Inside the Developer's Studio, with special guest Tony Falco
Portland Code School

Starting this month, Portland Code School will host a monthly public event called "Inside the Developer's Studio." Taking a note from the popular, similarly-named TV show (Inside the Actor's Studio), Cris Kelly, Director of PCS, interviews a dev, or someone in Portland's tech scene, to get to know the guest both personally and professionally. Through the interview, we hear their stories and experiences; we learn from their mistakes and successes; and we learn more about ourselves and our community, as we discover how they arrived in Portland's rousing tech arena, and how they're contributing to it.

This month's guest is Tony Falco, CEO and co-founder of Orchestrate. A database veteran and serial entrepreneur, Tony built Orchestrate after noticing hundreds of companies unnecessarily duplicate database infrastructure time and again. Previously, he co-founded Basho Technologies, creators of the NoSQL database Riak, where he served as COO. Prior, he was VP of Product Management and Technical Services at Akamai Technologies, which he helped grow to an annual revenue of over $200 million.

Spread the word! Invite your friends and colleagues! Bring your questions and your lunch into our spacious classroom over Friday's lunch hour, Noon to 1pm. Q&A opportunities at the end of the interview.

Deep Learning (DL) is a fast growing and exciting sub-field of machine learning and AI that has recently made extraordinary advancements in many applications such as image recognition, natural language processing, speech transcription, classification and forecasting.

This 2 day introductory course focuses on giving you a firm foundation of deep learning techniques using a combination of presentations and hands-on exercises. The presentations introduce essential background and theory and allow for questions and discussions. And the exercises use Jupyter notebooks with Keras and Tensorflow to show you the essentials of building and training neural nets.

Deep learning can transform any industry. This course will help you find creative ways to apply it to yours.

You'll learn:

  • The fundamentals of deep learning including
    • how to build dense / fully connected networks
    • how to use convolutional layers
    • when to use recurrent LSTM/GRU networks
    • how to choose an optimizer and loss function
    • when to use dropout and batch normalization
    • how to prepare training and test data
    • and more
  • How to navigate the options and decisions for different model architectures.

  • You have a deep curiosity and interest in learning about machine learning.
  • You want to understand and work with cutting edge deep learning approaches with complex data.

Note: You don't need to be a math wizard - this is a hands on practical class. Though knowing more is always helpful, deep understanding of linear algebra and and calculus are not necessary. We will cover all the math basics necessary to get started in the class.

Topics

Over the 2 days we will cover

  1. Deep Learning Introduction and Overview
  2. Dense NNs and Keras
  3. Essential Theory
  4. Convolutional NNs

Change Your Career, Change Your Life :: Alchemy Info Session & Graduate Panel
Alchemy Code Lab

Wondering about a career in tech? There are many paths into tech and many types of people too. The volume of suggestions and advice can be confusing and contradictory. Come to our event on September 26th, and find out from our staff and grads:

  • What are the biggest motivators for people transitioning into tech
  • What jobs and roles exist and what are the associated career trajectories
  • What it takes to get hired in tech coming from a non-traditional background
  • How to leverage your prior work experiences and career skills to land a role in tech

If your current job isn’t truly enjoyable, lacks challenge or meaning, or you crave more respect and financial reward, then this is a great event for you to explore the opportunities a career in tech can provide. Our professional software development training program attracts students ready to transition to a rewarding career they love. We are the only code school in Portland specializing in placing people directly into software developer and engineering role, not internships. Join us as we share our secrets on what makes our students successful.

Agenda: 6:00 - 6:15: Networking with food and drink 6:15 - 6 45: Intro to our program and what a future career in coding looks like 6:45 - 7:30: Graduate Q&A Panel

We’re here to answer your questions, and look forward to meeting you!
