create Calagator::Event 1250472501 Portland SaaS Founders - Developing high functioning software teams for SaaS Roll back

description nil
We're all faced with the challenge of creating an awesome software product for our customers. A big part of this is having a highly functional software development team.

In this Meetup we'll discuss:

• When to develop software in-house versus outsourcing or partnering with another software platform. Some SaaS companies utilize a mix of in-house and outsourced developers. We'll brainstorm various possible approaches.

• How do you train new developers? What approaches have been successful and what has been a dismal failure? - Does it make sense to hire senior developers only or a mix of junior and senior developers?

• Team / project organization - Do you do daily standups? How do your organize sprints? How are deadlines established and by whom? Is your team in the same office or are some remote? What tools do you use (Slack, Trello, etc.)? With all of the bugs, feature requests, UI overhauls, when do you ship updates to the product?

• Communication and transparency - How do you speak to the rest of the team in a language everyone understands? Do you hold weekly/bi-weekly meetings to announce progress? How do you showcase new features to clients?

Coffee, tea and draft beer will be provided. Come hang out with other SaaS founders and share your story!

If there's more on this topic you would like to discuss, send us a message and we'll try and get it added to the agenda.

description nil Chris Hansen will be presenting an early version of a talk "[It’s Good to Have (JVM) Options](https://oracle.rainfocus.com/catalog/oracle/oow17/catalogjavaone17?search=CON3329&showEnrolled=false)" he will be delivering at the JavaOne technology conference in October. Chris has organized technology events for youth in Portland and is a product manager for New Relic's Java agent. Abstract: The Oracle HotSpot JVM has hundreds of command-line options for tuning performance for your particular application and workload. Which ones are the most useful and the most commonly used, and which are misused? New Relic monitors more than half a million JVMs. In addition to providing runtime performance data, the New Relic Java Agent reports JVM command-line options. By looking at anonymous JVM configuration data, we can draw out interesting patterns and trends. This presentation walks through some of the most commonly used JVM options and some cases in which certain combinations may have unintended consequences. You’ll come away with a better idea of when to use an option and when JVM defaults may be the best choice.

update Calagator::Event 1250472270 PDXWIT Quarterly N/NE Lean Coffee Gathering Roll back

description Women and other underrepresented groups in tech, particularly those who call North and Northeast Portland home, are invited to a special Lean Coffee networking event. This is a great opportunity to cross boundaries and broaden networks in a safe space. IntraEdge Technology Service & Solutions is happy to host us at Compass Coffee Roasting. If you’d like to start your Sunday off with a casual networking event, join us! The event is geared towards those who “find ourselves at the edges of the bell curve of demographics in tech fields,” as Brittany Newhouse so eloquently put it. Don’t be intimidated by the Lean Coffee format; it’s not just for Agile practitioners. It’s simply an informal way to meet and discuss what interests and affects us. The meetup will run from 8:30-10 a.m. Be there early to make your order before we start; coffee and snacks will be provided. This event is sponsored by PDXWIT, AgilePDX and Portland Lean Coffee. Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events. update Calagator::Event 1250472491 PDXWIT Immerse Yourself in Virtual Reality Roll back

description Are you looking for an event to get better acquainted with Virtual Reality? In partnership with Joshua Alan Young from the Portland VR Meetup, co-organizers Judy Fischbach and Marguerite Gallagher invite you to come learn what Virtual Reality offers and to understand why there is so much trending interest. An emerging technology that is expected to impact many fields, including entertainment, journalism, education, and health care, VR/AR has been identified by the Technology Association of Oregon as one of top areas of technology growth in our state. The community in Portland is gaining momentum. It's an exciting time for many of us to jump in as the technology is so new. The playing field is more level and there is much interest beyond non-technology in areas such as the arts and education. The integrative nature of creating applications in VR can be unique and fun! Don’t know where to begin? We will have an overview, hands-on opportunities to experience the technology, and information on tools and resources. Our panel will include speakers from the community on VR education and on companies/projects with promising VR related work which demonstrates the variety of exciting applications. Bring your questions! We promise this will be a fun and memorable evening as we explore ways to grow community together in this fascinating new area of technology!

Agenda:
5:30 - 6:30 : Networking / Trials-Demos / Vendors
6:30 - 6:45 : Welcome and Overview
6:45 - 7:45 : Guest Speakers
7:45 - 8:15 : Networking

Event FAQ
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: Public parking and street parking is available (though we cannot validate parking).
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: There is an open bike room, but please bring locks as it is in a common space.
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: We always recommend public transportation as a way to cut down on Co2, and there is plenty of public transportation nearby.

Purpose: PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization.
