January SAO Corvallis Tech Pub - A New Scale for Nuclear Power
Renaissance on the Riverfront

PROGRAM:

A New Scale for Nuclear Power

The Corvallis Chapter of the Software Association of Oregon begins 2010 with presentation from NuScale Power, a local nuclear technology start-up that leveraged technology transferred from Oregon State University to create a revolutionary model for modular nuclear reactors. Kent Welter, a Principal Engineer at NuScale, will give an overview of the technology and describe how NuScale has shaped the future nuclear energy.

The world needs clean, reliable ways to generate electricity. The United States is expected to need 300 gigawatts of new capacity – that’s 150 times the capacity of Hoover Dam – by 2030. Developing nations can only grow as fast as they can power their economies. Global demand for new electric capacity will outpace the U.S. by tenfold in the same period.

Electric companies and government leaders are looking for ways to ensure their citizens have reliable, affordable supplies of electricity. They worry about the volatility of fossil fuel prices and the effects of green house gases.

NuScale Power is providing one of many answers to this problem. NuScale has developed a small nuclear power system that is safe, modular and scalable. The technology was borne of research by leading nuclear scientists with the support of the U.S. government. The design of the NuScale power plant builds on hundreds of combined years of operating experience with commercial light water reactors along with extensive research and laboratory testing of advanced safety systems.

Meeting future demand for electricity requires that we use what we have more efficiently. We must also look to new technologies using wind, solar and wave power and use proven technologies such as nuclear power to meet the needs of future generations.

Join us in for a night of networking and showcase with local technology leaders and entrepreneurs.

AGENDA:

5:30 - 6:15: Business Networking Time with finger food, no host bar 6:15 - 6:25: 30-Second Mic (give us your technology business elevator pitch!!) 6:45 Program: NuScale: A New Scale for Nuclear Power

CTO & Engineering Executive Forum: Adapting Manufacturing Principles to Engineering Projects
Paragon Restaurant and Bar

“Value Stream” is a term that originated with Lean Manufacturing meaning to analyze and design the flow of materials and information required to bring a product or service to a consumer. The whole idea is to drive out waste, deliver fast, build quality in, and engage all of the people involved in the value stream so that great products emerge. Urban Airship has had a lot of success with Kanban and Kaizen…

So wrote Mike Herrick, VP Engineering at Urban Airship in Portland. Coming from both an engineering and operations background myself, this caught my attention – the idea of using manufacturing principles to streamline and accelerate product development and deployment is intriguing.

Engineering Executives must assure that the flow continues all the way from blue-sky concept through development, productization, release to manufacturing, scale-up and support – often to a world-wide market. We’ve invited Mike to join us to kick-off our round-table CTO Forum discussions in April with a few anecdotes and reflections on what they’re doing and what they’ve learned.

Please join us for this opportunity to exchange ideas and real-life experiences with your industry peers.

PSU-TAO Cleanweb Hack (updated)
PSU Maseeh Engineering Building

If you haven't already signed up for the Hack tomorrow at PSU, we hope some details included here will entice you. To prepare our participants for a fun and productive day, below are details and resources for the Hack.

Goals: To generate ideas are innovative to solving environmental and sustainability, social equity issues through utilization of software and mobile apps. Don’t forget to have some fun.

Idea Generation: To start, you should ask the following questions: 1) What issues you and your team would like to tackle? (ie. carbon emissions reduction by buildings or vehicles, solar potential identifier, change of personal habits, e-waste tracking, etc.) 2) What do other similar applications exist on the market? Sometimes, building on existing apps can resolve a more refined product. 3) What is the marketability? Is it scalable?

The best project ideas are one that you are passionate about, and have some components of competition and linkage to social media.

Finding Data: While you are brainstorming ideas, you should also consider data availability as well. It is not the end of the world if you don’t have data sets or APIs to mock up a prototype. Simply build your own datasets, even if just a few that are enough for you to test out your product.

See the Cleanweb Hack resource guide for APIs, data sets, sample projects and project ideas. (http://tinyurl.com/m7a744e)

Judging Criteria: At the end of day, your prototype will be scored on these criteria: 1) Impact on resource and sustainability issues 2) Design and usability of prototype 3) Feasibility and marketability 4) Good use of datasets and APIs

Prizes: 1st Place - $500, 2nd Place - $250

Bragging right is priceless.

FutureTalks PDX with Arun Gupta (Doubleheader!)
New Relic

This month we are all in for a double dose of awesome! Our special guest will be Arun Gupta (founding member of the Java EE team at Sun Microsystems and director of developer advocacy at Red Hat in San Francisco). He will give not one, but 2 talks:

Devoxx4Kids:

So your kid is interested in programming, robotics, engineering?

Devoxx4Kids is a worldwide initiative that introduces programming, robotics, and engineering to kids at an early age. This is achieved by organizing events where children can develop computer games, program robots and also have an introduction to electronics. This effort won Duke’s Choice Awards at JavaOne 2013. This session will share how Devoxx4Kids is engaging kids at an early age and teaching them computing concepts using Scratch, Greenfoot, Minecraft, Raspberry Pi, Arduino, NAO, Tynker. The session will show a path that can be followed by parents to keep their kids engaged and build, instead of just play games. The attendees will learn best practices to organize similar workshops in their local setting. Tips on opening a local US chapter and how to build attendee base will be shared.

Continuous Integration using Java EE 7

Techniques such as automated testing, continuous integration and continuous deployment allow software to be developed to a high standard and easily packaged and deployed to test environments, resulting in the ability to rapidly, reliably and repeatedly push out enhancements and bug fixes to customers at low risk and with minimal manual overhead. What container-agnostic tools are available for testing, continuous integration and deployment of a Java EE 7 application?

This talk will provide a quick overview of Arquillian and how it helps in testing across multiple containers. Separate approaches for greenfield and brownfield applications will be shown. Configuring Jenkins for Continuous Integration will be shown. Setting up multiple WildFly containers on OpenShift for testing and production will be shown in detail. At the end of this session, attendees would have converted their development environment to leverage the power of Jenkins, Arquillian, and OpenShift to setup an automated Continuous Delivery pipeline.

Doors will open at 5:30, and the presentation will begin right at 6p. The food and drinks are provided by Bellagios and New Relic.

Please RSVP via Eventbrite HERE

PDMA Learning and Networking Event: THE FUZZY FRONT END OF PRODUCT INNOVATION
Lucky Labrador Public House Multnomah Village

THE FUZZY FRONT END OF PRODUCT INNOVATION

PDMA Learning and Networking Event

Thursday, November 20, 2014

6:00 - 8:00pm

Jon Marshall, President & Chief Innovateur, Innovation Frameworks

The Fuzzy Front End (FFE) is the messy "getting started" period of new product development processes. It includes opportunity analysis, concept generation, and pre-technical evaluation. As important as they are, these activities are often chaotic, unpredictable, and unstructured. Jon will provide an overview of this challenging period and then describe 2-3 tools or techniques that you can apply to start to bring clarity and order to this critical but least understood phase of the product life cycle. We will provide time for Q&A and an interactive discussion with the audience.

Jon is one of the area’s leading authorities on the FFE and innovation processes. For over 10 years Jon has been a fervent student and practitioner of many aspects of innovation, such as frameworks and models, creative and critical thinking, and metrics. His background in engineering and project management helps Jon merge innovation principles with the practical realities of developing products.

The Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) is the premier global advocate for product development and management professionals. The Oregon chapter's mission is to help local professionals and organizations to identify, develop, and launch more innovative and profitable products and services through cross-industry collaboration, thought leadership, and the sharing of best practices and practical knowledge. For more information about the Oregon Chapter of the PDMA, please contact: David Nash, Chapter President, at [email protected].

We encourage everyone in Oregon who is interested in the Product Development and Management Association to become a member of the National PDMA. For a great explanation on the benefits of membership in the PDMA, click here

RCSQE Presents: 'Multiply with Beaker' by Alice Nodelman (Puppet Labs)
CrowdCompass by Cvent

Rose City Software Quality Engineers (RCSQE)

Empowering software professionals to build better software for tomorrow by championing quality today

Tonight's discussion: 'Multiply with Beaker' by Alice Nodelman (Puppet Labs)

Beaker is an acceptance level testing tool developed by Puppet Labs that supports both multi-platform and multi-virtualization techniques.  Beaker tests combine basic Ruby with a custom DSL and are designed to be executed no matter the operating system or cloud provider selected at runtime.  SUTs of a variety of platforms (linux, mac, windows, etc) are provisioned on a variety of virtualization systems and are then validated and configured.  The result is a SUT abstraction that allows automators to write understandable and powerful scripts.

Northwest Regional Women in Computing Conference
Intel Hawthorn Farms 3 (HF3) Campus

The Northwest Regional Women in Computing (NWrWIC) Celebration focuses on empowering and encouraging women to enter the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields, particularly computer science. The conference brings together students from universities and high schools, with industry leaders from the private and public sectors to engage and inspire the next generation of leaders to play an active role in shaping the future of computing and technology.

The 2015 conference is the fourth annual event. Our mission is to encourage women to pursue and build successful careers in computing and technology by improving their educational experience and engagement with industry leaders. With less than 30% of STEM jobs filled by women, the industry is lacking full representation of the world’s views. This lack of diversity inhibits industry’s innovation potential. Our effort recognizes and empowers women who are part of the computing industry and celebrates all who are supporters of them.

If you are the following, then you would want to come:

College professionals
industry leaders
Job seekers
STEM/Technology leaders
Thought leaders
Professors
Teachers
High School STEM students (must be accompanied by guardian)

Elixir Games PDX
Puppet

Last time we looked at Supervisor hierarchies, and unintentionally on my part almost everyone picked up the GenServer behavior as a component of their solution. Damnable misleading documentation! However that prompted a further conversation about GenServers and other components of OTP (the Open Telecom Platform). In the spirit of learning and disambiguating things we'll take a deeper look at some of these architectural patterns in Elixir and how they can help us better organize our projects and design better systems.

For the newcomers, the "Games" format is designed to create a bit of friendly competition and is accessible for all ranges of experience; beginners and pros alike.

If you'd like to take a look at the previous sessions' exercises feel free to check them out here: https://github.com/elixir-pdx/, some submitted solutions are available on non-master branches.

Early in this series we'll be focusing mostly on solving problems in a functional paradigm, and as the series continues over time we'll move more and more toward Elixir's differentiators; Erlang interop, hygienic macros, & OTP patterns.

If all that read like gibberish to you, don't worry you don't have to know any of that jargon, and by the time you do everything will already make sense. Because we'll introduce ideas and concepts in a way that will help you understand those things conceptually before you ever need a weird name for them.

Food and drinks will be provided. There will also be small desk fodder prizes for the winning team.

Please make sure you come with a computer to work on and have Elixir pre-installed locally or in a VM and ready to go.

DesignSpeaks Presents: Peak Performance
52 Limited

DESIGNSPEAKS exists to explore design within the multidisciplinary: architecture, brand, communications, experience, film, fashion, graphic, industrial. We establish an interface within the context of real life, supporting the most compelling regional voices in design, and talk through to the heart of the practice.

PEAK PERFORMANCE Data, Design, and Driving the Future October 8, 2015 7 to 9 pm / 52 Limited Moderated by Tony Thacker

Tony Thacker is a longtime auto industry authority, author and book publisher based in Los Angeles. Most recently, Tony was Executive Director of the World of Speed, an educational motorsports-themed museum, in Wilsonville. He served as executive director of the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum in Pomona and the marketing director for the famed SO-CAL Speed Shop for 10 years.

Led by the enigmatic Tony Thacker, consider this a glimpse into a not-so-distant future of driverless cars negotiating rush hour traffic and carless drivers using augmented reality.

We’ll trace the path of Salem-based Nick McMillen from passionate video gamer to professional racecar driver and learn how the virtual and augmented training environments being pioneered by Keith Maher in Hillsboro give drivers like McMillen an edge on the track.

Then we'll take on engineering feats from self-driving trucks to land speed motorcycle design with Daimler Trucks North America's former vehicle dynamics manager Matt Markstaller and contemplate the future of automotive design with Aaron Pizzuti, a former design manager at Chrysler. From Pikes Peak to peak performance, where is technology taking us and who exactly is in the driver's seat?

Doors open at 6 pm. Come early for food, drinks and virtual reality demos. Your ticket includes the presentation, dinner, hosted bar, and a limited edition poster.

With Panelists:

Keith Maher is a leading authority in automotive simulation - from programming to podiums, he provides custom simulation solutions to automotive problems. With 22 years in high technology and a motorsports obsession, he founded Maher Solutions, LLC to help people in the automotive industry achieve their goals through simulation.

Matt Markstaller is a mechanical engineer who has worked in various capacities for Daimler Trucks North America for 27 years. He designed and built numerous prototype vehicles including Pikes Peak Hill Climb trucks, test facilities, and wind tunnels. By night, he designs and builds vehicles from open road racers to Bonneville record streamliners.

Nick McMillen is a professional racing driver for Nissan. Born in Salem, he took an unconventional path to professional driving by winning the 2013 GT Academy, an international virtual-to-reality contest that allows the best Gran Turismo players to compete for the opportunity to become professional drivers. He won the Dubai 24 and Silverstone in 2014.

Aaron Pizzuti is a designer specializing in automotive, footwear and consumer product design and creative direction. Following a life long passion for both automobiles and art, he spent nine years at Chrysler as design manager and senior product designer. He's currently Creative Director at Under Armour in Portland.

We've struggled a bit for the last couple months to fully tackle supervision and GenServer patterns, but we're going to stick with it until we emerge victorious, or until we reach our retry limit and permanently timeout. Discover the stories in your data, democratically
Uncorked Studios

Information is for everyone. As full participants in the knowledge economy, access to information is a basic tenet that we all cherish, especially when it comes to increasing that access to help make better choices. The better informed we are, the better decisions we make. Today, IT and dev functions in companies are often the guardians that maintain, manage, collect, and tend to the vast amounts of information that is being generated as data.

But what if we made it easier for all non-technical folks to understand data with intelligent, intuitive visualization tools? They would all have increased access to information! Our individual perspectives can bring about new insights where each team member stands to gain from finding their own perspective pattern in the data.

Our goal is to democratize data, to put the data exploration and discovery into the hands of the many.

In this event, we intend to fully involve the audience and have a personalized discussion on this novel new way to see the same data from different perspectives. What are the advantages? What are the challenges? How can the technical departments mitigate these challenges? These questions and more will be tackled. Speaker

Refactoring for Asynchronous Execution on Mobile Devices
CENTRL Office

To improve responsiveness, developers often use asynchronous programming architecture. In the post-PC era, asynchronous programming is even more in demand because mobile and wearable devices have limited resources and access the network excessively. One current development task is refactoring long-running, blocking synchronous code (for example, accessing the Web, a cloud, a database, or a file system) into nonblocking asynchronous code. Danny will guide us through the challenges of retrofitting code from synchronous to asynchronous while presenting program analyses as well as showcasing a growing, practical tool set for this process.

  • Speaker - Danny Dig, Assistant Professor in the School of EECS at Oregon State University & Adjunct Professor at University of Illinois

AEC VR 101: What’s possible, and what’s so easy you should be doing it yesterday.

It’s obvious why the building industry was one of the first to embrace virtual reality for enterprise. The experience of space, scale, light, and texture of a design are communicated better than any 2D rendering.

But VR for architects isn’t just renderings on steroids. The VR tools for verification and collaboration are changing the industry and the built environment for the better. We will take a look at some of the ways architects and contractors have already started using virtual reality, what it takes to get started, and what to watch for just around the corner.

Logan is a co-founder of Bevel, a company providing VR consulting and development for the AEC industry. He runs the Portland AEC VR meetup group. Before moving full time into virtual reality, Logan practiced as a licensed architect and CPHC.

PDX Python and Pyladies PDX Present Monthly Presentation Night
New Relic

Come join us for Pythonic talks!

This month, we're proud to present talks covering both advanced and beginner-friendly topics.

Thanks to our speakers Emily Cain and Allan Feldman!

Emily Cain Purrsistent Debugging

One of the most important skills for a software developer is debugging. How do we approach debugging? What tools do we learn? What skills are involved, and what habits do we pick up as we learn them? How do we teach and communicate about these skills?

In this talk, programmer, writer, and technology educator Emily Cain will explore these issues. Beginners will learn about key tools like PDB and the browser's debugger, as well as learning to inspect code and function outputs to look for patterns. Meanwhile, more advanced coders will learn techniques for understanding and discussing these skills, and gain a better perspective on how to help their more junior colleagues advance beyond the "Googling StackOverflow" stage of debugging. And everyone will get to look at adorable pictures of a particularly dedicated cat as she "debugs" her way into an infinite supply of snacks.

Allan Feldman Reference cycles: what are they, how to detect them, and how to fix them

Let's talk about garbage! Ever had a long-running Python process whose memory usage seemed to grow over time? In this talk, Allan Feldman, Senior Software Engineer at New Relic, dives into Python internals to show how reference cycles can happen, how to find them in your code, and how to fix a cycle once found. You'll never look at garbage the same way again!

We'll also open things up for some 3-5 minute Lightning Talks afterward. Are you working on something cool or did you discover a new tool or package? Get up and talk about it!

Submit proposals for talks here: http://bit.ly/portland-python-proposals

All speakers and attendees must follow our code of conduct: http://www.meetup.com/pdxpython/pages/Code_of_Conduct/

Join us after the meetup at Bailey's taproom at 213 SW Broadway to continue the discussion over a beverage.

Digital Undergrounds: Tools for Radicals and Futurists
People's Food Co-op

We hear a lot about the entrepreneurs, engineers, and companies that shape the digital landscape. But what about the communities that radicalize and transform the world, enacting power from below, using digital technology?

With a series of guest speakers and artists from Portland’s tech and creative scene, we will examine:

  • The question of digital globalization and the emergence of tech in Africa, Latin America, and in indigenous communities.
  • What it means to be an engineer: How do gender, race, and place affect who is recognized as such, and who is not?
  • The relationship of Black aesthetics, girl culture, and the global arts to the digital world, which draws heavily from this creativity in form and content.
  • Ways to advocate for distributing digital resources to marginalized groups in the Portland area and beyond.

Instructor: Ali Colleen Neff, Ph.D. is a digital anthropologist, UX researcher, and the founder of CultureEncode, a center for advocacy and consulting for digital diversity.

Agile Engineering Course - Certified Scrum Developer (CSD)
through Courtyard by Marriott - Portland

In an effort to raise the effectiveness of Scrum, the Scrum Alliance created the Certified Scrum Developer (CSD) program (AKA Agile Engineering course.) A Certified Scrum Developer is someone who has demonstrated through a combination of formal training and a technical skills assessment that he or she has a working understanding of Scrum principles and has learned specialized Agile engineering skills.

This three-day class is aimed at helping software development professionals and teams be more effective when implementing Scrum and other Agile methodologies. You will learn how to create and maintain high quality systems through industry standard practices such as Test Driven Development (TDD), Continuous Integration (CI) and common software design patterns. This class was specifically designed to deliver the core Agile Development Practices Learning Objectives of the CSD program and should prepare the participant to successfully pass the Scrum Alliance CSD Candidate Assessment.

This class focuses on automated testing, TDD (heavily covered in class), Continuous Integration, Design Concepts (Design Principles and Practices) and Extreme Programming (XP) practices. Class is hands-on, and you will participate in a project where you will build an actual feature using Agile practices and learn about the technical practices. You'll learn about how team members interact during sprints. Other topics covered include Technical Debt: Strategies & Techniques to help reduce technical debt.

In order to earn the CSD certification, the Scrum Alliance requires at least five days of formal training followed by a CSD assessment/evaluation. This class fulfills 21 of the required 35 hours and can be paired with the Certified ScrumMaster class to complete the requirement.

Blockbuster. Kodak. Tower Records. Nokia. Taxi Industry. Compaq. These companies were all iconic market leaders that couldn’t adapt to new business models and technology innovations ahead of their competitors. Our world is changing fast. Markets and consumers are demanding faster, cheaper, and better products. Demands for quicker turnaround on new product development and innovation have only increased. Enterprises must learn how to adapt quickly to these changing technologies and economic conditions or they will become extinct, no matter their size, smarts, or strength. This holds true even for businesses that don’t consider themselves Information Technology (IT) or software companies. Professional services, financial services, healthcare institutions, and government entities are all highly dependent on their ability to produce new technology-based products and services. How do companies like Google, Yahoo, Amazon, and Apple keep up? They practice agile techniques.

Would you like to share your code project or find inspiration from another project?

We'll run this meetup with the leancoffee.org method. Our community enjoys sharing code projects, however, the topics can be about any project you want to share. If you don't have a project, don't worry, I have a couple of projects to get us started.

Stay inspired! Garrett

Dorkbot: July Edition
Ctrl-H / PDX Hackerspace

Part hackathon, part geek social, Dorkbot is a relaxed, informal gathering of makers, creatives, electronic artists, circuit designers, programmers, video game designers, digital archeologists, hackers, cyberpunks, and mod synth gearheads in Portland, Oregon.

Bring your electronic wonders (or monsters) for others to see, or come see what others have been painstakingly chipping away at in their spare time. Whether it's code or circuits, electronic creativity of all sorts is welcome here.

Table space with power will be available for project show-and-tell; we'll have ice and a table for drinks and snacks, feel free to contribute to the communal cache/BYOB. The Free Bin is back, take or leave some components (don’t leave TOO much, if you have big stuff, maybe check the Discord/mailing list to see if anyone is interested in taking it first!)
