The Journey from ER Modeler to Data Scientist + The Basics of Text Analytics

    200 SW Market Street

We will be talking about what data science is and isn’t, with particular focus on the skills that a data scientist is expected to bring to bear on a problem. We will discuss the educational and skill expectations of a data scientist and how those relate to the skills we’ve developed as ER Modelers.

Going by job descriptions, data science can easily read like “jack of all trades, and master of them all too”. How do we break that down into something more reasonably achievable?

    • What is data science and what is a data scientist? What do they do?
    • Do ER Modelers make good Data Scientists?
    • Are the skill sets complementary?

And then we’ll look at some of the basics of text analytics, or extracting information from unstructured text. This won’t be nearly enough detail to make anybody a practitioner, but we will see several of the basic techniques at work and develop a functional mental model of some of the techniques. By the time we’re done, you’ll have been exposed to concepts like:

    • Term-Document Matrix (TDM)
    • Tokenizing
    • Stopword removal (Stopping)
    • Stemming
    • And as a bonus – we’ll see some Python code for extracting noun phrases

Bring your questions around these topics and let’s get into them.

    Our Speaker

Asoka Diggs is a Data Scientist with Intel Corp. in Hillsboro, OR. He has about 15 years of experience in a variety of data management disciplines, including database administration, ER modeling, ETL development, and data architecture. He has recently transitioned to analysis of data by completing the MS Predictive Analytics degree from Northwestern University. It turns out that there IS something even more fun than ER modeling, and he now spends most of his work time practicing his analytic modeling skills, and teaching others how to participate and contribute to predictive analytic projects.

RESCHEDULED: Advanced Data Visualization - Portland DAMA

    200 SW Market Street

Please note that this DAMA PDX below has been rescheduled due to a late breaking speaker conflict.

Join us instead on August 4th to hear Asoka Diggs speaking on being a Data Scientist on August 4th. See our damapdx.org site for more details and to register for August 4th

    ORIGINAL PRESENTATION:
The world produces more than 2.5 exabytes of data every day. There is just too much information out there and traditional reports using tabs, rows and columns do not paint the whole picture any longer.

Visualization is one key approach to gaining insight from this mountain of data. Advanced Visualizations Platforms have enabled the use of more dynamic and interactive business graphics, such as real-time dashboards and charts that update automatically as the data changes. It enables knowledge workers to see the trends and patterns (along with gaps and outliers) in the data that are not as easily identified in rows and columns of numbers. Even Data Scientists are leveraging advanced visualizations tools to explore, understand and communicate insights, along with the actions that need to be taken.

In this session, we will explore how advanced visualization tools are being utilized in the era of big data to draw valuable business insights and we will also delve into some of the predominant data visualization tools being used by Data Scientists.

The Vital Role of Data Managers in E–Discovery and Information Governance

    200 SW Market Street

Data volume is exploding. While there may be tremendous value to the business hidden within this information, it also creates risk and additional costs which need to be managed. Your legal department is faced with additional challenges, as they now are required to search through all of this electronically stored information (ESI), which can be on the order of terabytes or even petabytes in order to find the relevant facts of litigation in which it is involved. Your colleagues need data managers like yourself to help identify, store, collect and process data that may be potentially responsive to their cases.

In this session, learn how your role fits into the information governance and e-discovery processes and how you can add immediate value to help advance your career.

Joy, Inc - How We Built a Workplace People Love

    200 SW Market Street

The Portland Chapter of the DAMA Data Management User Group is dedicated to delivering thought provoking data-centric presentations that will make you more successful in your job.

This month, we are bringing in Richard Sheridan, the CEO and "Chief Storyteller" at Menlo Innovations from Michigan to the Propeller room at the 200 Market Building.

    Registration is required: http://www.damapdx.org/

    Overview:

Every year, thousands of visitors come from around the world to visit Menlo Innovations, a small software company in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They make the trek not to learn about technology but to witness a radically different approach to company culture.

CEO and "Chief Storyteller" Rich Sheridan removed the fear and ambiguity that typically make a workplace miserable. His own experience in the software industry taught him that, for many, work was marked by long hours and mismanaged projects with low-quality results. There has to be a better way.

With joy as the explicit goal, Sheridan and his team changed everything about how the company was run. They established a shared belief system that supports working in pairs and embraces making mistakes, all while fostering dignity for the team.

The results blew away all expectations. Menlo has won numerous growth awards and was named an Inc. magazine "audacious small company". It has tripled its physical office three times and produced products that dominate markets for its clients.

    Speaker Bio:

From kid programmer in 1971 to Forbes cover story in 2003, "outlier" Richard Sheridan(U-M grad BS Computer Science '80, MS Computer Engineering '82) has never shied from challenges, opportunities nor the limelight. While his focus has always been around technology, his passion is actually process, teamwork and organizational design, with one inordinately popular goal: the business value of joy! Sheridan is an avid reader and historian, and his software design and development team at Menlo Innovations didn't invent a new culture, but copied an old one ... Edison's Menlo Park New Jersey lab. Henry Ford's recreation of the Menlo Park Lab in Greenfield Village was a childhood inspiration!

Some call it agile, some call it lean ... Sheridan and his team call it joyful. And it produces results ... business and otherwise. Five Inc. magazine revenue growth awards, invites to the White House, speaking engagements around the nation, numerous articles and culture awards and so much interest they are doing a tour a day of the Menlo Software Factory™. Sheridan was recently enlisted by Portfolio at Penguin to write a book about all he has learned about the effect of a culture focused on Joy. Rich is writing in his "spare time”.
