description We'll be plugging in a new rooftop node out in the depths of Beaverton at about 12 noon tomorrow. It shouldn't take too long, so don't be too late or we'll be all done when you get there. Where: 16475 SW Cynthia Street, Beaverton OR 97007 When: Noon, Sunday, November 28, 2010 until 1 or 2pm We are going to be attaching another of the Ubiquiti Bullet M2HP's toUbiquiti Bullet M2HP's to a 5 foot mast on the roof, attached to a WgtCab inside. Come join the fun, watch, learn, participate! Ask not what free wifi can do for you, ask what you can do for free wifi! Come celebrate Personal Telco's 10th birthday, but plugging in another node! http://www.personaltelco.net/~russell/the-beginning.txt Ten years ago to the day, Adam Shand, inspired by a slashdot article on Consume.net in London, wrote a message to the Portland Linux Users Group mailing list. That message got Personal Telco off the ground, and it's been flying (sometimes eating some pine cones) ever since. Come help it gain some more altitude and soar with you into the future! When and Where for the Hackathon? The second global #RHoK hackathon event takes place around the world on December 4- 5, 2010. Jigsaw Renaissance, a Seattle hacker and maker space, is hosting the event. Tropo.com is sponsoring food and drinks throughout the Seattle event and developers and participants are invited to use join the community and use Jigsaw space throughout the hackathon. update Calagator::Event 1250459491 Galois Tech Talk: The Rubinius Virtual Machine Roll back

description Presented by Brian Ford Ruby is a highly dynamic, strongly-typed programming language created by Yukihiro Matsumoto in 1993 and first released in 1995. It borrows from Smalltalk, Lisp, and Perl. Ruby has single inheritance, mixins, and syntax features like omission of parentheses that make it well-suited for embedded domain-specific languages. Ruby was popularized by the Ruby on Rails web development framework. The Rubinius project began as an implementation of the Ruby programming language roughly following the design of the Smalltalk-80 virtual machine described in the Blue book (“Smalltalk-80: the language and its implementation” by Adele Goldberg and David Robson). We have extended the initial implementation based on modern research in virtual machines, garbage collectors, and just-in-time (JIT) compilers. Rubinius currently features a stack-oriented opcode virtual machine, generational garbage collector, and LLVM-based JIT compiler. Most of the Ruby core library and the bytecode compiler are written in Ruby. We will examine the main features of Rubinius and take a deeper dive into some aspects of the virtual machine and JIT compiler. We will also look at possible future work to address memory load, startup, and suitability for using Rubinius in Android phones. If there is time and interest, we will discuss implementing programming languages besides Ruby on Rubinius. description nil The Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) empowers artists and designers to reimagine what art and design can do in the world. This private fine arts and design college, founded in 1909 in Portland, Oregon, offers ten Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) degrees and six graduate degrees including master of fine arts (MFA) and master of arts (MA) degrees. Dr. Donald Tuski serves as the school's president. PNCA is home to the Center for Contemporary Art & Culture which hosts exhibitions with artists such as James Rosenquist and Cauleen Smith. The college welcomes the community in each month for First Thursday arts celebrations showcasing student work and throughout the year with free public lectures by nationally-recognized visual artists, designers, and scholars. The recently launched Make + Think + Code, a center for art and technology, hosts artists- and technologists-in-residence as well as numerous art-tech community events. At PNCA students learn to better understand the work they make and how it can make an impact in the world. Students hone skills and are introduced to entirely new ways of making. Just as importantly, they learn to think critically about their own work and that of others. PNCA graduates are working artists who show internationally; successful, creative, small-business owners; animators and designers working for top firms such as LAIKA, Nike, Weiden + Kennedy; professional printers working for studios like Gemini G.E.L.; freelance illustrators with high-profile commissions; and commercial photographers. PNCA is an accredited institutional member of both the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). In addition we are affiliated with the following: Association of Independent Colleges of Art & Design (AICAD) National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) Art Resources Consortium Northwest (ARC NW) Oregon Independent College Association (OICA) Foundations in Art: Theory and Education (FATE)

create Calagator::Event 1250459495 PDX Web: Lightning Talks! Roll back

description nil We're going to try something a little different for the holidays, at a different time and different location, so make a note! Rather than a specific topic with one speaker, we're going to do some lightning talks. In a nutshell, ANYONE can stand up and do a short 5 minute presentation about any topic they wish (preferably relevant to our group, but if you really want to talk about your cats...). Every speaker will be given be 5 minutes (by clock) with a 1 minute warning before the end. Slides are allowed, but not required. Props are welcome! Here's some ideas: * Projects you're working on * A new toolkit you're excited about * A new methodology you've developed * Books/Websites you highly recommend * A public rant/praise about our group * Hassles of writing books (hint, Dave... hint...) * Anything, really if you've never done a lightning talk, here's a good thing to read: http://selenadelesie.com/2010/06/30/try-a-lightning-talk/ Please post/email your topic if you plan to present. We may be able to fit in 12-15 in a reasonable time. We're meeting across the river at "Abstract Machines", off Ladd's Rose Gardens Circle and Squares. This won't be hard to get into - and a little more of a party atmosphere than our normal structure. Food and drinks are welcome/encouraged. create Calagator::Event 1250459490 Galois Tech Talk: The Rubinius Virtual Machine Roll back

description nil Presented by Brian Ford Ruby is a highly dynamic, strongly-typed programming language created by Yukihiro Matsumoto in 1993 and first released in 1995. If there is time and interest, we will discuss implementing programming languages besides Ruby on Rubinius.

description nil *Note* - this meeting is once again on the third Wednesday instead of the fourth, due to a conflict with Macworld. We are going to try again to cover Xcode 4, with the assumption that there will be a stable preview or release available by January. Please note that unless Xcode 4 has been publicly released by meeting time, you will need to be covered under the Apple NDA in order to attend this meeting. It's pretty easy to do; just join either the iPhone or Mac Developer Program. You can join for free, and it's a good thing to do anyway if you're doing this kind of work. We will head out afterwards for beer and discussion.

update Calagator::Event 1250459486 Beer and Blog Roll back

description Fridays from 4pm-6pm+ Portland bloggers meet up at the Green Dragon to help each other with their blogs. Good times are had by all. The website says... "Beer and Blog is about bloggers helping bloggers over beers. It is a meet up that takes place every Friday from 4pm until at least 6pm at the Green Dragon in Portland, OR. It started as a means to swap information among peers in the Portland tech scene. Now it has grown into a weekly happy hour for Portland area bloggers. Sometimes we work. Sometimes we discuss. Sometimes we go on a field trip. But we mostly play and celebrate the transition from the work week to the week end. It’s the kind of place that is fun to network in, kindle ideas into side projects, and announce a release." ... but it really has very little to do with blogging.
