Front End PDX - Monthly Front End PDX Meetup – Connective DX Unfortunately, tonight's speaker Micah and his family have come down with the flu, and he will not be able to speak tonight. We'll still hold the meetup, but we'll set up for a Bring Your Own Project night: bring a project to share (or get help with), or come ready to give help to others.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ For the final Meetup of 2017, we welcome back Micah Godbolt to talk design systems! About the talk: In this talk, I will discuss how moving interactivity into the Design System is not only a good choice today, but is most certainly how you will be creating Design Systems in the future. I'll also be discussing the React-powered Design System I've been helping to create which powers a few apps you might have heard of, including SharePoint, OneDrive, and Outlook for the web. About the speaker: Event Details Food, drinks, and conversation beginning at 6:30. The talk begins around 7:00. Parking is available in the parking lot directly across the street from the Connective DX office on Pettygrove. There are also bike racks available just inside the entrance to the building. |

Front End PDX - Monthly Front End PDX Meetup – Connective DX This month we're excited to have Josh Nelson join us to talk through making in-browser, multiplayer games, using a recent project called PlinkoJS as an example.
PRESENTATION DETAILS Making a game is simple, right? How about adding physics to it? What if we ran it in the browser and made it a real-time multiplayer? I think you can see that very quickly what was once a straightforward challenge has ballooned into a much more significant undertaking. The browser is not a particularly friendly environment for multiplayer games, especially those that need to be responsive and real-time. This presentation will walk us through core challenges that every developer will face when trying to make an in-browser game and how they can overcome them. Josh will highlight key concepts and solutions using a game he recently built in Node and React as an example, PlinkoJS. The following topics will be covered: • Games in the browser - The building blocks for a local, in-browser game SPEAKER DETAILS Josh Nelson is a software engineer with a management background from Portland State University. He has experience working with technologies such as React, Node, Rails, Backbone, and more. He enjoys tackling challenging problems and working with others to build robust systems. • PlinkoJS: www.plinkojs.com EVENT DETAILS Food, drinks, and conversation beginning at 6:30. The talk begins around 7:00. Paid parking is available in the lot directly across the street from the Connective DX office on Pettygrove. On-street parking is available in the neighborhood as well, of course, if you can find it. There are also bike racks available just inside the entrance to the building. |

PADNUG - Kirk Davis and Paul Fryer: Building .NET Serverless Applications with AWS! – Intel Hawthorn Farms 3 (HF3) Campus A serverless approach to computing is one where services required to run a system are managed and automated. Developers don’t need to worry about running server instances and you pay only for the time code is actually executing, instead of servers hosted by the hour. Learn how to build .NET based serverless applications with Amazon Web Services (AWS). We’ll build an ASP.NET Core API and deploy it to AWS’s function as a service, Lambda and API Gateway. Then we'll deploy a single page application (SPA) with AngularJS using AWS’s storage service, S3 and content delivery network, CloudFront. This entire serverless application will be built, deployed and ready to serve at scale during the demo. |

WHERE: Intel Hawthorne Farms 3 (HF3) 5200 NE Elam Young Pkwy Hillsboro, OR 97124 Map: http://binged.it/IntelHF3Map WHEN: Tuesday 12/6/2011 6:00 p.m. Pizza 6:30 p.m. Presentation ~8:30 p.m. After Words at On the Border Mexican Grill WHO: Kelly is the principal of Silvertail Software, which specializes in software consulting and product development for Silverlight, mobile, and cloud-based applications. He co-founded the Portland Silverlight User Group and Portland Windows Phone User Group with Erik Mork. Kelly is a regular guest on the show "This Week in Silverlight" on the Sparkling Client podcast, and presents regularly at User Groups and Code Camps throughout the Pacific Northwest on Silverlight and Windows Phone 7. TOPIC: Nitobi and Microsoft announced that the HTML5-powered cross-platform mobile application development framework known as PhoneGap now supports Windows Phone 7 “Mango” devices. With PhoneGap developers can write their application once and target iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and now Windows Phone. This announcement doesn’t preclude the end of native development. Rather it gives us the range of development options that match the variety of our business models and needs. During this session I’ll be providing background on PhoneGap and other HTML5 mobile frameworks. We’ll talk about why and when it makes sense to choose these over a native approach. There will be code, there will be demos, and we’ll see how well this can shine on an actual device. Thanks to our Premium Sponsors that make these meetings possible: azad, inc. PDX PHP - PHP TestFest! ImpactFlow There will be food and participation, so bring a computer!
PHP TestFest seeks to create more PHP core contributors by introducing PHP programmers to the PHP language test suite, teaching them how to write phpttests. From September through December, 2017, groups worldwide will meet physically or virtually to learn how to write and contribute phpt tests. You don’t have to be a C genius—in fact, you don’t need to know C at all to contribute.1 If you can write a few lines of PHP, you can write a phpt test. PHP TestFest wouldn’t be complete without prizes. We’re still working out the details, so we’ll announce prizes and how to win them soon. This kick-off meeting will be a mini-hackathon which will include information on setting up your environment and how to write and contribute phpt tests. We'll be able to continue working on our test together in the slack channel and at other meetups, so you'll want to get started with us now!!! |

PDX PHP - The Red Team is Coming! ImpactFlow There will be food, give-a-ways (elephpants), and a great time to network with the fabulous PHP Community!
This month we will have a special guest speaker from Las Vegas: Adam Englander is an Engineer, Speaker, and Author with 30 years of experience in building business applications. He has been an outspoken evangelist of PHP during what he calls “The PHP Renaissance”. Adam is a strong believer in the power of strong developer communities. He is a actively involved in the Las Vegas technical community and the Founder of PHP Vegas. Always looking to push the boundaries of what is possible with PHP, Adam has been working to expose the PHP community at large to IoT and asynchronous programming. He also advocates building better applications today by building well tested applications that are cryptography secure. The Red Team is Coming! The Red Team, hackers, criminal organizations, and nation states, are a constant threat. The systems we build are the targets. We need to understand the human collateral that hangs in the balance. We embrace methodologies to write better code and make our lives better. They do nothing for the rest of humanity that is directly affected by security vulnerabilities we introduce. In this presentation, I will put a human face on the users of our software. I will challenge you to think in terms of flesh and blood rather than ones and zeros. We are all the Blue Team. We protect the rest of humanity. Join me in the fight. The Red Team is coming! |

PDX PHP - Using Generators to Beat Memory Bloat ImpactFlow There will be food, give-a-ways (elePHPants) and a great time getting to know your fabulous PHP Community!
6:30 - We'll start off with Pizza and networking at 6:30 6:45 - 7:45 - Move into the presentation on Generators, by Korvin Szanto Memory usage is something that we as developers have to be aware of. Ever debugging a memory issue and find that your once small dataset has ballooned out of proportion? And instead of dealing with the issue, you opt for upping the memory limit? Iterators can be the answer but they require a lot of code and can be very difficult to understand at a glance. Thankfully since PHP 5.5 Generators help us create and manage what would be complex iterators with simple syntax sugar. In this talk I will go over some of the ways you can implement generators and cure your memory bloat.
7:45 - 8:30 - Hack and Help. Have a chance to try out Generators for yourself, or bring your own project and get some help from the community. |

PDX PHP - Using the Null Object Pattern ImpactFlow Food, give-a-ways, speakers and a great time to network with the fabulous PHP Community!
Using the Null Object Pattern When you develop OO PHP applications, you'll eventually get the error message "PHP Notice: Trying to get property of non-object". You can add a conditional to check if an object is null. There is however a better way. Null Object Pattern is a design pattern that helps you to simplify your application logic. The Null Object patthern removes the need to check for an object vs null by using Polymorphism. I'll demonstrate how it works with generic PHP code, and how you can apply it to work with database results.

PDXnode - PDXNode Hack Night! – CTRL-H Hackerspace Welcome to the PDXNode Hack Night!
What is a PDXNode Hack Night? PDXNode Hack Nights are your opportunity to enjoy a low-pressure JavaScript-centric environment where you shouldn't feel like you're supposed to do anything. First and foremost–just come and enjoy yourself. The night is yours: hang, hack, learn, or do whatever you’re interested in doing. 🙌 Depending on the size and interests of our attending group, we have various paths the night could go, and may or may not attempt some of the following: Map Ctrl-H into Hackerspace Regions The hackerspace will be mapped into 'regions', and you can feel free to gravitate towards whichever one suits your interest! • A place for beginners who want to get going with node for the first time. 'Unconference'-style Team Hacks For team-hackers, we'll have a board up and sticky-notes available available at the beginning of the night. Anyone can feel free to write the name and/or description of something they'd like to hack on with other people–and others who're interested can feel free to go to that region and join in! End of Night Show and Tell There will be a list available to write your name, or team's name down on to give a quick show and tell of your projects at the end of the night. We're pumped to see what you've been working on! Some general stuff to remember: Help is available! There will be seasoned Nodesters ready and available to help anyone with questions or advice in any of the hack-zones: beginners, solo, and group projects. PDXnode - PDXNode Presentation Night – Vacasa 🚨Special Presentation Night Alert! 🚨
We're are extremely lucky to have Gil Tayar (a Node.js super-wizard) with us to take with him on a deep-dive into Node ES Modules. Here's Gil's rundown of what he'll be covering in his talk "Node ES Modules - something almost, but not quite entirely unlike CommonJS": CommonJS, along with the npm registry, has become the de-facto standard in Frontend and NodeJS development today. But Native ES Modules are coming to NodeJS and the browser. On the surface, they look incredibly similar to CommonJS modules, but the differences are important. In this talk I will describe these differences, the consequences of these differences, and how to start preparing for the new world of Native ES Modules. Why is this talk important? Because Native ES Modules are coming. And everybody will be talking about them in 2019. And we need to be prepared, for it is going to be a difficult transition, because the differences are subtle and they bite. (as a member of the Node Modules WG, I can definitely bring some insight into why ES Modules in Node is taking so long). 👉This is going to be an epic night not to miss! See y'all there! 🎉🎉🎉 Important Location Reminder __________________ Presentations begin at 6:30pm. PHPDX - Laravel and Vue.js – Vacasa Food, learning and a great time to network with the fabulous PHP Community! This month Kurtis Holsapple will be showing us how to Laravel and Vue.js work together.
Kurtis is a developer here in Portland, OR who loves making things work, which is why he loves both Laravel and Vue.JS. Laravel is the most starred full stack framework on Github (54k stars at the time of writing) and it comes out of the box bootstrapped and ready to go with Vue.js. Because Laravel a server side framework, you have everything you need to get started writing an amazing web application out of the box. Because Vue.js is amazing, the Laravel community has adopted this frontend framework to make your life easier whenever you need to use Javascript. If you're curious about how well Vue can integrate with other tooling, this talk is for you! Evan You, the creator of Vue.js, has talked at the last three years of Laracon US. We'll talk about how you can use VueJS with Laravel, the tooling around modern PHP (composer, PHPUnit, etc), Laravel Mix (the Webpack configuration ready to go with Laravel) and more. Join us for a night of fun code examples and more! This is a companion talk focused more on the Laravel/PHP side of things. Join us at the Portland Vue.js meetup to continue this talk, but that one will focus more on the Vue side of things. https://www.meetup.com/Portland-Vue-js-Meetup/events/262453723/ |

If you've never written a test, or want to see how we can cover a legacy code base with a brand new test suite, we'll be doing it live! We'll start with a basic contact form and build out a brand new testing setup based on PHP Unit and Composer, and when we're done we'll try to build out additional functionality all covered by unit tests. |

PHPDX - Static Sites: Use Your Smarts to Build Something Dumb – Graybox Pizza, learning and a great time to network with the fabulous PHP Community!
Join us as Kurtis Holsapple shares about Static Sites. Let's build out a site with no serverside processing at all. Static sites are nothing more than static files put up on a server that doesn't need any serverside runtimes. That means that you can host your site on places like Github Pages, AWS S3, or any other cheap hosting options. We can still leverage our PHP knowledge to build cools sites that have good structure and lots of content. You can still create things like blogs, collections of data, product listings, and more. |

PHPDX - Up to my Eyeballs in Technical Debt! – Graybox **PLEASE NOTE THE DAY HAS CHANGED. We will be meeting on a monday this month. There will still be pizza, learning and networking with the fabulous PHP Community!**
Every decision we make in our projects has the potential to increase or reduce technical debt. While the only way to completely eliminate the debt is to never write any code, there are steps that we as engineers, project managers, and project stakeholders can take to mitigate our risk. This talk covers the concept of technical debt, its potential to devastate projects, and red flags that project teams can look for to reduce its impact before it spirals out of control. -------------------------------------------------------------- Steve Grunwell is a Senior Software Engineer at Liquid Web. Portland Java User Group (PJUG) – New Relic Building HTML5 web apps in Java with VaadinIn this presentation, we'll take a look at building HTML5 web applications in Java using the open source Vaadin framework. Vaadin takes a different approach to web application development by automating many of the most time consuming aspects of traditional web development. Instead of constructing your application from low level DOM elements and manually handling communication and data serialization, Vaadin takes care of server-client communication and allows you to work with higher level UI components in Java. The end result is a great looking HTML5 web application that you can use in any browser without plugins. During the presentation, we'll build a Vaadin application from scratch to demonstrate the basic principles and development practices hands-on. We'll take a look at why and when you would want to use Vaadin, and will of course investigate how things work under the hood. At the end of the presentation you should have learned enough that you can start building your first Vaadin application. Speaker Marcus Hellberg:Marcus has been working with web technology for the last 15 years on everything ranging from front end development to backend architectures. Currently Marcus works as a developer advocate at Vaadin, helping the web development community learn about new technologies through blogging, workshops, talks and a lot of demo apps. |

Portland JavaScript Admirers - JavaScript Admirers' Monthly Meeting – Akamai Serverless is the new most talked about architecture pattern and quickly becoming a buzz word. The idea is for developers to stop worrying about server management and focus on code. The serverless platform takes care of the provisioning servers, underlying infrastructure, server maintenance security and scaling. We will look at three practical use cases of serverless with example code.
Secure and Scalable APIs Key concepts introduced will include triggers, rules, actions, composition and event driven architecture. Finally, serverless is relatively new and we will look at what the shortcomings are with the current technology and how to mitigate them. We will use Apache OpenWhisk as our serverless platform. Apache OpenWhisk is an open source, distributed Serverless platform that executes functions (fx) in response to events at any scale. The talk will include live demo of building and deploying an application to Apache OpenWhisk. Speaker: Upkar Lidder is a Full Stack Developer and Data Wrangler with a decade of development experience in a variety of roles. He can be seen speaking at various conferences and participating in tech groups and meetups. |

Women Who Code Portland - Cupcakes & Math: Hacktoberfest – Posies Cafe Inspired by Stephanie Hurlburt's cupcakes and math meetup in Seattle, we've started a cupcakes and math club here in PDX.
As a special treat this month, we'll be focusing on submitting PRs for Hacktoberfest, in addition to our usual math discussion! Come celebrate open source and and make your first PRs toward Digital Ocean's hacktoberfest event. Learn more about Hacktoberfest here: https://hacktoberfest.digitalocean.com/ Come join us: Commitment: Have fun. There's no need to show up regularly, on time or stay the whole time. It's a chill, "drop in whenever you feel like you need some math in your life" event. What To Bring: Bring a math textbook you want to do problems from (or a laptop with online learning materials). If you don't feel comfortable working with math, that's fine. Bring a program that's giving you trouble, or a computation-related side project. What Will Happen: You'll sharpen your math skills while eating cute pastries next to other ladies doing the same thing. We can work quietly, ask for help from others or talk about a cool thing you just learned. Women Who Code Portland - Open Source Study Night: Security – Planet Argon Open Source Study Night is specifically designed for people who would like to start contributing to open source, or have open source work that they'd like to do with others.
This month's theme: Security and Open Source. This month's study night will feature a presentation by Michaela "Miki" Demeter, Security Researcher at Intel! When looking at open source packages, how do you decide what to incorporate and what to leave behind? Ultimately, your goal is to minimize your company and your teams' exposure to risk. “Minimizing risk” doesn't mean analyzing every line of code, but does involve evaluating a project's community. Can you trust them to do work at the quality that you can feel comfortable with in your releases? Are they doing proactive security work and fixing bugs quickly? Miki has worked for the Open Source Technology Center at Intel for 5 years, and is an expert on open source communities. You'll walk away with a better understanding of how to choose open source libraries for your projects. Come prepared with: Thanks to our sponsor, Planet Argon, for hosting this event. 🙅🏼♀️ CODE OF CONDUCT 🙅🏼♀️ By attending this event, you agree to follow our Code of Conduct (https://www.womenwhocode.com/codeofconduct). Women Who Code Portland - Software Engineering Interview Preparation – Puppet Please RSVP on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/software-engineering-interview-preparation-tickets-61107524250
Women Who Code Portland is hosting a Software Engineering Interview Preparation Workshop. This event is geared towards helping women prepare for technical interviews, but we welcome everyone who supports our mission of inspiring women to excel in technology careers and follows our code of conduct. The goal of the workshop is to provide people with the opportunity to gain experience with a technical interview format. This workshop is broken into two sections: In the morning, we'll cover an introduction to solving algorithms. Participants will have the chance to see common interview algorithms, and approach how to solve them under pressure. In the afternoon, we will break into groups for mock interviews. This will help participants get a feel for what a technical interview might be like. Whiteboarding can be much different than writing on paper, especially in front of others. Participants will have the chance to practice answers to common questions, thinking out loud while solving a problem and practice techniques for how to move forward when stumped. AGENDA 9:30 - Doors Open EVENT COST The event cost is $10 for participants and includes lunch. There will be no refunds for this event. If you cannot attend, you can email us to transfer the ticket to another attendee, or we can add it to our scholarship pool.
