create Calagator::Event 1250472571 Out of the Box Network Developer Meet Up - Reality of SDN, Openstack EPA and Containers Roll back

description nil In this meet up we will talk about the different Buzz words in NFV and SDN space. What is SDN and the role it plays in networking. How do Containers fit into the whole space, and why is everyone so interested in containers? Lastly we will talk about how knowing about hardware and how to utilize the hardware functionality helps accelerate the functionality of VNFs in the OpenStack environment. First talk begins at 5:30PM. Talk 1: What is SDN really? Software Defined Networking (SDN) is the hot topic in networking. There are many projects and products all claiming to be SDN, so what is it really? Why does SDN matter? and what is happening in the resurgent networking space? About the speaker: Stephen Hemminger is a Linux developer who specializes in networking. He has worked for Linux Foundation, Brocade (Vyatta) and now Microsoft. As maintainer of the Linux bridging and the iproute2 utilities, he contributes regularly to the Linux kernel and DPDK projects. Having been involved with TCP/IP since the early days of UNIX, he is quite familiar with the congestion and SMP issues. Steve works on so integrating so many different networking pieces that he decided to give himself the title of Network Plumber. Talk 2: Container networking First virtual machines and now containers? What are containers, anyway? We’ll discuss what a container is, how it’s different from a virtual machine and then explore configuration options for networking in a container world. We’ll also go over some basic ways of putting containers together into applications and how to make Linux namespaces work for you. About the speaker: Kevin Bohan is a software architect in the Network Platforms Group at Intel. He spends most of his time working on performance optimization of network virtualization technologies being utilized in the telecommunications industry. Prior to Intel, he worked in academia in the areas of advanced networking, supercomputing and embedded systems. Talk 3: Server Networking for the Curious Confused about the differences in server-based networking technologies? Maybe you’ve heard or read about DPDK, or FD.io VPP, or other technologies, but the bigger picture is hard to see. We’ll walk through a short survey of some of the most important and useful packet-processing tools, both in hardware and in open source, and why you might be interested in them. About the speaker: Jim Chamings is a Sr. Software Engineer at Intel, working in the Datacenter Scale Engineering team. His focus is on enabling Cloud and SDN/NFV developers to get the maximum value out of their datacenters

create Calagator::Event 1250472569 UX Using Blockchain Roll back

description nil Doors open at 5:30pm, talk starts at 6:00pm. Blockchain technology surfaced with Bitcoin and was first conceptualized by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2008. Bitcoin’s underlying technology is blockchain, one does not exist without the other. However, many individuals soon realized the true power and seemingly unlimited potential of blockchain technology. Over the last 8.5 years, we have seen innovation paving the way for what many deem the second generation of the internet. To many this is still the early days of blockchain technology, even though it has been 8, going on 9 years since introduction. Our understanding of a blockchain, possible applications, and the world of possibilities associated is rapidly evolving and changing. This talk will discuss the basics of blockchain and touch on the concept of public, private, and hybrid blockchain; specifically, Dragonchain.
Our Presenter, Eileen Quenin
Eileen Quenin is a UX Strategist and tech evangelist for Dragonchain, an open source platform. It’s is best described as a distributed crypto ledger framework protocol that makes it easy to create cost-efficient business networks where virtually anything of value can be tracked and traded. Eileen is active in the Seattle start up ecosystem. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design and a Master of Science degree in Engineering with a focus on Human Computer Interaction. Prior to joining working on Dragonchain, she spent 3 years in Amazon Global Payments guiding product development for gift cards, AmazonPay and Amazon PayPhrase. She holds a patent on techniques for intelligent selection of a currency preference conversion. Prior to that, Eileen worked at LexisNexis on fraud prevention, background checks, public records, and identity management solutions was instrumental in bringing to market visualization and drawing tools designed for creating link analysis charts—visual relationships between individuals, addresses, vehicles, corporations, and other items.

update Calagator::Event 1250471210 PdxDevOps Roll back

description Join us for the October meeting of PdxDevOps. Agenda: Speakers: TBH pdxdevops is a Portland, Oregon user group that explores the glorious intersection of software development and systems operations, and shares practical advice on working effectively in an era of agile infrastructure, server automation and cloud computing. The group welcomes participants interested in any related products, technologies and methodologies. The group has been meeting regularly since August 2010 for presentations, demos and discussions applicable to all skill levels, from newbies and experts. Every month 15-35 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for devops – join us! Join us for our monthly gathering to discuss everything from incident response to cross-team collaboration to automation frameworks. Food provided. Please RSVP! Please note the new location! THIS MONTH: Lasso by Benjamin Foote Lasso is an SSO solution for nginx using the auth_request module. An nginx reverse proxy can be configured to require OAuth login for any website or web application. Most OAuth providers are supported including Google and Github. Lasso replaces that "one crappy password" that is found at many orgs. The response time for Lasso validation is less than 1ms when run on the same host. Lasso is offered under the MIT license. Support is available on the #lasso freenode irc channel. Ben would be more than happy to help you install Lasso. Benjamin Foote http://bnf.net is a Systems Engineer and Linux nerd with 20 years experience. By day (and sometimes night) Ben helps Meedan https://meedan.com to build great tools for journalists including the fact checking tool Check and the social media language translation tool Bridge. Ben proudly serves as the current Board President of Umbrella http://umbrellapdx.org which acts as fiscal sponsor to projects such as Shift, Better Block PDX, Disaster Relief Trials, Futel and the PDX World Naked Bike Ride. Other life accomplishments and past antics include hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, hiking most of the Continental Divide Trail, curating On Gallery devoted to interactive art and technology based arts, founding an Ultimate Frisbee league for beginners, training lifeguards and teaching preschool (by far the most difficult job Ben has ever had). Benjamin Foote Systems Engineer bnfinet on github @bnf Devops with Public Clouds by Andy Chan Cloud and DevOps could mean different things to different people. This talk is centered on best practices selecting cloud compute friendly workloads -- bursting to the cloud to meet peak demands while keeping source data local. What DevOps folks are leveraging the cloud currently and the trends going forward I am currently an alliance systems engineer at Avere System providing public clouds with High-Performance Computing solutions. Prior to Avere, I was with Mentor Graphics supporting some of the heaviest software engineering R&D workloads in the electronic design automation space (8,000 to 20,000 cores) I received my BA from Oregon State and my MBA from Marylhurst. pdxdevops is a Portland, Oregon user group that explores the glorious intersection of software development and systems operations, and shares practical advice on working effectively in an era of agile infrastructure, server automation and cloud computing. description nil *Seating is limited, please plan to arrive early to ensure a seat!* We are hosting an event to further the cause of inclusivity, focused on gender. By attending, you’ll earn talking points about why gender-inclusive software matters to your business, to our society, and to everyone. You will leave with an idea of how to achieve it in your own software with a practical and freely available method called GenderMag. We will also discuss ideas about how you can help make software more inclusive to diversity of thought. This event is suitable for anyone who helps shape software (software managers, software developers, UXers, tech CEOs, tech CIOs, ...) About the speaker: Margaret Burnett is an OSU Distinguished Professor at Oregon State University. She began her career in industry, where she was the first woman software developer ever hired at Procter & Gamble Ivorydale. A few degrees and shattered glass ceilings later, she joined academia, with a research focus on people who are engaged in some form of software development. Burnett is an ACM Distinguished Scientist, a member of the ACM CHI Academy, and an award-winning mentor. She is also on the Academic Alliance Advisory Board of the National Center for Women In Technology (NCWIT). Recent podcast interview with Burnett: http://www.changingacademiclife.com/blog/2017/7/5/margaret-burnett This is a method for de-marginalizing one aspect of tech.
