BYTE ME 2013 - Annual Exposition of Technological Art
AFRU Gallery

We here at AFRU are gearing up for Byte Me! 2013. It was a great show last year and we hope to make it bigger and better for this year. If you are not familiar with Byte Me! it is our annual exposition of technical art. So, what is ‘Technical Art’ exactly? For the context of Byte Me we are defining it as artwork whose inspiration, medium, design or execution would be prohibitively difficult if not impossible to realize without the aid of or direct incorporation of technology. The goal of this show is to not only exhibit a narrow but emergent sub section of artwork but also to foster a larger and tighter community of geeky-artists and artistic-nerds.

Pecha Kucha
An amazing space at SE 10th and Alder

Pecha Kucha Night, devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (Klein Dytham architecture), was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.

But as we all know, give a mike to a designer (especially an architect) and you’ll be trapped for hours. The key to Pecha Kucha Night is its patented system for avoiding this fate. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each – giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.

Pecha Kucha (which is Japanese for the sound of conversation) has tapped into a demand for a forum in which creative work can be easily and informally shown, without having to rent a gallery or chat up a magazine editor. This is a† demand that seems to be global – as Pecha Kucha Night, without any pushing, has spread virally to over 100 cities across the world. Find a location and join the conversation.

If you are interested in starting a Pecha Kucha Night in your city, please contact : [email protected]

Dorkbot PDX would like to welcome you to the latest installment of our semi-regular presentation series:

DorkbotPDX 0x07

(zero-based)

When: Monday, December 5th, 2011 - 8pm
Where: Backspace ( map)
Who: All ages -- open to the public
Cost: Free!
What's happening? Three great and inspiring talks regarding art, electronics, computers, physics, and a hybridized mega monster of all things strangely technical. Did we mention 3D bluetooth kittens and RF aardvarks dancing to the synthesizer sounds of the microcontroller apocalypse? Ok, I made that up...or did I?

Art and Electronics: Arcing the Gap

Jesse Mejia

Jesse will present an overview of a few recently completed projects and a few works in progress. His talk emphasizes bridging the gap between artists and pseudo-engineers, and he challenges the community to come up with a proper term for this crossover behavior.

Jesse is an artist and AV nerd represented digitally at anestheticaudio.com.

Getting Started With RF

Ward Ramsdell

Ward presents an overview of several affordable, contemporary wireless devices and demonstrates how they may be easily incorporated with today's microcontrollers. It's off-the-shelf RF demystified, and you too can go wireless with your projects!

Ward Ramsdell is a real engineer who helps takes real products to market.

SPROING!

Simran Gleason

SPROING! is a new web-based word game is like playing boggle in 3D, on platonic solids made of springs, with kittens (& aardvarks).

Simran will show off Sproing & its HTML5 implementation, show the design evolution of the game, and give you the math of spring physics simulations.

There will be a live multiplayer Sproing tournament during the talk, with chocolate at stake for the winner.

Simran Gleason is an artist and a nerd. Usually he makes noise, but sometimes likes to turn physics into games.

Self Balancing Robots 101

Glenn Phillips

Glenn Phillips got into the computer business around the era of the Mac Plus. Glenn's last job was the owner of Gorge Networks Inc. a rural Internet provider using fixed wireless and dsl. The business was sold in 2010 and Glenn has been on the Obama plan ever since.

Glenn became interested in the Arduino a couple years ago, but he had no programming experience. At some point in the process Glenn began to control servos and motors from his old RC collection. Computer control of motors was fun, interesting and possibly a job in the future.

Self balancing robots seemed to be the holy grail of motor control! Constant feedback from sensors is processed and translated to power and direction of the motor. Any issue with any component of the system is immediately apparent.

Glenn is also a cheap Yankee so his creations use salvaged parts from electric bikes, scooters, wheelchairs, laser printers and computers.

Glenn's presentation will cover the basics of self balancing robots:

  • Overview of accelerometers and gyroscopes
  • Control software
  • Motor controllers
  • Battery and electric motor selection

The Church of Robotron

Learn about the mutant savior and our efforts to save the last human family.

We will talk about the Chuch of Robotron installation at Toorcamp 2012. It involved many different types of materials, skills, and work. We used microcontrollers, plywood, and cast away junk to create a brand new immersive experience of Robotron 2084. On top of that, we had performance, writing, and art to complete the branding of the Church. We will show what a lot of people working together can accomplish.

We hope to inspire you to take up the two eight ways!

The Good Life Lab

presented by Mikey Sklar & Wendy Tremayne

http://blog.holyscraphotsprings.com/

Mikey & Wendy live in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico and have been homesteading there for the last seven years. They produces their own power, fuel, food, water and building materials. Mikey will be explaining how a little bit of embedded hardware can empower anyone to leave their day jobs and focus on the interests. Projects such as grease car temperature displays, irrigation moisture monitors, pulsed LED growlights, using machines to build with trash, fermentation controllers and recovering different battery chemistries.

Mikey is a open hardware developer who has been selling kits and has worked for Adafruit, Hack-a-Day, and Popular Science. This will be his fifth dorkbot presentation.

Blending art, nature, and mechanics

presented by Stephanie Simek

http://stephaniesimek.com/

Stephanie will be speaking about some of her recent art projects involving light, sound, and electrical components. She'll talk about her interest with combining disparate materials and pushing the limits of their inherent functional capabilities, like playfully incorporating circuitry with handwriting and the movements of Venus Flytraps. She'll also discuss her newest project, a crystal radio sculpture. Other topics to be covered include: synchronized swimming, the Golden Record, non-Newtonian lovers, and Cab Calloway.

Stephanie Simek has been living in Portland for 6 years, where she has been creating experiments with sound, performance, and sculpture. Throughout the month of June, Place Gallery will be exhibiting her most recent project, Radio Room.

Joe Grand
Making Magical Mustaches with Mustache Mayhem

World peace begins with mustaches. Tom Selleck, Burt Reynolds, Salvador Dali, Frank Zappa, Freddy Mercury, and Hulk Hogan have all harnessed the power of the mustache. It's time the rest of the world joined their ranks.

Mustache Mayhem is a hardware hack, a video game, and an interactive art piece rolled into one. Based on the short-lived Nintendo Virtual Boy video game console and retro-fitted with a BeagleBone Black Linux computer, the project provides a singular, entertaining goal: Overlay virtual mustaches onto real-world faces for points. In this presentation, Joe details the trials and tribulations behind creating his most ridiculous oeuvre yet.

Joe Grand (@joegrand), also known as Kingpin, is a computer engineer, hardware hacker, product designer, teacher, advisor, runner, daddy, honorary doctor, TV host, member of L0pht Heavy Industries, and the proprietor of Grand Idea Studio (grandideastudio.com).

CONTINUAL REPOSITIONS: THE ART OF CELLULOID Curated by Christopher May

CONTINUAL REPOSITIONS: THE ART OF CELLULOID Curated by Christopher May

April 12 + 13 [7:30PM]

Cinema Project welcomes guest curator Christopher May from TIE, The International Experimental Cinema Exposition. Founded in 2000 in Telluride, Colorado, TIE recognizes experimental and avant-garde film from around the world with a particular dedication to exploring the specific art of celluloid.

Curator and founder May travels to Portland with a selection of short films that challenge their very medium. Prolific filmmaker Paul Bartel, pokes fun at the act of filmmaking, acting, and the entertainment industry of the 1960s; while Charlotte Pryce's 2008 The Parable of the Tulip Painter and the Fly, shot on color reversal and hand-processed, is as poetic in its subjects and imagery as it is attentive to the actual film stock. From expanded cinema and reworked found footage pieces, to experimentation with color and lenses, this two night presentation surveys work from both past and present.

Designing Experience with Sound

The Haunted Garden is a sonic environment that participants control by their mere presence. It is a room that listens to the notes in your voice and uses them to compose music and change the color of the room. As the project progressed, further opportunities for control were implemented. An interactive kiosk gives users the ability to choose instruments and control sensitivity and reactivity parameters. The next step was to insert audio from other times and places by playing field recordings (e.g., baby yaks in Tibet, the 8-line in San Francisco), allowing the Haunted Garden to actively respond to the augmented sonic environments.

Simran will discuss the challenges of designing with sound, and how he developed “listening agents” who react and comment on sound in the environment. He will relate experiences—both as software developer and sound artist—and explore sound as a medium. Topics will include what is sound sculpture, what challenges were uncovered in creating it, whether the experience worked according to plan, the challenges in developing applications for these sorts of interactions, the unforeseen consequences resulting from initial forays into these kinds of devices, and how an interface based on sound might change how we relate to sound and sonic devices.

About the Speaker Simran Gleason is an artist and professional nerd. He started drawing the day after getting a master’s degree in computer science (symbolic and heuristic computation) from Stanford and drifted through many media before arriving at his current focus: making algorithms that make music. Among his more successful installations is Haunted Garden, a room that listens to you, finds the notes in your conversation, and uses them to compose an ambient sound and lightscape. He also did the generative music and light algorithms for SWARM, a gaggle of open source someday-autonomous spherical robots. His work has been shown in galleries in San Francisco and Palo Alto, as well as installations at Maker Fair, Yuri’s Night, Coachella, and the special olympics of art: Burning Man. Kepler’s Orrery is his first iPhone app.

Electrogals 2010
Disjecta

Electrogals 2010 - Call & Response All Women - All Electronic

The concert will showcase female electronic music performers from Portland and the West Coast, featuring synthesists, sonic explorers, deep listeners, circuit benders, and beat manglers. The performances will cover a wide range of styles, from beat-heavy song forms to abstract noise-generated soundscapes. Some of the performances will also include the audience, in ways that will definitely surprise and delight - and no, there won't be any embarrassing sing-alongs. Probably.

About the Electrogals series

Although there is nothing inherently manly about creating or performing electronic music, the female electronic musician is something of a rare bird. Electrogals 2010 will be the fourth in this series of showcases for women who have immersed themselves in this art form.

The first Electrogals show happened in 1995 at Mills College in Oakland, when composer Heather Perkins gathered a group of female electronic musicians for a show at the Mills Concert Hall. In 2004, Heather put on another Electrogals concert as part of the Sound/Craft music series at the Portland Museum of Contemporary Craft. In the spring of 2008, Heather Perkins, Mary Wright and Christi Denton put on an Electrogals concert at Holocene, filling both stages with an amazing lineup.

All compositions for Electrogals 2010 will be written by Portland composer and performer Heather Perkins, and performed by an all-star roster of female electronic music performers.

RefreshPDX: Young At Art – The Generative Generation
Idealist

Designers and artists are discovering the power of combining their knowledge of patterns, space, and colors with code and frameworks. Not to make prettier websites, but to create art. Interactive and infinitely generative code art.

But fear not: though getting into programming can be incredibly intimidating, code art, is one path to coding that can be fun, easy, and instantly rewarding. John Brown will show you some frameworks and sites that will get you started making art quickly and easily.

Occasionally, a new discovery will come along that changes the way artists create. Pigments in antiquity or screen printing in the recent past have given artists a path to explore. Now computers, and the frameworks created for them, are hitting the sweet spot of ease of use and power. Code art is still in its infancy, and creative coding is the wild west. It’s all about exploring, layering, and trying new things. Any creative endeavor of the last 5000 years has a digital equivalent, and there are myriad digital art paths that have no physical analogue.

John Brown will show you how to get involved in creative coding. There is a great community locally he’ll introduce you to. He’ll also talk a bit on the history of creative coding, show you some of his work, and talk about the future of code art and how it fits into the greater art world.

When you leave, you’ll want to rush home and pick up a digital paintbrush and start making code art.

Hack day with uncontext.
Instrument

Let's get together again and made some art!

After the success of the TUIO Jams, we're going to try the same format for a different project.

uncontext., for the uninitiated, is a community art project that creates streams of constantly changing data that is publicly accessible. When you create something that uses the data as it streams live, it will move and update to the same heartbeat that is moving and updating every other creation using the data. So at the end of the day, we'll have a series of experiments and projects that are all pulsing to the same beat.

I'll even be releasing a new data stream at this event! When you attend, you can create in any way that makes sense to you:

  • Javascript/CSS/in the browser experiences
  • Processing and/or p5.js
  • PixelPusher (we'll have some you can play with!)
  • Unity
  • Bring your Arduino or Pi or Tessel
  • Anything that can connect to the internet!

The space is, as always, provided by the ineffable Instrument. We'll have coffee and lunch will be provided by the wonderful team at Codepen, as well as some swag both from sponsors and also generated and printed at the event!

If you want a quick intro to uncontext., here's a video of a 15 minute introduction presentation crammed into 5 minutes from a couple months ago.

Send John Brown a message if you have any questions!

BYTE ME 2012 - A Showcase of Technological Art
Launch Pad Gallery

2012 is a year filled with anticipation... Will our planet come to a sudden end? Will the world economy crumble? Will Obama get re-elected? Who knows? Does anyone care? BYTE ME, 2012 can take your mind off of all these difficult questions and perhaps even answer some of them for you.

The event showcases installations and artwork by Portland artists Libbey White, Donald Delmar Davis, Jonas Nash, and Cameron Adamez that highlight the use of technology in different ways.

The centerpiece is the world premiere of the installation T,E.D. (Transformations, Emotional Deconstruction), created by Sean Hathaway, with music by Carlos Severe Marcelin. This large work features 80 customized Teddy Ruxpin dolls wired together, delivering real-time emotional content from the internet based on the Emotion Wheel developed by the psychologist Robert Plutchik. The work uses speech engines and lighting to deliver a seamless and continuous conversation between the animated dolls who have had their motherboards replaced by the custom board designed for this piece by the creator. Interactive real-time input can also be done by the audience through text messaging or an on-site TED software application.

Exhibition opening—Abraham Fagolavitz: Frenetic
Museum of Modern Life

Abraham Fagolavitz is a figment of his own imagination living in the Tualatin Mountains with a workshop full of tools, piles of recycled and raw materials, and way too much time on his hands. Like the mockingbird’s song, his work is a mish-mash of whatever he finds interesting at the moment and, more often than not, holds no meaning other than it pleased him to make it.

Equilibrium: The Human Mash Up
Olympic Mills Commerce Center

Equilibrium: The Human Mash Up

RSVP: http://tinyurl.com/art-tech08 Read reviews of the first of three Mash Up events: http://tinyurl.com/yelpreview08

Featuring Live DJs Echoik & Frequency

Working Artists Network + Software Association of Oregon introduce Equilibrium: The Human Mash Up. In the spirit of disruptive ideas and breaking down barriers we ask, "How can art and technology and the synergy of the two address humanity's next evolutionary step?" Four categories of work will address these questions and collectively speak to the power of human ingenuity. We invite artistic and technological creators to submit their work that addresses human survival in an era of interspecies evolution, revolution, and devolution.

Art and technology are two words that for many represent vastly different worlds, and for generations have largely existed along parallel, yet non-convergent lines. But now the potential for unprecedented collaboration is here. Ever-evolving technologies allow us to share ideas across borders, both geographic and symbolic. Such potential for shared ideas has helped break down long standing silos that for generations inhibited expansive thought and human progression.

The lines are now blurred. Creators of all sorts now have public space to mutually ponder where we've been, where we are, and where we're going. By sharing once segregated perspectives, we can see the world through a different lens and evolve as a species like never before.

E= m4 humanity - Submissions will fall into one of four conceptual areas:

Momentum: captures the inertia and velocity of human innovation Maintenance: captures the drive for ecological and human preservation Multiplicity: captures the boundless potential of human convergence Mobility: captures the facilitation of human movement and idea exchange http://tinyurl.com/yelpreview08

Year-End Portland Area Game Development Interest Group Roundtable+Meetup

Hello everyone, it's that time again. Yep, it's the last PAGDIG of the year.

Pizza and beverages will be provided, feel free to bring stuff to eat/drink to share or bring a couple of bucks to offset pizza costs. But all of that is strictly optional.

The roundtable discussion this month:

Managing Time While Staying Productive and Inspired: How Creative Game Developers Get Work Done

Anyone who does game development (art, design, programming, music), whether they be a full-time indie/employee or a part-time dev or student/hobbyist knows there's several fine balances we have to maintain. We split time between finding inspiration and buckling down and getting things done. We split time between the work that we care about and well, Real Life. When does looking for inspiration become detrimental distraction? When does working for hours on end become hazardous and counterproductive?

Let's all talk about how we deal with this in our daily work: how we stay focused, how we stay excited, how we budget our time and attention. I think it would be pretty educational to share and compare notes on how we all as developers of all types actually split our time up and what kind of schedules we maintain.

See you all soon!

Workshop: Designing with Sound: Principles and Patterns for Products and Environments
Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA)

Instructor: Amber Case

Sound is one of the most commonly overlooked components in product design, even though it’s often the first way people interact with many products. When designers don’t pay enough attention to sound elements, customers are frequently left with annoying and interruptive results. This practical workshop covers several methods that product designers and managers can use to improve everyday interactions through an understanding and application of sound design.

Understand the place of sound in design, and how it can make a difference in your product

Learn key concepts in sound design, with patterns and principles you can use to improve user experience

Learn how to integrate sound design into a project

Use exercises to help evaluate sound design

We have a limited number of scholarships for our workshops. If you need an application, please send an email to [email protected] with your complete name and contact information.

If you need academic credits for the workshops, please contact [email protected].

Making Art Everyday

http://makingarteveryday.com/ is a great way to inspire you to draw or create art every day.

Lisa Bardot has shared a daily prompt similar to Inktober to give you ideas about what to create each day. If you plan to create for just 10 minutes a day it may start an inspiring journey that could lead to an entire life of creating. Making Art Every Day also has an online community on Instagram #makingarteveryday to share your work with friends.

In this Meetup, we'll plan to bring this to life in person. Bring your art supplies, sketchpads, or tablets and we'll create together. I'll have extra supplies if you need some.

Art Exhibit on Electronics Mining in Congo
SEA Change

Art Exhibit: Profane Relics--- An Ossuary of the Congo Mineral Wars, an installation by Ryan Burns

Opening Reception: Thursday, July 2 from 5-10pm Community Dinner + Dialogue: Saturday, July 11 from 5-7pm

Sea Change Gallery, 625 NW Everett, Gallery #110, Portland www.seagallery.wordpress.com

The installation presents “artifacts” of the past twenty years of war and mineral exploitation in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Partially unearthed artifacts of cultural disarticulation, corporately funded wars, crude hand-tools of small pit mining, skeletal traces of bush meat trade are jumbled together with discarded iPhones, blackberries and obsolete laptops.

But, the exhibit won't merely wallow in despair. In accordance with SEA Change Gallery's mandate of social and environmental change, the curators are organizing a public brainstorming discussion to look for sustainable solutions to the coltan addiction. The free event will include a Congolese dinner and encourage community dialogue. Speakers from Mercy Corps, Run for Congo Women, and "Apocalypse Found" author Casey Bush will share their knowledge about the conflict, discuss solutions they are helping implement, and brainstorm ways to take action.

Hunger: Springboard Social Innovation Forum
Urban Grind East

The Springboard Social Innovation Forum is a new monthly event designed to engage community members in solving local challenges with lasting solutions. This free event promises a mix of conversation, collaboration, and professional support for social venture launchers, all designed to help move good ideas into action.

This month's topic is "Hunger." Hear from gleaners, food educators, school gardeners, state offices, food security policy makers, nutritionists, CSAs and others who are feeding our neighbors---and feeding them well. Join this important conversation to learn where your work overlaps and supports this goal.

In conjunction with the forum, nine local artists have converted refrigerators into creative statements about hunger. Their provocative art installation opens Friday, November 7th from 6-8pm at the Urban Grind and will remain on display through the month of November.

"Financing the Good" Springboard Social Innovation Forum - FREE
Urban Grind East

With economic turmoil spreading from financial markets to local communities, it’s a tough season for raising funds to start or support good causes. Join us for this free event on December 10th to explore diverse ideas and new models for “financing the good.”

Panelists representing banking, angel investing, micro-philanthropy, and grant funding will discuss innovative approaches for funding social change that reflect shifts in the way their organizations do business. Specifically, they will highlight opportunities for "average" Portlanders to obtain funding for their social change projects and visions.

During the workshop segment, learn tips and tricks for obtaining one of Portland's community building or environmental grants, discover how community currency can fund social change, talk with a lawyer about how to apply for a 501(c)(3), learn how a social stock market generates seed funding for launching good ideas and how to implement "sustaining strategies."

Panelists: Mark Moffenbier, Shorebank Pacific Mark Holloway, Social Venture Partners Portland Amy Pearl, ChangeXchange Social Stock Market Joy Hunt, Vision into Action Grants

Workshops Angela Southwick, Neighbors West-Northwest Neighborhood Grants Emily Rice, Community Watershed Stewardship Program Environmental Grants Janelle Geddes, Metro Grants John Brown, Rooms for Peace Alan Rosenblith, Community Prosper, community currency Nancy Murray, Community Development Legal Clinic

The forum is sponsored by Portland-based nonprofit, Springboard Innovation. Springboard's mission is to launch community-led community change. The purpose of the forum is to empower "average" Portlanders with the resources and tools needed to take action to solve problems our society is facing.

Arts & Crafts Workshop
Virtual

Looking for some inspiration to get creative? How about joining others in a workshop to share and work on your creative ideas.

In this workshop, we'll spend time talking about ideas and working on art projects. Bring your art supplies, sewing kits, pottery equipment, cameras, sketchpads, or even digital if you prefer. If you're not sure what to create that day, we can try a daily prompt.

This will be our last virtually only meeting. We're looking to get started in person and keep virtual for anyone who cannot attend in person starting February 2022.

All families are welcome. Let's be inspired and create together!

Mondo Croquet World Championships, Mad Hatter Picnic and Face Covering Fashion Show
Westmoreland Park Sport Fields

It's Croquet, American Style with bowling balls and sledgehammers! This is our 23rd Annual Mondo Croquet World Championships and Mad Hatter Picnic ... updated for 2020 to include the Face Covering Fashion Show!

“The only difference between me and a madman is that I'm not mad.” – Salvador Dali

Voted Best of Portland in Willamette Week we've been keeping Portland Weird since before the Queen was in short pants.

There's nothing quite like the sound of a sledgehammer smacking a bowling ball as you roll towards the wicket. That and the lamentations of your slain opponents. Some of them were Zombies anyway.

What:

• Face coverings! Show off your best! Show your best presentation and bring home the prize.

• Bring a bowling ball and a sledgehammer. Don’t worry if you don’t have, we’ve got plenty of extras to loan out

• You’ll enjoy yourself more if you’re dressed appropriately in lawn whites, or Mad Hatter gear, or simply appropriately inappropriate. Peruse some of our photos for ideas.

• Bring along something to share for the picnic and something cold to drink. …and you might want a chair.

Would you like to share your art with other talented artists? Join us on Zoom for an hour to collaborate on our favorite art projects. I'll start us off by sharing my favorite paintings in my sketchbook. I can give a brief history of how I learned the fundamentals including shadows, perspective, composition, construction, proportions, gestures, color theory, and anatomy.

Whatever time we have left, others are welcome to share their art projects. We'll even do a Zoom poll to vote on upcoming topic ideas.
