Dev Nation
Ace Hotel

In early 2009, several developers from Relevance and Viget Labs got together and starting talking about technical conferences. As we discussed our past experiences at regional, national, and international events, we began to realize something: large conferences are wonderful for a lot of things, but we wanted something that met a different set of goals. We came up with Developer Day, which was designed to:

  • Build lasting relationships among local peers
  • Bridge distinct technical communities

After a year of Developer Days, however, we decided a new look was in order, and thus was born DevNation. We've still got the same ideals, but we feel that the DevNation name better reflects that vision (and it's easier to Google!)

Relationships

The general pattern for a large conference runs something like this: you fly to a city, go to the event, have a great time, meet lots of great people, and fly home. More often than not, you don't see those people again until the next big conference, and that's a problem. We wanted our event to be different, so it's intentionally local. Speakers and attendees are overwhelmingly local to the conference, so when you meet someone doing something cool, you can connect with them a week later for lunch without a problem.

Technology-Agnostic

Sure, there are events that draw a wide range of developers (e.g., OSCON), but even then people tend to segregate; the Pythonists go to their sessions, the Rubyists to theirs, and the PHP devs to theirs. By having only one track, we give everyone the opportunity to see what's happening in other communities.

HTML5 Crash Course with Scott Stanfield - PDX Silverlight User Group
Webtrends

It's been nearly a decade since the last big changes to HTML, which frankly weren't all that interesting. But this time it's different. With all the excitement around the latest features and browsers, it's time to take a closer look, especially if you've been heads-down on Silverlight, like I have been. If you haven't had time to look into the HTML5 family of technologies, it's time to start.

Scott Stanfield is the CEO of Vertigo Software, Inc.

Portland Perl Mongers -- Shebangml: a markup language with bacon
Free Geek

speaker: Eric Wilhelm

Shebangml is a markup language which saves programmers from gouging their eyes out on pointy angle brackets.

Most pointy ML data (SGML/XML/XHTML/HTML) can be translated to and from this human-readable, bacony syntax. This allows modern programmers to interface with legacy software such as WWW browsers and other relics like "Enterprise Java Software". But the true power of shebangml lies in the '#!' (hash-bang/shebang) and its programmable templating features. Unlike most "don't make me write HTML" generators and markup replacements, hbml preserves the good parts of the quoting constructs and attributes+content nature of XML. This makes it not only a fine replacement for obsolete markup languages, but also an ideal foundation for new dialects and applications. The pluggable syntax and interpreter allow you to define static or dynamically loadable constructs, which allows your application to balance convenience features with security issues using clear separations.

This presentation will cover the Shebangml syntax, the basics of the parser/interpreter module, the extensions API, and two real-world applications (the FreeTUIT declarative GUI toolkit and the presentation generator Text::Slidez.)

As usual, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab.

PDX Web & Design: Killing The Angle Bracket
Webtrends

Sooner or later we all have to work with HTML, despite its verbosity. Those of us who claim to love HTML may just be victims of Stockholm Syndrome, both praising yet secretly loathing it.

Basho designer John Newman is making the trek from the swamps of Florida to show us the way. In the modern world of markup preprocessors, these alternative syntaxes allow you to write simpler, cleaner, more concise code in a shorter amount of time. Certain techniques can even allow your team members who may be less-tech-savvy to contribute content directly without forcing you to wire up a WYSIWYG style CMS.

This talk explores great alternatives to plain HTML and CSS, and covers how Basho put these tools together to facilitate a painless, team-oriented approach to building sites and web apps.

Vitamin T will be feeding us pizza and recruiting for several local positions; Webtrends will give us space; and Basho is providing John.

Hack + Help: Learning Cohort Night
PDX Code Guild at NedSpace on 5th

About the event:

Hack + Help is planning ongoing learning cohorts for those who want to learn a new skill with the increased accountability and mutual support of a class, without all the lectures and cost.

The plan is for members to choose a new topic every few months (for example, Python, or Backbone, or databases) and form a cohort that wants to work together to learn more about it. This could be through a MOOC, online tutorials, code challenges, or something else entirely.

Learning a new skill in isolation is challenging, so if you have a topic you'd like to learn more about, come meet with us on January 28th to help us build a new cohort!

Mobile Portland — Choosing The Right Stack for Mobile
Urban Airship Inc

The problem: You are an enterprise or startup with some desktop offerings, and the writing on the wall has turned into the tattoo on your forehead. The time has come to turn some or all of your money printing machine into something that can be easily accessed and used on smartphones and tablets.

The solution: It depends.

It is also the topic of Dee Madden’s presentation at Mobile Portland this month: “Choosing The Right Stack for Mobile: The Pros And Cons of Each”

The topic of Native vs Hybrid vs Pure Web vs Shared Codebase vs Whatever is a well worn one, but dynamic and ever-changing, nonetheless. In this presentation, Dee will examine the current landscape, with a pragmatic approach that holds all solutions equal. He will cover the pluses and minuses of each, and how to leverage the more endearing traits of one over the other as the best solution for the problem at hand.

Among the stacks covered are:

  • Native
  • Hybrid “Shrinkwrap” solutions – a focus on PhoneGap, with some discussion of the others, such as Appcelerator and Sencha
  • Roll-your-own Hybrid – hybrid built with a custom native container
  • Drive-Through Hybrid – Codiqa
  • Shared Codebase – Xamarin, with a dusting of the Ruby-based Rhodes framework

Throughout, Dee will show some working examples of some of these, providing some concrete examples of the advantages of each, and some of the pitfalls that can come with them as applications evolve, with an anecdote or two for good measure.

Come on out and kick the shindig in the shins! Dee will have his shinguards on!

Snowdrift.coop meetup / chat / hack session
Lucky Labrador Brew Pub

Snowdrift.coop is a volunteer-built non-profit community project focused on a new sustainable matching system to coordinate the global community in better funding shareable freely-licensed works. The Snowdrift.coop platform uses the Yesod web framework written in Haskell. Other technologies and relevant work includes basic HTML/CSS/JavaScript and general design, organizing, and other non-technical tasks like co-op structure issues.

While the community includes people on many continents across the globe, we have a strong Portland foundation with one of the co-founders, the lead developer, and several active volunteers and supporters in the area.

At this meetup, we'll mix casual chat with focusing on some refactoring on the Haskell side and hacking on HTML/CSS stuff for the new design.

Remote Tech Talk at the Guild -- Intro to Game Design in JavaScript
PDX Code Guild

With the HTML5 canvas API, web developers have the ability to draw and animate in 2D using JavaScript. And from there, it just takes a bit of structure to design a simple game.

In this Tech Talk, we will use a rudimentary game engine to design a 2D Platformer in Vanilla JavaScript. We will focus on these game design concepts: - Collision Detection & Resolution - Object-Oriented Programming and Inheritance - Trigonometric Functions for Smooth Animations - State Machines - Events - And More

We will also discuss the many differences (and some similarities) between game design and web development.

This Tech Talk is for programmers and gamers of all levels of experience. A basic understanding of JavaScript and the canvas API will help attendees follow along. Refer to this guide for an intro to drawing with canvas: https://github.com/pjz987/guides/blob/master/docs/canvas-tutorial.md
