People doing strange things with electricity (and code)!
DorkbotPDX is a laid-back meetup and show-and-tell for those who make, modify and use technical tools to weird and imaginative ends. You might run into creative coders, electronic artists, circuit designers, retro computing archaeologists, video game devs, modular synth gearheads and cyberpunk DIYers.
No featured speaker this month, but bring your electronic wonders, monsters, and works-in-progress to show off, or come see what others have been working on! Code or circuits, electronic creativity of all sorts is welcome here.
Table space with power will be available for project show-and-tell; we have a table for drinks and snacks, feel free to contribute to the communal cache/BYOB.
We do this every month, usually on the second Monday night (check the site for upcoming dates to be sure)
Note: If you bring things to give away, please pack out anything that doesn't get claimed! We don't have the space to store unclaimed items.

Let’s get together for an informal BEAM PDX hangout: coffee, conversation, and light co-working.
This is a low-key monthly meetup for folks working with Elixir, Erlang, Gleam, and other BEAM languages, aimed at reconnecting the local community and rebuilding momentum after a long quiet stretch. We'll holding this on the second Thursday of each month.
There will be opportunities to:
- Ask questions about Elixir and other BEAM languages
- Share what you’ve been working on (or stuck on)
- Get help with programming or design problems
- Co-work: get things done with like-minded folks nearby
- Brainstorm ideas for future talk-based meetups and identify potential speakers

Every team has conversations where stakes are high, opinions clash, and silence is just as dangerous as conflict. This interactive workshop gives you practical techniques to facilitate those moments rather than dread them.
In this 90-minute, in-person session at North Bank Innovations at The VIC, members of the Pacific Northwest Facilitators Guild share their go-to methods for keeping tempers cool when hot topics arise. Through hands-on exercises and group discussion, you'll focus on group facilitation (team meetings, cross-functional discussions, leadership off-sites), not one-on-one conflict resolution.
You'll leave with several facilitation techniques for cooling down high-stakes group conversations, plus a simple plan for trying at least one of them out in a meeting sometime in the next two weeks.

Meson is the new build system on the stack and is an alternative to tools such as Autotools and CMake. Since its release in 2013 a number of large software projects such as X.org, Mesa3D, and SystemD have adopted it as their build system of choice.
In this talk, I will provide an introduction to Meson by explaining how it works and what makes it different from other build systems. For developers this may be useful when choosing how to set up your next project. As the scientist who discovered and developed your product, you are the best person in the company to explain the science to other experts in your field. You can close the first round and convince the first hires, usually also scientists. But scientists often fall into the expert trap, when your deep expertise prevents them from connecting with non-experts, like angel investors and non-scientist executives who could become your next hire or your next partner. What made you credible in the lab becomes a liability as the team grows.
This session looks at the specific pattern PhD and MD founders fall into somewhere between fifteen people and sixty: the founder keeps leaning on the science and insists on leading the communications alone, long after the company has outgrown that approach. Better Futures Club is a weekly event (alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays) focused on imagining and making better futures.
Imagine an artist community, a think tank, and a research center in the same building. People in all of those fields working alongside each other imagining and creating different futures together. Cross pollination and inspiration. Liberal Arts and STEM and R&D. Photographers, physicists, authors, astronomers, musicians, makers, mathematicians, designers, developers, fashionistas, climatologists and all manner of imaginative optimists.

Join us for the SNAP Specs PDX Meetup. The group focuses on the wearable AR glasses, SPECS 27 (https://www.specs.com), being released by SNAP in Q4 2026. The group is open to all - developers, designers, enthusiasts. All are welcome!
For this first meetup, we'll be covering the public launch event on September 16th in California. Several of the members of this meetup group will be in attendance and will provide an overview of the launch event and follow-up developer day. We'll also be discuss planning for the SPECS Hackathon after the release of the device.
