Join us for happy hour at Digital Trends to celebrate PDXWIT's 5 Year Anniversary!
For our first event in 2017 and in honor of our anniversary, the theme of the event is reflecting on how your life has changed over the last five years. We will hear more about this from our lightning speakers and use this concept as our networking conversational prompt.
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase women in our community who are doing great things.
Introduction to Digital Trends, including what they do and what jobs they are hiring for.
Meet entrepreneur Paige Hendrix Buckner, who went from teaching and directing public policy to founding a company that ensures businesses can easily gift locally-sourced items to their clients, at her company ClientJoy.
A talk by Maarika Krumhansl, a mother of a young daughter and a Release Manager at Jama Software, about how she is a mama in tech.
Remember, throughout the event we will have an activity table for people who want to create during the event. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing.
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events. |

CHIFOO presents "Now That’s Risky Business – Selling UX To The Security Techies" with Andrew Sweany, Tripwire!

About the Speaker
Andrew (@andrewsweany) began as a Human Factors Engineer at Intel in 2000 and since that time has completed countless user research activities on a huge range of products (software, hardware, web/desk, tablet, & mobile) across the entire life cycle (from emerging concepts to well established enterprise and consumer products).

CHIFOO presents "Designers Stop Learning Code; Coders Stop Learning Design: A Better Solution to Improving Team (mis)Communication." with James Stone, James Stone Consulting!
Most designers may have heard something like, “learn to code like your life depends on it”. Some days it looks like everyone is searching for the mythical unicorn designer/developer. While individuals like this do exist that can cross disciplines, in general, this advice is misguided. Bad for you, bad for your team, and bad for your organization.
About the Speaker
James Stone (@JAMESSTONEco) is an award-winning web designer and a top contributor to ZURB Foundation. He has written for UX Pin and ZURB University and is an Adjunct Professor of Art at Penn State's School of Visual Art. He has presented at TEDxPSU, Harvard University Extension School, and the HTML5 Dev Conference.

Roll back
| description |
CHIFOO presents "Innovating from Within: Creating a Culture of Learning and Encouraging Getting it Wrong" with Ivana McConnell, Senior UI/UX Designer at Customer.io!
Why tech companies should focus on achieving inclusion first, attending to employees’ specific self-care needs in order to create a platform for diversity to flourish, and better software made. People are chaotic, and product design has to account for them— this is challenging, and often solved by doing research and testing.
About the Speaker

CHIFOO presents "Inclusion Before Diversity: Creating a Culture of Learning and Encouraging Getting it Wrong" with Ivana McConnell, Senior UI/UX Designer at Customer.io!
Why tech companies should focus on achieving inclusion first, attending to employees’ specific self-care needs in order to create a platform for diversity to flourish, and better software made. People are chaotic, and product design has to account for them— this is challenging, and often solved by doing research and testing.

CHIFOO presents "Caring Technologies Designing For Trust And Care" with Amelia Abreu, UX Night School!
Technology has the potential to shape the way that we give and receive care and the conditions in which the work of care is done. Yet, can we automate the crucial tasks of caring, and is it in our own interest to do so? How can we design services, along with products and systems, to support care?
About the Speaker
Amelia Abreu (@ameliaabreu) is a Portland-based design researcher, writer, and the founder of UX Night School. She's worked with teams at organizations like Nike, Intel, Mozilla and Microsoft, along with agencies, startups, and cultural institutions. She is a frequent conference speaker, the daughter of two schoolteachers, and generally geeky about how people learn (among other things). Her writing on culture and technology has been featured in the New Inquiry, Motherboard, The Hairpin and the BBC.

Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting
Roll back
| description |
We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations.
##PRESENTATIONS at 7pm (TBA)
After presentations we'll have more socializing time.
##**Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!**
ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.
ABOUT THE GROUP: *The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the mailing list. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!*

##PRESENTATIONS at 7pm
JWTs have Trust Issues
by Lance Ivy
If application security is built on healthy distrust, then JSON Web Tokens are pretty healthy little tokens. Come learn about JWTs: why do they exist, what issues do they solve, and how do they compare to Rails sessions? We'll build a threat model for user sessions, develop an appreciation for open standards, and discover how JWTs can be useful in any Rails application.
After presentations we'll have more socializing time.

Mistakes Were Made: Learning From Failure - Portland Street Epistemology
Roll back
| description |

Let's get together and discuss anything related to Street Epistemology (SE). The topic for November will be "Mistakes Were Made - Learning From Failure". As Dr. Peter Boghossian said, failure is an expected part of the process of learning to use Street Epistemology effectively.
We'll be looking at our mistakes in a positive light, as a beneficial tool for optimizing our technique and improving in the future. Bring your stories (or audio/video) of errors both big and small and share what you think you might have done better so we can all learn from each other. Afterwords we'll head to Deschutes Brewery.
This is a fun and casual social get-together for people who are interested in Street Epistemology. Why SE? Because beliefs that are not based on sound reasoning and evidence, including those in religion, pseudoscience, politics, and more, can occur at an alarming rate in our friends, family, community, and ourselves. While debate and presenting evidence can be effective when one is open to it, in other cases it can backfire, strengthening the belief even more (Nyhan & Reifler, Political Behavior, 2010: 32,[masked]).
Street Epistemology is an approach for having meaningful, respectful, and productive conversations that help people re-examine the processes they use to come to knowledge, become more reflective about their beliefs, and break through dogmatism.
See https://streetepistemology.com/
We're mostly skeptics and atheists, but all are welcome and encouraged to join us. |

"Data Visualization Techniques to Discover Optimization Opportunities"
Every day, we create over 2.5 quintillion bytes of data, and we'll create more tomorrow than we did today. As digital marketers, we swim through this sea of information and opportunity. But where to? And how can we read these currents?
At this month's Camp Optimization, Justin Wade, eRoi's performance analyst, will share powerful—and practical—data visualization techniques to help you discover opportunities, interpret hidden patterns, and tell better stories through data.
Come to hear Justin's insights and share a free beer or glass of wine with Portland's top digital marketing, design and optimization professionals. We're at Revolution Hall, second floor of the Washington High School in Southeast Portland.
What is Camp Optimization?
Camp Optimization's mission is simple: provide a casual, fun and informative forum for digital marketers and technologists to share optimization best practices, challenges and wins.
Who is roboboogie?
Roboboogie is a Portland-based digital experience optimization agency partnering closely with brands to improve conversion rates, nurture brand advocacy and increase customer value. |

The Rapid Learning Cycles Framework: A Repeatable Adaptation of Agile Development for Tangible Products
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Katherine Radeka walks us through how the Rapid Learning Cycles framework has emerged as a repeatable method for adopting Agile Development practices for tangible products. It overcomes many of the challenges that companies have had when they have tried to adopt Agile Development, by addressing the mismatches between the software / IT development environment and the challenges faced by scientists and engineers when the product involves physics, chemistry and/or biology.
The Rapid Learning Cycles framework is a synthesis of Agile Development and Lean Product Development practices that works within a company's existing phase gate PDP. It is concrete and actionable for program managers, technical leads and their sponsors so that they can use the framework with confidence after a small amount of training and coaching.
Teams that use the Rapid Learning Cycles framework exhibit the desired changes that people want from Agile Development: fast cycles of development, early engagement from customers and other stakeholders, the ability to respond to change in a dynamic environment, and adapt as new information develops.
They also build scientific knowledge to make better decisions instead of running through build-test-fix loops, capture knowledge real-time instead of reinventing solutions, and make better decisions up front instead of getting stuck with late-found defects and schedule delays.
Session Learning Objectives:
1) What the Rapid Learning Cycles framework is, and how it fits in with Agile Development.
2) What practices from Agile Development get used in the Rapid Learning Cycles framework.
3) What makes the Rapid Learning Cycles framework spread within a product development organization, even one that is resistant to Agile, or seems to be a poor fit.
Bio:
Katherine Radeka has a rare combination of business acumen, scientific depth and ability to untangle the organizational knots to remove the barriers to change. Since 2005, Whittier Consulting Group, Inc. has helped some of the world's leading companies get their products to market faster. She currently supports more than 100 active implementations of the Rapid Learning Cycles framework through the Rapid Learning Cycles Institute (rapidlearningcycles.com)
Katherine is the author of two books. Her first book, The Mastery of Innovation: A Field Guide to Lean Product Development won the Shingo Research Award in 2014. This book contains 19 case studies of companies who have used lean product development to get their ideas to market faster.
Katherine's second book is The Shortest Distance Between You and Your New Product: How Innovators Use Rapid Learning Cycles to Get Their Best Ideas to Market Faster. This book summarizes Katherine's ground-breaking work to integrate Agile Development and Lean Product Development into the Rapid Learning Cycles Framework, a proven method for accelerating innovation.
Katherine has climbed seven of the tallest peaks in the Cascade Mountains and spent ten days alone on the Pacific Crest Trail until an encounter with a bear convinced her that she needed a change in strategic direction. |
