What better way to start the new school year than with one of the founding members of the NW Education Cluster: Learning.com.
In addition to our usual networking and mingling, Learning.com's CEO, Keith Oelrich, will be our spotlight guest for another "fireside chat". It's a unique opportunity to hear from a pioneer in the K-12 online education market who's been a part of its evolution over the last 17 years.
Bring your business cards (or post-its and a pen) and be ready to meet and reacquaint yourself with peers working at the intersection of education and technology. See you there!

TECHFLUENCE
Roll back
| description |

Join us for a special evening with Daniel Wilson, author of the New York Times bestselling Robopocalypse and its sequel Robogenesis, as well as seven other books.
Daniel, who earned a PhD in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University, as well as Masters degrees in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics will be reading from his most recent novel, The Clockwork Dynasty.
After the reading, Daniel will be joined by Todd Greco, Ziba’s Director of Interactive Design, in a conversation exploring where science, technology and design overlap, and the future of machines. We look forward to audience engagement in this conversation. Daniel will be available for a book signing following the speaking program.
The Clockwork Dynasty imagines a history in which humanlike court automatons secretly served the great empires of antiquity. Centuries later, the same machines are running out of power. As the modern-day survivors cannibalize each other for energy, a human scientist will risk her life to find the origin of the machine race, and the key to saving it.
Doors at 5:30pm, show starts promptly at 6pm. Pizza & drinks to follow. |

I (Epicodus's founder, Michael) am going to give a talk at Epicodus's Portland office on Tuesday, September 19, from 6-7pm called "Your Jobs Are Safe: Rebutting the Jobless Future Freakout". I've heard and read a lot of concern in the tech industry and more broadly that technology and automation threaten to leave our world with very few jobs and massive inequality. I'll explore the history of massive technology shifts and their impacts on jobs, the current situation of automation and people-replacement, and what the future might hold. I hope you can make it! |

Cinema of Horrors Haunted House
Roll back
| description |

→ |
The Cinema of Horrors is a unique Halloween event featuring two haunted houses at the old Three Rivers Mall theater in Kelso, WA. Featuring the “FarmHouse”, our most terrifying attraction is a non-stop adrenaline rush inside of Ma's disgusting, dusty, demented 'ol house where the family always enjoys tormenting their visitors. Our second attraction, “Dark Legends of New Orleans”, is an adrenaline rush in which you'll take a trip to New Orleans and come face to face with some of history's most dark and terrifying legends. Besides our two, top notch haunted attractions we’re featuring a CLOWN scare zone, delicious fair foods for hungry fear seekers, a pumpkin carving booth, photo ops, haunt merch, trick-or-treat nights and more!
The Cinema of Horrors is an all ages, family friendly event. However, we recommend it for audiences 13 years or older. For younger audiences we offer fun, non-scary, trick-or-treat nights. Visit our website for more information.
The Cinema of Horrors is presented by Treadway Events & Entertainment and KUKN, KLOG & The Wave Radio Stations.

Portland's Techno-Activism 3rd Mondays - Privacy, Risk, and Response
Roll back
| description |

What exactly is privacy? Do we have a right to privacy, and if so, what can we do to exercise it? Do we even need to worry about privacy, and how much should we be concerned?
Join us this month for a discussion of these topics and more with Russell Mickler, a local technology consultant. He’ll describe the current legal state of electronic privacy in America and describe the legal, technical, and behavioral responses that we can take as individuals to protect the confidentiality of our private information.
This presentation includes a privacy self-assessment and scoring tool to help you tailor your response to privacy and will set up the conversation on privacy strategies and safeguards to extend into future TA3M sessions.
During this discussion, we’ll talk about:
- the definition of privacy
- our response to privacy
- risk assessment and response
Program:
6:00 pm - Doors
6:15 pm - Presentation / discussion
7:15 pm - Q & A / networking
