Presentations:
* Igal Koshevoy will give an introduction to Chef: what it is; how to use its resources, third-party cookbooks, and the chef-solo toolset; how to write cookbooks, definitions, lightweight resources/providers, and roles. He's been building out a comprehensive multi-site configuration and plans to open source most of the code and tools soon, and thus has plenty of real code he can show.

Mobile Web Frameworks: A Case Study in Implementing jQTouch
Roll back
| description |
ORGANIZATION AND REGISTRATION
Presented by the Developer Forum of the Software Association of Oregon. Online registration is open through the website until 5pm on May 18.
EVENT SUMMARY
The sudden rise of smart phones interests organizations in extending their existing applications to work with mobile devices. The question immediately rises whether to develop native apps for the mobile platforms or to create a mobile-friendly web site.
Both approaches have pros and cons, but some code frameworks make it easy to produce websites that look and feel close to a native app by making use of HTML5 and CSS3.
Recently WebMD wanted to make a userâs Personal Health Record available in a mobile friendly manner. This talk will go over the key points which drove us to use the jQTouch framework over native apps, and it will go into technical detail showing how this framework allowed for a very fast and clean implementation.
The event includes networking, program, and lunch.
PRESENTER
Jake Hall, Lead Developer, WebMD
Jake Hall has worked in the software industry for 10 years. He has spent the last 6 years at WebMD Health Services Group and is currently Lead Developer and is has been providing leadership on the development team in moving to mobile applications. |

OEN Webinar: Is there a Market for your Product?
Roll back
| description |

Are you thinking of starting a new company? Or already have, but sales aren't what you think they should be? Are you questioning your market's "readiness" for your products or services? Your company?
If you are concerned about market acceptance - and want to learn how to quickly âidentifyâ how well the market will receive your product, don't miss this webinar.
Mark Paul, Managing Director at Synergy Consulting Group and the author of The Entrepreneur's Survival Guide, will walk you through two (of the six) methods to help you determine if there is a market for your product or business - before you invest time and money developing products that may never be what the market wants.
Speaker: Mark Paul
Mark Paul has extensive executive leadership experience. He has led start-ups through public companies in his 22 years in interim executive and consulting work. Before Synergy, he spent 10 years at Northrop Corporation (Global 500 company), where (as an intrapreneur) he built a 250-person business unit in two years. He has a degree in Physics, a patent, and published several editions of two business books: The Entrepreneur's Survival Guide, and How to Attract Significantly More Customers. |

CONFERENCE
Open Gov West 2011 is a two-day nonprofit conference being held at the Jupiter Hotel in Portland May 13-14, 2011. OGW '11 is designed to bring the Northwest region together to explore opportunities to open government, increase civic engagement, and coordinate projects across governments. Now is the time to move from old models and technology to finding innovative, cost efficient, and transparent methods for accomplishing governmentâs core missions. The conference exposes attendees to new ideas, technologies, practices, and partnerships. The conferenceâs goal is to help your organization build relationships and gain insights which help you build a more transparent, engaged government.
APPS CONTEST
The conference also includes an app development contest on Day Two, May 14. Developers entering the Open Gov West Cross-Gov Apps Contest have the opportunity to transform government data into useful information accessible to the massesâand to win prizes like iPads, marketing assistance, and technology prize packs. Governments from across the Pacific Northwest will send representatives from their own data.gov sites to offer developers advice and support, making this a unique opportunity for developers to interact directly with government data providers while building the applications.
The competition will run in the style of a code-a-thon, in which development begins Saturday, May 14 at 9 a.m. with a 7 p.m. deadline, with winners announced that evening. Sponsor Tropo will be providing $1,000 in developer scholarships and free development kits for participants. Developers are encouraged to purchase a ticket through Open Gov West or apply for developer scholarships. For more information: http://www.opengovwest.org/events/conference/opengovwest-11/1304-2/

Helping you Solve the Rubik's Cube of Revenue Growth: Getting from $1M to $5M
Roll back
| description |
Ever try to solve a Rubik's cube? Most people can complete one side, but solving the whole puzzle is decidedly more difficult. Entrepreneurs experience the same thing when trying to solve the revenue growth puzzle. Achieving the first million is pretty straightforward, but growing revenues from $1M to $5M is complicated. You have to be thinking several steps ahead and managing several moving parts. Solving the revenue growth puzzle requires you to think of marketing, sales, staffing, training, financing, production and distribution. OEN has assembled a stellar panel of entrepreneurs who have successfully grown their companiesâ revenues past the $5M mark and are willing to share their experiences, and answer your questions. Please join moderator Frank Helle, CEO of Axian, Inc. and Program Chair for OEN's CEO Roundtable, along with the following three revenue-growth experts for an informative and entertaining panel discussion. There will be plenty of interactive Q&A time regarding how to drive revenue growth from the $1M marker to the $5M marker.
Chris Marsh, Pulse Health
Julie Pickens, Little Busy Bodies
Mike Wright, Wellpartner
You can cut to profitability but not to top-line growth...learn what these experts know This panel of local entrepreneurs knows how to create long-term value for all stake holders through top-line growth. They also have succeeded recently despite the challenging access to capital and the difficult economy businesses face today. This workshop is your opportunity to quiz them on their successes, frustrations, and lessons learned that you can apply to your growing business. |

Bring something small and useful to show off.
chromatic - three pieces of code extracted from larger projects:
* a single-command (with confirmation) deployment system built on Dist::Zilla
* a Plack-based authentication system
* a Plack-based database switcher
... and the silly little after-hours project that inspired these projects.
Eric Wilhelm - a way to send mail through your imap server

An hour of time with an experienced attorney can sometimes run $400. Join us at OEN's 'Ask the Attorney' PubTalk on June 8th, 2011 and an hour of legal advice will only cost you the price of admission. We have put together a great panel of attorneys representing IP/Start Up, Corporate and Employment issues. Come by and bring those questions you have been dying to ask an attorney, as the event will include insights from our experienced panel, but also look to have an active Q&A element from the audience.
