Don Reinertsen

Don is the author of three best-selling books on product development. For 30 years he has focused on creating fundamental changes in the way organizations develop products. Before starting his own firm, he had extensive management consulting experience at McKinsey and taught executive courses at California Institute of Technology. His books, Developing Products in Half the Time and The Principles of Product Development Flow are product development classics that helped drive the application of just-in-time and other Lean principles within the domain of product development.

David Snowden

David is a researcher and thought leader in the field of knowledge management. He is the founder and chief scientific officer of Cognitive Edge, a research network focusing on complexity theory in sense making. He is an authority on the application of complexity theory to organizations, tacit knowledge, and an observer of the way knowledge is used in organizations. Snowden developed the Cynefin framework, a leader’s guide for decision making and a practical application of complexity theory to management science. Here is a short video that highlights his approach.

April Mills

April leads a guiding coalition for change at the U.S. Navy Naval Shipyard in Puget Sound based on Dr. John Kotter’s Leading Change 8-step model. She has a passion for creating positive change, highlighting how anyone can drive change for themselves and for their organizations and communities. April has struggled with and fought against the inertia and bureaucracy of large entrenched organizations and has practical advice for change agents based on the lessons she has learned.

David Hussman

David teaches and coaches agility in companies of all sizes all over the world. For more than 10 years, David has evolved the successful adoption of agile methods in medical, retail, legal, education, health care, control systems, digital audio, financial and more. David believes in helping companies design processes that help them instead of simply teaching them to follow a process. In addition to working side by side with design and delivery teams, David works with leader and executives to promote the use of agile methods to attack the real challenges of their specific industry. In 2009, David received the Gordon Pask Award from the Agile Alliance.

David’s company DevJam provides coaching, coursework, development staff and product development. When he is not coaching or teaching, you can find David speaking at conferences around the world and publishing to a variety of sources. He has contributed to several books as well as helping to create agile curriculum for The University of Minnesota and Capella University. He was from 1996, an XP coach on the Chrysler Comprehensive Compensation System project, which was where XP was invented. He is an author of Extreme Programming Installed, the second book published about XP. He has also written Extreme Programming Adventures in C#. He is one of the 17 original signatories of the Agile Manifesto.

Malli Mastan Babu is an international mountaineer. He holds the 2009 Guiness Book World record for scaling the tallest peaks in all seven continents (The Seven Summits) in the shortest time of 172 days. He has a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India and an MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata, India. He worked as a software developer for three years, but ultimately chose an unconventional career path following his passion for adventure and mountain climbing.

Today he does motivational speeches, provides leadership consultations to corporations and leads expedition climbs around the world. He is considered one of the experts on the Himalayan mountain ranges. He will share his personal stories, his adventures and the learnings that can be translated from climbs to corporations.

Abstract Fit, Fitness, and Cucumber have revolutionized development and brought the idea of acceptance-level testing and "Outside-in-development" to a whole community of developers, testers and product owners. But can we take the idea of acceptance testing to another level and test things other than the "correctness" of our software? What if we could also specify and test the quality of interaction in our applications? What if we could involve a whole other community of people, interaction designers and user experience professionals, in not just the ideation of our products, but the actual execution of the software itself? In beyond acceptance testing, we'll look into who could be writing acceptance tests and all the things that we could be testing that most of us currently aren't doing.

BJ Clark is a SE Portland based designer, "extreme programmer", and user experience professional. He works for Goldstar Events (goldstar.com) running skunk-works projects and working on the overall user experience. Jim Isaak, IEEE Computer Society President, will share his experiences and research on the benefits of professional involvement outside of work.

Professional activities outside of work provide opportunities and benefits for engineers and their employers that are not fully appreciated for their positive impact on careers and contribution to their employer.

Involvement in professional activities allows individuals to develop skills and expertise that enables them to leverage their technical skills. Helping organize meetings, with program planning or peer review, chairing committees or being elected to the Board of Directors provides opportunities to learn and develop a robust professional network. Volunteering develops problem solving, team work and leadership skills at a minimal cost. Innovation is enhanced by exposure to new and complementary technologies and professional relationships that would not otherwise occur.

John Hagel, noted business writer and management consultant, summarizes the benefits of social capital and social networks: “… the focus of value creation is effective participation in knowledge flows, which are constantly being renewed. Finding ways to connect with people and institutions possessing new knowledge becomes increasingly important… The more your company or country can connect with relevant and diverse sources to create new knowledge, the more it will thrive. And if you don’t, others will.”

Jim Isaak is recently retired from Southern New Hampshire University. His research focused on how social capital is developed and influenced through interactions in professional activities, including professional societies, standards committees, and on-line communities.

Jim is the 2010 IEEE Computer Society President. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Society for the Social Implications of Technology and has been a director of the IEEE.

His industry experience includes Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), Charles River Data Systems, Data General, Intel, Calma and IBM. He chaired the POSIX/UNIX standards committee for 15 years.

He has a BS in Computer Studies and a MSEE in Computer Engineering from Stanford.

Talk: Developing Requirements for Legacy Systems presented by Bill Baker

Abstract: Many legacy systems were created without documented requirements. Over the years, changes were made, often without adequate documentation. Software quality suffers as the system becomes more and more complex. This presentation will provide a case study of bringing requirements management and other related process improvements to a legacy software product — one which has been successful for over twenty years.

A cross-functional team of management undertook a project to improve significantly the processes related to requirements. This presentation describes the lessons learned while undertaking this project. Among these are: • A good implementation start is essential. Outside consultants are useful. Fully involve all stakeholders. • Different audiences have different needs. Find effective ways to communicate to each audience. • Be pragmatic when choosing what requirements to write and how much effort to put into describing the current system. • Leverage tool adoption to make changes that are more general to the software development process.

Author Bio: Bill Baker is a software development manager at Sage in Beaverton Oregon. He has been involved in software development, project management, and process improvement for a number of years. While at Harland Financial Solutions, Bill led the improvements outlined in this paper. Bill has a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Washington State University and an excessive collection of other degrees from Washington State University and Michigan State University.

Abstract Since its emergence in the mid-1990s, voice-over-IP products and services have mainly attempted to mimic the "black phone" of decades past, providing cheaper basic phone service. However, VoIP has the potential to significantly improve real-time communications if it is combined with presence, context-aware and location-based services. Peer-to-peer networks can allow building highly-scalable, self-configuring systems. His research interests include Internet multimedia systems, ubiquitous computing, mobile systems, quality of service, and performance evaluation.

Dr. Kanwal Rekhi has actively participated in the emergence and growth of Silicon Valley and India. Since 1994, Kanwal has led the first venture round in numerous early-stage companies, holding 23 board positions and actively guiding entrepreneurs to 19 exits including 6 IPOs.

Prior to his venture career, Kanwal co-founded Excelan in Silicon Valley - the first company to commercialize ethernet and TCP/IP and standardize computer networks. Kanwal took Exelan public in 1987 and became the first Indo-American Founder & CEO to list a venture-backed company on the NASDAQ. He later merged Exelan with Novell, where he was EVP, CTO and a Board Director for five years, growing the company into the second largest software company in the world. He also established Novell's operations in India, making it one of the first cross-border Indo-US technology companies.

Kanwal co-founded The Indus Entrepreneurs in 1992 to promote entrepreneurship among Indians and Indo Americans around the world.
