Strata: Portraits of Humanity features cave diving and Roman villa
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Friends and colleagues: See archaeologists dive on a submerged cave in the Philippines and watch English excavators uncover a Roman villa in the November 2016 edition of Strata: Portraits of Humanity, available online and on TV:
(1) Archaeologists dive on Marigondon Cave, best known as one of the most famous diving spots in Cebu City, Philippines. It would have been above sea level during the last glacial periods of 22,000 and 38,000 BP so it could have been inhabited then. (2) Archaeologists carried out excavations over the summer of 2014 on the route to bypass Cannington, a town in West Somerset, England. They found the remains of three Roman buildings, including a high-status villa complete with under-floor heating and evidence of painted wall plaster and a slate roof.
Unlike any other show available anywhere, Strata is a fresh monthly showcase for unique, captivating and diverse stories about our cultural heritage from an archaeological perspective. We have a video promo for the show at http://youtu.be/81RLqBhKd4A. Check it out!
You can see this monthly half-hour show on our nonprofit streaming-media Web site, The Archaeology Channel (http://www.archaeologychannel.org) as well as on cable TV in cities across the US and even in Serbia. Strata program details can be found at. The growing list of cable TV stations carrying the show is available at http://www.archaeologychannel.org/video-guide/strata-portraits-of-humanity/184-additional-articles/1963-strata-portraits-of-humanity-on-cable-tv. They include placement in the local on-demand menu of Comcast Cable in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and California.

This month we're going to switch things up just a bit; it will be our last meetup of 2016 so let make it a little more casual and get together at Pints!
This Thursday will be all about the OpenStack Summit in Barcelona. Clark Boylan, Christopher Aedo (and an additional surprise guest or two) will lead a discussion of all the fun from Barcelona. We will talk about both the marketing side of the summit as well as the dev side, including the conversations (and controversy?) around the new "Project Team Gatherings" coming next year.
If you missed out on Barcelona, please join us for a fun update and conversation! |

Beer of Trust Key-Signing
Roll back
| description |
"Beer of Trust" is a key signing party with beer!
## What's a key-signing party?
A key-signing party is a get-together with PGP users for the purpose of meeting other PGP users and signing each other's keys. This helps to extend the "web of trust" to a great degree. Also, it sometimes serves as a forum to discuss strong cryptography and related issues.
## What if I don't have a key yet?
If you don't have a PGP key yet, this is a good chance to get your feet wet. If you bring a computer, you can generate a test key at the event and experiment with sending messages to others there. It can be helpful to have someone present to walk you through the process the first time. It is recommended that you only generate a test key at the event, and later generate your real key in private. See below for links to some helpful resources for securely generating a key.
## What do I need for this party?
Required Items:
* A picture ID or some other way for people to match you to your identity
* Your key ID, key type, hex fingerprint, and key size. You can print out slips of paper to hand out your key info if you'd like.
* A pen/pencil or whatever you'd like to write with
* A computer is not required, and it is not recommended to use your computer to sign keys at the event
At the event, you'll meet others, confirm their key ID in person, and swap key IDs with them. Later when you get home, you can download the full keys and sign them, then upload the signature to the keyserver or email it to them directly.
Some useful links for generating and backing up your key can be found [here](http://pin13.net/BoT/2016-11-21/).

UX NIGHT SCHOOL: Envisioning and Acting - A Community Workshop
Roll back
| description |

→ |
What changes after the 2016 elections? How do folks from the design and tech communities come together to fight the good fight? How do we learn how to help?
In this workshop, we’ll work with both ideas and actions, by joining with community partners to envision, plan, scope and scale a User Experience project.
We’ll begin by discussing problems and needs with our stakeholders, using the Envisioning Cards toolkit from the Value Sensitive Design Lab at UW. We’ll then explore User Experience methods and tactics using IDEO’s method cards. Lastly, we’ll plan deliverables, discuss resourcing, and create a budget for our project.
Workshop is limited to 10 participants. We'll have plenty of time for discussion and exploration.
Participants will receive a copy of the UX Night School Field Notebook and our UX Project Planning and Methods Guides to use in their own work. Snacks and beverages will be provided. |

IoT Hackathon
Roll back
| description |
Join us the weekend of Dec. 2nd-4th for our very first IoT Hackathon! The theme is Sustainable Cities; we are looking for ways to minimize the required inputs of energy, water and food. On a smaller scale, how can we preserve energy and prevent wasteful consumption in the home and/or at work?
We are thrilled to be partnering up with Intel to bring you the Intel Edison hardware kits to play with and build cool apps. Other sponsors for the event include Simple, Airbnb, Mozilla, Metal Toad, Donut.js, and PolySync.
The goal of the hackathon is to learn new programming skills, have fun, and work in teams to build sustainability solutions. We want to provide a space for people of all backgrounds to learn about IoT, work on a new portfolio project, or spend all weekend tinkering with hardware. All levels are welcome! You will be working in teams of 3-5 to come up with the next great solution for Sustainable Cities!
**WHO SHOULD ATTEND**
Developers, designers, and all those interested in the Internet of Things should attend. All skill levels welcome.

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Happy Hour Networking Event
Roll back
| description |
RSVP here - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-happy-hour-networking-event-tickets-28871226616
Join us for happy hour at Free Geek! Did you know November 29th is Giving Tuesday?! There's not better way to spend it than with your two favorite non-profits!
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 with the goal of sharing important announcements and showcasing women in our community who are doing great things!
Introduction to Free Geek, including what they do and how you can support them!
Learn how Entrepreneur Spotlight, Kristen Gallagher, took her love of educating others and turned it into a business supporting technology companies to use learning to reach their goals. What resulted was her company Edify.
A brief talk by Jenny Stoffel, WordPress Developer and Consultant, about the anatomy of a 'typical' freelance day.
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering: educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. |
