description nil RSVP HERE - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdxwit-presents-a-book-talk-daring-greatly-being-wrong-tickets-29825019436 Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks, and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable or to dare greatly. In Daring Greatly, based on twelve years of pioneering research, Dr. Brené Brown dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and argues that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage. Similarly, in Being Wrong, journalist Kathryn Schulz argues that error is the fundamental human condition and should be celebrated as such. In this view, error is both a given and a gift – one that can transform our worldviews, our relationships, and, most profoundly, ourselves. Daring Greatly and Being Wrong were made for each other. Join Deeple Patel and Melody Dawn for a discussion and exploration of these two powerful books and their endless takeaways. Most of us avoid the topics of being wrong and vulnerable, but these two authors have laid out the undeniable reasons for why it is so beneficial for us to push past this fear and discomfort. Whether you read one, both or some portion of these books, you are welcome in the conversation. Come ready to share your unique perspective and learn from others’ experiences. RSVP HERE - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdxwit-presents-a-book-talk-daring-greatly-being-wrong-tickets-29825019436 PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering: educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

create Calagator::Event 1250471125 Elixir Games PDX - Learning to Love Property Tax Roll back

description nil Many developers are probably familiar with unit-testing, and probably a few even rigorously utilize it, but software validation exists on a spectrum ranging from formal verification to nothing at all. Unit-testing tends to reside a lot closer to the empty abyss side of that spectrum in-practice, so what methods and tools can we use to start inching (centimetering, for the internationally inclined) closer to the other side? To get to a point where we're brimming with confidence about our design and implementation? Property-Based Testing can be the next step on that journey, and this month we'll take a look at one of Elixir's PBT frameworks and use it to validate a bit of code. For the newcomers, the "Games" format is designed to create a bit of friendly competition and is accessible for all ranges of experience; beginners and pros alike. If you'd like to take a look at the previous sessions' exercises feel free to check them out here: https://github.com/elixir-pdx/, some submitted solutions are available on non-master branches. Early in this series we'll be focusing mostly on solving problems in a functional paradigm, and as the series continues over time we'll move more and more toward Elixir's differentiators; Erlang interop, hygienic macros, & OTP patterns. If all that read like gibberish to you, don't worry you don't have to know any of that jargon, and by the time you do everything will already make sense. Because we'll introduce ideas and concepts in a way that will help you understand those things conceptually before you ever need a weird name for them. Food and drinks will be provided. Please make sure you come with a computer to work on and have Elixir pre-installed locally or in a VM and ready to go. http://elixir-lang.org/install.html Special thanks to our friends at Puppet, ‘the leader in IT automation’, for hosting us.

create Calagator::Event 1250471120 AgilePDX Dntn Pub Lunch: Stakeholder Distraction Got You Down? Roll back

description nil Agile Stakeholders (product owners, product managers, and the like) are key to success, but with customer visits, conferences, product alignment meetings, and staffing constraints they are rarely 100% dedicated to one team. So what do you do when the stakeholders should be more involved? Once you've tried tantrumming, threatening, begging and pleading, point your feet toward Ringler's on the first Friday in December and just keeping coming until you get here. There's beer and folks who have been where you are now. Have sit and join in the chat. We've got salve for your wounds, and stories to tell. Bring your friends. Bring your stakeholders. It's Friday, and well, we're all on the same side, for better or worse. Those who've figured stakeholder engagement out and those who're ready to give up--perforce. See you at Ringler's from 12p to 1p. You can come late but come in quiet as a bunny rabbit as we'll be under full steam by 12:05. We'll be in the back. RSVP's welcome, but not required, at [email protected]. It helps us know whether to move the furniture.

description nil RSVP here - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdxwit-presents-love-is-art-what-now-tickets-29583802951 PDX Women in Tech is and always will be an inclusive and supportive organization. As a result of the recent Presidential election, many of our members raised their fears and concerns regarding what negative impacts may arise in our communities, cities and nation. We are coming together to create art inspired by inclusion and love, while we discuss what's next, including how we can organize ourselves to provide support for those that need it. We will kick off the event at 5pm with food and Meg Aul, the PDXWIT Event Activities Director, will begin the art project. Megan Bigelow will lead the discussion beginning at 5:30. Feel free to arrive at anytime. PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

update Calagator::Event 1250471075 Let's talk about NAMESPACES Roll back

description In this session, Austin will lead a discussion around a single aspect of Clojure. This will not be a lecture! Everyone is invited to share their questions and experience. The main ideas are to discuss something relevant to everyone interested in Clojure, and to provide a forum for beginners and experienced users to comfortably participate and share knowledge. Subtopics may include: Syntax. Namespaced keywords. Best practices. Opinions about :refer :all. Organizational conventions. Using require outside of a ns declaration. Clojure vs. Clojurescript. Excluding symbols from clojure.core. Where to put your specs. And anything else that piques your interest. Curious about Clojure? Have questions about Emacs or Cursive or Vim or Spacemacs or anything else? Come on out and we'll help. Office hours are a great place to chat with other developers and help or get help with any questions that come up. Everyone is always welcomed regardless of skill or experience. If you are curious come on out.
