Portland Attempts World Record to get Google’s attention. World’s longest “Telephone Game” needs only 700 people.

A group of citizens are organizing the world’s longest “Telephone Game” as an attempt to get the attention of Google.

The Technology giant has put out a Request For Information (RFI) to municipalities who may be interested in partnering with Google to install a 1 gigabyte fiber optic network that will serve 50,000 to 500,000 homes.

The RFI has already caused quite a stir among cities large and small across America. In an attempt to gain the favor of the company, one city, Topeka, Kansas decided to change its name to Google for a day.

The City of Portland is taking the proposal seriously and will be adopting a resolution Wednesday, March 17th to provide a proposal to the search engine colossus. The project would be a significant undertaking for Google. Estimates are that they would need to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to lay a fiber optic network in most cities, whereas in Portland, City efforts to facilitate it have already tilled the fields for high-speed broadband.

The significance of the project is that it would provide speeds of one hundred times greater than is available today in the United States, potentially spurring innovative, revenue generating businesses and jobs in the city that is awarded the prize.

A group of citizens in the technology and creative industries clusters have joined in the effort to “Woo the Goog”, since the RFI states that citizen involvement will be a deciding factor in awarding the fiber network.

The Game will stretch from Pioneer Courthouse Square, and attempt to cross the Steel Bridge to the steps of the Rose Garden arena. The event will begin at 9am Saturday March 20th, and the record-breaking Telephone game attempt will start at the east side of the Steel Bridge at 9:30, reaching Mayor Sam Adams in Pioneer Courthouse Square at approximately 10:30. All who are interested are encouraged to meet at the corner of NW Couch and Naito Parkway.

Amber Case is the Director of Esri's R&D Center, Portland, where she works on next generation location-based technology. Previously, she co-founded Geoloqi, a location-based software company acquired by Esri in 2012. She recently worked on MapAttack! an urban geofencing game based on Esri technology.

In 2012 she was named one of National Geographic's Emerging Explorers and made Inc Magazine's 30 under 30 with Geoloqi co-founder Aaron Parecki. Case has spoken at TED on technology and humans and regularly speaks around the world.

An exploration of the purpose of rules ...

We're iconoclasts who reject arbitrary constraints yet long for understandable, predictable, changeable applications. We want code that follows rules yet we refuse to let rules to get in our way. We're deeply attached to the little rules that help get things done (No trailing whitespace! Indent using two spaces!) and despise the big, complicated ones that impose one-size-fits-all straitjackets on otherwise sane programming problems.

This talk proposes 5 'little' rules for writing object-oriented code. These rules are determinedly simple yet produce code that experts love and novices can be trusted to change; they fill the space between anarchy and order with practical, common sense. The rules guide without impeding, help without hindering and constrain without binding, and let you create applications that are easy to change and fun to work their whole life long.

Sandi Metz is a programmer. In the past 30+ years she has written innumerable applications, many of which are still running today. Dealing with long lived applications has left her deeply biased towards practical solutions that produce working software that is easy to change. She is also someone who explains things, but has difficulty speaking without drawing on the whiteboard and feels inarticulate unless the conversation includes at least three colors. She believes in simplicity; simple code, and straightforward explanations, and strives for it in her code and in her writing.

Getting up to speed in OpenStack can be challenging. Whether you're just getting involved or trying to find the deepest details on a given project, where to start is not obvious. Vern Hart (Director of Delivery at Solinea) will cover the landscape of training options available, as well providing a roundup of the best sources of OpenStack information out there. He'll also give some guidance on interacting with the community and how best to leverage the knowledge of the thousands of brilliant developers available via mailing list or IRC.

Vern Hart is the Director of Delivery at Solinea. He is a proven consultant specializing in open infrastructure and helping customers adopting new infrastructure architectures and solutions. Vern has over 20 years of systems administration experience. Prior to Solinea, He was CTO at three separate companies including his own which eventually merged with their largest competitor. Most recently Vern was Director of Support Operations and Training at Morphlabs where he was instrumental in the migration of Morphlabs onto OpenStack from Eucalyptus. He has proven success in both systems development and engineering roles.

Comcast and other large internet service providers have successfully lobbied to repeal net neutrality, sell information about what you do online, and prevent localities from properly regulating them. Municipal broadband is the last line of defense against internet service provider abuses which threaten freedom of information, digital equality, and democracy itself.

Municipal broadband is something many cities such as Tacoma, WA and Sandy, OR already have. In Portland we have been planning to build a municipal broadband network decades, now that our internet freedoms are under attack, it’s an idea whose time has come.

What is Information? (2020) will investigate conceptualizations and implementations of information via material, representational, and hybrid frames.
