March PADNUG - Mobile First Responsive Design by Jason Grigsby – Intel Hawthorn Farms 3 (HF3) Campus Mobile first and responsive web design aren’t simply two great tastes that go great together. No they represent much more than that. Mobile first responsive web design is the responsible way to build responsive designs. Mobile first responsive web design is the best way to build something that is both responsive from a layout AND a performance perspective. But if mobile first is the right way to do responsive design, then why are so few people doing it? In this presentation, we’ll dig into why mobile first responsive design matters and the five techniques necessary to make it work. Jason Grigsby was one of the project leads on the Obama iPhone Application and helped design the user interface for the Wall Street Journal’s Blackberry application. He founded and organizes Mobile Portland, a local mobile development user group. Jason built his first web page in 1995. He has spent the last 11 years building web sites professionally before being bitten by the mobile bug prompting him to throw caution to the wind and start a new company focused on mobile and web development. He blogs at CloudFour.com (http://cloudfour.com/) and can be found on Twitter as @grigs (http://twitter.com/grigs). During this event, your local Microsoft Developer Technology Specialist will provide you an inside look at Black Box Testing, show you the capabilities of Microsoft Test Manager, and address the Developer’s experience in quality enablement through white box testing. Furthermore, we’ll cover how quality is an accountability and addressable by the entire development organization. You’ll also have an opportunity to learn the value of Build, Deploy, Test, and Lab Management from our ALM Partner, Crosslake Technologies, and gain exposure to enterprise cloud based cross platform application testing with Perfecto Mobile. We look forwarding to seeing you there! |

Portland F# Meetup – Incomm Digital Solutions Let's meet up and chat about F# in the web world. Ryan Riley (@panesofglass) is a proud member of the Fightin' Texas Aggie class of ‘01, a Visual F# MVP, and Engineer for Tachyus, a start-up using F# to profoundly revolutionize the oil & gas industry. He runs the Community for F# virtual user group and serves on the management committee for the Open Web Interface for .NET (OWIN) specification. F# on the Web Most people think of F# as good at math or complex problem solving. It is actually a fantastic for a very wide array of tasks, including web programming, which helped the start-up Tachyus go from 0 to production in 12 weeks. In this talk, we'll compare and contrast a web application written in familiar C# patterns with various features provided by F#, including function composition, computation expressions (async), type providers, and active patterns. We'll also cover differences in application design patterns. Since Ryan is remote, we're going to host this in Google Hangouts, so even if you're not able to physically make it to the hangout, come join us! It is going to be a great time. June PADNUG - Let's Talk About the Internet of Things – Intel Hawthorn Farms 3 Auditorium (HF3) Campus In this course Microsoft's Jeremy Foster gives an introduction to the world of IoT - the Internet of Things. We’ll get definitions for various IoT terms and some bold predictions of the future where the internet is not so much a collection of devices as it is a collection of sensors and gadgets attached to people, vehicles, houses, and a lot more. And we’ll also get the basics of how to write software for these devices using the familiar and rather high level JavaScript language on Node.js. This means that instead of writing difficult code in languages such as C or Wiring, modern IoT hackers can write easy code and have access to the vast number of node modules that already exist. As an example project, you’ll meet Tweet Monkey and see what little it takes to put together your own maker project.

Microsoft Flow hackaton – Lucky Labrador Brew Pub Microsoft has a tool in preview called "Flow" - you should check it out: https://flow.microsoft.com/en-us/ in theory this tool will eventually roll out to Office 365 users and be an end-user option for creating simple workflow and systems integration beyond the SharePoint workflow platform. For example, maybe you want a Tweet to be logged in CRM then have a task show up in Slack - Flow might be a solution here. But, how does it work? How easy is it to use? Is this a replacement for SharePoint Workflow? Is this a potential enterprise tool that will put Nintex or K2 out of business? In initial research, lots of the Portland SharePoint community had trouble getting their Flow to work correctly, but there must be some way to do it! Let's uncover these things together. At this casual meeting we'll be doing group R&D around Flow. Bring your laptop and sign up for the Flow trial. |

The Hackster Microsoft Roadshow – Holliday Inn Portland West The Hackster Microsoft Roadshow is an exploratory, first look workshop into how IoT leverages cloud technologies. This four hour workshop is designed primarily for people working in the tech industry in companies with IoT projects and/or may find themselves needing to expand their knowledge beyond the local device and understand downstream architectures in the cloud. This workshop addresses how data from a device may be received and subsequently processed. This class is not about the device, it is about device data and cloud back ends. This is a lecture-lab style course in which topics are presented by the instructor. Labs are completed by students during the workshop, or students may finish labs after the conclusion of the workshop. This workshop presumes no knowledge of Azure cloud products. It does presume some knowledge with making an IoT device using an Arduino or Raspberry PI and/or other such related “maker” experiences and skills. THE INSTRUCTOR Kent Stroker is a Senior Consultant at Microsoft IoT OEM. In this workshop, we hope to introduce students to Azure Cloud, the Azure IoT portfolio, and streaming analytics and dashboards. We'll provide hands-on experience building a basic “cold” and “hot” path IoT, cloud-based, back-end processing architecture. Here's a preview the first event that happened in Charlotte, North Carolina on Monday, June 12th on YouTube: 1st half, 2nd half Every participant attending this event will receive IoT completion certificates. WHAT TO BRING Since we want to make the most of our time at the workshop, please follow the instructions to prepare for the workshop before arriving. You can download everything from the github page here. It is strongly advised for students to print a copy of the lab handout for easy reference during the workshop. Bring a laptop running Windows 10 that has wireless network capability. YES, you can use a virtual machine running on your mac or linux computer! Don't forget your power supply! Do the following on your laptop: Enable Developer Mode Enable Windows feature “Windows Subsystem for Linux” Make sure you can invoke a bash shell from a Command Prompt window Install Node.js v6.10.3 LTS from www.nodejs.org Install Visual Studio 2017 Community Edition (it's free!) Create a Microsoft Azure subscription. Azure accounts are free for the first 30 days and come with $250 credit. OPTIONAL It's a good idea to plan on being able to provide your own hotspot connectivity. Packing an extension cord is often a good idea. A mouse is often nice too. COURSE TOPICS Lab 1: Azure Cloud IoT Hub Lab Lab 2: Store Messages to Table Lab Lab 3: Data Visualization Web App Lab INSTRUCTOR COMMENTS This is a very cram packed 4 hours, come prepared to learn at a fast pace. Also, understand that this course will not make you an expert in Azure IoT, rather this is a first look at the depth and breadth of the Microsoft IoT technology stack and introduces to some of the major pieces of a typical IoT cloud architecture. You should come away from this workshop with a sense of “knowing what you do not know” and eager to learn more. There are many avenues for learning more and we will wrap the workshop with next steps and learning resources you may wish to explore. Look forward to seeing you at one of these workshops this summer! PRIVACY NOTICE This event is jointly operated by Microsoft and Hackster. Any data collected may be used by both Microsoft and Hackster. Please read their full privacy statements. Microsoft’s is here and Hackster’s is here. FAQS Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event? You must be at least 18 to attend this event. What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event? Parking onsite. How can I contact the organizer with any questions? Email [email protected] or post your questions on the meetup page here. What's the refund policy? Tickets are free, but please let us know 48 hours before the event start if you can't make it, since we have to arrange catering and we'd like to be able to open your ticket to someone else. Do I need to have a Windows machine to attend this event? No, it's easy to run Windows on a virtual machine on your Mac or Linux computer. |

PADNUG - Kirk Davis and Paul Fryer: Building .NET Serverless Applications with AWS! – Intel Hawthorn Farms 3 (HF3) Campus A serverless approach to computing is one where services required to run a system are managed and automated. Developers don’t need to worry about running server instances and you pay only for the time code is actually executing, instead of servers hosted by the hour. Learn how to build .NET based serverless applications with Amazon Web Services (AWS). We’ll build an ASP.NET Core API and deploy it to AWS’s function as a service, Lambda and API Gateway. Then we'll deploy a single page application (SPA) with AngularJS using AWS’s storage service, S3 and content delivery network, CloudFront. This entire serverless application will be built, deployed and ready to serve at scale during the demo. |

MS EXCEL - ADVANCED EXCEL FORMULAS & FUNCTIONS – Union Bank Tower Want to take your career to the next level?Practical, Hands-on Training for Advanced Excel Formulas & FunctionsMicrosoft Excel is perhaps the most important computer software program used in business today. That's why so many workers and prospective employees are required to learn Excel to enter or remain in the workplace. Unfortunately many college students, recent grads, and professionals haven’t mastered Excel or have the adequate Excel skills employers are seeking. According to Payscale, “ 80 percent of job openings require spreadsheet and word-processing software skills. Yet so many people never even give Excel a chance because it has an intimidating stigma around it.” If you walk through the finance or accounting department at any major corporate office, you will see computer screens filled with Excel spreadsheets outlining financial results, budgets, forecasts, and plans used to make big business decisions. Marketing and Product profesionals using Excel to list customer and sales targets; managing thier sales force and planning future marketing plans based on past results. Pivot tables to quickly and easily summarize customer and sales data by category with a quick drag-and drop. HR professionals using giant spreadsheets full of employee data and understand exactly where the costs are coming from and how to best plan and control them for the future. Microsoft Excel is one of the top tools for data analysis and the built-in pivot tables are arguably the most popular analytic tool. MAKE YOUR RESUME STAND OUTThey are NOT seeing if you simply have Excel as a skill. They are diving deeping when it comes to determining which candidate to interview and hire. They look for Pivot Table, VLOOKUP, Macros, VBA, Conditional Formatting, Charting and Filtering…These are far more telling of your ability to an employer then writing Excel. Someone who writes VLOOKUP, Pivot Table, Filtering demonstrates an ability to analyse data and so has eliminated a potential barrier in the mind of the hiring manager reviewing your resume. In essence, use actual Excel functions in your Resume! INCREASE YOUR EARNING POTENTIALDid you know that Excel know-how can instantly increase your job prospects as well as your starting salary? Excel is a transferrable skill that any hiring manager understands is critical. Research shows job applicants who know MS Excel make $22.66 per hour on average compared to the $20.14 per hour their peers make who don’t know the program. That’s roughly an extra $20 per eight-hour workday and $100 per work week, simply for knowing how to use a single computer program. Moreover, full-time employees in certain industries can see a starting salary bump of anywhere from $1,000 to $7,000 per year based on their Excel skills. That’s not chump change you can ignore. INSPIRING ENTREPRENEUR?A majority 63 percent of twenty-somethings want to start their own business. How will you stay organized, track data, or forecast your finances if you’re not spreadsheet-savvy? Many millennials simply want their first job. But, what about your performance once someone hires you? The biggest complaint employers have about millennials is that they lack basic hard and soft skills. These skills include things like teamwork and problem solving, but also basic administrative skills like MS Word and Powerpoint. Nike Tech Talks – Nike Decathlon Club Cafe Join Microsoft senior cloud developer advocate Paige Bailey at the next Nike Tech Talks on March 22! Paige will give a talk titled, Predicting Clothing Styles with Deep Transfer Learning. Food and beverages will be served and there will be time to network before and after the talk. RSVP: https://niketechtalk-mar2018.splashthat.com/ ABSTRACT: In this talk, we'll use image recognition to take an existing deep learning model and adapt it to a specialized domain (namely: guessing whether articles of clothing are preppy, sporty, punk, etc.). Instead of using a more intensive data classifier, like a Residual Network, we'll use deep transfer learning to overcome a data scarcity problem and build on top of an existing model. Once the transfer learning model has been trained, we'll pack it up into a dockerized container (specifying inputs and outputs, as well as a score.py file), and then call it as a web service. We will also discuss a #DataOps process for refreshing the model as trends change over time. |

This event has been invaluable to me as I continue to learn best practices and more sophisticated methods for building high-impact analytics at KEEN Footwear.” Robert Gillin, Senior Planning Analyst, KEEN, Inc. “We had analysts across three different teams attend the symposium. Making those connections has really helped break down silos within our own organization and helped build cross-functional teams. We are seeing a great cultural shift and are already looking forward to the next symposium in June.” Ben Vega, AVP, Data and Reporting Analyst, Frontline Strategy, Umpqua Bank “Attendees can expect to learn something new and valuable that they will be able to implement right away regardless of their experience with Power BI. The Symposium is a fantastic opportunity to learn about specialized topics in less technical areas, such as Power BI adoption strategies and report design considerations, from local and international experts.” Stephen Gessling, Business Intelligence Developer, NWEA |
