Artistically, Paul has collaborated with Grammy-award-winning artists, curated multi-million dollar art experiences, and exhibited his bespoke interactive music installations at festivals across North America.

Paul's philanthropic efforts include co-founding the startup accelerator Starve Ups, the TEDxPortland speaker conference, and the RAINMaker Fund at the University of Oregon, committing over $300,000 to provide annual $5,000 seed grants to student entrepreneurs. Currently, Troiano serves as the Co-Founder and President of Metrognome, a provider of music rehearsal facilities to thousands of musicians, scaling from the Pacific Northwest across the United States.

About the Startup Conversations Event Each month we host a local founder who will give a short presentation about their company. They will focus on how it all got started, where they are today, and their plans for the future including the challenges they face to make their goals happen.

Following the presentation our host, Dave Barcos will dig into the founder's background, the company's story, and other observations. After the interview, we will have an audience Q&A session to help attendees ask direct questions of the presenter. It has proven to be a great format to catalyze the local founders and the startups in the region. You won't want to miss it.

MergePHP meets the second Thursday of every month at 16:00 Pacific

Details This is a fun networking event to play pool and talk tech. We will have free tables to play on and Happy Hour runs until 6pm. Everyone is welcome, you do not have to be great at pool to attend!

How many pages are reachable from Wikipedia's page on the Rust programming language in two hops? Around 30,000, it turns out, including pages on wheat flour, Welsh orthography, and the zombie apocalypse.

As it turns out, it's super easy to do this exploration using asynchronous Rust code. Wikipedia offers a cute little REST API for querying links, and it's easy to use Serde to generate requests and parse replies. And if you're feeling guilty about flooding a precious public resource with silly API requests, it's also super easy to do rate limiting.

Jim Blandy will show how to wire up Tokio, Reqwest, and Serde to do the spidering, and whip up a mock server for testing using Warp. The techniques shown work nicely for all kinds of REST API scripting, including, say, GitHub.

Christina Burnett, T-Mobile

Christina has over thirty years of experience in consulting, data modeling, software integration, analysis, and programming. She came to Data Governance late in her career, but having a data-centric view of software has been a common thread throughout her work. Her software development background has given her a practical perspective on how to work with software development teams to improve Data Governance outcomes. Christina has a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Houston, and an M.S. in Computer Science and Software Engineering from the University of Washington Bothell. Christina is certified as a Collibra Expert Level 2.

Abstract

We have shifted our focus from governing data when an initiative is complete, to beginning data governance during the design phase of the software development lifecycle. We walk with our development teams to ensure that governance is baked into the plan, not an afterthought. We determine the level of governance that is needed for new data products during design. This ensures that the development teams are not surprised by our governance requirements, reducing remediation, and improving the quality of the data products from their inception.

This presentation will include:

An explanation of the Governance by Design framework Demonstrations of workflows in Collibra to support the process Change management for both the Data Governance team and the other impacted groups RSVP required for entry ticket. This is a VIRTUAL event

Demolicious is back! This monthly pitch event brings together founders and the community to learn about what is being built here and around Portland.

How this all works: If you are a founder, you will apply to pitch here. Don't worry. "Apply" simply means you want to pitch, but there's no real competitive process to be accepted. We just want to see what you're working on before we put you in front of a room full of people.

You will be given 3 minutes to pitch at the event.

The audience will be given a number to text and vote for their favorite one. The one with the most votes will go home with the Demolicious Championship belt.

The belt is not for you to keep as you will have to come back and "defend" it. However, you will be allowed to put your startup sticker (if applicable) on the belt for all to see and to live on forever in infamy!

We will post the projects/companies that will be pitching a week prior to the event. Which means you have until then to fill out the form.

Our panelists will share their insights and experiences on integrating AI into educational settings, discussing both the challenges and opportunities that come with it.

Panel Isabel Bo-Linn is an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Portland State University (PSU). As a designer, Isabel specializes in product, print, and digital design for non-profit organizations and corporations. She teaches digital and print media at PSU, including AI and Design, a special topics course that explores topics related to the implementation, impact, ethics, and collaborative opportunities of AI and the creative arts. Her other academic research is varied and includes investigations into visual essays, design education, and speculative, interactive systems.

Chris Brida is the Director of Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Pathways for Portland Public Schools, where he leads innovative initiatives to bridge education and industry through strategic partnerships and transformative programming. Focusing on leveraging technology to enhance workforce development and educational outcomes, Chris has implemented a district-wide CTE strategic plan and launched efforts such as a first-of-its-kind CTE student council. As a doctoral student at the University of Kentucky, his research explores ecosystem models for education partnerships, emphasizing scalable and technology-driven solutions. The confluence of his professional role and doctoral work has led to a focus on the role of the broader AI ecosystem in the Metro region and its impact on CTE programs.

Marty Sampson is a National Board Certified teacher with more than 30 years of experience teaching English in public high schools. For the last 17 years she has specialized in Advanced Placement AP English courses, specifically AP Language and Composition, AP Seminar, and AP Research, in the Evergreen School District in Vancouver, Washington; these AP courses focus on the reading, writing, and critical thinking skills necessary for college and career readiness, as well as civic engagement. Marty explores with her students how AI can be leveraged as a tool for research, comprehension, and organization in order to reinforce and support students' learning and career goals. Additionally, Marty's use of AI in her classroom builds much needed critical thinking skills around AI, as it permeates the digital landscapes that students regularly interact with now and will continue to see in the future.

Jon Down, PhD in Strategy, is a Professor of Entrepreneurship & AI at the University of Portland and founder of Gen AI Corp, where he helps companies responsibly leverage AI. Drawing on his research analyzing the growth trajectory of AI, he sees significant risks in the coming of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and advocates for more widespread discussion and engagement in shaping the development of AI. He is currently working on a book chapter on the future of Higher Education with AI.

Our panel will be graciously moderated by Seth Fleischauer. Seth is the President of Banyan Global Learning, which he founded in 2008 after teaching elementary school with NYC Teaching Fellows. With Banyan, Seth delivers meaningful global learning experiences to students worldwide, preparing them for success in an interconnected world. Recognizing the critical role of digital literacy in global education, Seth trains teachers on leveraging AI to enhance both teacher and student wellness. Seth has hosted over a dozen podcast episodes on AI in education through his shows Make It Mindful: Insights for Global Learning and Why Distance Learning? His 15 minutes of digital fame began in 2007 when he became a meme—Google “Sad Mets Fan” to discover his story.

Postgres has a wide array of supported authentication methods. The strongest methods have trouble scaling across large numbers of database instances, though, and while organizations have ways to centralize user credentials -- for example by using LDAP or Kerberos -- those solutions come with their own large lists of caveats.I'm currently developing Postgres-native support for OAuth, which is a widely-deployed framework for authorizing clients using a third-party provider. I'll talk about the current state of the patchset, explain some of the elements of the design, and demonstrate what it might look like to deploy it yourself.

In this 2-day Agile Fluency Game Facilitators' workshop, you will experience the Agile Fluency Game simulation and learn how to facilitate the game for others.

About the Agile Fluency Game

The Agile Fluency Game is a physical board game designed by James Shore and Arlo Belshee, which authentically simulates 2.5 years (10 seasons) on a software development team. Inspired by modern "Euro-style" board game experiences such as Settlers of Catan, the game focuses on the experience of team members using agile practices and approaches. It was developed so that experiments that occur in game play lead to new insights about your real-world options. Game players learn about the benefits and trade-offs of adopting agile practices. Of course, you must also deliver features! Or what's the point?

During game play, you'll decide how to invest your effort. Your quest is to decide how best to spend your limited time. Do you develop features or learn new practices? Which features? Which practices? Features are the only way to earn points, but agile practices help you do more.

Your boss is entirely focused on results. As long as you deliver a great product to your customers, she doesn't care how you do it. She needs to see regular flow of new features, but other than that, the choices are up to you. Your challenge is to find the right mid of features and practices to get the most money possible.

One session with a retrospective on your play may be all you need to stimulate actionable insights. Yet the game challenges prior assumptions, and most players enjoy the opportunity to try for a better score. Each time brings greater understanding of the benefits, trade-offs, and investments you need to succeed.

When and Where to Use the Game

We've used the game with positive results at many different levels of the organization. It's great for: - Introducing agile attitudes and expectations to middle managers, directors, and VPs who don't know a lot about software development. - Encouraging agile engineering practices among a number of teams by playing with cross-team groups. - Identifying potential shifts in workflows and practices by playing with cross-functional dev teams, and the non-dev individuals that work closely with the teams in roles such as QA, architects, marketing, and managers. - Of course, with any learning game the debrief is important, regardless of what group is playing. That's when the real insights occur.

Using what we learn from the January 14, 2025 event, we'll be throwing together another community gathering on April 8, 2025.

Session Details: Metadata Driven Pipelines for Dynamic Full and Incremental Processing in Azure SQL

Developing ETLs/ELTs can be a complex process when you add in business logic, large amounts of data, and the high volume of table data that needs to be moved from source to target. This is especially true in analytical workloads involving Azure SQL when there is a need to either fully reload a table or incrementally update a table. In order to handle the logic to incrementally update a table or fully reload a table in Azure SQL (or Azure Synapse), we will need to create the following assets: • Metadata table in Azure SQL ◦ This will contain the configurations needed to load each table end to end • Metadata driven pipelines ◦ Parent and child pipeline templates that will orchestrate and execute the ETL/ELT end to end • Custom SQL logic for incremental processing ◦ Dynamic SQL to perform the delete and insert based on criteria the user provides in the metadata table

This session uses Azure SQL DB as the source and sink databases. However, Azure SQL MI, On-Prem SQL, and Synapse Dedicated Pools (along with Synapse Pipelines) will also be compatible for this solution. As a source, you can use databases like MySQL, Oracle, and others. You will just need to adjust the query syntax/connections to match the desired source.

He excels in Azure architecture, end-to-end solution design, and full-stack Azure development.
