Creating the Future of AI: Not Just for Silicon Valley Pt 2.
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Forge is pleased to announce the second set of presenters in its monthly series on AI Morality, scheduled for November 15, from 6:30-8:00 pm: Steve Taylor from The College of Robotics and Eric Brickenstein an attorney at Hagland-Kelley LLP.
Steve will talk about where he sees the future of robotics going and how robots will interact with AI in the very near future. We are already seeing examples of robots using machine learning to learn from each other in order to better accomplish factory jobs, and as we move closer to AI, robots and machines will become increasingly autonomous from human input or control.
Eric will frame in broad strokes the fields of legal inquiry that may emerge as AI begins to have the ability to ‘think’ and ‘reason.’ Eric will address issues of privacy and how data can be collected; discuss briefly the potential for any legal framework to govern the development of future AI; and broach the topic of machine rights and a theoretical framework for considering when rights might attach to certain types of machines.
Our last discussion posed 4 questions: How is AI and AI morality defined? What are the dangers and opportunities associated with AI? What about our relationship to technology will always be true? And what about our relationship to technology will likely change as AI develops?
This session we will consider 4 new questions in small group/break out format.
Tickets are limited to 50 participants and sold out in a week for our 1st session. Beer will be provided.

PDX Women In Tech (PDXWIT) Seasoned Women in Tech
Roll back
| description |
RSVP here - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-seasoned-women-in-tech-tickets-29213800263
Are you a woman with 25 or more years of experience working in technology? Are you interested in an affinity group for women like you? Have you noticed that it can be difficult to find women in tech who are still in there swinging? PDXWIT is partnering with Jean Richardson to create a group for women like you.
In defiance of the infographics that show we disappear after age 50, we will be coming together at Apex Clearing to build and strengthen connections and face forward to the future we want.
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering: educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

Looking for space to work after 6pm, that's not your home or office, hymn space is just the place.
Hymn Space is the startup that opens coffee shops after hours on a subscription basis so we (the creative community) can connect, work, and mellow out in a comfortable, yet focused environment.
It's like a cozy ground floor co-working space that is open when being creatively fit is most challenging, and puts us in an environment where we can actively and passively lean on each other for the extra push forward... with free coffee and wine to seal the deal.
Stop by and enjoy a night or two on us.

I want to work for _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (this month is RazorFish)

For Novembers 'I want to work for_______' meetup we are excited to have with us Brynn Dirksen - Associate Art Director at Razorfish. She specializes in UX design and we look forward to hearing her thoughts and her journey in the digital marketing space.
An excerpt of her journey in her own words -
"While I started my career in the design industry working on print projects, after joining Razorfish as an Art Director, I dove deep into the world of digital design. As a digital agency Razorfish has a large UX department, and from the get-go I was interested in this "experience-based” take on design. Razorfish encourages employees to experiment with other disciplines, and when I started exploring, UX opportunities immediately opened up for me. I had always enjoyed visual design but once experience design was thrown into the mix, the design problems I had once found interesting became truly fascinating. Jumping on the chance to expand my skill set lead me from a job I enjoyed, to one that I’m truly passionate about." |

The Starfih Throwers - Everything Big Starts Small
Roll back
| description |

Worlds apart, a five-star chef, a twelve year-old girl, and a retired schoolteacher discover how their individual efforts to feed the poor ignite a movement in the fight against hunger. This documentary tells tale of these remarkable individuals and the unexpected challenges they face. Despite being constantly reminded that hunger is far too big for one person to solve, they persevere and see their impact ripple further than their individual actions.
Award-winning chef Narayanan Krishnan, fighting against the caste system in India, quits his job to begin a life of cooking and hand-delivering fresh meals to hundreds of people in his hometown. Katie Stagliano’s planting of a single cabbage seedling when she was nine years old blossoms into Katie’s Krops, a nonprofit with 73 gardens dedicated to ending hunger. Retired middle school teacher Mr. Law battles personal health issues as he hand delivers more than a thousand sandwiches nightly to the hungry in Minneapolis. This documentary tells the tale of these remarkable individuals and the challenges they face when upholding their values and forging their own path of service to others.

Coffee w/ Co-Founders @ Urban Grind
Roll back

The next meetup will be at Urban Grind Coffee Shop. We'll take the corner area just near the front door.
The format is pretty laid back. Come by, grab a cup of coffee, and network with other business owners who are working on incredible projects. We can't wait to hear what you're working on!
About Coffee w/ Co-Founders: As a business owner you are faced with many challenges. You're forced to make decisions every day that could make or break your business. Coffee w/ Co-Founders is a way to network with other Entrepreneurs to allow free flowing information with the intent to collaborate and help each other. So often we're challenged and there's very little we can do to express our challenges with the people we work with or the people we care about. Think of Coffee w/ Co-Founders as your own personal support group for business owners. We're all here to help! |

Tonight, our Emacs Hangout will feature *two* talks (one oriented to less experienced Emacsians):
• First, **Matthew Hoselton** will continue where he left off to give the next part in his series of Programming in Emacs Lisp. The first part covered primitives, and this next part will cover more interesting data structures like associative lists as well as buffers and windows.
• Next, **Cyd** will give a presentation on using Emacs to develop **Haskell** projects. A partially completed project, Emacs config, and instructions will be provided before the talk. A Docker image will be provided for those who do not want to install all of the required tools. Packages (briefly) demonstrated will be intero, haskell-mode, haskell-snippets, hlint-refactor, flycheck, company, and projectile. Topics covered will be: automatic type and style checking, type signature insertion, inspecting type and info of thing at point, automatic refactoring using compiler and lint suggestions, yasnippet templates, jumping to definitions (including 3rd party definitions), loading the current buffer into the REPL, and running tests.
Hope to see you all there! |

#AI is comping! Are you ready? The story of “Self-Driving Datacenter”\ \
There is no doubt that Machine Learning finds space in every home today, but what do we know about it and how to apply? During this presentation I will cover:
+ What do we think ML is vs what it is really?
+ Why ML is the right solution using IT operations as an example?
+ How do you build a “self-driving datacenter” using the open tools near you?
+ Where do we go next?
*Sergey Razin is the CTO, Ph.D. in CompSci, engineer by nature, and very passionate about technology. He is a founding member and contributor to a number of successful open source projects in the area of machine learning, semantics, and signal processing, including Sphinx, Boost STL, Asterisk, Pidgin, and Mahout. Sergey has over 15 years of experience in the area of analytics and machine learning where he pioneered application of such in the areas of IT security, media and speech recognition with 10 innovation disclosures in data science, signal processing, speech technologies, and communication protocols. For the past several years Sergey concentrated on applying machine learning to revolutionize IT operations in emerging areas of cloud, virtualization, distributed systems, and software defined datacenter.*
#How Did Artificial Intelligence Win at Go and So What?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems have achieved a number of high-profile victories over top humans in a variety of competitions, including Chess (Deep Blue) and Jeopardy (Watson). In contrast, until recently, the ancient game of Go remained an elusive challenge for AI, with many researchers believing that victories over top humans would be decades away.
In March 2016, the program AlphaGo, developed by DeepMind, surprised the research community by defeating the legendary Go professional, Lee Sedol, in a five game match. This achievement was made possible by the integration of several recent AI technologies and a high-performance computing infrastructure. In this talk, I will paint a picture of the main developments leading to AlphaGo and how those developments can have a reach beyond the game of Go.
*Alan Fern is a Professor of Computer Science and Associate Head of Research for the School of EECS at Oregon State University. He received his Ph.D (2004) and M.S (2000) in Computer Engineering from Purdue University under the direction of Robert Givan, and his B.S (1997) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maine. His research interests span a range of topics in artificial intelligence, including machine learning and automated planning, with a particular interest in work falling at their intersection. He is also interested in applications of AI, including AI for real-time strategy games, security, robotics, public policy, and activity recognition from video of American football and other sports. Fern is a recipient of a National Science Foundation Early CAREER Award, has won a number of best paper awards in top AI venues, and is associate editor for the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research, Machine Learning Journal, and the Artificial Intelligence Journal. He is also interested in applications of AI, including AI for real-time strategy games, robotics, public policy, and activity recognition from video of American football and other sports.*

#AI is comping! Are you ready? The story of “Self-Driving Datacenter”\s\s

The story of “Self-Driving Datacenter”
There is no doubt that Machine Learning finds space in every home today, but what do we know about it and how to apply? During this presentation I will cover:
+What do we think ML is vs what it is really?
+Why ML is the right solution using IT operations as an example?
+How do you build a “self-driving datacenter” using the open tools near you?
+Where do we go next?

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Happy Hour Networking Event
Roll back
| description |
RSVP here - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-happy-hour-networking-event-tickets-28871226616
Join us for happy hour at Free Geek! Did you know November 29th is Giving Tuesday?! There's not better way to spend it than with your two favorite non-profits!
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 with the goal of sharing important announcements and showcasing women in our community who are doing great things!
Introduction to Free Geek, including what they do and how you can support them!
Learn how Entrepreneur Spotlight, Kristen Gallagher, took her love of educating others and turned it into a business supporting technology companies to use learning to reach their goals. What resulted was her company Edify.
A brief talk by Jenny Stoffel, a Word Press developer, on turning your passion into a self-sustaining freelance business.

ESP8266 for Beginners
The ESP8266 allows you to create small microcontroller based projects that can be controlled via web interfaces. So you can control your project from your phone with a nice UI! Meaning you can get your project running faster because you don't have to create a full hardware UI for your project. We'll get the Arduino IDE up and running and try a few different programming options. We'll be programming the NodeMcu. This is a beginner class.
Instructor: Thomas Hudson
Sunday November 13th, Noon to 3pm at
Ctrl-H, 7608 N. Interstate, Portland, OR 97217
Cost: $25 goes to Ctrl-H and cost of hardware
RSVP required! Limited to 15 people! RSVP to [email protected] |
