STREAM PDX 24-Hour Podcast Challenge
Roll back
| description |
## Create, record, edit, produce and premiere an episode of your podcast... in 24 hours!
So you want to start a podcast? Come to the STREAM PDX 24-Hour Podcast Challenge! Kick off the creation of your podcast by creating the first episode here in just 24 hours, and premiere it at the launch party on Saturday evening!
### Friday December 9 & Saturday December 10, 2016
The 24-Hour Podcast Challenge brings together people passionate about telling great stories through audio. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out, the Podcast Challenge is the perfect event for making your dream a reality or just having fun!
Bring a team, find partners at the Friday night kickoff party, or work solo.
## How it works
On Friday night, we'll give an overview of the next 24 hours, and share some simple tips you can use to get started on your podcast episode. You can record on your phones, borrow field recorders, or book time in the STREAM PDX studio! Remember, simply using a better microphone won't help you tell a better story.
By dinner Saturday evening, the showcase begins and the fun continues! You'll finish editing the episode by 5pm, submit it for the evening show, and then relax and enjoy the rest of the night! Starting at 7pm the event is open to the public, and we'll premiere each team's podcast episode! Invite your friends to hear your creation and enjoy food and drinks!

The holiday party got rescheduled to January 12th because of the snow day. We did have a mini-party, with multiple courses of: pizza tarts, pizza puffs, and onion tarts, with wine. We had a paper airplane contest (for distance). The disco ball was on, and we listened to James Brown. But January 12th will be the actual holiday party.

Join Nike Digital for the next event in our Nike Tech Talks series on Thursday, December 8th from 4:30-6:30pm!
Building Modern Data Pipelines
James Ward | Principal Platform Evangelist | Salesforce.com
Our modern systems are no longer just simple CRUD apps. We now need to deal with massive, distributed, real-time data systems that ingest potentially terabytes of data, support real-time and batch analytics, do machine learning, and support a host of web and mobile app interfaces. This session will walk through architectural patterns and technologies for building these modern data pipelines. You will learn about Apache Kafka, a variety of databases, and data processing frameworks like Spark.
RSVP at: https://niketechtalksdec2016.splashthat.com.
We hope to see you at the event and encourage you to invite your colleagues. If you have any questions, please contact [email protected] |

From Coraline to Kubo: A history of LAIKA's Films
Roll back
| description |

(NOTE: This is the 2nd post as the first was deleted. LAIKA has presented at TechFestNW multiple times. Their films, imho are a marvel of engineering and design. As a member of the tech community, I believe it fits here.)
Mark Shapiro of LAIKA, the studio behind Coraline, Kubo & the Two Strings, The Boxtrolls, and ParaNorman. Mark Shapiro from LAIKA will present how these beloved oscar-nominated films are made by hand — from script to illustrations to stop-motion animation. It's a painstaking labor of love that produces an average of two seconds of footage in an week.
Mark will also give you an intimate look behind the curtain of LAIKA's biggest stars — the puppets, of course! He'll bring an armature and other stop-motion film goodies with him.
All proceeds benefit Cerimon House, a non profit arts and humanities org.

Coderetreat.org is a self-organized, volunteer-led organization dedicated to enabling software developers to help each other improve their craft and teaming skills. Software developers of all sorts gather with their machines, IDEs and the ready-to-code Conway's Game of Life. A Coderetreat facilitator assists the developers during several 45-minute sessions throughout the day. Tanya Crenshaw and Jean Richardson will be teaming up to facilitate this Coderetreat. Tech Academy is donating space and providing breakfast and lunch for the event.
Come along for a day of codeplay in a supportive environment and help Coderetreat follow the sun during the global celebration of software development!
If you were there in October, we look forward to seeing you again. If you missed that event, grab your laptop, your favorite IDE, and come along. In response to feedback from the last session, we’ll be starting at 9am this time. Yes, we listen.
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering: educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

Galois tech talk: E3DB – Tozny’s End-to-End Encrypted Database
Roll back
| description |

→ |
# abstract:
Project E3DB is a tool for programmers who want to build an end-to-end encrypted database with sharing into their projects. We are providing a command-line client for you to play with and a Java SDK to prototype with. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be getting feedback from you, adding features, and making it ready for production.
In this talk, Isaac will discuss what E3DB is, where it’s going, and provide a tutorial for trying it out. Bring your laptop to try!
More on E3DB: https://tozny.com/blog/announcing-project-e3db-the-end-to-end-encrypted-database/
Tozny is a Galois product spin-off. Our mission is to make strong crypto easy for both developers and end users.
# bio:
Isaac is a security researcher at Galois where he has lead authentication and collaboration projects for the DoD and IC. Isaac earned his master’s degree in Cybersecurity from the University of Maryland, University College, and his B.S. in Computer Science from Ohio State University. In 2013, Isaac founded Tozny, a Galois spin-off company aimed at solving the password conundrum. Easier and more secure than passwords, Tozny replaces passwords with an easy-to-use cryptographic key on a user’s mobile phone. |
