms of product risk analysis used in different industries. Use a basic template to ensure all product challenges and risks are accounted for + managed with your teams. Access a set of case-study examples to help ensure successful use of the tool in the future. |

Startup Open Coffee in the Couve – Formos Software Welcome All Founders and Tech Pros • What we'll do You will drink coffee (and tea for those who are recovering caffeine addicts) and talk with other great founders and companies in our local area. • What to bring Nada. Just a friendly demeanor and willingness to meet new great founders and talk about your project. • Important to know This is REALLY not the place you want to come if you are looking for sales leads. This event is a place to meet and share your startup journey and talk about your project. While we appreciate all the members of our community, network marketing and sales reps will find many short unuseful conversations in this crowd. Thanks for understanding. |

OEN January PubTalk: Founder origin stories – TrovaTrip Founders and entrepreneurs possess a lot of the same characteristics like motivation, passion, curiosity and risk-taking that inspire them to start and run a new business. Yet, the pathways to entrepreneurship are wildly different and each faces a diverse set of challenges along the way. For our first PubTalk of 2024, Oregon Entrepreneurs Network is excited to bring to the stage three winners from the OEN Entrepreneurship Awards to share their own origin stories, the resources, and people who have helped them along the way, what has worked for them, and where they plan on going next. We welcome entrepreneurs at all stages to join us for this interactive conversation – whether to commiserate and show solidarity with your peers or to find out what it’s like launching and growing a business in our community. Cost: $15 for OEN members; $25 for non-members |

founder.coffee – Taborspace This month we are back at Taborspace. It's been nearly 5 years since we held a meetup in this space so we decided to come back. We will do our best to provide some signage so people can identify the group more easily. We've heard you and know that it's a bit awkward to ask, "Are you here for the meetup!" when there's nothing to identify the group. As always, be there thinking about ways you can help your fellow founders. No selling, no solicitations, just good conversations! See you there! Josh & Mark About founder.coffee: As a business owner, you are faced with many challenges. You're forced to make decisions every day that could make or break your business. founder.coffee is a way to network with other entrepreneurs to allow free-flowing information with the intent to collaborate and help each other. So often we're challenged and there's very little we can do to express our challenges with the people we work with or the people we care about. Think of founder.coffee as your own personal support group for business owners. We're all here to help! |
