CAT BarCamp is a free unconference hosted by the Computer Action Team at Portland State University every year. BarCamps are free conferences where the people who show up on the day of decide what the conference is about. No scheduled talks are planned beforehand by the organizers, making the range of talks and topics covered each year entirely unique. Timeslots are posted in an accessible place and the attendants are given (fairly) free reign to post and choose which talks they would like to attend or give. We only ask that topics be respectful and PG-rated. The CAT at PSU is an ops training organization that has secured the venue and is organizing the event. We expect many job-hungry students skilled in development, computer science, operations, and everything else to be in attendance at this event and we want to enable as many connections as possible. Because the CAT is a tech organization and has ties to the larger tech community, many speakers will likely give tech-oriented talks.

Non-Expert Automation Testing (NEAT) is an automation testing framework that enables non-experts to harness the power of data-driven, Selenium automation tests. The NEAT web portal simplifies and guides the creation of otherwise complex scripts through the use of an intuitive user interface that manages a web element object repository, test case input data, and test scripts. This approach is intended to enable test script automation to be completed in hours or days instead of weeks or months. The motivation behind NEAT is to equip business analysts, without automation expertise, with an intuitive tool to create and execute sophisticated, automated end-to-end testing scripts. This framework enables teams to increase automated test coverage and allows the highly skilled automation developers to focus on more complex automation testing needs of the organization.

About Our Speaker: Loren J. Brown is a Test Automation Architect and owner of Quantum Peg, Inc. He is currently teaming up with John Cvetko from TEK Associates to develop the DEAP testing tool. After obtaining a Bachelor’s in Computer Science at Portland State University, Loren worked for over two decades as a QA Engineer in various capacities. At Intel Corporation he spent a little over a dozen years in various product teams and Intel Labs as a QA Lead in various software projects including Video Conferencing, IP Telephony, TCP/IP Network Performance, and others. The majority of automation projects fail, most within the first 6-12 months. Initially it’s easy to put something together that works for a small number of test cases, but as the application evolves, the troubleshooting/maintenance needs of the tests quickly overcome the ability of the team. Eventually (around 6-12 months) a new engineer takes over and restarts the automation effort in a new direction, often with the same issues.

This presentation will be focused on how to use the OOP concept of Abstraction to reduce the maintenance costs of automation and extend the life of your frameworks. Additional benefits will be discussed, like the ability to change the Automation Technology without rebuilding all your tests.

These concepts will work with 3rd party automation products like QTP as well as homegrown frameworks. You will get the most value from abstraction when its added at the beginning of the projects, but we will discuss how they can be leverages in larger, existing frameworks. Level: Intermediate. Knowledge of automation concepts along with some basic understanding of development practices will be assumed.

All code examples will be shown in C#, but the concepts will apply to any tool or language.

Dialogue is a contraction from the Greek words for through and words. It suggests an activity aimed at eliciting meaning…

The Greeks introduced the idea that individuals are not intelligent on their own, that it's only by reasoning together that they are able to uncover the truth for themselves. …By questioning and probing each other, carefully dissecting and analyzing ideas, finding the inconsistencies, never attacking or insulting but always searching for what they can accept between them, they can gradually attain deeper understanding and insight.

The role of QA is often seen as one that only reports negatively on the work of others: “…found a bug with your code”; “…the way you designed this isn’t good for the end user”; “…You never include requirements in your stories…and when you do, they lack sufficient details.”

The importance of True Dialogue is that it allows positive reactions and outcomes, from negative input…when done well, the benefits can be extraordinary!

About our speaker: Joe Famme is a Quality Minded individual, who’s been helping to improve the quality of his teams, and the software they work on, for over 20 years. He started in phone support with WordPerfect, in the early nineties. After about a year and a half of that…and the release of Windows 3.0…he discovered the world of QA, and has never looked back.

Besides WordPerfect, Joe’s also worked for internationally known companies Novell, Corel, Intel, and Sage.

Joe’s been working in the Portland Tech Community since 1996. He’s been part of several strong Oregon Companies and several startup companies, .com’s & .bomb’s. And, Joe’s been part of the SQAUG organization since before it became a public group.

In all of his years of being part of the Quality Assurance field, he has found that the quest for the mastery of effective communication and true dialogue has been a key element to success. And, he hopes that some of the dialogue during his presentation provides at least one insight for all attendees to take back to their teams.

Scott is also one of the keynote speakers for the PNSQC’s October events and will be tailoring his presentation specifically for SQAUG!

About our speaker: Scott Poole is most well known as the “House Poet” on the weekly Live Wire! public radio variety show, taped in Portland and broadcast nationally by Public Radio International. However, he is also a software developer. Currently, he’s the Senior Web Developer for Columbia United Providers in Vancouver, WA. He’s been writing code for 9 years and poetry for 25. How Does the Internet Work?

Frontend, Backend, DevOps! Server-side rendering! SSL and HTTPS and SQL injection?! What the heck does all this jargon actually mean? If you're in a leadership position and you need to fill a tech role, it can be hard to know up from down. If your software engineer tells you to pay for an expensive service "for security reasons", how do you know whether its worth your money?

In this workshop, we'll answer the question "how does the internet work" from a Helicopter's perspective. You don't need any programming skills to attend, but be sure to come with questions! By the end, you'll understand the following concepts and how they fit together:

SecViz.org is a great resource for security visualizations, but most suffer from a lack of interactivity. Completing kinectasploit for DEFCON19 made me realize the utility of game engines for interacting with security tools and security information. Jeff will start with a recap/encore performance of kinectasploit (http://p0wnlabs.com/defcon19), which uses gestures to drive a first-person shooter 3D game environment to break into computers on victim virtual machines. Then using the same technology, Jeff will walk through a couple scenes using standard corporate security data in a 3D, kinect-driven environment made possible by the blender game engine.

Kinect and gestures are two of the most prevalent game-changing technologies to affect user interfaces since the keyboard and mouse. Applying these tools to real-world data is challenging, fraught with pitfalls, and a heck of a lot of fun! Let’s discover the boundaries of current technology by pushing it until it fails!

Vagrant is free and open-source software for creating and configuring virtual development environments. Packer is a tool for creating identical machine images for multiple platforms from a single source configuration.

Application Delivery at PGE currently uses both waterfall and iterative work management methodologies. PGE’s IT uses these to support six internal lines of business with their project and production support needs. PGE started the agile journey in 2009 in aid of a large scale multi-project initiative to roll-out network read meters for our customers. Over the subsequent three and half years, that experience was extended into where PGE’s IT delivery is today. Scaling to the enterprise required the synthesis of many different viewpoints, overcoming the deficiencies of agile training as applied in larger circumstances, and fabricating new processes and tools to enhance and manage the value of delivery. During this talk Mark will share highlights of what was valuable, what was a struggle, what he would do the same if starting over, and what he would do differently.

Bio: Mark Menger is a passionate leader in the adoption of Scrum at Portland General Electric, believing strongly in the underpinning concepts of servant leadership and self-organization. He led four Scrum teams and the enterprise architecture function of PGE’s multi-million dollar Automated Metering Infrastructure initiative. As the supervisor of Application Delivery Services, he is currently scaling PGE’s adoption of Agile software delivery to 14 teams across six business client functions. This effort includes business client relationship development, and improvements in quality assurance and engineering practices. When he’s not rooting for the Timbers, the remainder of his attention is focused on Sailflow reports for the Columbia and Willamette rivers.

Scrum Must Die: Many teams over the last decade have moved to Agile Scrum development, but many have missed the key point of doing the adoption-Scrum and it's rituals are merely training-wheels for building a lasting Agile culture. Russ McRee is the principal security group program manager of the Blue Team for Microsoft’s Windows & Devices Group. He writes toolsmith, a monthly column for information security practitioners, and has written for other publications including Information Security, (IN)SECURE, SysAdmin, and Linux Magazine. Russ has spoken at events such as DEFCON, Derby Con, BlueHat, Black Hat, SANSFIRE, RSA, and is a SANS Internet Storm Center handler. He serves as a joint forces operator and planner on behalf of Washington Military Department’s cyber and emergency management missions. Russ advocates for a holistic approach to the practice of information assurance as represented by holisticinfosec.org.

Ousama Lakhdar-Ghazal is currently the technology risk officer for Umpqua Bank, managing risk and coordinating risk coverage for technology. Prior to joining Umpqua, Ousama was a compliance manager for Nike Inc., and prior to that a manager at Deloitte in their Cyber Risk Services group.

Agile PDX presents Max Guernsey, "Test-Driven Database Development"

As developers, we've created heuristics that help us build robust systems and employed test-driven development (TDD) to improve code design and counter instability. Yet object-oriented development principles and TDD have failed to gain traction in the database world. That’s because database development involves an additional driving force—the data.

Max Guernsey shows how to treat databases as objects with classes of their own—rather than as containers of objects—and how to drive database designs from tests. He illustrates a way to give these database classes the ability to upgrade old data without introducing undue risk. Max also shares how to apply good object-oriented design principles to database classes and how to enforce semantic connections between databases and clients. Max demonstrates how it all works together, ensuring that your production databases work exactly the same as test databases, minimizing the risk of design changes, and enabling client applications to more easily keep up with database changes.

Speaker Bio Max Guernsey is currently a Managing Member at Hexagon Software LLC. He has 15 years of experience as a professional software developer. For nearly half that time, he has been blogging, writing, and delivering lectures on the topic of agile and test-driven database development. For much of Max’s professional career, he has been a consultant, advising a variety of software companies in many different industries using multiple programming and database technologies. In most of these engagements, he spent months or even years helping teams implement cutting-edge techniques such as test-driven development, object-oriented design, acceptance-test-driven development, and agile planning.

Max has always been a “hands-on” consultant, working with teams for long periods of time to help them build both software and skills. This series of diverse, yet deep, engagements helped him gain a unique understanding of the database-related testing and design problems that impede most agile teams. Since 2005, he has been thinking, writing, blogging, lecturing, and creating developer-facing software dedicated to resolving these issues.

What do a 17th century painter’s workshop, an international photographic cooperative, and an early 20th century design house have in common with a modern software development team? On the surface it may not seem like much, but bringing a group of makers together to work presents special challenges and opportunities, regardless of field.

In this session we’ll explore what worked, and didn’t, for several groups of historical makers. We’ll draw parallels with agile software development teams, and discuss coaching strategies around the examples provided.

Nathaniel Cadwell has over thirteen years of strategic consulting experience in software development, Agile enablement, and change management, helping organizations achieve dramatic improvement in the efficiency of their software delivery. In his current role, Nathaniel is an Agile Coach working closely with software development teams. He has presented, or co-presented, sessions on Agile coaching, Agile portfolio management, and facilitation skills at multiple venues in the United States and abroad.

Vern Hart (Director of Delivery at Solinea) will cover the landscape of training options available, as well providing a roundup of the best sources of OpenStack information out there. He'll also give some guidance on interacting with the community and how best to leverage the knowledge of the thousands of brilliant developers available via mailing list or IRC.

Vern Hart is the Director of Delivery at Solinea. He is a proven consultant specializing in open infrastructure and helping customers adopting new infrastructure architectures and solutions. Vern has over 20 years of systems administration experience. Prior to Solinea, He was CTO at three separate companies including his own which eventually merged with their largest competitor. Most recently Vern was Director of Support Operations and Training at Morphlabs where he was instrumental in the migration of Morphlabs onto OpenStack from Eucalyptus. He has proven success in both systems development and engineering roles.

Michael Stahnke of Puppet Labs will give a presentation on "Packaging". He'll talk about the correct way to create custom packages of software and incorporate them into your devops workflow so you can more effectively isolate changes and improve the repeatability of your configurations.

Igal Koshevoy will present "A Barbarian's Guide to Avoiding Packaging", a short talk on abusing your configuration system. Although not "correct", this approach can save time, simplify workflow, and minimize infrastructure needed compared to building custom packages in certain cases.

Luckily, I have the support of my wife and partner and together we've worked through many challenges in our lives together, as a team. Through relentless support and sometimes brute force, we've navigated bumps in the road and found balance by getting more comfortable with ambiguity and risk. Lauren Overton: Started her career with Moss Adams in 2013. Her client experience ranges over various industries with a focus in manufacturing and distribution, construction, and healthcare in both the private and public sectors. Lauren’s favorite part of her job is the ability to gain an understanding of how different companies operate; whether that be discussing future projections with the CFO or reviewing a control process with a staff accountant. Outside of the normal work week, Lauren enjoys taking advantage of the Portland “foodie scene”, fostering rescue animals, spoiling her own pooch and going to see live music with her husband.

Taylor Schimbke joined public accounting in 2014 and provides accounting, auditing, and consulting services to a wide variety of clients, with a passionate focus in the construction, forest products, and distribution industries. Recently, Taylor undertook a job rotation with the IT Assurance group at Moss Adams and is primarily focused on IT SOX compliance. She is helping to lead the firm’s initiative to develop skilled IT auditors and encourage collaboration and synergy across the assurance practice. In her free time, Taylor is a novice gardener and loves spending time outdoors with her golden retriever, Kobe.

Zefren Edior is alumni of California State University Polytechnic Institute of Pomona, and he volunteers and spends time engaging youth in technology training and awareness, and engages HS and collegiate students through technology competitions and general outreach on professional development. What does the actual health reform plan look like, what happens when 30 million new people enter the “system” as we know it, and what will it all mean for your organization? “Obamacare” has survived the Supreme Court, but the health reform law itself may be overshadowed by larger shifts in market power - and continuing government budget crises, as lawmakers target Medicare and Medicaid as sources of major savings. This session provides a critical overview of where health care stands today; the latest on spending trends and market dynamics; and how the health reform plan will play out for all major stakeholders, including providers, payers, employers, patients and consumers. This session examines the concurrent effects of the reform plan, health insurance market upheavals, increasing patient economic empowerment, and emerging information technologies on today’s health care organization. J.D.Kleinke has been instrumental in the creation of four health care information organizations, most notably HealthGrades. He has helped hospital systems, insurers and physician groups prepare for medical computerization and health reform; provided business, product and technology strategy services to new and established health care companies; and sat on the Boards of several public and privately held health information companies. In 2012, he was a Resident Fellow of the American Enterprise Institute. Mr. Kleinke has authored three books on the U.S. health care system, Bleeding Edge: The Business of Health Care in the New Century and Oxymorons: The Myth of a U.S. Health Care System, and Catching Babies (2011). His work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Barron’s, Health Affairs, JAMA, the British Medical Journal, Modern Healthcare, Managed Healthcare, Forbes, and numerous other publications. He mastered methods for determining objective probabilities with the best strategies for success in transactions and disputes needed in the information economy. But this was not enough. About the Speaker
Martin Medeiros began his career supporting SABRE Technology Group for American Airlines' flight reservation system. After obtaining his law degree he was recognized by his client, Ryder, with the RISE Award for information systems excellence. As a negotiation leader in thousands of deals and disputes over the last 25 years, information technology remains his passion. Martin authored three books on influence, persuasion, negotiation and technology.

In this presentation, TAO President and CEO, Skip Newberry, will delve into the trends, companies and sub-sectors to watch, providing insight into the relative health of the region's tech ecosystem.

Speaker Biography
Skip is a frequent speaker on technology trends and topics, economic development, public-private partnerships and civic innovation. Before joining the TAO, Skip served as an economic development policy advisor to Portland Mayor Sam Adams, where he helped create Portland’s first comprehensive economic development strategy in 16 years, recognizing software as a key industry cluster. While at the City of Portland, Skip’s projects included the adoption of the nation’s first open source software procurement policy at the municipal level, an award-winning regional open data initiative and the development of resources to support entrepreneurship, like the Portland Seed Fund. Previously, Skip was a corporate and IP attorney and entrepreneur. Skip is Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors of TECNA, Technology Councils of North America, which is a global network of technology and entrepreneurship associations, and he serves on the community advisory board for Wells Fargo and several community-based organizations in the Portland area. Skip is also a 2012 recipient of the Portland Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 award. SIM-Portland February Meeting - "IT and Ethics: What does it mean for you and your organization"

What are ethics and why are they relevant in the IT field? Why is a code of ethics important to us personally and to our organizations? How do you develop and maintain an ethical code for the use of Information Technology in an organization? These are just some of the questions we will consider at the next SIM Portland meeting. Everyone is familiar with the concept of medical ethics and the Hippocratic Oath, “First do no harm.” Ethics are a set of mutually agreed upon rules that encompass the personal and shared standards of behavior expected by a group of people, typically within a given profession. There are now ethical investments and mutual funds that hold to certain principles when selecting companies to invest in.

Information Technology is advancing at an ever increasing rate, and is having an increasing impact on our lives. The recent Facebook / Cambridge Analytica scandal demonstrated what can happen in organizations when there is no ethical grounding, and decisions are simply left up to the bottom line, or market forces. Join host, and incoming SIM-Portland President, Richard Appleyard for the February Chapter meeting where he will share his ideas and facilitate discussion around embracing more formal ethical standards with in the IT management profession. He is currently the Deputy CIO and Applications Development Manager at the Oregon Secretary of State. In addition to assisting the CIO, he is responsible for software development team that manages a portfolio of applications for the different SOS divisions; Elections, Corporation, Audits and Archives as well as Business Services. He is the President-elect for the Society of Information Management Portland Chapter and currently planning his agenda for his April 2020-2022 tenure.

Richard is an emerging Technology Ethicist and IT Futurist with a passion for being more thoughtful with how IT is implemented. He is a proponent of Holistic Technology Management that looks for the potential "butterfly effect,” and the unseen opportunities and unintended consequences of today's technology advances. Richard has a Bachelors in Chemistry from the University of Oxford, a PhD in Biochemistry / Biophysics from Washington State University and completed a Post-doctorate in Medical Informatics (Information and Data Science) at Oregon Health and Science University where he focused on Consumer Health Informatics and the usability of patient information systems.

This highly interactive, instructor-led simulation is a high-impact, energetic way to accelerate understanding, involvement, and acceptance of DevOps and Agile, Lean, ITIL® best practice in your organization. It helps accelerate the adoption of DevOps across the enterprise, while successfully turning DevOps opponents into advocates. By helping to clearly communicate the DevOps case for change, it creates shared understanding and commitment towards Development and Operations working together as a high-performing team. This unique experiential learning approach causes breakthrough understanding and transforms learning into an engaging, fun, and memorable shared experience.

HOW IT WORKS

The DevOps simulation experience is a role-based workshop, focused on the software development and deployment lifecycle. The simulation is highly realistic, and leverages game dynamics to empower cross-functional teams with a shared vision of successful DevOps practices. Participants from a variety of disciplines are immersed into a simulated environment whereby they are challenged to release new products while internal and external forces continually change. This realistic approach delivers a level of tension and excitement that creates an ‘A-HA!’ moment for all involved.

Advancements in emerging technologies have accelerated significantly with the reality of automated intelligence (AI), robotics and now Blockchain technologies. Only a few years ago, companies were wrestling with the emergence of social media and integration of mobile strategies for retail. Fast forward and mobile delivery with social presence is now the norm, and retail is fundamentally digital. The next wave of emerging technologies promise bigger shifts than the last wave; however several of these technologies will need to move beyond proof of concept use cases for companies to successfully embrace.
