Self Balancing Robots 101
Glenn Phillips
Glenn Phillips got into the computer business around the era of the Mac Plus. Glenn's last job was the owner of Gorge Networks Inc. a rural Internet provider using fixed wireless and dsl. The business was sold in 2010 and Glenn has been on the Obama plan ever since.
Glenn became interested in the Arduino a couple years ago, but he had no programming experience. At some point in the process Glenn began to control servos and motors from his old RC collection. Computer control of motors was fun, interesting and possibly a job in the future.
Self balancing robots seemed to be the holy grail of motor control! Constant feedback from sensors is processed and translated to power and direction of the motor. Any issue with any component of the system is immediately apparent.
Glenn is also a cheap Yankee so his creations use salvaged parts from electric bikes, scooters, wheelchairs, laser printers and computers.
Glenn's presentation will cover the basics of self balancing robots:
- Overview of accelerometers and gyroscopes
- Control software
- Motor controllers
- Battery and electric motor selection
The Church of Robotron
Learn about the mutant savior and our efforts to save the last human family.
We will talk about the Chuch of Robotron installation at Toorcamp 2012. It involved many different types of materials, skills, and work. We used microcontrollers, plywood, and cast away junk to create a brand new immersive experience of Robotron 2084. On top of that, we had performance, writing, and art to complete the branding of the Church. We will show what a lot of people working together can accomplish.
We hope to inspire you to take up the two eight ways!

WednesdayJul 11 2012OEN PubTalk™ - Eat, Drink and Start a Business
Oregon continues to build on its reputation as the place to go for artisan beer, wine, and spirits. The July OEN Pubtalk™ features a panel of experts who are on the forefront of that movement and who know what it takes to build a successful brewery, winery, and distillery. Panelists include leadership from Ninkasi Brewing Company, Seven Bridges Winery, and Bull Run Distillery. Kerry Finsand, CEO of Taplister will be moderating.
Come hear experienced entrepreneurs share their unique insights into developing quality products, arranging supply channels, and maneuvering regulatory requirements, among other topics.
Speakers:
Ninkasi Brewing Company – Nikos Ridge, President and CEO
Ninkasi Brewing began on June 15th, 2006 when Jamie Floyd and Nikos Ridge spent 17 hours brewing their first batch of Total Domination IPA in leased space inside a German restaurant in Springfield, Oregon. Once a brewery, the building was equipped with a 15 barrel brew house set up for brewpub brewing. A year later, Ninkasi moved to its current location at 272 Van Buren Street, in the Whiteaker neighborhood of Eugene.
The brewery now features a 50 barrel brewing system, and uses it to produce beer that is distributed throughout Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Alaska, and San Francisco. The Ninkasi family of beers has grown from a single IPA (Total Domination) to include Tricerahops Double IPA, Believer Double Red, and Oatis Oatmeal Stout, as well as some popular seasonals: Spring Reign, Radiant Ale, and Sleigh'r Dark Double Alt.
Bull Run Distilling Company – Lee Medoff, President and CEO
Naturally pure water, the finest raw grains and sugar, precise barrel aging and an ideal blend of art and science. These are the elements that define Bull Run Distilling Company. Bull Run Distilling Company are producers of small-batch, crafted distilled Rum, Whiskey and an revolving collection of other unique spirits sold only at our distillery under our Temerance label.
Bull Run Distilling Company (BRD) was founded by acclaimed Portland distiller, Lee Medoff, and business partner Patrick Bernards in the spring of 2010. What began as a "what if" conversation over cocktails a few years ago evolved into a full-on crusade in late 2009. Hundreds of hours, a few business plans and a couple of emptied bank accounts later Bull Run Distilling Company became a reality.
Seven Bridges Winery – Kevin Ross, CEO
Seven Bridges Winery is an urban winery in Portland Oregon founded in 2008. We make rich, big, Bordeaux-style reds from Washington State fruit. We started small, at just 350 cases, and have expanded production to approximately 1000 cases/year. Our focus is on making quality wine using traditional techniques. We self-distribute through our wine club, tasting room, and to a few local restaurants and wine shops.
Moderator:
Taplister – Kerry Finsand, Founder & CEO
While working for Citysearch, Kerry Finsand caught the start-up bug and left to try something new. Over a 3 year span he worked as a marketing consultant at a variety of start up companies in the technology and hospitality industries. These opportunities lead him into a position in sales and eventually the creation and testing of a Community Manager role with Groupon. Along the way, Kerry has combined his passion for craft beer, technology and marketing into various beer related projects including Taplister.com a resource to help craft beer fans find their favorite beers on tap or to discover new ones. Now his full time role is CEO of Taplister where Kerry is working on creating a marketing platform for the craft beer industry.
In his free time Kerry puts together beer events, blogs about beer and is a monthly regular on KXL's Beer O'Clock. When he is not working on Taplister you can find Kerry checking out some of the best craft beers in the world in Beervana aka Portland, Oregon.

MondayJun 18 2012DorkbotPDX 0x09
Dorkbot PDX would like to welcome you to the latest installment of our semi-regular presentation series:
DorkbotPDX 0x09
(zero-based)
When: Monday, June 18th, 2012 - 8pm Where: Backspace (map) Who: All ages -- open to the public Cost: Free! What's happening? Two great and inspiring talks!
LAMOSO
The LAMOSO (LAsar/MOtion/SOund) is a MIDI controller; that is, it's a device that sends MIDI to my computer. MIDI is a standard music protocol that allows electronic musical instruments (e.g., the LAMOSO) and computers to communicate with each other. It's not audio - it's digital data that includes values for pitch, length, volume, etc.
So... the LAMOSO uses lasers and photogates to send signals to a computer, which then turns that data into sound.
The lasers hit (or don't hit) photogates. The photogates connect to a Teensy++, a "microcontroller development system" (it's the computer chip thingy in the pictures), and that sends my computer data about whether there is or is not a laser beam light hitting the photogate. Max, a music programming language, is used to interpret that data into music.
Visually and musically, what this means is that there's lasers crisscrossing an area, and when those lasers are broken, it changes the music.
Digital Painting
Jeremy Rotsztain writes software to generate digital images that closely resemble paintings. Instead of working with paints and pigments, he prefers to use digital materials. He collects popular images from the Internet and iconic scenes from Hollywood films -- and uses their pixels and sounds to generate entirely new compositions.
Jeremy will be presenting and discussing two recent works:
1) "Obsessions" (prints made from photos of adorable pets)
2) "Action Painting" (abstract expressionist animations made from high octane car chases, violent punches, fiery gun shots, and sublime explosions).

SaturdayOct 22 2011Ubuntu 11.10 Release Party
I'm proud to announce Ubuntu Oregon's 11.10 Release Party will take place on October 22nd, 2011 at Backspace, 115 NW 5th Ave, Portland, Oregon. Although this will not be a catered event there will be plenty of food and beverage options for those who bring money. Backspace makes everything from Nachos to Hummus and has a wide variety of local non-alcoholic beverages. Additionally next door there is a very decent burger shop that sells domestic and micro brews and there is Chinese food and other options in close proximity.
It is pretty likely that we may break off into a group after the release party to grab a cocktail for those who are interested and during the event we will have access to free wifi and power!
I would like to take a quick second and thank Eucalyptus for sponsoring some custom Ubuntu Oregon Oneiric T-Shirts... We should have close to enough for everyone who attends but just in case I will say they are going to be given out on a first come first serve basis!
Feel free to bring a friend or relative and please RSVP at http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/ubuntu-us-or/1335/detail/ (You can RSVP last minute if need be) I'm hoping some of the local Canonical people will be able to attend and I'm going to ping them with this announcement so we shall see!

Marietta Harrison - Soothie Sucker's Founder, CEO, & Mom Marietta Harrison is a true "mompreneur." About 15 years ago, before most pediatricians stopped prescribing antibiotics for many common ailments, Marietta lost faith in the medical community. Relying on her own research and input from friends and fellow parents familiar with natural medicine, she began creating her own herbal remedies and mixing them with fruit juices to help treat her own children.
Years later, while brainstorming with her husband, musician Michael Allen Harrison, and his sister, they came up with the idea to put natural medicines into ice pops. As they began to move forward with their idea, they were amazed at the lack of products available to treat children for colds and other illnesses. Marietta's experience with adding herbal medicines to her children's fruit juice helped them develop a great tasting and effective product - and Soothie Suckers were born.

WednesdayMar 9 2011OEN PubTalk™ - Raising Money: Casting a wider net
Oregon's entrepreneurial community is growing and thriving. In fact, Oregon entrepreneurs raised more than $200 million last year. Many of these companies have raised money in Oregon, but at some point, also made the decision to cast the funding net outside of the state.
Raising money for your company is never easy and looking out of state inevitably creates some new challenges such as; How do you go about getting connected to investors in other states? Do investors follow a different methodology when investing in companies outside of their state? Are most out of state investments done by VC firms or are there also angel investments?
Join us as we have a panel of experts discussing all aspects of out of state funding.

MondayOct 25 2010Open Source Hardware Users Group discussion
There are people who get really excited about building hardware and Open Source. There are a few holes in the stack, and as a community we can get started on fundamental tools that will make things easier for all of us. Some topics that came up in the session on Saturday.
The tools for programming FPGA's are all proprietary let's design an open source FPGA, most of the patents are running out soon.
There are open source 3d modeling tools, but will they tell you where the center of gravity of your amature rocket is? That's an important thing to know when it passes mach 1.
Radio is awesome.
Look for an "Art of Community" book, or a tshirt that says "free as in freedom" amongst the dorkbot crowd to find the discussion. Don't worry if you miss this meeting there isn't even a listserv up yet it's a meeting of convenience as many of the people from Saturday's discussion are going to be at DorkBot anyways.

WednesdayMay 12 2010OEN PubTalk - The Art of Bootstrapping
Join OEN at the May 12 PubTalk where five successful entrepreneurs will reveal to you their secrets on the art of bootstrapping. The founders of Jama Software, Paydici, Rumblefish and Reliable Remodeler will share with you how, prior to their first round of funding (if any), they used creative solutions and drew from nontraditional resources to build their companies with limited capital. They'll share their advice on where to cut corners and help you identify when you can't afford to be cheap. You’ll also learn how to grow a company organically; creative ways to generate and manage cash flow, and the challenges of putting everything at risk.
This panel discussion will be moderated by Rick Turoczy, the founder and principal writer of Silicon Florist, Portland's premier blog on technology and entrepreneurship.
Moderator: Rick Turoczy of Silicon Floriist Panelists: Eric Winquist of Jama Software, Eli Alford-Jones of Paydici, Paul Anthony of Rumblefish and Eric Doebele of Reliable Remodeler.

WednesdayApr 14 2010OEN Pub Talk- SplashCast- What Happened?
Failure isn’t always a bad thing as long as you learn from it. SplashCast, launched in 2007, was originally founded around the notion of helping consumers put together videos, text, graphics and music embedded in broadcast "channels." Despite raising over $4 million in funding, SplashCast was unable to survive and closed its doors in 2009.
Please join OEN for the April 14th PubTalk to hear what happened, and what the team learned from failure. You will hear from one of the Founders of SplashCast, as well as a few investors in the company. This panel discussion will highlight the positive moves the company made, as well as share some valuable lessons of what to avoid. Learning from their insights and knowledge will undoubtedly help you in your decision making processes so that your company may avoid the same pitfalls.
Speakers: Tom Turnbull; Investors: Angela Jackson and Jon Karl; Moderator: Dave deFiebre
Tom Turnbull Tom Turnbull is a lawyer and entrepreneur. He has worked in business development, product, and legal roles at three venture backed startups. Of the three startups, one was a success (Internet Brands, Inc. NASDAQ: INET), one a soft landing (BizBuyer.com), and the last a sad ending (SplashCast Media). Tom also headed up new media strategy and business development for the LA Times and business development for Knowledge Learning Corporation. Additionally, he was a consulting manager at Andersen and a transactional lawyer. He received a law degree from the University of Washington and an M.B.A. from New York University with an emphasis in finance and entrepreneurial studies.
Jon Karl Jon is an experienced entrepreneur who co-founded two Portland companies, ieLogic and iovation. As Vice President of Corporate Development for iovation, Jon plays a role in defining the company's business strategy, and is responsible for the creation of strategic partnerships, technology alliances and mergers or acquisitions. At ieLogic, Jon was instrumental in creating and driving the company brand and technology innovation that led to the company's successful sale in just five years.
An expert in the areas of Internet security and fraud management, Jon is a frequent speaker at industry trade shows, where he speaks on various topics including online fraud management, online privacy, and emerging technologies that protect online environments against fraud and abuse.
Jon holds a B.S. in Economics from Oregon State University, and has been an active investor over the last 5 years in a diverse range of start-up ventures. He lives in Tualatin with his wife, two boys, a dozen chickens and a dog.

TuesdayMay 19 2009Portland's Pink Slip Party
Portland’s companies have been hit hard by the recession and the tech crowd has seen the impact first-hand. However, there remains massive energy around Portland’s tech scene that doesn’t always find its way to the companies and individuals who can most benefit from its vitality. We believe strongly that Portland possesses the resources and the will to take care of its own.
In this dynamic and challenging economic climate finding a new job can be frustrating – companies are tending to extend fewer courtesies to job seekers and opportunities are harder to locate. The tools, methods, and resources for finding work have changed dramatically as a result of technology and the current recession. Identifying those organizations with the ability to guide and assist is tricky at best. Boly:Welch and YPOP are bringing together resources to help you through the process. The Pink Slip Party is a chance to begin the discussion and make new connections between innovative technical professionals and resourceful business leaders. Together we can make a difference.

WednesdayJun 18 2008Calagator mini code sprint
Calagator is an all-volunteer, open-source project to develop a calendar aggregation system for the Portland technical community. For further details about the project, see calagator.org
The Calagator team has made excellent headway since we've started this project a few months ago. I'm pleased to announce our preliminary roadmap to version 1.0: http://code.google.com/p/calagator/wiki/Roadmap
If you're a designer, writer, or programmer, we could use your help in designing new UIs, writing documentation, and adding interesting features.
We have two code sprints coming up: 1. Wednesday 6/18 at Backspace, from noon until it's time to leave for Ignite Portland. 2. Saturday 6/21 at CubeSpace, from 10am until 6pm, although we often end up moving to the Side Door and staying later.
You do not need to stay for the entire code sprint -- stay as long as you'd like. Everyone is welcome to participate, even if you haven't attended a code sprint before. If you want to help with programming, experience with Ruby on Rails and agile development is helpful, but you're welcome to come even if you're new to these because this is a great way to learn.
