DESCRIPTION:Electrogals 2010 - Call &amp\; Response&#13\;\nAll Women - Al
l Electronic&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe concert will showcase female electronic
music performers from Portland and the West Coast\, featuring synthesist
s\, sonic explorers\, deep listeners\, circuit benders\, and beat mangle
rs. The performances will cover a wide range of styles\, from beat-heavy
song forms to abstract noise-generated soundscapes. Some of the perform
ances will also include the audience\, in ways that will definitely surp
rise and delight - and no\, there won't be any embarrassing sing-alongs.
  Probably.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbout the Electrogals series&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAl
though there is nothing inherently manly about creating or performing el
ectronic music\, the female electronic musician is something of a rare b
ird. Electrogals 2010 will be the fourth in this series of showcases for
women who have immersed themselves in this art form.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe
first Electrogals show happened in 1995 at Mills College in Oakland\, w
hen composer Heather Perkins gathered a group of female electronic music
ians for a show at the Mills Concert Hall. In 2004\, Heather put on anot
her Electrogals concert as part of the Sound/Craft music series at the P
ortland Museum of Contemporary Craft. In the spring of 2008\, Heather Pe
rkins\, Mary Wright and Christi Denton put on an Electrogals concert at
Holocene\, filling both stages with an amazing lineup.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAl
l compositions for Electrogals 2010 will be written by Portland composer
and performer Heather Perkins\, and performed by an all-star roster of
female electronic music performers.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nNOTE: The tim

DESCRIPTION:Designing Experience with Sound&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe Haunted Ga
rden is a sonic environment that participants control by their mere pres
ence. It is a room that listens to the notes in your voice and uses them
to compose music and change the color of the room. As the project progr
essed\, further opportunities for control were implemented. An interacti
ve kiosk gives users the ability to choose instruments and control sensi
tivity and reactivity parameters. The next step was to insert audio from
other times and places by playing field recordings (e.g.\, baby yaks in
Tibet\, the 8-line in San Francisco)\, allowing the Haunted Garden to a
ctively respond to the augmented sonic environments. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nSim
ran will discuss the challenges of designing with sound\, and how he dev
eloped “listening agents” who react and comment on sound in the environm
ent. He will relate experiences—both as software developer and sound art
ist—and explore sound as a medium. Topics will include what is sound scu
lpture\, what challenges were uncovered in creating it\, whether the exp
erience worked according to plan\, the challenges in developing applicat
ions for these sorts of interactions\, the unforeseen consequences resul
ting from initial forays into these kinds of devices\, and how an interf
ace based on sound might change how we relate to sound and sonic devices
.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbout the Speaker&#13\;\n Simran Gleason is an artist a
nd professional nerd. He started drawing the day after getting a master’
s degree in computer science (symbolic and heuristic computation) from S
tanford and drifted through many media before arriving at his current fo
cus: making algorithms that make music. Among his more successful instal
lations is Haunted Garden\, a room that listens to you\, finds the notes
in your conversation\, and uses them to compose an ambient sound and li
ghtscape. He also did the generative music and light algorithms for SWAR
M\, a gaggle of open source someday-autonomous spherical robots. His wor
k has been shown in galleries in San Francisco and Palo Alto\, as well a
 s installations at Maker Fair\, Yuri’s Night\, Coachella\, and the speci
al olympics of art: Burning Man. Kepler’s Orrery is his first iPhone app

DESCRIPTION:For the February edition of eBay Tech Tuesdays we'll be bring
ing in some of the fine folks over at Marmoset\, a boutique music agency
here in Portland\, to talk music and technology.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nRyan W
ines\, Managing Partner and CEO\; Shane Geiger\, Digital Team Lead\; and
Ryan Rebo\, Developer\, will be talking about their website and app\, s
haring their thoughts on how technology has changed their business so fa
r\, what they're seeing currently\, what they foresee coming down the ro
ad\, and what unknowns have them scratching their heads.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
Marmoset also has a super secret band coming in from out of state to pla
 y. So secret we're not even allowed to know who they are... But this is
what we've been told:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n• Instrumental electronic pop that
borrows from the playbook of Justice and Daft Punk\, at least in terms o
f mystique&#13\;\n&#13\;\n• One could say that they sound like an ’80s s
ynth-rock band\, but it goes deeper than that. They have a fanatic follo
wing from the people who have listened and seen them live. The way they
 present themselves is a sincere approach to combine art and music.&#13\;
 \n&#13\;\nAnd we've been guaranteed they're rad. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nRSVP no

DESCRIPTION:October's Tech Tuesday will be incorporating three of our fav
orite things: music\, tech\, and accessibility\, into one evening – and
we are so excited.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nOctober's Tech Tuesday will be incorpo
rating three of my favorite things: music\, tech\, and accessibility\, i
nto one evening – and we are so excited!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWe recently had
the pleasure of being introduced to Myles de Bastion\, Founder and Execu
tive Director of CymaSpace. CymaSpace is a non-profit technology incubat
or and performance venue in SE Portland that’s using cymatic technology
to do some very cool stuff with the performing arts and accessibility.&#
13\;\n&#13\;\nCymatics is the science of wave phenomena (especially soun
d wave phenomena) and their visual and tactile representations.&#13\;\n&
#13\;\nWe found Myles to be incredibly inspiring and motivational\, and
were absolutely thrilled when he agreed to participate in this month’s M
eetup. He’ll be sharing his personal experience with hearing impairment\
, the motivations and passions behind CymaSpace\, and the technologies b
eing developed there.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThere will be demos of CymaSpace’s
hardware and software technologies during Myles’ presentation. The demos
will include an acoustic singer/songwriter performing original songs\,
accompanied by a Certified Deaf Interpreter performing interpretive ASL\
, and a musical duo playing various instruments to demonstrate a full ra
nge of sonic frequencies translated into light.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIf we’re
lucky\, there will be some other cool demo surprises as well.&#13\;\n&#1
3\;\nThis event is all-ages and with ASL interpreters for both the verba
l presentation and demos\, it is designed to be fully accessible to the
Deaf community. As always\, our Meetup is open to the public\, so please
spread the word.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAs usual\, doors open at 5:45pm and the
presentation starts at 6:30pm. We expect this one will run a little lon
ger than usual\, though\, ending closer to 8:15ish.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\
 ;\nMore about CymaSpace:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nhttp://www.cymaspace.org/&#13\;\
n&#13\;\nCymaSpace’s mission is to make the performing arts more accessi
ble and inclusive to Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities by supporting
research and development of new and emerging cymatic technology\, hostin
g workshops and forums\, and supporting an in-house team of tech innovat
ors.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nCymaSpace also presents live performing arts events
enhanced by specialized equipment and installations which translate audi
o information into sight (light) and touch (vibration).&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&
#13\;\nRSVP now and we'll see you on the 27th!&#13\;\n&#13\;\n\n\nTags:

er new book Designing with Sound (and likely her other recent book Calm
 Technology).&#13\;\n&#13\;\nQuestions and discussion included.&#13\;\n&#
 13\;\nDoors at 6:30. Presentation at 7:00&#13\;\n&#13\;\nPre-order a har

 ing platform\, Safari:&#13\;\nhttp://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920051
 923.do&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbout the book:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSound can profoundl
y impact how people interact with your product. Well-designed sounds can
be exceptionally effective in conveying subtle distinctions\, emotion\,
urgency\, and information without adding visual clutter. In this practi
cal guide\, Amber Case and Aaron Day explain why sound design is critica
 l to the success of products\, environments\, and experiences.&#13\;\n&#
13\;\nJust as visual designers have a set of benchmarks and a design lan
guage to guide their work\, this book provides a toolkit for the auditor
y experience\, improving collaboration for a wide variety of stakeholder
s\, from product developers to composers\, user experience designers to
 architects. You’ll learn a complete process for designing\, prototyping\
 , and testing sound.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn two parts\, this guide includes:&
#13\;\n&#13\;\n・Past\, present\, and upcoming advances in sound design&#
13\;\n・Principles for designing quieter products&#13\;\n・Guidelines for
intelligently adding and removing sound in interactions&#13\;\n・When to
use voice interfaces\, how to consider personalities\, and how to ・build
a knowledge map of queries&#13\;\n・Working with brands to create unique
and effective audio logos that will ・speak to your customers&#13\;\n・Ad
ding information using sonification and generative audio&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
About the authors:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAmber Case studies the interaction bet
ween humans and computers and how our relationship with information is c
hanging the way cultures think\, act\, and understand their worlds. Case
has spoken\, performed and written about the future of sound design at
conferences and events around the world. Case is also the author of Calm
Technology (O'Reilly\, 2015). She lives in Portland\, Oregon and online
@caseorganic.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAaron Day (who will not be in attendance)
has been designing sound experiences and interfaces since 1998. He has w
orked for clients including Bruel &amp\; Kjaer\, Fiat\, Ferrari\, Masera
 ti\, Wire\, Mozilla\, Qoros\, Telefònica\, Bosch\, Vodafone\, Sprint\, S
iemens Audi and Samsung. Aaron lives with his family in Berlin\, Germany

DESCRIPTION:Interested in making music on Linux? Ever wanted to customize
your own interface and workflow in your music making? Use your phone to
do some mobile EQ-ing a venue\, or completely repurpose a midi controll
er?&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn this introductory workshop\, we will explore diffe
rent ways of interfacing with Linux-based audio applications in order to
optimize modularity/customizability in an accessible fashion - this cla
ss is open to all levels\, even if you are brand new to Linux!&#13\;\n&#
13\;\nI will demonstrate how users can use OSC (Open Sound Control\, an
alternative and complement to MIDI) to communicate between different pro
grams such as Sooperlooper\, Puredata (PD)\, Ardour\, etc. We will utili
ze open-stage-control to play with how you can make your own GUI in an e
asy way. We will also glimpse at integrating some modules from automaton
ism in PD\, which should feel familiar for synth lovers. I recommend ins
talling and playing around with automatonism in PD (or another flavor of
PD such as purrdata ) if you get the chance beforehand!&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
A Raspberry Pi or Linux laptop will be sufficient for this class\, but y
ou will probably want to use a usb sound card or an audio hat unless you
don't mind lots of cracks and pops! We will try to have as many computer
 s available as we can on hand.\n\nTags: linux\, audio\, puredata\, music
