The workshop, Failing Fast for Women, explores the relationship between gender socialization, avoidance of risk taking, and the internalization of failure. It provides a number of skills and strategies to increase risk taking and avoid personalizing failure, and is suitable for all female-identified folks.

The event is on November 16th from 9 to 5 at the Nightwood Society. It’s created and hosted by the Alveare Collective, a community of professional women in Portland who are working to rethink risk-taking in the workplace and personal realms.. I would add that I’ve been blessed to meet some amazing people along the way. I came here courtesy of Intel, where I worked for some 17 years, and where I had the good fortune to reinvent myself several times: from motherboards to software-video & telecom, from Intel Labs, to venture investing and internal startups, I did everything I could to try new things, soak it all in, and become versatile. After leaving Intel in 2006, I spent 10 years at ADP Dealer Services (now known as CDK Global) where we built software for Automotive Retailers & OEMs. Last October – just about 1 year ago – I had the amazing good fortune to join NAVEX Global, who provides the world’s most comprehensive Ethics & Compliance SaaS platform – and has the inspiring mission of helping organizations protect their people, reputation, and bottom line. Our mission really speaks to me because, as a Boy Scout Leader for 25 years, I care a lot about integrity and being a servant leader. In addition to networking relentlessly along the way, I’ve also followed my passion in Product Management and created ProductCamp Portland in 2012. We’re running our 7th camp in March 2018. Introducing "Placemaking in the Digital Age"

Amplified, an experience design and technology innovation studio in Portland focused on imagining the communities of the future, is launching a new series called “Placemaking in the Digital Age” to galvanize a community around this emerging design discipline. In this series, we will discuss how we can build meaningful places where digital and physical experiences complement each other, examine design processes and methodologies, and examine the nature of design teams that create these experiences.

Join us on Thursday, August 23 as we kick off this series. Gregg Sloan, Founder and Chief Creative Officer and Janani Vasudev, Director of Experience Design at Amplified will introduce the series with a talk about what placemaking is, as well as discuss their work in the area. The 45-minute talk will be followed by a Q&A, with plenty of time in the beginning and at the end to network. Complimentary refreshments will be provided.

The end of August means that Fall is around the corner. Are you switching careers this season? Are you looking to get into the tech industry for the first time? This month, pdxFLIT is taking a break from presentations to host a special workshop about professional development! We'll be partnering with our friends from Intel to provide a two-hour event featuring a variety of activities. There will be opportunities to turn strengths into interview stories, participate in resume reviews, practice elevator pitches, and practice answering tricky behavioral interview questions. If you're searching for a job, take a night off to work on these valuable skills!

Workshop events will begin at 6 PM. Our event facilitators will cover introductions and elevator pitches, resumés, authentic interviewing, the STAR method, and more! There will be a variety of activities to help you practice these skills so that you can put your best foot forward when you land an interview at your dream company. He's currently a Principal at the Liberty Advisor Group, where he works in advanced supply chain analytics. In his previous role, he was the Senior Predictive Consultant at Corios; where he developed predictive models and scorecards, forecast trends, identify uncertainties, and assign the ideal strategies to maximize performance. Robot Operating System (ROS) Development - Overview Intel’s RealSense Depth Sensors
Axiom Electronics

Dave Shinsel will provide an overview of available depth sensors, and a deep-dive on Intel’s RealSense depth sensors, including a new sensor that adds visual SLAM capability. He will discuss how these sensors work in conjunction with Computer Vision technologies for various robotics applications, including object avoidance, person interaction, object recognition and localization, and SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping). Further the talk will cover how to access these capabilities via their ROS wrappers.

Dave Shinsel is the Lead Robotics Architect in Intel’s Perceptual Computing Group. He has an extensive background in all levels of robotics, with particular focus on vision and sensing technologies. Prior to this role, Dave was the Director of the Intel® RealSense SDK, created and led the Intel® Graphics Performance Analyzers, and led development of the graphics drivers for the Apple MacBook* Air. In his “spare time,” Dave has been building robots for fifteen years. He has received a "Backyard Genius Award" from Popular Mechanics magazine, won a number of robot competitions, and competed on TV in the Syfy Channel’s Robot Combat League, where he and his daughter (also an engineer at Intel) won the $100,000 grand prize with their 7 foot, 9 inches tall, fighting robot, "Crash." Dave is well known in the Maker community for his sophisticated 4 foot tall humanoid robot, Loki.

In this half-day workshop, a series of presenters will bring tools every HR leader should have in their toolkit and executive should hear.

Session 1 (8:00 – 9:00 a.m.): From Start-Up to High-Growth: Shaping a Culture for Success The shift from a start-up culture has caused many promising companies to stumble. EthicsPoint president and CEO David Childers will present the step-by-step process his company took to consciously reconstruct its corporate culture. This two-year-long project has helped EthicsPoint exceed growth and revenue expectations and position itself for international expansion.

Session 2 (9:00 – 10:00 a.m.) Turning the Job They Have Into the Job They Want For many companies the downturn has stalled growth, which in turn has left employees feeling “stuck” in their jobs. This dissatisfaction can be especially difficult in technology companies where employees are attracted to working fast paced growth and changing environments. Via Skype, Dr. Jane Dutton from University of Michigan will share the Job Crafting Exercise, a low cost, powerful tool that the Center for Positive Organizational Scholarship has developed.

Session 3 (10:15 – 11:15 a.m.) Performance Appraisals – The Next Act Few issues in management stir up more controversy than performance appraisal.

There are many reputable sources - researchers, management commentators, psychometricians - who have expressed doubts about the validity and reliability of the performance appraisal process. Some have even suggested that the process is so inherently flawed that it may be impossible to perfect it. At the other extreme, there are many strong advocates of performance appraisal. Some view it as potentially the most crucial aspect of organizational life (Lawrie, 1990). Dr. Steve Hunt will talk about how the performance management process is shifting from an administrative process used to justify pay decisions to a forward focused tool for enabling business execution.
