SUMMARY:Galois Tech Talk: An Introduction to Communicating Haskell Processe
 s
CREATED:20100310T163027
LAST-MODIFIED:20100310T163027
DESCRIPTION:Haskell is an excellent language for combining the power of fun
ctional programming with imperative constructs. This characteristic led to
the development of the Communicating Haskell Processes (CHP) libraries\, wh
ich support imperative synchronous message-passing in Haskell. The core 'ch
p' library provides basic message-passing\, concurrency and choice\, as wel
l as integrated support for tracing. The 'chp-plus' library provides higher
-level features such as process composition operators and behaviour combina
tors. This talk provides an introduction to the two libraries and the progr
amming style they engender -- as well as a brief look at the formal semanti
 cs underlying the libraries.

CREATED:20100216T111548
LAST-MODIFIED:20100303T104657
DESCRIPTION:Bringing cost effective energy to the Billions living in primit

opulation\, are without access to electricity. Electricity advances develop
mental factors such as small business development\, extended working hours\
, access to communications\, enhanced education levels and rural developmen
 t. Energy can improve life of millions. \n\nIn developing countries access
to energy remains constrained by factors such as limited access to well ada
pted affordable technology\, fragmented small markets\, prohibitive taxes a
nd limited financial resources. On Dec 14th \, at the Copenhagen Climate c
onference the Obama Administration announced a $350 million dollar initiati
ve dubbed “Climate REDI” to promote clean energy technologies in developing
countries. \n\nJoin us on March 17th for a discussion with our expert pa
nel\, on what kind of innovations in products\, finance\, supply and servic
e can ensure reliable & affordable energy to the billions of poor across th
 e world. \n\nOur 2 presenters Michael(Kipp) Baratoff\, Principal\, Equili
brium Capital & Patrick Maloney\, Program Director\, Lemelson Foundation h
ave been fully immersed in this space\, having been engaged with social ent
repreneurs over the course of their careers. Lemelson Foundation awarded an
energy grant to Selco India for it’s Incubation Center and Innovation Depa
rtment to develop new products and new business models to solve key problem
s for energy consumers. The SELCO Solar Light Private Limited (SELCO India)
is already an important provider of solar systems and cook stoves in south
ern India\, with products that allow rural families to increase their house
hold income while reducing the environmental and health risks of higher-cos
t kerosene lamps and inefficient stoves. \n\nOur event organizer\, TiE Oreg
on Clean Energy SIG chair\, Ravi Sinha\, is the Chairman of Choice Solar In
dia Pvt Ltd.\, company engaged in creative distribution of energy solution
s to India's marginalized residents. \n\n Bill Campbell\, our moderator for
the evening is also a Principal at Equlibrium as well as a TiE Oregon Char
ter Member and Board Member. \n\nThey will bring an insight into proble
ms\, economics\, delivery & growth of energy solutions. \n\n This event is
also a continuation of our theme “Serving the 6 Billion” on which we launch
ed TiE Oregon in 2007. The keynote (watch the video on our website) speaker
at the launch was C.K Prahalad\, Paul & Ruth McCracken Distinguished Unive
rsity Professor of Corporate Strategy at the University of Michigan Ross Sc

SUMMARY:Jon Bach talks about exploratory testing
CREATED:20100228T183846
LAST-MODIFIED:20100306T142113
DESCRIPTION:Jon Bach is coming to our local agile users group to tell us ab
out his specialty\, exploratory testing. Pizza at 6:30\, meeting at 7.\n\n
Talk: "Exploratory Testing: Now In Session"\n \nThe agile nature of explora
tion and the ability of testers to rapidly apply their skills and experienc
e make exploratory testing a widely used test approach—especially when time
is short. But exploratory testing is often dismissed by project managers w
ho assume that it is not reproducible\, measurable\, or accountable. If you
share these concerns\, a solution may lie in a technique called Session-Ba
sed Test Management (SBTM)\, developed by Jon and his brother James specifi
cally to address these problems. In SBTM\, testers are assigned areas of a
product to explore\, and testing is time boxed in "sessions" which have mis
sion statements called “charters” to create a meaningful and countable unit
of work. Jon discusses—and you can practice—the skills of exploration and
demonstrates a freely available\, open source tool to help manage your expl
oratoration.\n\nSpeaker Bio: Jon Bach has been in testing for 14 years\, 12
of which has been as a manager. His experience includes managing teams at
Microsoft\, HP and LexisNexis\, and is currently a managing consultant for
Quardev\, Inc. -- a Seattle test lab. He speaks frequently about test man
agement and exploratory testing\, and is the co-inventor (with his brother
James) of Session-Based Test Management. He’s also written a few articles
for testing magazines as well as a listed co-author of a Microsoft Patterns

SUMMARY:SAOpdx: Parallel Java Programming for Multi-Core Processors
CREATED:20100302T110338
LAST-MODIFIED:20100306T194243
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the SAO Developers Forum\n\nWith over 6.5 million
software developers worldwide\, Java is used in every major industry segmen
t\, running on everything from cell phones to scientific supercomputers. Tr
aditionally\, it has been difficult for programmers to take advantage of th
e multi-core systems with their ever-multiplying number of cores. But that
is all about to change with JSR-166y. Targeted for Java 7\, scheduled for r
elease in late 2010\, JSR-166y adds a lightweight task framework known as F
orkJoin (FJ) to the Java platform.\n\nSteve Dohrmann will be discussing the
fundamentals of parallel Java programming. His talk will include the use o
f Java threads\, an overview of the JSR-166y (ForkJoin) package\, and some
points on higher-level parallel programming models. If you're a Java develo
per\, you can't afford to miss this opportunity to learn about the future o
f Java in a parallel world. And developers on other environments will find
the overview of parallel application development and solid parallel algorit
hm fundamentals to be valuable in building systems that scale and provide c
ompetitive differentiation for your solutions.\n\nMeet the Speaker: Steve D
