nodePDX is a free two day Node.js conference for the Portland/Pacific Northwest Javascript community. All node, all day. Oh yeah.

Join us for the first meeting of the Portland Node users group. We'll have food, code, and a lovely presentation about Terraformer from Esri by Jerry Sievert.

What is Terraformer? A library for converting geographic data between different mapping formats and GeoJSON.". But it's more than that, it's a Geo-Toolkit that works in node as well as in the browser via AMD or CommonJS, providing tools for reading and writing from multiple geo formats, converting to and from web mercator, an RTree index, and some simple polygon tools.

• Andrew Winterman has recently been working on simple-scuttle based on Dominic Tarr's scuttlebutt and will share the fun we can have with it as well as the challenges that came with creating it.

• Jacob Groundwater created NodeOS, an attempt to use npm as a full-fledged operating system package manager. Attendees who have access to Docker during the talk will get to publish and test modules on their local NodeOS instances. Dave will discuss what idealist.org has learned about designing React components, specifically techniques for promoting simplicity, reuse, statelessness, and separation of concerns, and for dealing with asynchrony.

Isomorphic Webpack Hot Module Replacement Boilerplate (Eric O'Connell)

• Do you want to serve fully-rendered HTML from your React application?
• Do you want near-instant feedback in your browser as soon as you edit your React components?
• How about CSS?

This talk will give the starting point for a very nice dev environment using the webpack Hot Module Replacement feature. It will include a (trivial) Express app that renders the entire React component hierarchy which will then be hydrated on the client. Variations shown will include serving API requests out of the same app, and shared client/server routing.

Our Meetup provides an opportunity to "Show and Tell" followed by a feedback and Q&A. You'll have the opportunity to share with our channels such as Meetup, GitHub, YouTube, and Facebook to connect with more passionate people.

The second half of our session we'll collaborate on new topics. The winner wins an award for the most interesting topic and the opportunity to share in an upcoming session.

NodeBots Day is world wide event where people learn how to control the physical world with JavaScript. The focus of NodeBots Day is on sharing and enjoying each other's company and JavaScript - lots of JavaScript.

This year PDXNode and Women Who Code Portland are joining forces to host an awesome NodeBots Day in Portland. We want you to leave with the satisfaction of making something awesome!

Continuing in the spirit of the international NodeBots Day event: this is not a hackathon. It's about spending a day in an amazing workshop with good people and tinkering, hacking and generally putting tools where hardware would rather you didn't. Women Who Code Portland will be providing some hardware at the event, but feel free to bring your own!

We are very beginner and help is available. There will be seasoned Nodesters ready and available to help anyone with questions or advice throughout the event. NodeBots also has a online chat community where you can connect to other hackers around the world who are also exploring.

OWASP Top 10 for JavaScript Developers

The OWASP Top 10 is a powerful awareness document for web application security. It represents a broad consensus about the most critical security risks to web applications.

With the release of the OWASP TOP 10 2017 we saw new issues rise as contenders of most common issues in the web landscape. Much of the OWASP documentation displays issues, and remediation advice/code relating to Java, C++, and C#; however not much relating to JavaScript. JavaScript has drastically changed over the last few years with the release of Angular, React, and Vue, alongside the popular use of NodeJS and its libraries/frameworks. This talk will introduce you to the OWASP Top 10 explaining JavaScript client and server-side vulnerabilities.

Lewis Ardern is a Senior Security Consultant at Synopsys. His primary areas of expertise are in web security and security engineering. Lewis enjoys creating and delivering security training to various types of organizations and institutes in topics such as web and JavaScript security. He is also the founder of the Leeds Ethical Hacking Society and has helped develop projects such as bXSS (https://github.com/LewisArdern/bXSS) and SecGen (https://github.com/cliffe/secgen).

https://www.freecodecamp.org/ is a great online resource for learning how to code. It gives you step by step challenges with example lessons to code. There are even hints and video tutorials if you get stuck.

The only missing component is how to share your achievements with friends and get inspired by others. That's where Knowledge Mavens can help. Join us to stay motivated to complete the boot camp. We're holding a two-hour workshop to work on challenges and share our progress.

Welcome to the PDXNode Hack Night!

What is a PDXNode Hack Night?

PDXNode Hack Nights are your opportunity to enjoy a low-pressure JavaScript-centric environment where you shouldn't feel like you're supposed to do anything. First and foremost–just come and enjoy yourself. The night is yours: hang, hack, learn, or do whatever you’re interested in doing. 🙌

Depending on the size and interests of our attending group, we have various paths the night could go, and may or may not attempt some of the following:

Map Ctrl-H into Hackerspace Regions

The hackerspace will be mapped into 'regions', and you can feel free to gravitate towards whichever one suits your interest!

• A place for beginners who want to get going with node for the first time. • A place for people who want to work on their own projects (eg. projects you want to do outside of work, but need to find the time). • A place for people to just hang out and connect. • A place for people to work on projects in groups!

'Unconference'-style Team Hacks

For team-hackers, we'll have a board up and sticky-notes available available at the beginning of the night. Anyone can feel free to write the name and/or description of something they'd like to hack on with other people–and others who're interested can feel free to go to that region and join in!

End of Night Show and Tell

There will be a list available to write your name, or team's name down on to give a quick show and tell of your projects at the end of the night. We're pumped to see what you've been working on!

The CascadiaJS conference is taking place on Nov 3 & 4. There are two ways to attend:

Some details about the in-person event: - Must be vaccinated at least two weeks prior to conference. - Watch Party at the OMSI. - Catering (coffee, snacks and lunch) - Opening and Closing after parties (7pm+ PT)

The closing party with be at Voicebox SE. We have the entire place to ourselves, so come and relax in a safe space and have fun!
