FridayMay 31 2019Tech Academy Portland Meetup - Intro to Small Basic: A Free Coding Class at The Tech Academy
We run a code school. We hear from a lot of people we talk to that they're not sure whether they're interested in a job in the tech field, because they don't know enough about it. Sometimes, they've even been told that "programming is hard to learn."
At The Tech Academy, we work hard to break down the barriers between people and technology. We think that, with the right approach, anyone can learn to code - and whether you end up working in technology or not, the principles behind coding are useful in a lot of areas.
The Tech Academy is offering a free course on Introduction to Small Basic. Small Basic is a Microsoft language that gives users exposure to many of the fundamental skills used in more complex coding languages.
This course is perfect for people with little to no experience in programming who are curious about a career in software development.
In this practical, hands-on class, you'll learn the basics of these popular technologies - and along the way, you should find out for yourself whether technology and coding are something worth looking into a bit more deeply.
Please Note:
---Make sure to bring your laptop, as this will be a hands on learning process where you get to actually write your own code. If you don't have a laptop, no worries, you will be able to use one of ours.
---An RSVP is needed to guarantee a seat in the class, though we may have a few open seats for last minute attendees. -

The Tech Academy is offering a free course providing an introduction to Python. Python is a popular programming language for general-purpose programming. It is particularly easy to learn for those new to coding.
This course is perfect for people with little to no experience in programming who are curious about a career in software development.
In this practical, hands-on class, you'll learn the basics of this popular computer language - and along the way, you should find out for yourself whether technology and coding are something worth looking into a bit more deeply.

FridayApr 12 2019Tech Academy Portland Meetup - Tech Talk: What's in the Box? A guided tour of a modern web application
Guest Speaker: Erik Gross, Co-founder of The Tech Academy
Today's modern web development tools give you a ton of code right out of the gate, making rapid application development possible. But it can be a challenge to understand what each part of your new, auto-generated app does, and how to modify the app as you make it solve the business need that drove its creation in the first place.
In this Tech Talk, Tech Academy co-founder Erik Gross will go over the essential principles of all web application frameworks, and then review how Microsoft's ASP.NET MVC implements those principles. You'll leave with a greater understanding of web app frameworks, how MVC works and how to modify it, and an approach to analyzing any pre-built framework you use in the future.

FridayApr 5 2019Tech Academy Portland Meetup - Intro to Python: A Free Coding Class at The Tech Academy

At The Tech Academy, we work hard to break down the barriers between people and technology. We think that, with the right approach, anyone can learn to code - and whether you end up working in technology or not, the principles behind coding are useful in a lot of areas.
The Tech Academy is offering a free course on Introduction to Web design with HTML & CSS. These languages are used to develop the structure and styling of every website.

TuesdayJan 22 2019Tech Academy Portland Meetup - Intro to Small Basic: A Free Coding Class at The Tech Academy

WednesdayDec 19 2018Peer mentoring & discussions: Chapter 5 & "Sorry ARIMA, but I’m Going Bayesian"
We're back to our discussion format so there will be no presentation this month.
Our topics will be:
1) Chapter 5 of "Bayesian Methods for Hackers" https://github.com/CamDavidsonPilon/Probabilistic-Programming-and-Bayesian-Methods-for-Hackers Please take a look at it. It's perfectly OK if you are just starting the book. Come with your questions and we will discuss them.
2) "Sorry ARIMA, but I’m Going Bayesian" https://multithreaded.stitchfix.com/blog/2016/04/21/forget-arima/ I haven't dug in to this post but this is a perfect chance to figure out what the author is trying to say. The code in the article is in R ... why not try to reimplement it in your favorite language.
Note the doors will be locked. Please try to arrive by 6:15 and reach me here or on twitter, @JulioBarros, if you have any questions or need to be let in. Thanks.

WednesdayDec 5 2018Portland Deep Learning discussion topics: 1) privacy and ML and 2) The Fast.AI library
We're back to our discussion format so there will be no presentation this month. Instead be prepared to share your insights and experiences on 1) privacy and ML and 2) The Fast.AI library.
Privacy for ML is a big topic so we'll start by reviewing the PySyft project, paper and tutorials. PySyft is a Python library for secure, private Deep Learning. PySyft decouples private data from model training, using Multi-Party Computation (MPC) within PyTorch. Links to materials are at: https://github.com/OpenMined/PySyft/tree/master/examples/tutorials
Fast.ai is a company dedicated to making the power of deep learning accessible to all. They've done this with their live courses at Unisversity of San Francisco, the corresonding free online MOOC, many free talks and presentations, and a deep learning framework built on top of PyTorch. I've heard many good things about the framework so lets dig into it and discuss it at the meeting. More info at: https://docs.fast.ai

WednesdayNov 14 2018Probabilistic programming from scratch w/ David Molina
This month we'll focus a bit more on the 'programming' part of Probabilisitic Programming. First we'll have:
Probabilistic programming from scratch
Real world observational data is always imperfect or incomplete in some way. Those limitations mean that what we learn from our data is somewhat uncertain. We want to fill in the blanks to the extent possible and be able to say how confident we are as we do this. This is inference. Probabilistic programming makes it easier to learn from data. Let’s see how to build a basic probabilistic programming system from scratch in Python to introduce Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC), which is a specific, extremely simple algorithm to perform Bayesian inference.
Bio: David is a Business Analyst and Software Developer with six years of corporate experience in building databases, managing and analyzing large data sets, and optimizing systems and processes. Machine Learning enthusiast focused on Natural Language Processing (NLP) and visual recognition.
Then we'll introduce and discuss "An Introduction to Probabilistic Programming" https://arxiv.org/abs/1809.10756 and explore some of the concepts we've covered using Pyro http://pyro.ai

WednesdayNov 7 2018Survey of Music Generation using Deep Learning w/ Jonathan Mackrory
== Slack == There is a #deep-learning channel in the PDX Startups slack which you can join at https://pdx-startups-slack.herokuapp.com
== Topic == Jonathan Mackrory will lead the discussion.
Music generation is one of the applications for deep learning where the emphasis is more on creativity than strict classification or regression. We'll have a presentation giving a quick survey of methods for music generation using deep learning. We'll have a whirlwind tour through representations of the music, important neural network architectures, some of the implementations, and hear some of the output. If we're lucky, some of it might even sound like music. We'll then wrap up with some open discussion about the topic.
The presentation will closely follow and be based on "Deep Learning Techniques for Music Generation - A Survey" by Briot, Hadjeres and Pachet. The article is available here: https://arxiv.org/abs/1709.01620 Note that the article is 108 pages, so there is little expectation anyone will read it. For those that want to look at the article, the essential material is in Ch 4,5,7,10.

WednesdayOct 10 2018Wednesday, October 10, 2018 Peer mentoring, NLP presentation and StarSpace Embedding paper review
We'll have a short presentation on deep NLP and review the paper "StarSpace: Embed All The Things!"
The major vendors in cloud-based services are starting to provide machine learning as a service, such as Google Cloud AutoML Natural Language and Azure Language Understanding (LUIS). Jim Tyhurst will give a brief demonstration of IBM Watson Natural Language Classifier service (https://www.ibm.com/watson/services/natural-language-classifier/), which enables you to build a custom classifier with no programming. Just create a new instance and submit training data. When the system has finished training, you can submit a document through a web API. The system responds with JSON, giving a list of some possible categories with a confidence score associated with each category. We will discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages of this service.
StarSpace: Embed All The Things! - describes a general-purpose neural embedding model that can solve a wide variety of problems: labeling tasks such as text classification, ranking tasks such as information retrieval/web search, collaborative filtering-based or content-based recommendation, embedding of multi-relational graphs, and learning word, sentence or document level embeddings. https://arxiv.org/abs/1709.03856
