Rise of the Indie Web

What happens when an online service you use freezes your account, loses your data, or goes out of business? Have you ever used a service by a company that suddenly went under, stranding your data? What happened to the Internet in 2003?Do you own your own identity or do you sharecrop? Who owns your data and why? Case will talk about data ownership, identity and the Indie Web, a movement that is taking back ownership of one's own identity and data instead of sharecropping on 3rd party websites.

This is the 3rd event in a series of free monthly FutureTalks from disruptive Developers, innovative Technologists and world-changing Creatives. Doors open at 5:30p for food and drinks, and the presentation will begin right at 6p.

DevOps Patterns Distilled:

Implementing The Needed Practices In Four Practical Steps

Organizations employing DevOps practices such as Google, Amazon, Facebook, Etsy and Twitter are routinely deploying code into production hundreds, or even thousands, of times per day, while providing world-class availability, reliability and security. In contrast, most organizations struggle to do releases more than every nine months.

The authors of the upcoming “DevOps Cookbook” have been studying high performing organizations since 1999, and we capture and codify how these high-performing organizations achieve this fast flow of work through Product Management and Development, through QA and Infosec, and into IT Operations. By doing so, other organizations can now replicate the extraordinary culture and outcomes enabling their organization to scale and win in the marketplace.

The goal of the DevOps Cookbook is to help accelerate DevOps adoption, increase the success of DevOps initiatives, and lower the activation energy required for DevOps transformations to start and finish.

This is the 6th event in a series of free monthly FutureTalks from disruptive Developers, innovative Technologists and world-changing Creatives. Networking begins at 5:30, with free food and drinks. The presentation will begin right at 6p.

Please join and RSVP via our new Meetup group HERE

He has worked with some of the top Internet companies on improving deployment flow and increasing the rigor around IT operational processes. In 2007, ComputerWorld added Gene to the “40 Innovative IT People Under The Age Of 40” list, and was given the Outstanding Alumnus Award by the Department of Computer Sciences at Purdue University for achievement and leadership in the profession.

How the Internet Works

An introduction to the Internet's structure and protocols through fun experiments from the Python perspective.

We'll use Python libraries like Scapy and Twisted to explore:

  • What happens under the hood when you type python.org into your browser bar and hit enter
  • What data you reveal about yourself as you surf the Web
  • How coffee shop Internet access works
  • How to propose marriage on your local network via ARP cache poisoning

By the end of this talk you'll:

  • Understand the core Internet protocols and how design decisions from the early Internet impact us today
  • Have exposure to popular Python networking libraries
  • Think sniffing your own wireless traffic is a fun way to spend a Saturday morning

This is the second event in a series of free monthly FutureTalks from disruptive Developers, innovative Technologists and world-changing Creatives. Doors open at 5:30p for food and drinks, and the presentation will begin right at 6p.

An exploration of the purpose of rules ...

We're iconoclasts who reject arbitrary constraints yet long for understandable, predictable, changeable applications. We want code that follows rules yet we refuse to let rules to get in our way. We're deeply attached to the little rules that help get things done (No trailing whitespace! Indent using two spaces!) and despise the big, complicated ones that impose one-size-fits-all straitjackets on otherwise sane programming problems.

This talk proposes 5 'little' rules for writing object-oriented code. These rules are determinedly simple yet produce code that experts love and novices can be trusted to change; they fill the space between anarchy and order with practical, common sense. The rules guide without impeding, help without hindering and constrain without binding, and let you create applications that are easy to change and fun to work their whole life long.

This is the 4th event in a series of free monthly FutureTalks from disruptive Developers, innovative Technologists and world-changing Creatives. Doors open at 5:30p for food, drinks and networking. The presentation will begin right at 6p.

Please RSVP via Eventbrite HERE

Sandi Metz is a programmer. In the past 30+ years she has written innumerable applications, many of which are still running today. Dealing with long lived applications has left her deeply biased towards practical solutions that produce working software that is easy to change. She is also someone who explains things, but has difficulty speaking without drawing on the whiteboard and feels inarticulate unless the conversation includes at least three colors. She believes in simplicity; simple code, and straightforward explanations, and strives for it in her code and in her writing.

Wiki's Song of Code and Content

Agile programming and Wiki hypertext emerged together out of a single vision of completing each other's work. Twenty years later we see opportunity to direct this collaboration toward more difficult problems. This is not your father's wiki. We reexamine fundamental questions about what it means to write and to program. Then we show how Federated Wiki uses both to make a better world.

This is the 5th event in a series of free monthly FutureTalks from disruptive Developers, innovative Technologists and world-changing Creatives. Doors open at 5:30p for food, drinks and networking. The presentation will begin right at 6p.

Please RSVP via Eventbrite HERE

Love Letters to Net Neutral Municipal Broadband
Portland City Hall

Roses are red, violets are blue, we need net neutrality and public ownership too! Hope you like typewriters, this month's event will feature a lot of them.

Comcast and other large internet service providers have successfully lobbied to repeal net neutrality, sell information about what you do online, and prevent localities from properly regulating them. Municipal broadband is the last line of defense against internet service provider abuses which threaten freedom of information, digital equality, and democracy itself.

Municipal broadband is something many cities such as Tacoma, WA and Sandy, OR already have. In Portland we have been planning to build a municipal broadband network decades, now that our internet freedoms are under attack, it’s an idea whose time has come.

pdxfiber's Portland Reach: Play in the world's largest "telephone game"
NW Couch and Naito Parkway

Portland Attempts World Record to get Google’s attention. World’s longest “Telephone Game” needs only 700 people.

A group of citizens are organizing the world’s longest “Telephone Game” as an attempt to get the attention of Google.

The Technology giant has put out a Request For Information (RFI) to municipalities who may be interested in partnering with Google to install a 1 gigabyte fiber optic network that will serve 50,000 to 500,000 homes.

The RFI has already caused quite a stir among cities large and small across America. In an attempt to gain the favor of the company, one city, Topeka, Kansas decided to change its name to Google for a day.

The City of Portland is taking the proposal seriously and will be adopting a resolution Wednesday, March 17th to provide a proposal to the search engine colossus. The project would be a significant undertaking for Google. Estimates are that they would need to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to lay a fiber optic network in most cities, whereas in Portland, City efforts to facilitate it have already tilled the fields for high-speed broadband.

The significance of the project is that it would provide speeds of one hundred times greater than is available today in the United States, potentially spurring innovative, revenue generating businesses and jobs in the city that is awarded the prize.

A group of citizens in the technology and creative industries clusters have joined in the effort to “Woo the Goog”, since the RFI states that citizen involvement will be a deciding factor in awarding the fiber network.

The Game will stretch from Pioneer Courthouse Square, and attempt to cross the Steel Bridge to the steps of the Rose Garden arena. The event will begin at 9am Saturday March 20th, and the record-breaking Telephone game attempt will start at the east side of the Steel Bridge at 9:30, reaching Mayor Sam Adams in Pioneer Courthouse Square at approximately 10:30. All who are interested are encouraged to meet at the corner of NW Couch and Naito Parkway.

Refresh PDX: Bauhaus in the Browser
FINE

Attendees will get a showcase of how these new digital techniques can be applied to the web by journeying back to the past—nearly 100 years—to one of the most notable periods in the history of design: Bauhaus modernism. During this period, design was highly influential yet gleefully experimental, with strict geometry, overlapping elements, and rotated text. Attendees will see works by artist Piet Mondrian, typographer Jan Tschichold, dadaist Kurt Schwitters, and metal-worker Marianne Brandt recreated or redesigned on screen, and optimized for the new medium of mobile devices.

Writing for an Invisible Audience | Susan Rich of RichWriting
IASECP Webinar

Are you writing for the internet? Whether you are writing website copy or blog postings, your goal is to resonate with an invisible audience.

Write it Rich! Real-World Writing Tips for Reluctant Writers is a fast-paced workshop covers:

* How to organize your thoughts and pick a key message
* Ingredients for memorable online content (both written and video)
* Tips and tricks to capture your target market’s attention *Q & A – strongly encouraged!

Susan Rich has earned a degree in journalism…which led to a career writing for newspapers and magazines. Along the way she joined several major companies, including Boeing and Tektronix. She learned how airplanes fly (and why they crash), and what goes on inside a logic analyzer (it isn’t logical if you’re not an engineer). To that end, Susan managed PR and marketing campaigns, developed materials for product launches, and fought the good fight with Excel. She lost — which only goes to show that she writse better than she can build a spreadsheet. After two decades in the corporate sector, Susan left in 2004 to start her own business… Welcome Susan!
