create Calagator::Event 1250460550 PDX Web & Design Monthly Happy Hour Roll back

description nil If you're like me, you spend WAYYYY too much time in front of a computer. I think it would be great to have a monthly get together at a bar or pub to just get to know each other, have a brew, and yes, talk about the business. Real human interaction, in other words. We're now meeting at McFadden's. There is plenty more space and they serve food. Generally between 10 and 30 people show up - so join the (geek) party!

update Calagator::Event 1250460540 52 Mobile Apps Kickoff Roll back

description 52 Mobile Apps is a year-long, week-by-week mobile app marathon which will take place throughout 2012. This presentation will give an overview of our dream for the project, address questions and concerns for something so ambitious, and call for for your help with the project. And how can you help with this project? There are about four things we need: 1. Participants! Always wanted to work on an app, but you've been waiting for someone to impose a deadline? Now's your chance! 2. Committee members and web presence types! We're a handful of people right now, and our website isn't even ready. We need people to help get the word out, vote on app proposals and keep others interested from now through December 2012. 3. Article writers! Are you knowledgeable in mobile strategy, mobile culture, interaction design, prototyping, Java, Javascript, Objective C, XCode, PhoneGap, Titanium, or have any experience at all in the mobile development process? We definitely want to talk to you. 4. Sponsorship! 52 Mobile Apps is going to be a giant, giant project, and we'd love to have a little backing, in any form. Let's talk about how you can help us help you help us. 52 Mobile Apps is a year-long, week-by-week mobile app marathon which will take place throughout 2012. update Calagator::Event 1250460529 Green Light Movie...The Sustainable Oroville Project Roll back

description As a Portlander, you are considered a sustainability thought leader. You are cordially invited to our free solution based networking event, Monday, May 2nd. Are you looking to get something out of the time you spend at a networking event? Do you attend green networking events to meet new people, or to particpate in a solution? Join the key Sustainable Oroville and Green Light Movie team for an engaging conversation. City leaders are saying YES to “green” through Sustainable Oroville – a civic initiative that already has attracted a canola crushing plant (which will produce canola oil and meal), as well as plans for the nation’s first sustainable, passive haus hotel. Since the launch of this initiative, Oroville is gaining attention from other clean-technology entrepreneurs and sustainability advocates who want to see it succeed. So what’s the big deal? Oroville isn’t waiting around for the world to change … instead, it’s taking steps to change the world. Oroville’s journey into sustainability will create a road map that other agriculture-dependent communities can adopt. Capturing this transformation in a documentary film creates a proof-of-concept that can be distributed worldwide. Through conversations with local leaders, business owners and residents, as well as sustainability movement leaders, we will show a grassroots effort creating change we NEED to see in the world. This is your opportunity to play a part in a "think globally, act locally" solution that is happening right now while being documented in the Green Light Movie, the Sustainable Oroville Project film. This is not your usual networking event, Stop by anytime between 3pm and 6pm. Stay as long as you like. Get one on one talking time with the thought leader visionaries. Listen to the vision, get questions answered, and see how YOU can intersect your experience, skills, and passion into this movement that is happening in our very own Pacific Northwest region. www.greenlightmovie.com www.sustainableoroville.com www.facebook.com/greenlightmovie Monday, May 2nd @ SOUK office 322 NW 6th Avenue, Suite 200 in Oldtown Chinatown Portland. update Calagator::Event 1250460531 Couchbase Meetup Roll back

description In conjunction with JSConf, Couchbase will be in Portland for this one-time meetup! Our own J. Chris Anderson and Dustin Sallings will be hosting an afternoon event. In this live coding tutorial, they will take you from never having downloaded CouchDB or Couchbase, all the way through to a running jQuery-based real time chat app. We will also have some lightning talks by some of our community members. Thanks to JSConf and Update Portland for helping us put this together. Couchbase is the name of the new NoSQL database company and product family created through the merger of CouchOne and Membase. Couchbase products, which are built on Apache CouchDB, Membase, and memcached open source software, represent the most comprehensive family of data management solutions for building scalable web and mobile applications, with indexing, flexible querying and ease of use that developers love; and elastic clustering, robust storage management and consistently high performance relied on by system administrators and operators. Couchbase is a privately held company funded by Accel Partners, Mayfield Fund, North Bridge Venture Partners and Redpoint Ventures. www.couchbase.com PLEASE RSVP AT http://couchbase-meetup-pdx-erec.eventbrite.com/ In conjunction with JSConf, Couchbase will be in Portland for this one-time meetup! create Calagator::Event 1250460530 OCCA Meeting - Tuesday, May 31, 2011 Roll back

description nil Scott Hanselman will be presenting WebMatrix, a new free tool from Microsoft that allows you to create, customize and publish websites that can grow with you, from design and installation to deployment and maintenance. It is one of the simplest tools for creating web sites that has come along in a long, long time. To get started you can select an application from the built-in gallery, containing such applications as DotNetNuke, Umbraco, WordPress, Drupal or Joomla. Or you can create your own masterpiece from scratch, written in either PHP or ASP.Net. Scott has made presentations to the OCCA before, and has always been well received and appreciated. Scott Hanselman works out of his home office for Microsoft as a Principal Program Manager, aiming to spread good information about developing software, usually on the Microsoft stack. Before this, for over 6 years, he was the Chief Architect at Corillian Corporation, now a part of Checkfree. He was also involved in a few Microsoft Developer things for many years like the MVP and RD programs and he'll speak about computers (and other passions) whenever someone will listen.

During this course you will “learn to see” waste in any process, enabling you to identify opportunities for improving speed, quality, cost, innovation, employee engagement, and customer satisfaction. <h3>Lean operates across three levels of an organization.</h3> * <b>At the individual level</b>, Lean enables people to do their daily work, while improving how they do this work, always with a keen focus on what their customers want. * <b>At the management systems level</b>, Lean focuses on cross-functional activity, breaking down organizational silos, balancing demand and workload so processes flow smoothly. * <b>At the executive level</b>, Lean connects organization strategy with management systems and daily improvement activities, ensuring that everyone in the organization is communicating clearly and focusing on process improvements that yield the greatest benefit to the organization. <h3>You’ll return to your organization with:</h3> * Hands-on experience with fundamental Lean tools and techniques that drive process improvement * The understanding needed to begin investigating the flow of work and information within your organization, identifying opportunities to increase value and reduce waste * A clear comprehension of the value Lean offers in terms of speed, quality, cost, innovation, employee engagement and customer satisfaction, and an ability to articulate that value within the context of your own organization. create Calagator::Event 1250460527 Fluid Design - PDXWeb & Design Roll back

description nil Folks have been talking a lot lately about fluid design... allowing a website to gracefully degrade to very small pixels. Where "min-width" used to be the default, you're now seeing a lot of design starting with "max-width" (friendly for mobile and netbooks). Many tips and tricks around this one, for example: The 100% image trick (for scalable images) Utilizing media queries The 62.5% trick (sets ems to 10px, and use only % and ems) Proper text sizing for both small and large devices using % column widths rather than pixels and much more. Kory has graciously agreed to present this long overdue talk. Anyone who has bits of experience is certainly encouraged to contribute. You don't want to miss this - it's the future of web design!
