Cyber Security Literacy For Entrepreneurs: What You Need To Know
Union Bank

Built Oregon, the digital magazine that brings awareness to entrepreneurs & companies throughout the diverse regions of our state through inspirational storytelling, events, and podcasts, and our Presenting Sponsor Union Bank, hosts "Cyber Security For Entrepreneurs: What You Need To Know"

Overview

Over the last few years we have seen cybersecurity move from the realm of IT to the center stage. With mega breaches impacting every industry from retail, healthcare and government, institutions and businesses of all stripes and sizes are continuously under attack by increasingly sophisticated and well funded adversaries from around the world.

In this panel we will discuss what businesses should be aware of when it comes to cybersecurity, and what they can do to mitigate risk associated with cybercrime. We will highlight issues around:

  • Data collection as a resource and liability
  • Challenges securing remote workers, and IT systems built and used without company approval or knowledge (known as "shadow IT")
  • Understanding your attack surface (the aggregate of all known, unknown and potential vulnerabilities and controls) both in the office and in the cloud
  • Securing payments and preventing fraud
  • You’ve been breached…what happens now?

Build Your Incident Response Framework
Technology Association of Oregon

Don't be a target - create a do-it-yourself plan instead...

If you use technology in your day to day operations (and who doesn't), join us on the morning of Wednesday, April 6th for its first of four events on mitigating the risks of business impacts through cybersecurity. Network with peers, learn from subject matter experts and walk away with the foundation for an incident response framework for yourself and your organization.

Our four-part series will include: -alignment to the NIST Cybersecurity Framework -guidance from Cybersecurity subject matter experts - representing both private and public sectors -individual support for customizing an incident response framework for you/your organization -connectivity to peers in a safe environment for building a scalable plan that will positively impact your entire organization

This event is the kickoff to a four-part series hosted by the Tech Leadership Community around the topic of Cybersecurity. Each event will provide building blocks to help guide a do-it-yourself incident response framework for your team and entire organization. Whether you attend one event by yourself, bring your peers to the entire series, or any other combination, the subject matter experts selected for each event will provide individual guidance on the final framework for you/your company.

Our first event will focus on scalable incident response with guidance from the following leads:

Data Privacy PDX - Data Privacy for Activists (Encore)
SEIU Local 503

ENCORE WORKSHOP - For those of you who couldn't make the first workshop, here is your chance.  We will be doing this at a new location and time to make it available to more people.

Data privacy is important to everyone, but is felt even more keenly by those who advocate for causes.  Here in Portland, everyone has something they are passionate about, and we often spend our time and energy supporting a good cause.  With privacy concerns being very real for many participants in these causes, organizers must be prepared to provide better privacy protections for the communications and data that are related to their efforts.

This workshop is to introduce foundational data privacy strategies and teach easy solutions for helping activists protect the privacy of those they engage with and themselves.

Greg Stromire will be hosting the workshop.  Topics will include:

• Environment For Privacy:  Why is Privacy Essential;  Privacy, Security, & Anonymity;  Privacy Law

•  Privacy for Communications:  Messaging;  Email;  Voice

• Securing Your Devices:  Mobile Devices;  Personal Computers

• Protected Internet Use:  HTTPS;  Using VPNs;  Best Practices Online

• Data Storage for Private Data:  Encrypted Portable Devices;  Cloud Storage;  Individual Files

This special 2-hour Data Privacy PDX workshop is free to attend and light refreshments will be provided.

Name Tags - We will provide name tags because it helps people feel more comfortable striking up conversations, but please feel free to use your online handle, first name only, or skip the name tag if you are more comfortable.

November 2017 ISACA Luncheon - Security Containerization
KPMG

ISACA Luncheon Event: Security Container Adoption in Enterprise Environments

Across the world, organizations are using containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes as a security boundary without a strong understanding of the underlying design. These technologies are often misconfigured, which can provide attackers with a means to gain a foothold within an organization, elevate privileges, or spread laterally throughout a modern enterprise network. During this presentation, we will analyze common use cases for a containerization environment and demonstrate tools these technologies provide to protect the host from an attacker within the container. We will discuss in detail the common threats facing these environments, as well as technical and administrative controls to detect and protect against attacks on containerization infrastructure.

Speaker: Lucas Rosvar, NCC Group Lucas Rosevear has been a Security Consultant at NCC Group since September, 2015, working from NCC's Seattle, WA office. Through projects at NCC Group, Lucas has performed a range of testing, including: - Network Penetration Testing - Web Application Penetration Testing - Blackbox and Config-assisted Container Reviews - AWS Config Reviews

Prior to NCC Group, Lucas became an OSCP and a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

Automating Security in AWS Cloud
AWS Elemental

AWS customers continue to struggle demonstrating alignment with security, compliance and audit requirements, such as the PCI-DSS. Additionally, many compliance requirements necessitate administrative and operational security controls that lack technical validation.

This workshop is designed to instruct AWS cloud engineers, DevOps team members, security practitioners, and Managed Security Service Providers (MSSP) how to secure and manage regulated customer workloads in AWS. This class will focus on the security of an AWS customer account design (e.g. AWS CIS Foundation Benchmark), security architecture (e.g. AWS CIS 3-Tier Web Benchmark) and security automation leading practices. This workshop is an intermediate to advanced workshop with an emphasis on designing security automation for regulated workloads in AWS (e.g. PCI, DoD, CJIS, HIPAA, DFARs (800-171), FERPA and others).

The result will enable cloud engineers and security practitioners to design, architect and implement automation in an AWS customer account to automatically enforce compliance requirements. It will also enable attendees to document their security governance/audit readiness through integration of AWS Security Partners from our AWS Marketplace and Security Competency Partners and Solutions.

What will I learn in this class?

How to design automation in AWS to enforce security controls and compliance requirements Automate audit findings to accelerate the compliance process Use AWS Partners and Marketplace tools to create more secure and reliable environments Course Objectives:

Establish secure foundational account design and/or remediation of existing customer accounts Configure and manage AWS Security Services with a focus on automation Implement and design security automation services through AWS services and partner solutions Manage, secure and audit the use of AWS services using real-time risk management processes Leverage shared compliance across multiple security frameworks (e.g. PCI, DoD, CJIS, etc.) Learn about and leverage key security partners from the AWS Partner Network (APN) Learn about Container Security, Serverless Architecture, Advanced Encryption, and Auto-Healing in AWS

2018 Spring Training: IT Security and Audit Symposium
through Clackamas Community College - Wilsonville

Spring Training

Day 1:

1) Keynote: Blockchain: More that Cryptocurrency: Michael Reed (Intel)

Presentation on the origin of blockchain technologies and its evolution to a key technology in pursuit of increased efficiencies and new business models. Is your enterprise ready for blockchain?

2) Micro Segmentation and Cloud-A blueprint for protecting your golden egg: Tyler Hardison (RedHawk Security) (EVENT SPONSOR)

3) Benefiting from PCI – Even if Compliance is Not Required: Bowe Hoy (Sword&Shield) and Mike Griffin (Circle K Stores, Inc.)

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) can be beneficial to your organization, even if compliance to it is not a requirement. PCI DSS features a number of valuable guidelines to help your organization improve its security posture, technology auditing, and business operations. This session will help you understand the key components of PCI DSS and how your organization can benefit from implementing it. You will receive practical lessons through case studies about organizations that have successfully implemented PCI DSS. Whether these organizations were required to comply with PCI DSS, or chose to adopt it – they became a better organization because of it. And you can learn how to do the same for your organization.

4) Certificate Security and Frameworks for a Public CA: Derek Thomas and Scott Perry

As the ubiquity of on-line shopping continues to amplify our digital environment, ensuring a trusted on-line transaction becomes critical to building the brand loyalty and experience once relished within the physical brick and mortar retailer. The ability to ensure a trusted and secure transaction is not new, however the scrutiny placed on that trust is at an all time high with significant changes in the issuing community and the scrutiny ensuing from the browser community for secure and reliable trusted certificates.

In this presentation, Scott Perry, Partner and Derek Thomas, Managing Director, of Scott Perry CPA, one of six licensed CPA firms performing Certificate Authority audits, will discuss the changing landscape of on-line transactional trust and the requirements of Certificate Authorities. The presentation will include a discussion and overview of an established but less known framework for evaluating and auditing the performance of Certificate Authority practices and considerations applied to evaluating the security of your on-line transactions.

Day 2: 5 Sessions: Various Presenters

5) Current Economics of Cyber: David Hobbs: Radware

Often we discuss the changing threat landscape from a pure technical or vulnerability picture, however this does an injustice to element of ease, cost and access to attacks. This presentation will provide attendees with an up-to-date picture of the rapidly changing landscape of attack tools and services, the buying criteria and locations for these the tools and ease of use. In addition, the presentation will provide an understanding of how the combination of the proliferation of these tools and their corresponding use has dramatically changed the dynamics of the return on defense strategies. This presentation will provide unique insight into the world of the Darknet, specific customer attack stories, new economic models of measuring security deployments and a refreshed look at how controls should be deployed going forward.

6) Cyber War Chronicles - Stories From the Virtual Trenches (ERT Report 2017): David Hobbs: Radware

From information shared by over 1250 companies on their top concerns, we talk about what happened in 2017 and predict the top trends of 2018 in cyber security. The first half of 2017 saw a continuation of some cyber-security threats, as well as the emergence of some attack types and trends. Ransom attacks, political hacks, and new dynamics around the accessibility and capability of attack tools have added even more challenges to security. This session will explore some of the latest evolutions of the threat landscape, through a combination of market intelligence, real-world case studies, and direct insights from those on the front lines of cyber-security.

7) OWASP Updated Top10: Alex Ivkin (ISACA Board)

A detailed technical review of the OWASP top 10.

8) The Value of Cyber Certifications: Alex Ivkin (ISACA Board)

9) Fraud Audit in a Digital Environment: Sarah Dalton: E&Y

2019 ISACA Spring Training

IT Audit and Security Climate Change: The Risks of Shifting Technologies and a Political Landscape

Advancements in emerging technologies have accelerated significantly with the reality of automated intelligence (AI), robotics and now Blockchain technologies. Only a few years ago, companies were wrestling with the emergence of social media and integration of mobile strategies for retail. Fast forward and mobile delivery with social presence is now the norm, and retail is fundamentally digital. The next wave of emerging technologies promise bigger shifts than the last wave; however several of these technologies will need to move beyond proof of concept use cases for companies to successfully embrace.

Will the political environment be helpful or hurtful to industry and business in 2019? Will cutting edge technologies shift into mainstream reality and create broader adoption beneficial in reigniting the markets? Will employees remain optimistic within a generally low unemployment environment?

Come attend ISACA’s Spring Training Event and find out what industry leaders are thinking and doing to maximize the benefits of emerging technologies amid the shifting quicksand of the political and technology environment.

Hacking a SaaS: A Practical Guide to Understanding Attack and Defense

Hacking a SaaS: A Practical Guide to Understanding Attackers and Defending Against Them

In this talk, we will delve into the mindset of an attacker and explore the vulnerabilities they exploit in SaaS systems. We will cover the following topics:

What motivates hackers to target SaaS systems (5%) How hackers conduct reconnaissance on SaaS systems (50%) The anatomy of exploit chains (40%) Strategies for defending against attacks (5%) Our goal is to provide a practical guide to understanding attackers and defending against them. We will share lots of hacker tips and tricks, and provide plenty of quiz moments to train your intuition. Our focus will be on vulnerabilities that hackers actually care about, rather than theoretical ones. All of our examples will be based on real-world exploit chains, and we will explore multiple vulnerabilities chained together to create media-news-headline-worthy outcomes. By the end of this talk, you will have a better understanding of how attackers think and operate, and you will be better equipped to defend against their attacks.

Our January host and sponsor is Solutional Inc, and the talk will take place in their Portland office at 301 SE 2nd Ave.

Please RSVP here if you are planning to attend.

This is a monthly event of OWASP's Portland chapter.
