CodeBytes - Show and Tell Social

Hello! This meetup is going to be a little different from our last ones. I intend for this to be more of a social meeting where people can bring in past CodeBytes projects to work on them or to do a little show and tell. This is also a good time to bring someone completely new to programming and we can help get them started!

If you have any questions or ideas please feel free to follow up with either Sam or Alison.

Cheers!

CodeBytes - Let's build a basic API

We have decided by popular demand to do the rest api challenge again! For those of you who have already done it you either extend the functionality of your api or help someone working on this for the first timee.

We will be building a basic API. For this exercise you will need to do some prep before the meeting. We have setup steps for Ruby, Python, and Node.js. If you are interested in a language outside of those let us know and we can try to accommodate. There are some examples in our API challenge repo currently for other languages check it out here: https://github.com/CodeBytes-PDX/rest-api-challenge

You can find the Ruby starting steps and basic app here: https://github.com/CodeBytes-PDX/rest-api-challenge/blob/master/ruby/setup.md

The Python starting steps are here: https://github.com/CodeBytes-PDX/rest-api-challenge/blob/master/python/setup.md

For now here are some resources to look through:

Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Representational_state_transfer

Ruby: http://apionrails.icalialabs.com/book/frontmatter

Node.js: https://medium.freecodecamp.com/building-a-simple-node-js-api-in-under-30-minutes-a07ea9e390d2

"Cultural myths around income tax": Tax and Conversation weekly civics meetings
Collective Agency Downtown

There are some cultural myths around income tax. We'll talk through frequent questions, and see whether the fact-based answers are relevant. We'll start by choosing the 3-5 most relevant questions to us in view of a constitutional amendment for Oregon in 2014 on income tax reform.

Some questions include: "Why government?" "What about rich people?" "Doesn't the tax law need to be nuanced to incentivize people to work?" "Is this income tax reform political?" "How do we know we can we trust the tax reform to be good for everyone in Oregon?" (These are all real questions I've been asked which touch on core issues where the answer is not obvious.)

What would you like to learn? What are you concerned or excited about? Areas for questions will include tax, membership, and/or this organization (at least one of each).

Agenda 6-7pm Tues Nov 13: 1. Intro who we are, what we're working on. 2. Choose three or five questions, talk through, share perspectives, learn. 3. Review what did we like, what can be better next time.

RSVP: https://www.facebook.com/events/366214123469511/

XPDX: Where Are Your Keys?
Con-Way

We learn more, more quickly, and more deeply, once we redefine true learning as fluency, and play our way to getting there.

"Where are your Keys?", a language learning game system developed by Evan Gardner, is an integrated set of teaching techniques that creates fluent speakers in a language without resorting to textbooks or homework.  You can play the game anywhere, anytime, with anyone, so long as you have a single fluent speaker of the target language.

Because "Where are your Keys?" is a game, learning how to play the game also trains you to teach the game.  You can take your level of fluency and teach another person up to your level.  It is a way for a community to rapidly teach themselves a language by making every learner a new teacher.

"Where are your Keys" teaches not only language, but principles of learning that can be applied to any skill or field of knowledge.

Rather than presenting a lecture, Evan Gardner and Willem Larsen will actually run and debrief the game so everyone will have a hands-on experience (and a spankin' good time!).

DevelopmentNow Little Hackathon of Horrors
DevelopmentNow Offices

At DevelopmentNow, we like learning how to use and program new technology, and the ability to write skills for Amazon's Alexa assistant is pretty exciting. We're hosting a free workshop and hackathon at our offices, during which we'll learn together to write a new Alexa skill, and demonstrate it, in an hour!

Because this will be late October, and because we also like the spooky atmosphere of that time of year, we're going to focus on thinking of skills with a Halloween bent. Given time and interest, we may even be able to put together a decision-tree narration of a haunted house. We're also eager to hear your own ideas and see what all the participants come up with together.

What's the planned schedule?

Our office doors will open at 10 am, and we'll officially kick off the session at 11. We'll share quickstart documents to everyone in attendance, and have a couple of our in-house developers with Alexa experience roaming the place to help figure things out. At 4 pm, we'll wrap up and take turns showing off what we've built.

What are my transport/parking options?

Parking around the east side of the Burnside Bridge is limited, but generally viable on weekends. We're also very close to the MLK and Burnside stop for the A Loop of the Portland Streetcar, or a block from the nearest bus stop on the 19 or 20. We have indoor bike parking as well.

What should I bring to the event?

Please bring a laptop and a willingness to learn! You don't need previous experience. We'll provide power, wifi, workspace, food, cooperative instruction, and our Echo for testing.

Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?

[email protected]

You said there will be food?

Yes! We'll provide coffee and pastries when the office doors open at 10, and order Sizzle Pie around 2 pm for our hard-working participants.

Start your path to Linux certification for free at Free Geek
Free Geek

Starting in early August the Linux Foundation, with edX, is going to offer a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), called Introduction to Linux, to help people explore the various tools and techniques commonly used by Linux programmers, system administrators and end users to achieve their day-to-day work in a Linux environment. Interested parties are welcome to sign up for free at: http://is.gd/linuxmooc

Upon completion of this training you should have a good working knowledge of Linux, from both a graphical and command line perspective, allowing you to easily navigate through any of the major Linux distributions. You will be able to continue your progress as either a user, system administrator or developer using the acquired skill set.

This is a self-paced class and students are welcome to sign up for for free and take it on their own. Free Geek wants to be successful and we've pulled together an amazing collection of volunteer instructors who will help you complete the course. Students are able to take advantage of two support programs starting in August and running through mid-October.

Structured Intro to Linux classes Tuesdays 8/19 to 10/14 5:30-8:30pm

Work alongside other students and volunteer instructors to complete two learning modules a week. Students must sign up for the online course and may want to accomplish some homework in between classes (although this will likely not be required). You are welcome and encouraged to bring your own laptop if you have one. Sign up in advance at the Free Geek front desk or by giving us call 503-232-9350.

Intro to Linux drop-in support Sundays 8/24 to 10/19 1:00-5:00pm

For students who would like to work at their own pace, or those who would like to supplement the structured Intro to Linux course, you can drop in anytime from 1-5 on Sundays to ask questions, complete assignments with assistance, or talk about more advanced topics. Volunteer instructors will be on-hand to answer all your questions.

Free certification of completion While some students may choose to get official certification from edX and the Linux Foundation, we understand that many students choose not to pay the required $250 fee. Free Geek will provide an opportunity to get unofficial certification of course completion to those students who would like to use this as a way to prove they completed this class successfully. Students must take the final test under supervision and adhere to the same ethical standards as a paid participant.

FutureTalk Summer Series with Trace Smith + Next Glass Happy Hour
New Relic

How Next Glass Combines Science, Machine Learning, and Augmented Reality to Empower Consumers

Next Glass was founded in 2012 on the premise of using science and software to ensure beer and wine drinkers never taste another bad beverage. Through patent-pending technology, Next Glass is cataloging the taste profiles of tens of thousands of bottles of beer and wine by chemically extracting the “DNA” of each using high-res accurate mass spectrometry to develop the world’s only Genome Cellar™. These pure and objective taste profiles (we collect tens of thousands of data points from each bottle of beer and wine) are then coupled with sophisticated machine-learning software and user preference data to create an incredibly accurate recommendation and discovery engine. Next Glass leverages augmented reality functionality to deliver these highly-accurate wine and beer recommendations to users on their mobile devices.

Trace will explain how each of these elements (science, machine learning, and augmented reality) benefit beer and wine consumers and how Next Glass stumbled upon the idea to combine them to do so.

Doors will open at 5:30p. The food and drinks are provided by Bellagios and New Relic. The presentation will begin right at 6p. Then stick around for a special post-event happy hour! You'll get to taste some Oregon beer and wine ... then be one of the first to demo the Next Glass app live at the event, and receive priority access to the beta later this month!

Please RSVP via Eventbrite HERE

Trace Smith is the Chief Operating Officer at Next Glass. Prior to joining Next Glass, Trace was an Associate with Quad-C Management, a billion-dollar private equity fund specializing in investing in profitable businesses valued between $50 million and $500 million and growing them in partnership with management. During his time at Quad-C, he closed two leveraged recapitalizations, one buy-side transaction, and one dividend recapitalization, in addition to his other responsibilities, which included evaluating potential leveraged buyout transactions and monitoring Quad-C's portfolio companies. Prior to joining Quad-C in 2012, Smith was a Senior Analyst at Fennebresque & Co., where he focused on advisory work in transactions including mergers and acquisitions and private capital raises across multiple industries. Trace graduated summa cum laude with honors in finance from Wake Forest University, where he was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa. He is also a graduate of Woodberry Forest School, where he was a Noland Fellow.

Learning Erlang made me a better engineer and architect

Nathan Aschbacher throws down on his favorite Erlang topic:

Learning Erlang made me a better engineer and architect.

Even if you don't think you have a use-case for Erlang, don't have an interest in functional programming, and find reading Prolog inspired syntax directly proportional to your increased consumption of Excedrin... according to Nathan Aschbacher (currently Chief Architect at Snapflow and previously Principal Consulting Architect at Basho) you should learn Erlang anyway.

Nathan will be presenting on his path to Erlang and functional programming, his initial disdain, his later begrudging respect, and finally his eventual love and nostalgia for all things Erlang-y.
