WednesdayMay 10 2017I want to work for _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ meetup
Join our very special meetup session this Wednesday, May 10th 6:00pm to 8:30pm at Forge Portland. Our special guests this month are Scott Judkins, CEO of PayTrace and Trevor Redfern, CTO of PayTrace! PayTace is a super unique “remote-first” company. They are based out of Spokane, WA but most of the technology and business development staff members are based all over WA, OR and Idaho! Over the years, they built a very robust remote-first culture and have been thriving the last couple years. The company is growing at 35% per year and adding a lot of new tech staff (developers, QA and infrastructure folks). PayTrace has also built an intentional culture and goes to great lengths to nourish their values and build a great team-oriented workplace. They currently use the following technologies: Ubuntu, python, ruby, Ruby-on-rails, PostgresSQL, SQL Alchemy etc.
If you are looking to learn about a fast growing technology company that thrives on remote teams in the open-source world, you should definitely join!!

WednesdayMar 8 2017I want to work for _ _ _ _ _ _ _ with Sam McCurdy (JetReports)
This month, we will host Sam McCurdy, VP of engineering at JetReports. We might actually try something slightly different and have a panel of members from JetReports leadership to answer your questions this time! So definitely join us and bring along your "tech-curious" friends with you. If you are ready to learn what's out there (I know there's a lot of choice out there) in the tech world and want to explore options peripherally, this is the meetup for you... and has been for the last 2+ years. jetReports has a number of unique things going for them and I can't wait to dig into some of those aspects on March 8th.

TuesdayNov 15 2016Creating the Future of AI: Not Just for Silicon Valley Pt 2.
Forge is pleased to announce the second set of presenters in its monthly series on AI Morality, scheduled for November 15, from 6:30-8:00 pm: Steve Taylor from The College of Robotics and Eric Brickenstein an attorney at Hagland-Kelley LLP.
Steve will talk about where he sees the future of robotics going and how robots will interact with AI in the very near future. We are already seeing examples of robots using machine learning to learn from each other in order to better accomplish factory jobs, and as we move closer to AI, robots and machines will become increasingly autonomous from human input or control.
Eric will frame in broad strokes the fields of legal inquiry that may emerge as AI begins to have the ability to ‘think’ and ‘reason.’ Eric will address issues of privacy and how data can be collected; discuss briefly the potential for any legal framework to govern the development of future AI; and broach the topic of machine rights and a theoretical framework for considering when rights might attach to certain types of machines.
Our last discussion posed 4 questions: How is AI and AI morality defined? What are the dangers and opportunities associated with AI? What about our relationship to technology will always be true? And what about our relationship to technology will likely change as AI develops?
This session we will consider 4 new questions in small group/break out format.
Tickets are limited to 50 participants and sold out in a week for our 1st session. Beer will be provided.

WednesdayNov 9 2016I want to work for _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (this month is RazorFish)
For Novembers 'I want to work for_______' meetup we are excited to have with us Brynn Dirksen - Associate Art Director at Razorfish. She specializes in UX design and we look forward to hearing her thoughts and her journey in the digital marketing space.
An excerpt of her journey in her own words - "While I started my career in the design industry working on print projects, after joining Razorfish as an Art Director, I dove deep into the world of digital design. As a digital agency Razorfish has a large UX department, and from the get-go I was interested in this "experience-based” take on design. Razorfish encourages employees to experiment with other disciplines, and when I started exploring, UX opportunities immediately opened up for me. I had always enjoyed visual design but once experience design was thrown into the mix, the design problems I had once found interesting became truly fascinating. Jumping on the chance to expand my skill set lead me from a job I enjoyed, to one that I’m truly passionate about."

WednesdayOct 12 2016I want to work for _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (this month is InvisionApp)
We are super-thrilled to welcome our October special guest, Dana Lawson. Dana is the VP of Platform Engineering at InvisionApp. And the cool part is InvisionApp is a very remote-friendly company (more about this at the meetup session). Dana Lawson on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dglawson Invision on Twitter: https://twitter.com/invisionapp
Dana and I worked together at New Relic for about a year. The first thing anyone notices about Dana is her electrifying energy and her sharp sense of humor. You can tell right away that working with her would be super-fun and you could get lots of things accomplished with little or no stress. Dana’s illustrious career record proves my theory :) Dana had great opportunities to wear many hats throughout her 18 year career in technology.
Earlier this year, Dana wanted to take these lessons learned from being in that crazy world and do it all over again, but better! So when the opportunity came to build out a Platform Engineering organization at InVision she decided to take that chance.
This is just a teaser for all the goodness you can expect at the actual meetup. As always, you have our PERSONAL GUARANTEE that this meetup is the best value for your precious ~2 hours away from friends/family :)

WednesdaySep 28 2016Creating the Future of AI: Not Just for Silicon Valley
It is not too soon for social debate on how the economic fruits of AI-Technologies should be shared 100 Year Study~ Stanford University
Forge Portland is proud to present the 1st in a series of conversations on the future of AI and our role in shaping how the technology will be integrated into our economic, social and political lives.
Over the next 10 years our society will likely experience the most profound shift in the course of our history as computers and automation take over more and more of our jobs and daily tasks. While we are (probably) far from a Hollywood version of having Robot Overlords, innovations in automation, robotics and expert systems will fundamentally re-shape the nature of work and human interactions. The time to make these conversations mainstream is now.
Join us for a panel discussion with Heath Nieddu, Senior Research Analyst of Optiv Security, Ben Berry, CEO of Airship Technology Group, and Arun Joshi, CEO of Visulon, on the scope and definition of AI, innovations in drone technology, and how companies are using the Hololens and VR in business today. Each panelist will present for 5-7 minutes and field questions from the audience. Afterward, Rob Bart, founder of Forge and moderator for the series, will lead a discussion between the audience and the panelists.
A limited number of free tickets are available.

For September its going to be Gokul Surya from Nike!
In his own words, here's how Gokul manages his career:

MondayNov 16 2015PDX Code Community: Student Portfolio Project Showcase
Come see what all the fuss is about. These former students of Portland Code School (http://bit.ly/1MIKSSQl) have battled the odds and built some stunning working apps. See their projects, hear about their work, and talk to the students themselves. Doors open 6:00pm.
Fellow coders, recruiters, business, and any supporters are welcome. Please RSVP (http://bit.ly/1SptSQq) for anyone you are bringing so we have an accurate count. Light appetizers to be provided.
When the Portland Code School unexpectedly shut its doors over the October 16th weekend, midway through the fall term, displaced students and former instructors came together to continue learning on their own, complete their final software projects and display the results of their dedication at their showcase event. When Portland’s tech community heard the news, they responded with an outpouring of support, offering everything from domain hosting and student scholarships to catering. Wirestorm, a globally distributed software development company, which has provided the students with mentors and study space, will host the showcase on Monday, November 16th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., at their Portland office at Forge Co-working space on the top floor of Tiffany Center, at 1410 SW Morrison Street.
The event will showcase ten student teams who will unveil their final projects, which include innovative web applications and iOS-based mobile apps. The project teams have used a variety of technologies to show off the skills they’ve learned, including jQuery, JavaScript, Node.js, Backbone.js, Meteor.js, PostRegSQL, Orchestrate, various APIs, and much more.
Students, instructors, mentors, industry recruiters and tech companies are invited to attend the product showcase and honor the tenacity of the students whose mantra has been, “When the going gets tough, the tough get coding.”
A HUGE thanks to Wirestorm Portland for the venue sponsorship!!
