Equitable Networking Workshop
Garden Space

Why are we doing this?

The goal of this workshop is to provide a refreshing approach to networking. We coach individuals to confidently navigate networking events, ensuring they represent themselves well, understand expectations, and leverage their key skills to achieve their goals. Nobody gives proper training on how to approach these events, making it an oversight in our community. We want to change that! This 90-minute training is the first step in understanding how you can be and what you can do at networking events. I highly encourage those who frequent events to come to this training too. You experts can also come out of this with a new fun approach to the next event you go to.

Who is it for?

We aim to have people in leadership roles to people just starting out in their industries attend this workshop. With the intention to learn from one another no matter what experience level they are at. There is a lot to learn when we come together with intention and skill-sharing practices. An equitable networker seeks diverse gatherings and welcomes opportunities to share.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Active engagement and opportunities to move around (no more feeling glued to your seats) Diverse interactions with a variety of attendees (up to 80 people) Access to tools facilitating meaningful connections throughout the entire workshop (including improv exercises and Toastmaster frameworks) A welcoming atmosphere where networking feels natural

Each person attending will be guided through our education and facilitation training to encourage each and every one of you to leave feeling more in control of your place on the networking floor.

You will leave feeling cheerful, lightweight, and ready for more!

Event Details: Date: Wednesday, May 22nd Time: 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM Location: 205 NW 4th Ave, Portland, OR 97209 Don't miss this opportunity to learn and grow in your networking skills. Reserve your spot today!

XOXO 2024
through Revolution Hall

Yeah, no kidding! We’re bringing XOXO back this August 22–24 to Revolution Hall in Portland, one last time.

After the last XOXO in 2019, we had decided to start wrapping things up, planning for one final festival in September 2020. Then obviously the pandemic arrived, derailing our plans entirely, and turns out, postponing them for almost four years.

Since 2019, XOXO sat unfinished in our imaginations, while we’ve watched the world continue to become a more challenging place for independent artists and creators. Many in our community are out of work, crushed by widespread layoffs across the media, games, and tech industries. It feels like many technology companies and platforms are doing everything they can to hurt artists instead of supporting them.

More than ever, we need community and solidarity, to hear each other’s stories, to experience and share our work with each other, to come together and organize to make things better.

Demolicious - May 2024
UpStart Collective Westside

UPDATE: MAY Demolicious will be at the new westside UpStart Collective location!

::::::: Applications for May are STILL OPEN! Please use the form below to apply to pitch.:::::::::::

Demolicious is back! This monthly pitch event brings together founders and the community to learn about what is being built here and around Portland.

How this all works: If you are a founder, you will apply to pitch here. Don't worry. "Apply" simply means you want to pitch, but there's no real competitive process to be accepted. We just want to see what you're working on before we put you in front of a room full of people.

You will be given 3 minutes to pitch at the event.

The audience will be given a number to text and vote for their favorite one. The one with the most votes will go home with the Demolicious Championship belt.

The belt is not for you to keep as you will have to come back and "defend" it. However, you will be allowed to put your startup sticker (if applicable) on the belt for all to see and to live on forever in infamy!

We will post the projects/companies that will be pitching a week prior to the event. Which means you have until then to fill out the form.

Teams Pitching: TBA

Will you be the next founder to pitch!?!

No agenda, no pitch, no bullshit. As always, come geek out, network, and have a good time. Booze and food is on somebodies company card (to a limit). If group size demands it reservations will be made, otherwise check the bar area or a hostess for the group.

Starting in Seattle it's been a lot of fun over the years. The group has defined some "regulars" but we continue to host a diversity of interesting folks from all over the industry in all types of engineering roles. Locations will be dynamic throughout 2016 so keep an eye on that when registering.

Beers with Engineers
10 Barrel

A monthly gathering for Portland area tech junkies. More specifically, those focused on data, emerging technology, and general IT topics. Industry vets, IT pros, nerds, geeks, tech philosoraptors, whatever.... Whether 5 or 50 this is an awesome opportunity to get together and talk shop, learn from peers, or just have some beers and a good time.

No management, No selling, No recruiting, No problems. Talking to people about your product(s) or career networking is fine but people "leeching" on the attendance isn't cool so don't do it. Industry folks with expense cards typically cover festivities but this isn't a "sponsored" event and we don't intend to turn BwE into "powerpoint parties". Venue will be dynamic alternating between locations and if group size demands we'll book a location to support.

If you're new to the group or haven't been out in a while we're a pretty dynamic crowd and always have a lot of fun.

Personal Telco Project Birthday and New Node Work Party
16475 SW Cynthia Street, Beaverton Oregon

Come celebrate Personal Telco's 10th birthday, but plugging in another node!

http://www.personaltelco.net/~russell/the-beginning.txt

Ten years ago to the day, Adam Shand, inspired by a slashdot article on Consume.net in London, wrote a message to the Portland Linux Users Group mailing list. That message got Personal Telco off the ground, and it's been flying (sometimes eating some pine cones) ever since. Come help it gain some more altitude and soar with you into the future!

We'll be plugging in a new rooftop node out in the depths of Beaverton at about 12 noon tomorrow. It shouldn't take too long, so don't be too late or we'll be all done when you get there.

Where: 16475 SW Cynthia Street, Beaverton OR 97007

When: Noon, Sunday, November 28, 2010 until 1 or 2pm

We are going to be attaching another of the Ubiquiti Bullet M2HP's to a 5 foot mast on the roof, attached to a WgtCab inside. Come join the fun, watch, learn, participate!

Ask not what free wifi can do for you, ask what you can do for free wifi!

CAT barcamp
1900 SW 4th avenue, Portland Oregon 97201

CAT BarCamp is a free unconference hosted by the Computer Action Team at Portland State University every year. BarCamps are free conferences where the people who show up on the day of decide what the conference is about. No scheduled talks are planned beforehand by the organizers, making the range of talks and topics covered each year entirely unique. Timeslots are posted in an accessible place and the attendants are given (fairly) free reign to post and choose which talks they would like to attend or give. We only ask that topics be respectful and PG-rated. The CAT at PSU is an ops training organization that has secured the venue and is organizing the event. We expect many job-hungry students skilled in development, computer science, operations, and everything else to be in attendance at this event and we want to enable as many connections as possible. Because the CAT is a tech organization and has ties to the larger tech community, many speakers will likely give tech-oriented talks.

Lunch will be provided.

Title: Modernizing Traditional Security: How Containerization Makes Security and Compliance Easier

Presenter: Keith Mokris, Sr. Product Marketing Manager at Twistlock

As containers become the commonplace method for delivering and deploying applications, organizations are taking a “lift-and-shift” approach to migrating their existing applications. In this presentation, Keith will discuss a non-profit that provides environmental science and engineering oversight to some of the world’s largest civil waterworks projects and their shift to containers. This organization previously relied on a critical 14-year old app that models storm surge. The move to containers for this application delivered immediate benefits, making it easier to manage vulnerabilities, ensure regulatory compliance, and provide runtime defense. Throughout this session, we’ll break down the security advantages of containers relative to traditional architectures using this real life app as an example.

Main takeaways:

Learn the technical differences between containers and traditional architectures around vulnerability management, compliance, and runtime security How containerization helps move security upstream in the development lifecycle and why that’s such an important benefit Why containers make compliance instantly easier, by enabling organizations to find and correct problems early on, enforce settings, and automatically block non-compliant configurations How the predictable nature of containers enables a new approach to runtime defense that improved efficiency and scale by reducing human security management effort Lessons learned from a real world organization’s experience migrating a mission critical app to containers and how impacted their security approach Bio: In his role at Twistlock, Keith tells the story around how enterprises can leverage the company’s cloud native cybersecurity platform to secure their modern applications. Previously, Keith was in charge of product marketing at NowSecure, helping enterprises integrate mobile application security testing into their development pipelines and identify critical vulnerabilities via penetration testing. In his free time, he is a landscape and street photographer.

The Journey from ER Modeler to Data Scientist + The Basics of Text Analytics
200 SW Market Street

We will be talking about what data science is and isn’t, with particular focus on the skills that a data scientist is expected to bring to bear on a problem. We will discuss the educational and skill expectations of a data scientist and how those relate to the skills we’ve developed as ER Modelers.

Going by job descriptions, data science can easily read like “jack of all trades, and master of them all too”. How do we break that down into something more reasonably achievable?

  • What is data science and what is a data scientist? What do they do?
  • Do ER Modelers make good Data Scientists?
  • Are the skill sets complementary?

And then we’ll look at some of the basics of text analytics, or extracting information from unstructured text. This won’t be nearly enough detail to make anybody a practitioner, but we will see several of the basic techniques at work and develop a functional mental model of some of the techniques. By the time we’re done, you’ll have been exposed to concepts like:

  • Term-Document Matrix (TDM)
  • Tokenizing
  • Stopword removal (Stopping)
  • Stemming
  • And as a bonus – we’ll see some Python code for extracting noun phrases

Bring your questions around these topics and let’s get into them.

Our Speaker

Asoka Diggs is a Data Scientist with Intel Corp. in Hillsboro, OR. He has about 15 years of experience in a variety of data management disciplines, including database administration, ER modeling, ETL development, and data architecture. He has recently transitioned to analysis of data by completing the MS Predictive Analytics degree from Northwestern University. It turns out that there IS something even more fun than ER modeling, and he now spends most of his work time practicing his analytic modeling skills, and teaching others how to participate and contribute to predictive analytic projects.
