TiE Oregon: Semiconductor Entrepreneurship - Opportunities & Challenges
Intel Ronler Acres RA1 Auditorium

What are the challenges facing semiconductor startups in today’s environment?

Is it enough to have developed a great technology?

Historically, semiconductor startups have had massive development costs & long development cycles. A fabless semiconductor has to typically raise > $50M with a development and time to volume cycle that lasts 3-4 years or more. Has this changed in the light of current advances in technology?

Founders of semiconductor startups often come from an engineering background. What business challenges do these founders face?

Our panel, constituted of Steve Sharp, Chairman Triquint & past CEO of Triquint Semiconductor, Howard Bubb, CEO Ambric & Manpreet Khaira, CEO Avnera will address these and other important issues related to the viability of the fabless semiconductor startups in the new millennium.

The panel will be moderated by Scott Keeney, CEO & Co-founder nLight, a manufacturer of semiconductor lasers

Reaching the Tipping Point in Energy Monitoring
Intel Ronler Acres RA1 Auditorium

Monitoring your Energy Footprint

Smart Devices and information systems to help people make better choices about how they use energy are in the early stage of adoption. While many home energy monitoring solutions have been introduced in recent years, no products or services have emerged that have brought about a significant change in consumer behavior. While many devices are technologically sophisticated or cool to look at it seems there is still a need for new innovations and better ways to motivate users to make a lasting change in their energy footprint. The challenge for product developers and entrepreneurs is the development of a comprehensive energy monitoring system for homes that is compelling, easy to use and effective.

The Prius dashboard is a good example of a system that is making a real difference in consumer behavior. By providing information to a user on mileage and energy performance it is motivating people to change their driving style. We need to explore ways in which we can have a similar impact on managing one’s personal energy lifestyle. How do you create energy monitoring devices with intuitive interfaces and automatic functions that customers can easily integrate into their daily life? How will consumers be informed about what is possible and how will energy utilities, governments, agencies, or retail channels work to supply the demand? What other issues must be overcome before we see mass adoption of smart energy management devices. We will explore these issues and hear from manufacturers of existing products so that participants can leave with a better understanding of energy monitoring opportunities and challenges.

OWASP: Add TAL, improve a threat model!
WebMD

Add TAL, improve a threat model!

To improve your (threat) modeling career, you need a better (threat) agent (library)! Threat modeling is a process for capturing, organizing, and analyzing the security of a system based on the perspective of a threat agent. Threat modeling enables informed decision-making about application security risk. In addition to producing a model, typical threat modeling efforts also produce a prioritized list of security improvements to the concept, requirements, design, or implementation. In 2009, OWASP posted wiki pages on threat modeling. Although there was the start of a section on threat agents, it has yet to be completed.

Intel developed a unique standardized threat agent library (TAL) that provides a consistent, up-to-date reference describing the human agents that pose threats to IT systems and other information assets. Instead of picking threat agents based on vendor recommendations and space requirements in Powerpoint, the TAL produces a repeatable, yet flexible enough for a range of risk assessment uses. We will cover both the TAL, the Threat Agent Risk Assessment (TARA), how they can be used to improve threat modeling.

Jira in Action: Software Development & Project Management
CENTRL East Side Location

Two Jira users walk into a bar... What do they find? Each other and a whole lot of ways to use Jira to solve problems. This month two local users will share how they use Jira and other products to collaborate and manage internal projects from technical to business. Come to learn from their successes, failures, and everything in between. Ask questions and collaborate; our hope is that you'll walk away with answers to your burning challenges, or at least feel like you have a local Bat-line to call for help.

We'll also report out on the latest from Atlassian, including announcements from Summit in San Jose. If you attended, we'd love for you to share your most-memorable moment and what you learned.
