Dev Nation
Ace Hotel

In early 2009, several developers from Relevance and Viget Labs got together and starting talking about technical conferences. As we discussed our past experiences at regional, national, and international events, we began to realize something: large conferences are wonderful for a lot of things, but we wanted something that met a different set of goals. We came up with Developer Day, which was designed to:

  • Build lasting relationships among local peers
  • Bridge distinct technical communities

After a year of Developer Days, however, we decided a new look was in order, and thus was born DevNation. We've still got the same ideals, but we feel that the DevNation name better reflects that vision (and it's easier to Google!)

Relationships

The general pattern for a large conference runs something like this: you fly to a city, go to the event, have a great time, meet lots of great people, and fly home. More often than not, you don't see those people again until the next big conference, and that's a problem. We wanted our event to be different, so it's intentionally local. Speakers and attendees are overwhelmingly local to the conference, so when you meet someone doing something cool, you can connect with them a week later for lunch without a problem.

Technology-Agnostic

Sure, there are events that draw a wide range of developers (e.g., OSCON), but even then people tend to segregate; the Pythonists go to their sessions, the Rubyists to theirs, and the PHP devs to theirs. By having only one track, we give everyone the opportunity to see what's happening in other communities.

Front End PDX - Monthly Front End PDX Meetup
Connective DX

Unfortunately, tonight's speaker Micah and his family have come down with the flu, and he will not be able to speak tonight. We'll still hold the meetup, but we'll set up for a Bring Your Own Project night: bring a project to share (or get help with), or come ready to give help to others.
We're working on rescheduling Micah for February. We'll leave the talk description up for now to give you an idea of what's coming.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For the final Meetup of 2017, we welcome back Micah Godbolt to talk design systems!

About the talk:
HTML and CSS are all you need to create a Design System that unifies the visual appearance of your products, but as soon as you want to create consistent behavior between applications, you'll need to turn to JavaScript. More often than not, using a modern framework such as React, Vue, or Angular will save you lots of time, and keep you from reinventing the wheel.

In this talk, I will discuss how moving interactivity into the Design System is not only a good choice today, but is most certainly how you will be creating Design Systems in the future. I'll also be discussing the React-powered Design System I've been helping to create which powers a few apps you might have heard of, including SharePoint, OneDrive, and Outlook for the web.

About the speaker:
Micah Godbolt, a Senior Design Developer at Microsoft, is a Front-end Architect, author, speaker, trainer, blogger and developer from the Portland area.

Event Details

Food, drinks, and conversation beginning at 6:30. The talk begins around 7:00.

Parking is available in the parking lot directly across the street from the Connective DX office on Pettygrove. There are also bike racks available just inside the entrance to the building.

Front End PDX - Monthly Front End PDX Meetup
Connective DX

This month we're excited to have Josh Nelson join us to talk through making in-browser, multiplayer games, using a recent project called PlinkoJS as an example.

PRESENTATION DETAILS

Making a game is simple, right?

How about adding physics to it? What if we ran it in the browser and made it a real-time multiplayer?

I think you can see that very quickly what was once a straightforward challenge has ballooned into a much more significant undertaking. The browser is not a particularly friendly environment for multiplayer games, especially those that need to be responsive and real-time.

This presentation will walk us through core challenges that every developer will face when trying to make an in-browser game and how they can overcome them. Josh will highlight key concepts and solutions using a game he recently built in Node and React as an example, PlinkoJS.

The following topics will be covered:

• Games in the browser - The building blocks for a local, in-browser game
• Network architecture - Connecting players over the internet
• State synchronization - Creating and maintaining an authoritative game state
• Optimizations - Reducing bandwidth and latency estimation

SPEAKER DETAILS

Josh Nelson is a software engineer with a management background from Portland State University. He has experience working with technologies such as React, Node, Rails, Backbone, and more. He enjoys tackling challenging problems and working with others to build robust systems.

• PlinkoJS: www.plinkojs.com
• GitHub: https://github.com/joshcnelson

EVENT DETAILS

Food, drinks, and conversation beginning at 6:30. The talk begins around 7:00.

Paid parking is available in the lot directly across the street from the Connective DX office on Pettygrove. On-street parking is available in the neighborhood as well, of course, if you can find it. There are also bike racks available just inside the entrance to the building.

Refresh PDX: Bauhaus in the Browser
FINE

Attendees will get a showcase of how these new digital techniques can be applied to the web by journeying back to the past—nearly 100 years—to one of the most notable periods in the history of design: Bauhaus modernism. During this period, design was highly influential yet gleefully experimental, with strict geometry, overlapping elements, and rotated text. Attendees will see works by artist Piet Mondrian, typographer Jan Tschichold, dadaist Kurt Schwitters, and metal-worker Marianne Brandt recreated or redesigned on screen, and optimized for the new medium of mobile devices.

Refresh Portland — The Shady Web: How CSS is your brand’s body language
FINE

Navigating the web has turned into a treacherous exercise. Between sidebars, popups, scroll overs, and pre-checked boxes, you have to avoid the content you don’t want to unearth the content you do want. As these practices in distraction and diversion become the norm, marketers are pressured to follow suit. Just because marketers can, does not mean that we should. We need to do better. We shouldn’t have to resort to cheap tricks and bait-and-switch tactics to generate sales.

Together we will look at the difference between influencing genuine user behavior and tricking people through the use of CSS patterns and interactions. Learn how you can add motion into your digital properties in a way that builds trust with your users and gives them what they need, and nothing more.

Our Presenter, Heidi Olsen

Heidi Olsen has navigated through the treacherous world of web development for the past 9 years. Her goal is to make the web less shady and more thoughtful. You may find her browsing Twitter, blogs, and Slack channels in search of finding better approaches to our digital space.

Heidi is currently a Senior Developer at eROI, a full-service creative agency in Portland, Ore. eROI partners with innovative brands such as Taco Bell, Nike, and Aramark to craft compelling experiences.

Kurtis Holsapple presents Procedural Code to Testable Code

During this talk we'll look at how we can transform existing PHP code to cover it with a few unit tests. If you've never written a test, or want to see how we can cover a legacy code base with a brand new test suite, we'll be doing it live! We'll start with a basic contact form and build out a brand new testing setup based on PHP Unit and Composer, and when we're done we'll try to build out additional functionality all covered by unit tests.

Graybox

Pizza, learning and a great time to network with the fabulous PHP Community!

Does your site have a good search mechanism? Does it offer adequate quality for results? Is it a sustainable solution for the foreseeable scale required by your site? This week Chris Irvine will share experiences from a recent project, where he converted a site's traditional search method over to a search service, specifically AWS CloudSearch. Key topics will be:

What can go wrong with typical RDBMS based search solutions?
What is a search service? What does AWS CloudSearch offer specifically?
Live demo: Setup a sample search domain and explore available features
A look at the AWS PHP SDK
Case study: Walk through implementation details for a given site
How much improvement did we measure? What didn't work?
Lessons learned, the good and bad of The Cloud.

Chris Irvine is a Senior Technology Consultant and founder at Threeprong.com LLC, specializing in performance tuning, B2B integration, and custom workgroup solutions. He's local to the Portland area and a PSU alum. His professional experience includes management roles in multiple industries, and numerous development and database environments. PHPDX - Up to my Eyeballs in Technical Debt!
Graybox

**PLEASE NOTE THE DAY HAS CHANGED. We will be meeting on a monday this month. There will still be pizza, learning and networking with the fabulous PHP Community!**

Every decision we make in our projects has the potential to increase or reduce technical debt. While the only way to completely eliminate the debt is to never write any code, there are steps that we as engineers, project managers, and project stakeholders can take to mitigate our risk.

This talk covers the concept of technical debt, its potential to devastate projects, and red flags that project teams can look for to reduce its impact before it spirals out of control.

PHPDX - Static Sites: Use Your Smarts to Build Something Dumb
Graybox

Pizza, learning and a great time to network with the fabulous PHP Community!

Join us as Kurtis Holsapple shares about Static Sites.

Let's build out a site with no serverside processing at all. Static sites are nothing more than static files put up on a server that doesn't need any serverside runtimes. That means that you can host your site on places like Github Pages, AWS S3, or any other cheap hosting options. We can still leverage our PHP knowledge to build cools sites that have good structure and lots of content. You can still create things like blogs, collections of data, product listings, and more.

PDX PHP - Using Generators to Beat Memory Bloat
ImpactFlow

There will be food, give-a-ways (elePHPants) and a great time getting to know your fabulous PHP Community!

6:30 - We'll start off with Pizza and networking at 6:30

6:45 - 7:45 - Move into the presentation on Generators, by Korvin Szanto

Memory usage is something that we as developers have to be aware of. Ever debugging a memory issue and find that your once small dataset has ballooned out of proportion? And instead of dealing with the issue, you opt for upping the memory limit? Iterators can be the answer but they require a lot of code and can be very difficult to understand at a glance. Thankfully since PHP 5.5 Generators help us create and manage what would be complex iterators with simple syntax sugar. In this talk I will go over some of the ways you can implement generators and cure your memory bloat.

7:45 - Prizes

7:45 - 8:30 - Hack and Help. Have a chance to try out Generators for yourself, or bring your own project and get some help from the community.

PDX PHP - The Red Team is Coming!
ImpactFlow

There will be food, give-a-ways (elephpants), and a great time to network with the fabulous PHP Community!

This month we will have a special guest speaker from Las Vegas:

Adam Englander is an Engineer, Speaker, and Author with 30 years of experience in building business applications. He has been an outspoken evangelist of PHP during what he calls “The PHP Renaissance”. Adam is a strong believer in the power of strong developer communities. He is a actively involved in the Las Vegas technical community and the Founder of PHP Vegas. Always looking to push the boundaries of what is possible with PHP, Adam has been working to expose the PHP community at large to IoT and asynchronous programming. He also advocates building better applications today by building well tested applications that are cryptography secure.

The Red Team is Coming!

The Red Team, hackers, criminal organizations, and nation states, are a constant threat. The systems we build are the targets. We need to understand the human collateral that hangs in the balance. We embrace methodologies to write better code and make our lives better. They do nothing for the rest of humanity that is directly affected by security vulnerabilities we introduce. In this presentation, I will put a human face on the users of our software. I will challenge you to think in terms of flesh and blood rather than ones and zeros. We are all the Blue Team. We protect the rest of humanity. Join me in the fight. The Red Team is coming!

PDX PHP - Using the Null Object Pattern
ImpactFlow

Food, give-a-ways, speakers and a great time to network with the fabulous PHP Community!

Using the Null Object Pattern

When you develop OO PHP applications, you'll eventually get the error message "PHP Notice: Trying to get property of non-object". You can add a conditional to check if an object is null. There is however a better way. Null Object Pattern is a design pattern that helps you to simplify your application logic. The Null Object patthern removes the need to check for an object vs null by using Polymorphism. I'll demonstrate how it works with generic PHP code, and how you can apply it to work with database results.

Presented by Andrew Woods

Andrew Woods is a seasoned Web Developer, and a command line aficionado. He's been making websites since 1999. He organizes the Seattle PHP User Group (@seaphp) and Pacific Northwest PHP conference (@pnwphp). He's an advocate for the open web, and values accessibility and design. PDX PHP - PHP TestFest!
ImpactFlow

There will be food and participation, so bring a computer!

PHP TestFest seeks to create more PHP core contributors by introducing PHP programmers to the PHP language test suite, teaching them how to write phpttests. From September through December, 2017, groups worldwide will meet physically or virtually to learn how to write and contribute phpt tests. You don’t have to be a C genius—in fact, you don’t need to know C at all to contribute.1 If you can write a few lines of PHP, you can write a phpt test.

PHP TestFest wouldn’t be complete without prizes. We’re still working out the details, so we’ll announce prizes and how to win them soon.

This kick-off meeting will be a mini-hackathon which will include information on setting up your environment and how to write and contribute phpt tests. We'll be able to continue working on our test together in the slack channel and at other meetups, so you'll want to get started with us now!!!

In short, it's a gathering of (1) Joomla fanatics, (2) Joomla newbies, (3) Joomla-curious, and (4) others who maybe aren't totally "in love" with Joomla, but who might not mind fooling around a little bit with Joomla if there's beer involved, if you know what we mean. (Okay, actually, we don't even know what we mean by that one.)

What we were thinking was: If you've got a web site and are having some technical difficulties, then come to our open house, bring (1) any Joomla, web development, technical, or philosophical questions you like, no matter how easy or tough they are, (2) your laptops if you want to do some work right then and there (or, we may also project your site up onto the wall and work on it in front of others, if that's cool with you), and (3) your admin usernames/passwords, of course, if you want us to be able to look at your Joomla issues. And, if you have a "service dog," bring him or her along, too -- because, remember, here in Portland, no one ever asks you to verify whether your pooch is or isn't working. Anyway, your humble Joomla in-house experts will then roll up our sleeves and do the best we can to either fix your issue or at least point you in the right direction.

Types of tech difficulties: Actually, we're fairly open-minded here... Bring us any web-development challenge you're having and we're happy to talk about it -- even it it's not 100% Joomla-related. For example, maybe you're having trouble using CSS, or you're facing a user experience challenge, or you don't understand how MySQL works, or you need a little bit of PHP wizardry. Bring it on. We're not saying we'll actually solve your issue right then and there, but we're certain that we're geeky enough to probably give you way too many vague answers and contradictory directions. (On second thought, maybe don't come. ... No, we're kidding; DO come, okay?)

Please join us!

-= The Skinny =-

WHAT? Joomla! Open! House! WHEN? March 14th, 2013 -- 5:45 p.m. to 8-ish / maybe 8:30 / or, like, whenever. WHERE? At Backstage (3702 SE Hawthorne -- just behind the Bagdad Theater in SE PDX). HOW? Oh, you mean how much? It's FREE!! WHY? Because Joomla rocks and all other CMSs are laughably inferior.

Remote Tech Talk at the Guild -- Intro to Game Design in JavaScript
PDX Code Guild

With the HTML5 canvas API, web developers have the ability to draw and animate in 2D using JavaScript. And from there, it just takes a bit of structure to design a simple game.

In this Tech Talk, we will use a rudimentary game engine to design a 2D Platformer in Vanilla JavaScript. We will focus on these game design concepts: - Collision Detection & Resolution - Object-Oriented Programming and Inheritance - Trigonometric Functions for Smooth Animations - State Machines - Events - And More

We will also discuss the many differences (and some similarities) between game design and web development.

This Tech Talk is for programmers and gamers of all levels of experience. A basic understanding of JavaScript and the canvas API will help attendees follow along. Refer to this guide for an intro to drawing with canvas: https://github.com/pjz987/guides/blob/master/docs/canvas-tutorial.md

Hack + Help: Learning Cohort Night
PDX Code Guild at NedSpace on 5th

About the event:

Hack + Help is planning ongoing learning cohorts for those who want to learn a new skill with the increased accountability and mutual support of a class, without all the lectures and cost.

The plan is for members to choose a new topic every few months (for example, Python, or Backbone, or databases) and form a cohort that wants to work together to learn more about it. This could be through a MOOC, online tutorials, code challenges, or something else entirely.

Learning a new skill in isolation is challenging, so if you have a topic you'd like to learn more about, come meet with us on January 28th to help us build a new cohort!

PDX Sass - Rachel Nabors and Animation Power Techniques
Puppet

Award winning cartoonist turned front-end developer Rachel Nabors will change how you think about web design forever.

Learn how to make CSS do backflips to reproduce traditional animation techniques like walk cycles, scene transitions, and parallax.

Save time and energy with conservative techniques like cut outs, pioneered by Japanese studios to accelerate the animation process.

Understand the physics behind timing functions like ease-in to create subtle skeuomorphism. CSS animations and transitions are powerful new tools in the interactive design arsenal.

PHPDX - Laravel and Vue.js
Vacasa

Food, learning and a great time to network with the fabulous PHP Community! This month Kurtis Holsapple will be showing us how to Laravel and Vue.js work together.

Kurtis is a developer here in Portland, OR who loves making things work, which is why he loves both Laravel and Vue.JS. Laravel is the most starred full stack framework on Github (54k stars at the time of writing) and it comes out of the box bootstrapped and ready to go with Vue.js. Because Laravel a server side framework, you have everything you need to get started writing an amazing web application out of the box. Because Vue.js is amazing, the Laravel community has adopted this frontend framework to make your life easier whenever you need to use Javascript. If you're curious about how well Vue can integrate with other tooling, this talk is for you! Evan You, the creator of Vue.js, has talked at the last three years of Laracon US.

We'll talk about how you can use VueJS with Laravel, the tooling around modern PHP (composer, PHPUnit, etc), Laravel Mix (the Webpack configuration ready to go with Laravel) and more. Join us for a night of fun code examples and more!

This is a companion talk focused more on the Laravel/PHP side of things. Join us at the Portland Vue.js meetup to continue this talk, but that one will focus more on the Vue side of things. https://www.meetup.com/Portland-Vue-js-Meetup/events/262453723/

PHPDX - Monthly Meetup: TDD with Laravel
WeWork

Join us for a night of live coding, walking through some of the testing features that come out of the box with Laravel. See how we can go from a brand new project to a simple app with a code coverage report. If you are new to Laravel, TDD, or testing in general, you'll not want to miss this talk. While some of this code will be Laravel specific (there's so much included to help make PHP Unit even better than it already is) general testing practices will be discussed. Who: Kurtis Holsapple is a Portland based software engineer, and loves Laravel. He's been writing PHP (and more) for over 15 years.

This month we are trying out a new event space, be sure to RSVP and arrive with photo ID so that you can check in!
