OWASP: Crypto 101 - Part 1
Roll back
| description |
The media keeps talking about this Cryptography thing. Information Security teams pressure internal operations and development, as well as, vendors to support encrypted data and transport. How can we responsibly implement cryptography in our projects?
In the first of a 2-part series, we will discuss major types of encryption, including symmetric, asymmetric and hashing. We will cover the simple principles behind symmetric encryption, then lightly touch modern asymmetric functions, without the math! We will also cover certificate usage.
After our talk, you will understand the difference between AES, RSA and SHA. You will also understand how the web uses encryption and certificates to keep our transactions secure.
Our second part of the series will build on these terms and principles to explore real-world use cases, how we use encryption every day and how to apply encryption in your solution.
SPEAKER: Brian Ventura
Brian is a SANS Instructor and works locally for the City of Portland as an Information Security Architect. Brian co-teaches a PCC course this fall, focused on preparing for the CISSP certification.

The second part of the series presented by Tim Morgan, will focus on, SSL/TLS's PKI, certificate validation, how basic crypto goes wrong (lacking integrity protection, padding oracle attacks, weak password hashes, etc), and explore what *safe* cryptographic libraries are out there and how to use them.

knw is a huge supporter of women in tech and entrepreneurship. If you're interested in helping us empower more women entrepreneurs and women in business stop by our event and let us know how you want to get involved. Please ask us about our Women's Entrepreneur Fund and empowerment project as well.
Our mission at knw is to host fun and interactive startup and tech networking parties for the local community. Our events are cool, casual and designed for young entrepreneurs, tech professionals, and start-ups who don't want to feel like they are networking. Hanging out and socializing with the right people is how networking naturally happens and we work hard to create an environment that feels like a hangout and not a business event.
Attendees are encouraged to come and show off their cool products and services in creative ways, we just ask that you don't come to our events just to push material on people. Figure out a cool way to present your stuff and most important of all, be comfortable hanging out and actually meeting people, trust us the business will come after building real friendships.
Register now and we'll see you there! |

[1] HOWL: 3D/4D mapping and visualization of Oregon’s wildlands
The HOWL (Highlighting Oregon's WildLands) project aims to create an interactive 3D/4D mapping and visualization tool for presenting spatio-temporal information relevant to the preservation of wilderness and wildlife protection in Oregon. HOWL will be available to conservation advocates (e.g., Oregon Wild) and the general public, to improve dissemination, understanding and interpretation of multiple publicly available data sources. Candidate data sets include boundaries of current and proposed wilderness areas, wild and scenic river areas, national forests and other public lands, wildfire events, wildlife migrations, deforestation history, and satellite imagery, to name a few.
HOWL is a web application being built using CesiumJS, a powerful open source 3D mapping and visualization library, which enables incorporating not only realistic terrain modeling, but also volumetric symbols to build interactive 3D thematic maps. In addition, HOWL will leverage the temporal visualization capabilities of CesiumJS to add the 4th dimension, thus enabling dynamic playback of related past and/or predicted events. Visualizations examples include wildfire history in old growth forest areas, wildlife migration records, and deforestation chronicles.
This presentation dives into details of building HOWL by leveraging open source front-end components (e.g., CesiumJS, jQuery, Bootstrap), back-end tools (e.g., MapShaper, toGeoJson, TopoJSON, node.js) and workflows for data acquisition, transformation, and integration. The presentation addresses key design decisions, technical challenges and future developments. |

Come join us again at Rogue Eastside for a discussion of Lyssa Adkins' great book, Coaching Agile Teams. We'll be looking at Part II of the book - and exploring the various stances a coach takes to the team , be it coach, facilitator, teacher, mentor. If you are familiar with the Agile Coaching Competency Framework from ACI, this book is the root of that. We look forward to having you at the discussion where we'll dig into the different stances a coach takes and over a pint we'll try out an exercise to learn more about the areas where we are collectively strong, and the areas we could stand to learn more about! |

Who: Brian P. Martin<br>
What: A Philosophy for Reliability: Lessons learned from 40 years of System Administration<br>
Where: PSU, 1930 SW 4th Ave. Room FAB 86-01 (Lower Level)<br>
When: Thursday, September 7th, 2017 at 7pm<br>
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom<br>
After spending 40 years being a System Administrator, frequent PLUG attendee Brian Martin will share what he's learned in his quest to be the best System Administrator he could be. While primarily targeted at system administration, many of his points are equally applicable to programmers, web developers, and anyone working in IT.
About Brian
Brian first laid hands on a computer in 1970. He earned his first money in IT ($5) in high school, and continued contract programming through college. After working for many years as a system programmer in government and private industry he began his own consulting company in 1994. He relocated to Portland in 1996 in the successful pursuit of love, and has been here ever since. He lives with his wife and and a pair of dogs on the west side. He enjoys eating out with friends, live performances of jazz, comedy, and Shakespeare, games of all kinds, and hopes to return to hiking and photography in retirement.
Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting.

We've scheduled our next meetup after taking a break over the summer. The details are coming, but this is promising to be an interesting and informative discussion on a marketing automation program from both the brand and agency perspectives.
Steve Gehlen from S.R. Smith in Newberg will be presenting with a colleague from Bonfire Marketing.
More details coming... but expect our standard event agenda:
5:30 - 6:00 - Sign in and networking
6:00 - 6:15 - Introductions and announcements
6:15 - 7:00 - The main event, presentation and discussion
7:00 - 7:30 - Additional discussions and networking
Thanks again to Portland's own Act-On Software for providing the venue and sponsoring the event! |

In this meetup we will focus on how clients and agencies can best collaborate to get the most out of a marketing automation platform and maximize results in a consumer digital marketing campaign.
Steve Gehlen, S.R.Smith’s Digital Marketing Director, and Priscilla Converse, Account Manager at Bonfire Marketing, will share their experience in co-managing S.R.Smith's seasonal digital campaign and the impact of going from two separate marketing technology platforms to a single marketing automation platform.
What you'll learn:
(1) How brands and agencies can collaborate to maximize campaign results and ROI using marketing automation.
(2) Setting up marketing automation to support a digital campaign and collaboration.
(3) How using a single marketing automation platform improved the campaign results from the previous season using a separate Email Service Provider and Landing Page Platform.
About the presenting companies:
S.R.Smith is the global-leading swimming pool deck equipment manufacturer based in Canby, Oregon.
Bonfire Marketing is a Portland based digital marketing agency focused on helping brands bring the right message to the right target market ad the right time (and on the right channel!).
The agenda:
5:30 - 6:00 - Sign in and networking
6:00 - 6:15 - Introductions and announcements
6:15 - 7:00 - The main event, presentation and discussion
7:00 - 7:30 - Additional discussions and networking
Thanks again to Portland's own Act-On Software for providing the venue and sponsoring the event! |
