Drupalcon Portland 2010 Proposal Planning Meeting
Urban Grind Coffee House

Meeting to discuss possible venues, themes, etc. for a proposal for Drupalcon 2010. It's due March 1st, so this is a very last minute thing, but still worth a try.

Drupal (drupal.org) is a Content Management System, with powerful modularity. The regular Drupal Meetup is the 2nd Wednesday of every month at OpenSourcery.

For the March meeting we'll have a short presentation by Tony Rasmussen. It'll continue a discussion at the January meeting on when to use Contemplate module vs. the Theme Layer.

After that I was hoping to have everyone who's going to DrupalCon in DC talk for a few minutes about what they'd seen and what got them excited.

As always, the meeting promises to generate lots of good questions, answers and hands-on communication. Drupal meetings are free and open to the public.

NOTE: Please be aware that the developers at OpenSourcery will be working right up to event time. We ask that you arrive between 5:50pm and 6:00pm. Thank you!

After the presentation finishes we'll walk over to the Bridgeport Brew Pub for a food and drink.

Drupal Beyond the Web

Justin Miller will treat us to a half-hour version of his DrupalCon DC Presentation, Drupal Beyond the Web.

Modules 101

Each meeting, we want to feature one or two brief presentations (no more than 15 minutes, including questions), highlighting an optional core or contributed module, what it's good for, and any special considerations or tricky configuration issues it has. The idea is to introduce people who are new to Drupal, as well as experienced Drupal users, to solid and useful drupal add-ons. If you're interested in presenting this month, let us know which module by replying.

Workflow, Actions, and Triggers

Melissa Anderson will present a brief summary of a site using Workflow, Workflow Required Fields, Actions, and Triggers to create complex electronic form routing. After that, she'll demonstrate how to build a simplified version of the use case.

Lightning Rounds

It's been a while since we've done lightning rounds, which are generally quick, informative, and fun. Here's what we've got so far:

Lightning rounds are generally limited to 5-7 minutes, but this will vary depending on how many we have.

July Drupal Challenge

We'll be voting on a task or challenge that can be solved by Drupal in any number of ways. The July meeting will then focus on solutions people come up with. More information here.

Modules 101

This may be overkill for a lightning session meeting, but if there's time left, and anybody wants to talk for a few minutes about a module no Drupal user should be without, we'll do this too.

Logistics

We meet at the OpenSourcery offices at 1636 NW Lovejoy St. Portland, OR 97209. NOTE: Please be aware that the developers at OpenSourcery will be working right up to event time. We ask that you arrive no earlier than 5:50pm. Thank you!

After the presentation finishes we'll walk over to the Lucky Lab NW for food and drink.

July Challenge: Q & A Solutions Using Drupal

We're going forward with a July challenge meeting, and either Jonathan or I will post the final challenge on Monday. A lot of incredibly fun solutions have been proposed to Michelle's suggestion, and unless something more compelling comes along:

"I like the idea of a challenge! If I can suggest one that might be fun, and that probably has many ways to accomplish it: how about a Question and Answer section? Something where a user can post a question, and either a moderator or a user can post answers - but possibly the moderator answer always shows above other user answers or is somehow distinguished."

A couple of requirements:

  • Presentations must be Internet-accessible so we can use just one laptop to keep things quick.
  • To be guaranteed a time to present, make your commitment on the meeting reminder by July 6th.

This month's topic is going to be a module showcase, or module hidden gems. It will be similar to previous Module 101 presentations, but broader in scope, where presenters will focus on a singlel module that they either a) can't live without or b) have just discovered and want to highlight.

If you would like to present a module, please leave a comment below. Depending on the number of people who sign-up, timeslots should be around 15-20 minutes (maximum, no need to feel pressured to present for that long if you can show off a module in 5 or 10 minutes).

A theme has emerged from recent offers to present, namely, ways to avoid the use of panels. To round it out, I'm hoping one or two of the folks who use Panels will volunteer to do the Modules 101 introduction (what kind of problems does Panels solve and what are the gotchas associated for complete beginners) as well as a more hands-on example of how to use Panels.

Tentative Agenda

  • Introductions and Call for Notetaker
  • Modules 101: A 5-10 minute overview of a Drupal module for beginners. This month: Panels. (beginner introduction)
  • Panels: A more advanced look at how to use panels. (beginner hands-on)
  • Content Template: (jnicola) Using node-content_type.tpl.php instead of Panels. (beginner / intermediate)
  • Node Reference & Co.: (emptyvoid) Node reference / node relationships / modal dialog API / alternative to panels (advanced)

Drupal User Group Meeting (Social Web Integration + Janrain Engage + Advanced Git Training)
OpenSourcery

Just a friendly reminder that this WEDNESDAY (August 11) is the date of our monthly Portland Drupal User Group Meeting. What's Drupal, you ask? It's a PHP-based content management system that helps you build the best websites in the world!

We're super excited for this meeting.... We've got two awesome presentations on the agenda:

1. "Janrain Engage: Connecting Drupal with the Social Web" presented by Brian McGinnis, Forest Basford & Larry Drebes (Janrain team members)

Need to quickly connect your Drupal website to the social web? Janrain Engage (formerly RPX) may be just what the doctor (or developer!) ordered. Key team members from Portland-based Janrain will be here to discuss their Janrain Engage service and how it empowers your site visitors to sign-in with their existing accounts on Facebook, Google, Twitter, Yahoo!, MySpace, AOL, or other networks, and then simultaneously publish user comments, reviews or other activities from your site to multiple networks. In particular, the Janrain team will address the current state of the Janrain Engage Drupal module (http://drupal.org/project/rpx ), ongoing efforts to port the module to Drupal 7, and the latest roadmap for future module enhancements--plus important insights into how you can best leverage the power of third-party social networks. It's also a great opportunity to learn how local Drupal developers can get involved.

2. "Git for Drupal (Part II, Advanced Git)" presented by Michael Schwern

At last month's meeting, local git expert Michael Schwern did a great job introducing us to git--even demonstrating for us (with tinker toys!) git's underlying simplicity and elegance of implementation. Now it's time to kick things up a notch by going beyond the theoretical to the practical: In this more advanced presentation, Michael will delve deeper into essential git commands--including how to best create repositories, add files, clone, commit, fork, branch, stash, and merge. Because a Drupal project has some special considerations that other projects don’t, he'll cover some important key action steps (such as using remote vendor branches to track Drupal core and modules, leveraging the benefits of github.com, and merging in your local patches). We'll also open up the discussion to experienced git users in the audience who will offer their insights into best practices for using git with Drupal. With Drupal.org switching from CVS to git, now is the time to embrace version control in your projects and become a power git user!

Finally, here are the meeting details:

Date: Wednesday, August 11 Time: 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. (after the meeting, we head to Lucky Lab for drinks) Location: OpenSourcery offices (1636 NW Lovejoy St. Portland, OR 97209)

It promises to be an awesome meeting... you absolutely don't want to miss it!

Here's what we've got on the agenda:

  1. "A Case Study in Drupal 7: Care Network by Elite Care" presented by Manuel Mejia

Want to leverage the power of Drupal to address your own specific niche industry or market? Learn how this can be accomplished by examining a real-world case study of the "Care Network"—a Drupal distribution that assists staff and family members in creating "Communities of Care" for elderly and disabled people. Built on Drupal 7, the Care Network helps provision services, monitor community residents, and facilitate social interaction.

In particular, Manuel will discuss unique features of the project including real-time location tracking of all individuals on campus, programable alerts using a wide array of sensors, web enabled recording of daily notes and services, and touch screen monitors used to input and display this information. He'll also touch upon the strengths of Drupal as an application platform and how anyone can extend Drupal 7 core and contributed modules to fit their unique project requirements and needs.

  1. "Building a Social Network in Drupal" presented by Ben Kaplan

Have you ever wanted to build your own social network? Or maybe add some cool social networking features to your existing website? In this presentation, Ben will demo some of the latest features of the User Relationships (http://drupal.org/project/user_relationships) and Private Message (http://drupal.org/project/privatemsg) modules—two modules he's worked on that allow you to replicate many features of popular social networks.

And what if you also want to leverage the power of other third-party social networks like Facebook, Twitter, or MySpace? Ben will demo the newest features of the Janrain Engage (http://drupal.org/project/rpx) module, including the ability to authenticate with other social networks, map user data from these networks, share content simultaneously across networks, and integrate with popular Drupal modules like Rules and Views.

Finally, here are the meeting details:

Date: Wednesday, April 13

Time: 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. (after the meeting, we head to Lucky Lab for drinks and conversation!)

Location: OpenSourcery offices (1636 NW Lovejoy St. Portland, OR 97209)

Here's what we've got on the agenda:

1. "A Million Pageviews an Hour: Extreme Drupal Performance" presented by Aaron Longwell

The Kentucky Derby is the most watched horse racing event in the world. It's frequently called "the most exciting two minutes in sports," and is nationally televised on 3 different networks and simulcast worldwide. All that excitement results in www.kentuckyderby.com, the race's official Drupal-powered web site receiving more than 1 million page views in less than an hour.

Presented by Aaron Longwell, Chief Technologist at Culture Foundry, this presentation will cover the hardware, software, Drupal modifications and extensions that enabled the site to serve every one of those pages with sub-200ms response times. In particular, Aaron's talk will discuss helpful Drupal modules, Varnish, HTTP in-browser caching, load balancing, redundancy, load testing, Pressflow, Amazon Web Services, and Capistrano--and how each played a part in the Kentucky Derby site.

Even small sites with little traffic can benefit from many of the techniques and technologies Aaron will be discussing. The talk will be relatively technical in nature (there will even be a bit of code) but even non-developers should learn something about the principles behind super high performance web sites.

2. "Location + Maps: Making it Actually Work" presented by Katrin Silvius

In her recent work, Katrin Silvius, senior web developer at One Economy, has discovered all sorts of bugs and workarounds necessary to make location and maps work well together in Drupal. Katrin will discuss some of the things she's learned from her work and we'll open up the discussion to other developers about best practices and nagging problems with implementing location and maps in Drupal.

Finally, here are the meeting details:

This crazy Portland heatwave must be getting to me, because we're totally mixing things up for the July Drupal user group!

  1. We've got free pizza thanks to the fine folks at Lullabot & Drupalize.me and free beer & drinks thanks to OpenSourcery. So we'll start off the meetup with 30 minutes of socializing and eating (and even some pinballing!). If you or your company would like to sponsor pizza for future DUGs, drop a comment below.

  2. No presenters at this months meetup. We'll be breaking up into teams and competing for 1 hour to make the most awesome, fun, random Drupal site using the mystery set of modules provided. Each site will need building, coding and theming of all levels in order to win, so everyone from the n00best-of-sitebuilders to the most experienced Drupal core contributor can help their team.

  3. I know that fame and karma are pretty big motivators in the Drupal community, but in case those aren't enough, we'll also have prizes for the winners. The OReilly people have donated a 3 day pass to OSCon that we'll be giving away along with some other goodies.

So remember to bring a laptop and come hungry... for pizza and to win!

We'll still be heading to the Lucky Lab NW on Quimby & 19th after the meetup for continued socializing and revelry.

Drupal Front-end meetup - August 2013

After a few super nerdy meetups, this month we will return to the aesthetics end of our front-end spectrum and talk a bit about typography and web fonts.

This will include:

  • How to choose good typography, appropriate to your usecase
  • Font resources
  • Icon fonts + Sass

...and likely more. Speaking of, if you have any tips, experiences, or resources that you think others might find useful, get in touch with me (Mindewen).

The format is going to be several shorter presentations / walk-throughs, 5-15 minutes long. Bring your laptop so you can play along!

With all the recent lightning and thunderstorms, it made me realize that we haven't had a lightning talk DUG in a while. So, this month Jesse will be kicking off the DUG with a short demo of the Custom Formatters module. Following that, we'll open things up to anyone who wants to give a 5 minute (or less) presentation.

Post a comment below if you'd like to give a lightning talk or if you'd like to present at a future DUG.

Pizza is being sponsored by the wonderful team at ServerLogic. They also host the Way Out West DUG and the DrupalCon Portland site was one of their recent notable projects. OpenSourcery will also have the kegerator flowing along with a selection of non-alcoholic beverages.

As with last month, we'll start off with about 30 minutes of food and socializing before diving into presentations. Following the DUG and announcements we'll head over to the Lucky Lab on Quimby for more food, drink and socializing.

through Eliot Center (First Unitarian Church)

The Portland Drupal scene is alive and well and local frontend developers are planning a collaborative event for all things design-related: DevSigner. DevSigner will bring together technology-oriented designers and invite them to share their expertise, helping them take Drupal frontend development to the next level. This is an opportunity for frontend devs to come together and learn from professionals beyond their spheres and explore new artistic directions for Drupal development, both classical and technical. This event will help creators expand their horizons through workshops and speaker presentations, as well as educate designers who would like to start creating for the web.

We are still looking for sponsors for this event. If you'd like to help support the first ever DevSigner, visit our website!

Drupal Frontend Meetup - Nearly Headless Drupal
Squishy Media

Drupal frontend devs, have you ever experienced frustration with Drupal's theming layer? Have you fought epic battles with theme functions or render arrays just to get that one snippet of crucial markup how you need it? Does template.php make you want to cry in a corner?

Jay Mallison and Mike Katsufrakis from Live Axle will tell us all about their adventures in creating a #NearlyHeadlessDrupal site where they are decoupling Drupal's excellent content management abilities from it's less-than-ideal frontend using JSON output and Angular.js.

PDX-MUG - (MySQL)
Acquia

Topic: "Drupal just wants to hug your database"

Description: "Drupal is one of the more widely adopted CMSs. It is open source and has a huge developer base. However, I rarely hear a DBA mention having to administer Drupal with anything but frustration and pessimism. At Acquia, we have thousands of Amazon instances running Drupal databases. Most sites are quite different from each other, but some basic principles apply to all. Being the DBA for Drupal does not have to be a negative experience! In addition to covering the generic Drupal MySQL configuration tips, I will cover optimization methods for specific features like semaphores, sessions, Views, and the various Drupal caching layers. I’ll also cover the use of query cache in the Drupal context, which while normally frowned upon in the MySQL community, is often beneficial in maintaining a healthy Drupal site. "

There will be pizza, so please register at meetup so that we can order the proper amount. http://www.meetup.com/Portland-MySQL-User-Group-PDX-MUG/events/224733639/

Following the meetup, we will head to a nearby pub for socializing.

This month, we have a guest speaker, Evan Lovely (https://github.com/EvanLovely), the CTO of Basalt (http://basalt.io). Evan is the maintainer of the PHP version of PatternLab.

If you have heard of PatternLab, you know that it is the de facto standard for creating, sharing and distributing design patterns for front end applications. This should be an interesting session.

The first 30 minutes of the meetup will be socializing and dinner, followed by the two talks in whatever order they would like. If you are hiring or promoting an event, there will be a brief opportunity for announcements.
Our meetup rotates each month, so check groups.drupal.org and meetup.com for next month's event, and our social meetup, Brewpal.
FYI there is less than a month to go before session submissions (https://events.drupal.org/seattle2019/submit-session) close for DrupalCon Seattle, coming this spring. If you have never submitted before, now is a great time to talk to someone about your idea - we have several past speakers and track chairs who are happy to help you flesh out your idea.
