TuesdayMar 17 2020Monkeys in the Machine (Machine Learning)–
VacasaFood, learning, sharing and encouragement with the fabulous PHP Community!
This month Eric Mann presents Monkeys in the Machine
Can a million monkeys given a million typewriters produce the collected works of Shakespeare? Considering the ethical concerns of forcing monkeys to write, paired with the sheer mess of that many mammals in one location, we might never know. Or will we?
Thanks to the wonders of modern computing, it's possible to simulate monkeys emulating the Bard. Leveraging techniques like genetic algorithms, we can build a system that approximates a monkey armed with a typewriter. Digitally.
It's a fun exercise to prove a thought experiment, but also a powerful technical approach to leverage machine learning and rudimentary AI in various places. Together, we'll breed digital monkeys and show both how they can be used to answer the aforementioned Shakespearean question as well as produce generative results to more practical problems.

Women Who Code Portland will be providing some hardware at the event, but feel free to bring your own!
We are very beginner and help is available. There will be seasoned Nodesters ready and available to help anyone with questions or advice throughout the event. NodeBots also has a online chat community where you can connect to other hackers around the world who are also exploring.

ThursdayJun 7 2018Hack the Dot–
VacasaHack the Dot is a two-hour hackathon where code school students, working developers, marketing and design professionals, and anyone else interested in the Web come together to build ideas. Use your skills in web development, storytelling, and creative ideation to build a humorous (maybe even functional!) product quickly, while meeting people in your tech/startup community.
How does it work?
At a domain-driven hackathon, all of the teams are given a single premium domain name at the beginning of the event. All teams then have two hours to come up with a product inspired by that domain, fueled by food and beverage. Whichever team builds the most creative and funny idea for the domain wins!
Prizes include the premium domain name itself, plus swag from our sponsors!
Do I need to bring a team?
Nope! Teams are formed randomly at the beginning.
