Join us this Saturday! I really hope to see you there! -Ian p.s. if you want to try out Luz ahead of time, it's super easy: 1) sudo apt-get install bzr ruby1.8 libgtk2-ruby libglade2-ruby libgtkglext1-ruby librmagick-ruby1.8 libcairo-ruby libsdl-ruby1.8 2) bzr branch https://code.launchpad.net/~ian-mcintosh/luz/trunk luz 3) ./luz_editor.rb |

Electrogals 2010 – Disjecta Electrogals 2010 - Call & Response All Women - All Electronic The concert will showcase female electronic music performers from Portland and the West Coast, featuring synthesists, sonic explorers, deep listeners, circuit benders, and beat manglers. The performances will cover a wide range of styles, from beat-heavy song forms to abstract noise-generated soundscapes. Some of the performances will also include the audience, in ways that will definitely surprise and delight - and no, there won't be any embarrassing sing-alongs. Probably. About the Electrogals series Although there is nothing inherently manly about creating or performing electronic music, the female electronic musician is something of a rare bird. Electrogals 2010 will be the fourth in this series of showcases for women who have immersed themselves in this art form. The first Electrogals show happened in 1995 at Mills College in Oakland, when composer Heather Perkins gathered a group of female electronic musicians for a show at the Mills Concert Hall. In 2004, Heather put on another Electrogals concert as part of the Sound/Craft music series at the Portland Museum of Contemporary Craft. In the spring of 2008, Heather Perkins, Mary Wright and Christi Denton put on an Electrogals concert at Holocene, filling both stages with an amazing lineup. All compositions for Electrogals 2010 will be written by Portland composer and performer Heather Perkins, and performed by an all-star roster of female electronic music performers. NOTE: The time isn't listed on the website, it could be inaccurate. |

CHIFOO January Meeting/Speaker – CMD Agency Designing Experience with Sound The Haunted Garden is a sonic environment that participants control by their mere presence. It is a room that listens to the notes in your voice and uses them to compose music and change the color of the room. As the project progressed, further opportunities for control were implemented. An interactive kiosk gives users the ability to choose instruments and control sensitivity and reactivity parameters. The next step was to insert audio from other times and places by playing field recordings (e.g., baby yaks in Tibet, the 8-line in San Francisco), allowing the Haunted Garden to actively respond to the augmented sonic environments. Simran will discuss the challenges of designing with sound, and how he developed “listening agents” who react and comment on sound in the environment. He will relate experiences—both as software developer and sound artist—and explore sound as a medium. Topics will include what is sound sculpture, what challenges were uncovered in creating it, whether the experience worked according to plan, the challenges in developing applications for these sorts of interactions, the unforeseen consequences resulting from initial forays into these kinds of devices, and how an interface based on sound might change how we relate to sound and sonic devices. About the Speaker Simran Gleason is an artist and professional nerd. He started drawing the day after getting a master’s degree in computer science (symbolic and heuristic computation) from Stanford and drifted through many media before arriving at his current focus: making algorithms that make music. Among his more successful installations is Haunted Garden, a room that listens to you, finds the notes in your conversation, and uses them to compose an ambient sound and lightscape. He also did the generative music and light algorithms for SWARM, a gaggle of open source someday-autonomous spherical robots. His work has been shown in galleries in San Francisco and Palo Alto, as well as installations at Maker Fair, Yuri’s Night, Coachella, and the special olympics of art: Burning Man. Kepler’s Orrery is his first iPhone app. |

Music to Your Ears? Brains, Sound, and How to Save Your Hearing – Kiggins Theatre Science on Tap is a science lecture series where you can sit back, enjoy a pint, and laugh while you learn. Listen to experts talk about the science in your neighborhood and around the world. You don’t have to be a science geek to have fun—all you need is a thirst for knowledge! Date: Wednesday, November 12, 2014 Time: Doors at 6 p.m. event at 7 p.m. Location: Kiggins Theatre, 1011 Main Street, Vancouver, Wash. Cost: $8 online advance tickets, $10* suggested cover at the door Food & Drink: Beer, wine, pizza slices, popcorn and snacks available. Event Description Hearing is one of our basic senses – it helps us communicate and to perceive the world around us — but we shouldn’t take it for granted. Approximately 15 percent of Americans between the ages of 20 and 69 (about 26 million Americans) have some kind of noise-induced hearing loss, and much of that loss could have been prevented with a few simple precautions. At this Science on Tap, Dr. Allison Coffin, assistant professor in the neuroscience department at Washington State University Vancouver, will be joined on stage with live musicians and will talk about the mechanical and neurological process of how we hear and how we can protect our ears. Come ready to listen and learn…and maybe dance! Event Website Science on Tap at the Kiggins is produced in partnership with Washington State University Vancouver. *A note on the suggested cover at the door: Science on Tap is supported, in part, by money collected at the door. We are committed to offering educational opportunities to adults who want to learn, so if $10 is a hardship for you, please come anyway and donate what you can. |

eBay Tech Tuesday: The Impact of Technology on the Music Industry – eBay Community Lounge For the February edition of eBay Tech Tuesdays we'll be bringing in some of the fine folks over at Marmoset, a boutique music agency here in Portland, to talk music and technology. Ryan Wines, Managing Partner and CEO; Shane Geiger, Digital Team Lead; and Ryan Rebo, Developer, will be talking about their website and app, sharing their thoughts on how technology has changed their business so far, what they're seeing currently, what they foresee coming down the road, and what unknowns have them scratching their heads. Marmoset also has a super secret band coming in from out of state to play. So secret we're not even allowed to know who they are... But this is what we've been told: • Instrumental electronic pop that borrows from the playbook of Justice and Daft Punk, at least in terms of mystique • One could say that they sound like an ’80s synth-rock band, but it goes deeper than that. They have a fanatic following from the people who have listened and seen them live. The way they present themselves is a sincere approach to combine art and music. And we've been guaranteed they're rad. RSVP now to attend, then check out Marmoset to learn more about who they are and what they do. eBay Tech Tuesdays: "Music + Tech + Accessibility = Love" – eBay Community Lounge October's Tech Tuesday will be incorporating three of our favorite things: music, tech, and accessibility, into one evening – and we are so excited. October's Tech Tuesday will be incorporating three of my favorite things: music, tech, and accessibility, into one evening – and we are so excited! We recently had the pleasure of being introduced to Myles de Bastion, Founder and Executive Director of CymaSpace. CymaSpace is a non-profit technology incubator and performance venue in SE Portland that’s using cymatic technology to do some very cool stuff with the performing arts and accessibility. Cymatics is the science of wave phenomena (especially sound wave phenomena) and their visual and tactile representations. We found Myles to be incredibly inspiring and motivational, and were absolutely thrilled when he agreed to participate in this month’s Meetup. He’ll be sharing his personal experience with hearing impairment, the motivations and passions behind CymaSpace, and the technologies being developed there. There will be demos of CymaSpace’s hardware and software technologies during Myles’ presentation. The demos will include an acoustic singer/songwriter performing original songs, accompanied by a Certified Deaf Interpreter performing interpretive ASL, and a musical duo playing various instruments to demonstrate a full range of sonic frequencies translated into light. If we’re lucky, there will be some other cool demo surprises as well. This event is all-ages and with ASL interpreters for both the verbal presentation and demos, it is designed to be fully accessible to the Deaf community. As always, our Meetup is open to the public, so please spread the word. As usual, doors open at 5:45pm and the presentation starts at 6:30pm. We expect this one will run a little longer than usual, though, ending closer to 8:15ish. More about CymaSpace: CymaSpace’s mission is to make the performing arts more accessible and inclusive to Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities by supporting research and development of new and emerging cymatic technology, hosting workshops and forums, and supporting an in-house team of tech innovators. CymaSpace also presents live performing arts events enhanced by specialized equipment and installations which translate audio information into sight (light) and touch (vibration). RSVP now and we'll see you on the 27th! |

Survey of Music Generation using Deep Learning w/ Jonathan Mackrory – The Tech Academy == Slack == There is a #deep-learning channel in the PDX Startups slack which you can join at https://pdx-startups-slack.herokuapp.com == Topic == Jonathan Mackrory will lead the discussion. Music generation is one of the applications for deep learning where the emphasis is more on creativity than strict classification or regression. We'll have a presentation giving a quick survey of methods for music generation using deep learning. We'll have a whirlwind tour through representations of the music, important neural network architectures, some of the implementations, and hear some of the output. If we're lucky, some of it might even sound like music. We'll then wrap up with some open discussion about the topic. The presentation will closely follow and be based on "Deep Learning Techniques for Music Generation - A Survey" by Briot, Hadjeres and Pachet. The article is available here: https://arxiv.org/abs/1709.01620 Note that the article is 108 pages, so there is little expectation anyone will read it. For those that want to look at the article, the essential material is in Ch 4,5,7,10. |

Designing with Sound | Amber Case (live!) – TBA (North Portland) We're re-booting UX Book Club in the new year with something a little different! Questions and discussion included. Doors at 6:30. Presentation at 7:00 Pre-order a hard copy of the book at Amazon (release date is Dec. 13): https://www.amazon.com/_/dp/1491961104 Or read on O'Reilly's online learning platform, Safari: http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920051923.do About the book: Sound can profoundly impact how people interact with your product. Well-designed sounds can be exceptionally effective in conveying subtle distinctions, emotion, urgency, and information without adding visual clutter. In this practical guide, Amber Case and Aaron Day explain why sound design is critical to the success of products, environments, and experiences. Just as visual designers have a set of benchmarks and a design language to guide their work, this book provides a toolkit for the auditory experience, improving collaboration for a wide variety of stakeholders, from product developers to composers, user experience designers to architects. You’ll learn a complete process for designing, prototyping, and testing sound. In two parts, this guide includes: ・Past, present, and upcoming advances in sound design ・Principles for designing quieter products ・Guidelines for intelligently adding and removing sound in interactions ・When to use voice interfaces, how to consider personalities, and how to ・build a knowledge map of queries ・Working with brands to create unique and effective audio logos that will ・speak to your customers ・Adding information using sonification and generative audio About the authors: Amber Case studies the interaction between humans and computers and how our relationship with information is changing the way cultures think, act, and understand their worlds. Case has spoken, performed and written about the future of sound design at conferences and events around the world. Case is also the author of Calm Technology (O'Reilly, 2015). She lives in Portland, Oregon and online @caseorganic. Aaron Day (who will not be in attendance) has been designing sound experiences and interfaces since 1998. Dorkbot Workshop: Linux Audio and Music Making – CTRL-H Hackerspace Interested in making music on Linux? Ever wanted to customize your own interface and workflow in your music making? Use your phone to do some mobile EQ-ing a venue, or completely repurpose a midi controller? In this introductory workshop, we will explore different ways of interfacing with Linux-based audio applications in order to optimize modularity/customizability in an accessible fashion - this class is open to all levels, even if you are brand new to Linux! I will demonstrate how users can use OSC (Open Sound Control, an alternative and complement to MIDI) to communicate between different programs such as Sooperlooper, Puredata (PD), Ardour, etc. We will utilize open-stage-control to play with how you can make your own GUI in an easy way. We will also glimpse at integrating some modules from automatonism in PD, which should feel familiar for synth lovers. I recommend installing and playing around with automatonism in PD (or another flavor of PD such as purrdata ) if you get the chance beforehand! A Raspberry Pi or Linux laptop will be sufficient for this class, but you will probably want to use a usb sound card or an audio hat unless youdon't mind lots of cracks and pops! We will try to have as many computers available as we can on hand. |
