TiE Oregon: Semiconductor Entrepreneurship - Opportunities & Challenges
Intel Ronler Acres RA1 Auditorium

What are the challenges facing semiconductor startups in today’s environment?

Is it enough to have developed a great technology?

Historically, semiconductor startups have had massive development costs & long development cycles. A fabless semiconductor has to typically raise > $50M with a development and time to volume cycle that lasts 3-4 years or more. Has this changed in the light of current advances in technology?

Founders of semiconductor startups often come from an engineering background. What business challenges do these founders face?

Our panel, constituted of Steve Sharp, Chairman Triquint & past CEO of Triquint Semiconductor, Howard Bubb, CEO Ambric & Manpreet Khaira, CEO Avnera will address these and other important issues related to the viability of the fabless semiconductor startups in the new millennium.

The panel will be moderated by Scott Keeney, CEO & Co-founder nLight, a manufacturer of semiconductor lasers

Register online at www.oregon.tie.org Online Registration: Members: $15; Non-Members: $25 Walkin registration is $5 more for both Members & Non-Members.

EMA Trade Talk
Golden Valley Brewing

EMA & ERA Talk Trade on May 24. Join Us.

We are excited to present our first seminar of the year. Join us for a fun, informative evening featuring talks from three industry pros. Their combined topic is from an Idea to a Product: How to Start and Grow Your Business. Take Your Business to the Next Level

This event is geared towards patent based businesses and start-ups, inventors, and people looking at new ventures in electronics manufacturing. The format is casual, with opportunities to network before and after. Hors d'oeuvres and a no-host bar are available, so grab a beer and stay awhile. Meet People & Grow Your Network

We expect lots of faces from the electronics manufacturing industry, so be sure to bring your business cards. This is an excellent opportunity to meet new faces and reconnect with colleagues.

Three Expert Speakers

An Introduction to Intellectual Property Dr. Laura Zager, patent attorney (more info)

"I've got a great idea for a business name, and just printed it on 3000 mugs!" "I think I need to get a patent so I'll be clear to make and sell my product." "Of course I own my company's logo—I paid a graphic designer to create it!" All of these statements represent misunderstandings of intellectual property law, which can trip up even the most conscientious of business owners. This talk will give a quick overview of the key areas of intellectual property law in the US, and will use case studies and examples to flag some of the most common pitfalls.

Financial, Business and Estate Planning Strategies for Business Owners Diana Wojcik, patent valuation analyst (more info)

Covering incorporation choices, valuations, tax strategy, and continuity/succession plans, Diana will illustrate different options available to business owners and explain the costs, risks, and benefits of each, to help business owners plan ahead to maximize their gains and minimize their risks. Her talk will mainly address the needs of businesses based on patent or other IP, manufacturing, tech advisory/consulting, and privately owned businesses.

Getting it all Wrong: How I learned to Love the Lean Startup Leo Frishberg, UX strategist (more info)

The Lean Startup takes an "action first" approach to exploring products, markets and business models. In theory this approach makes a lot of sense, but in practice it is fraught with challenges. In his talk, Frishberg leads the group through a couple of case studies in which the business got almost everything wrong, and was all the better because of it.

Documentary Screening: Closing the Loop - A Film About the Circular Economy Revolution
PSU Smith Memorial Student Union

Join us for a screening of this inspiring film about the future of business, and how business can change the future of our planet. Created by author, filmmaker, and professor, Dr. Wayne Visser, this film takes an optimistic viewpoint to climate change and innovative solutions. Date and Time: June 28, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Location: PSU: Smith Memorial Student Union: Parkway North 1825 SW Broadway, Portland, OR 97201

Cost: $5

Going “circular” refers to the necessary change from our current take-make-waste linear economy to a borrow-use-return circular economy (sometimes also referred to as the zero-waste or cradle-to-cradle economy).

The key takeaway message from Closing the Loop is that moving to a circular economy is not only essential and urgent, but also entirely possible, if we take inspiration from the pioneers, such as those featured in the film, and scale up similar business models, product innovations and customer solutions around the world.

It will not be easy – and there is no “one size fits all” approach, as the varied experiences across three continents show – but the circular economy revolution is imperative. As presenter Dr Visser puts it:

“If we don’t solve this one problem [i.e. moving from a linear to a circular economy], everything else we do, no matter how well-intentioned it is, will be like shifting deck chairs on the Titanic.”

“After years spent working on sustainability, I am convinced that we are on the cusp of a major revolution – nothing short of the next industrial revolution. The time for fear-mongering and demonising companies has past. Now is the time for innovative solutions and positive action. This is nowhere more true than in the do-or-die challenge of creating a circular economy.”

“We still have much work to do, but our task could not be more clear. So get inspired and, to quote Gandhi – a sustainability luminary before his time – be the change you want to see in the world.”

Stay afterward for a brief discussion about the circular economy and how you can apply these powerful principles to your life and business.

For more information about the film, you can visit www.ClosingtheLoopFilm.com.

Event is co-sponsored by Consious Capitalism Portland and MonicaBourgeau.com.
