Historically, semiconductor startups have had massive development costs & long development cycles. A fabless semiconductor has to typically raise > $50M with a development and time to volume cycle that lasts 3-4 years or more. Has this changed in the light of current advances in technology?

Founders of semiconductor startups often come from an engineering background. What business challenges do these founders face?

Financial, Business and Estate Planning Strategies for Business Owners Diana Wojcik, patent valuation analyst (more info)

Covering incorporation choices, valuations, tax strategy, and continuity/succession plans, Diana will illustrate different options available to business owners and explain the costs, risks, and benefits of each, to help business owners plan ahead to maximize their gains and minimize their risks. Getting it all Wrong: How I learned to Love the Lean Startup Leo Frishberg, UX strategist (more info)

The Lean Startup takes an "action first" approach to exploring products, markets and business models. In theory this approach makes a lot of sense, but in practice it is fraught with challenges. In his talk, Frishberg leads the group through a couple of case studies in which the business got almost everything wrong, and was all the better because of it.

Going “circular” refers to the necessary change from our current take-make-waste linear economy to a borrow-use-return circular economy (sometimes also referred to as the zero-waste or cradle-to-cradle economy).

The key takeaway message from Closing the Loop is that moving to a circular economy is not only essential and urgent, but also entirely possible, if we take inspiration from the pioneers, such as those featured in the film, and scale up similar business models, product innovations and customer solutions around the world.

It will not be easy – and there is no “one size fits all” approach, as the varied experiences across three continents show – but the circular economy revolution is imperative. As presenter Dr Visser puts it:

EMA is Launching the New Year with Our January Networking Social

Be Social! Whether you’re new to the electronics manufacturing industry, or have been part of the EMA or ERA for years, you’re welcome to join us in kicking off a successful 2019. The evening starts at 5:00PM, with important announcements about our leadership, upcoming events, and the 2019 agenda.

Details This event is co-organized by the Electronics Manufacturers Association (EMA) and the Oregon Chapter of the Electronics Representatives Association (ERA). When you arrive, you will receive a ticket for a free beer or wine. Additional drinks may be purchased normally.

The Electronics Manufacturing Association (www.ema-oregon.org) is hosting its 19th Annual NEDME (NW Electronics Design & Manufacturing Expo) to support Oregon/SW WA electronics & design and their supply chains. There will be tech sessions led by experts in electronics, design, manufacturing and business throughout the day, exhibitors, lunch, networking and many opportunities to obtain information about the industry.

There are a few spots open for exhibitors if you are in electronics or manufacturing and attendee registration is now open. Attendance is $5 or 3 cans of non-perishable food. 100% of attendance proceeds is donated to the Oregon Food Bank. The EMA will also reimburse TriMet tickets.

There is a student discount. Must provide student ID at the door. The EMA is a nonprofit industry association that represents the Oregon and SW WA electronics and design community.
